Power conference officials and attorneys are meeting today to further explore a proposal to address U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken’s concerns over House settlement roster limits, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes “work has begun on a legal response to grandfather-in those on rosters. They have 12 days to file. (link)
|
Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, with more headlines, describes it as “telling” that the SEC and Big Ten “haven’t rammed through the multi-AQ 4-4-2-2-1-1 [College Football Playoff] format. … It may be a sign. Is compromise afoot? Do the two conferences fear public backlash in adopting such a lopsided playoff model? Do the two leagues want to prevent further disadvantaging the Big 12 and ACC?” During this week’s meetings, Dellenger notes CFP Executive Director Rich Clark “introduced a new playoff format geared toward striking a compromise between the Big Ten’s multi-AQ model and the existing 12-team format that features seven at-large spots. Within the format, conferences would be ranked by the selection committee using a data-driven system, such as their non-conference winning percentage, previous playoff success, etc. The highest-ranked conference would receive four AQs, the second would get three, the third gets two AQs and so on, with one spot reserved for the best Group of Six program and as many as three at-large spots available in a 14-team model. The format is expected to receive little to no serious traction. But, at least, it’s something.” As one commissioner puts it: “No one else has brought anything to the table.” Dellenger goes on to observe that it’s “clear that there is an effort to compromise on format. The goal: Arrive at a straight seeding model in 2025 and a new, more balanced format starting in 2026.” (link)

The NCAA is partnering with Genius Sports to sell live data from all NCAA championships to Genius through 2032, per Sportico's Eben Novy-Williams, who adds: “Genius is not paying an additional fee for the sportsbook rights, according to someone familiar with the details. The two sides will continue under the revenue share laid out in their original 2018 agreement, said the person, who was granted anonymity because the details are private.” Deal details: “Under this expanded agreement, Genius will establish an Authorized Gaming License (AGL), under which sportsbooks can access official NCAA feeds and logos. The operators in that program will also agree to limit ‘risky bet types,’ the announcement says, though it is not specific on what it considers risky. […] Under the new Genius deal, the NCAA’s LiveStats platform will remain free for member schools, and the company will use its AI platform, GeniusIQ, to enhance the feed’s real-time analytics, coaching insights and fan-facing uses. It also includes integrity services that monitor betting patterns for potential fraud.” (link)
|
NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley: "The NCAA has and will continue to be a national leader in advancing responsible gaming policies, and this extended partnership with Genius Sports continues that commitment with a first-of-its-kind ban on high-risk proposition bets, specifically underperformance wagers, negative outcome bets and wagers on injuries, officials' decisions or fan-voted awards. NCAA data will only be available to sportsbooks if they remove risky bets from their platforms and agree to fully cooperate with NCAA investigations and provide key information, including geolocation data and device records. The NCAA retains the right to terminate any sportsbook data license if integrity protections are violated -- ensuring real accountability." The NCAA will use revenue from the agreement to fund educational programs on sports betting harm and to monitor and mitigate the harassment of student-athletes, coaches and officials, according to ESPN’s David Purdum, who also notes the deal does not include College Football Playoff data. (link)

William & Mary will join the Patriot League as an associate member in football starting with the 2026 season. Tribe AD Brian Mann: "Moving football to the Patriot League is a strategic decision that will align our program with other schools that play competitive football in a strong FCS conference with student-athletes who achieve at the highest level. Joining a conference with Richmond, with whom we have a football rivalry encompassing 135 games, is another tremendous benefit. We can look forward to closing each football season with Richmond in the battle for the Capital Cup in front of cheering alumni, friends, and fans." (link)

Clemson AD Graham Neff confirms the baseball program is going to 34 fully-funded scholarships and noted after a board of trustees meeting that the Tigers expect to split rev-share dollars by what each sport generates. The Post & Courier’s Jon Blau: “So not 75 football, 15 MBB, 5 WBB, 5 the rest. Will be a higher number for Clemson football, which generates 80-plus percent.” Blau also reports that IPTAY CEO Davis Babb addressed IPTAY’s pointing donors toward Clemson's NIL collectives: "The idea is we want to keep people out of the headlines. No (transfer) portal news. No drama... We're not going to lead with NIL but it's going to be a part of it." (link); Meanwhile, The State’s Chapel Fowler reports Clemson has approved a new six-year, $27.5M contract extension for Men’s Basketball HC Brad Brownell. The deal goes through 2031 and raises Brownell's total salary to $4M in 2025-26 and $5M by 2029-30. (link)
|
ESPN’s Dan Murphy talks with several stakeholders to get an on-the-ground look at the transfer portal, including how A&P Agency Co-Founder Jacob Piasecki and GM Jason Bloom generated a reported $1.25M in revenue last year. Piasecki, who was studying physics at Texas A&M before co-founding A&P, tells Murphy: "Physics teaches you to take really complicated problems and break them down into smaller pieces to solve one at a time. And that's pretty much what we're doing here. It's just piecing together a ton of small problems." Murphy goes on to note that A&P “takes an 8% cut on most of the deals for Power 4 conference players it represents. That number can go as high as 15%, especially for young players or FCS-level players who won't generate as much attention in the portal on their own. On the other side of the transaction, Virginia Director of Recruiting/Professional Football Liaison Justin Speros explains that when he needs one or two players, he knows he'll need roughly 10 "hooks in the water" to make it work. "We prefer not to be transactional, but it just is what it is. There are things we need to do to keep pressing forward. And what that means is a lot of either just getting to a number or not getting to the number and moving on.” Lots more from Murphy. (link)

The Trump administration has restored the visa registrations of thousands of international students who had minor and/or dismissed legal infractions. The Department of Justice says Immigration and Customs Enforcement is working on a new policy regarding foreign students studying in the United States on F-1 visas. Until that policy is issued, no students will have their online student-visa records, known as SEVIS records, terminated “solely based on” criminal history checks that had flagged misdemeanor charges and dismissed cases. Politico’s Kyle Cheney and Josh Gerstein note the reversal comes after “weeks of intense scrutiny by courts and dozens of restraining orders issued by judges who deemed the mass termination of students from a federal database — used by universities and the federal government to track foreign students in the U.S. — as flagrantly illegal.” (link)

Rutgers football student-athlete Jett Elad was granted a preliminary injunction in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey on Friday as part of his lawsuit against the NCAA. The decision provides Elad with an extra year of eligibility for the upcoming 2025-26 season per Boise State law professor Sam Ehrlich. (link)

Montana men’s basketball student-athlete Kai Johnson is the latest to file an eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA. Johnson, whose waiver was rejected by the NCAA, argues he should receive an extra year of eligibility due to the year he spent in DII. He also argues he should earn at least $100K in NIL if he’s granted an extra year. (link)

The NCAA has found that sports betting violations occurred at Iowa State when five former staff members placed impermissible online bets on professional and collegiate games, including Iowa State men’s and women’s basketball contests. The former staff members are Chase Clark, former assistant director of football equipment operations; Michael Dryer, former assistant equipment manager; Jace Heacock, former graduate assistant football coach; Kyle Highland, former football recruiting operations assistant; and Mason Williams, former associate for athletics equipment operations. Each agreed to the following penalties: a one-year show-cause order in which any employing institution must require the involved individual to attend the annual NCAA Regional Rules Seminar at his own expense; and a two-week suspension during the first year of employment within the show-cause period, in which the involved individual cannot participate in any athletics activities, which includes being present or communicating with equipment or athletics staff members or student-athletes. Arkansas State’s AD search will be led by Chancellor Dr. Todd Shields and ASU System President Dr. Brendan Kelly, who have said that while they will move as quickly as possible, there is no timeline to complete the search. Interesting nuggets from Kentucky’s official release on the athletic department’s transition to Champions Blue LLC. Cats President Eli Capilouto: “We believe this is an innovative approach — a new structure and governance model that thoughtfully contemplates how we strengthen Athletics, protect and promote the University and open up new opportunities for growth.” Leadership structure: “The Champions Blue Board, a public entity, will meet regularly to advise President Capilouto and UK Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart on strategic directions and opportunities for revenue growth. Opportunities could include developments such as expanded premium seating and fan amenities in Kroger Field or public-private partnerships to develop revenue-generating ventures.” The full UK Board of Trustees will formalize the move with a vote today. Athletics Admin consultant KC Smurthwaite believes the “next round of conference realignment centers on Sacramento State or the WAC.” Smurthwaite points out that while the Hornets have announced they will become independent, “buried in the Big Sky Conference constitution is a clause stating that all members must be football-playing members. There was a loophole for Idaho when they were left without an FBS home for a few years, but as it stands now, I haven’t heard anything indicating the Big Sky is backing down from that requirement. The DMs are open. It’s been floated on social media — and I can confirm — that the exit fee to leave the Big Sky recently increased to $1M. At least one school voted against it, and I’ll let you guess who.” Smurthwaite goes on to point out that “now that the WAC is back on shaky ground, there are whispers that the Green and Gold could land in the Big West, Summit, WCC — or possibly work something out to remain in the Big Sky. … If it’s the WAC, it could calm the waters a bit — emphasis on could — but Tarleton State hasn’t been shy about its FBS aspirations. There’s also underlying tension among the Texas schools in both the Southland and WAC. Some feel not everyone is equally invested — which, of course, is what caused the WAC to start poaching Southland schools in the first place a few years ago. I’ve heard from multiple folks that everything is on the table for the WAC — even rebranding it as an all-Texas league. The Lone Star State WAC schools are driving that bus.” Smurthwaite adds that he believes the Big Sky is unlikely to expand, but if it does, “whatever school they invite will accept — but it won’t be loud. It’ll be a quiet, deliberate move.” More. (link)

Despite numerous facility projects during his tenure, including the coming $90M Nayden Center For Academic Excellence at Bailey Student-Athlete Success Center, Connecticut AD David Benedict says the Huskies won’t slow down: “Every single student-athlete now will share in a similar experience. When I got here, just football and men's and women's basketball were. No one really complained because most of the student-athletes had a bad experience from a facilities standpoint. The majority of the 600 student-athletes were all in bad facilities, so no one was complaining. Once you start building nice facilities for portions of that group, everyone starts raising their hand saying, ‘When are you going to fix ours?' [...] We've made a huge leap forward with our facilities. It took a lot of time and a lot of people. I think when we get [Bailey] done, and a handful of other [ongoing] projects, in my mind — I'm not talking about size and scale — but if you compare our facility plan we would definitely be in the top 50 in the country, doesn't matter what conference.” (link)

North Alabama AD Josh Looney joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to dive into the concept of “investing in relationships” and the practical applications of relationship-building for departmental success. Looney and Brown also discuss Looney’s arrival during the final year of the Lions’ transition to Division I, with Looney explaining his message to the department when he arrived: “Do not slow down for me. I am catching up to you. You guys have had a great three years of transition. We’re going to implement some things and culture pieces that we want, but it is my job to catch up to you. You keep going and sprinting. … And then you start investing in those relationships and you start understanding who in that department is ready for more leadership, who are key to success.” Looney goes on to explain his three cultural pillars: in addition to operating with a “no jerks” mindset when hiring and developing a staff, Looney’s pillars include measuring and celebrating wins in the classroom, in the field of competition and in the community and operating as the “enemy of the status quo.” Full Q&A. More from Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney with The Athletic’s Seth Emerson. Swinney cautions against professionalizing college football to the point that it’s an NFL minor league. “Football is not a game of longevity. 98% percent of these kids aren’t playing pro football, so we need to really help them maximize their opportunity here. But we need to equip them for life. If you’re playing football at 27, you’re an old man. And I just feel like and worry that the game is going to use a lot of these kids right now, because the adults have kind of left the room. The adults are all downstairs sipping wine, and we’ve put a bunch of kids up in the room with fireworks and gas and knives and we don’t think anything bad is going to happen. And I just think we can be better. And I think eventually we will be better. And I think we’re really close to that.” (link)

Michigan announces the season ticket and Preferred Seat Contribution (PSC) pricing for the 2025-26 men's basketball season. U-M is modernizing its pricing tiers for the first time since Crisler Center's renovation in 2012, with the average combined season ticket and PSC price increasing by 9.6%. Michigan will move from 11 pricing tiers to 19 to “better align with the secondary market. After extensive analysis of secondary market pricing, it was determined that Michigan's season ticket and PSC pricing were undervalued. Last year alone, the average resale of season tickets on the secondary market was 85 percent higher than face value.” In the release, the Wolverines specifically cite the $20.5M House payments and a $5.9M uptick in new scholarships as factors. In 2022, ESPN aired one College GameDay for Women’s College Basketball, in 2023 there were three, in 2024 five and there would have been five this past season as well if not for one of the games getting cancelled due to snow. Co-host Elle Duncan: “We’re hoping for even more, right? The hope is that we’re just going to do more of them. I definitely think that there is a desire. The sponsorship is there. So, it’s really just about logistics. But that’s always been our hope, to just try to do more, but scale in a way that makes sense.” Co-host Andraya Carter adds: “More shows, bigger crowds, more things.” And Co-host Chiney Ogwumike agrees: “There’s a camaraderie within women’s basketball where we’re all uplifting each other that I feel is very special and very unique. So, the goal is to have more GameDays.” More on the history of the show and potential opportunities for its future. (link)
