Learfield is set to announce a reorganization of its leadership team, according to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who reports the “company is slated to add Arkansas State AD Jeff Purinton and Paciolan President Deana Barnes as EVPs. The pair will be part of a new four-person EVP team that also includes Learfield staffers Andrew Wheeler and Meghan Heinchon (Wheeler is currently an EVP on the sports properties side, while Heinchon is being promoted from SVP to EVP). That quartet will oversee multimedia rights teams of senior leaders, GM and local personnel and report directly to Sports Properties President Kim Damron. Ben Mathan, Learfield’s Chief Strategy Officer, will oversee Paciolan on an interim basis in the wake of Barnes’ move.” Damron tells Portnoy: “What we found [over the last year-and-a-half] was we were engaging with our clients way more often than we were in the past, when things were status quo. We looked at it and said, ‘What do we need to do?’ And it was to get senior leaders in the organization to work closely with the ADs.” Purinton, Portnoy adds, will “oversee Learfield’s SEC business. Barnes will handle the Big Ten and Pac-12, while Wheeler will be over the company’s Big 12 and ACC partners. Heinchon, a former GM for properties at East Carolina and Vanderbilt, will serve as point person for Learfield’s Group of Five clients.” (link)

Kentucky is moving toward housing its athletics department under a new university corporate entity that school officials say will improve their flexibility to handle rising financial pressure from the House settlement, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, who reports the new entity – Champions Blue LLC – is being modeled on structures under which its hospitals and other medical services enterprises are housed. Berkowitz notes that UK had nearly $202M in operating revenue and nearly $197M in operating expenses during FY24, which puts the Wildcats among the top 15 public schools in both categories. UK AD Mitch Barnhart expects that expense figure to increase by around $50M by FY26 due to the House settlement ($20-23M), more scholarships ($3-4M), inflation and other spending. Barnhart also notes the new entity would enable the athletics department to undertake a variety of business development opportunities and to offer pay and benefit programs to employees – and potentially to student-athletes – that it cannot under the current setup. Barnhart: “You've heard other departments talk about business districts and things like that. And those are conversations that are all on the table but really difficult to perform in our current structure. And so this gives us more flexibility to do that. … We’ve got some ideas on some things that we're going to have to run the traps on, so to speak, to say, ‘Hey, does this work? Does it make sense? Can it produce the things we think are necessary for us to move forward? … In the old way of life, there were literally four to five buckets that you got all of your revenue from. We're going to have those four to five buckets become eight to 10 buckets, and we're going to have to figure out other ways to do our work.” (link)

Colorado State is revamping the Ram Club as part of CSU’s comprehensive Path to the Pac strategy for entering the Pac-12 in July of 2026. CSU will take a “three-pronged approach” in funding, creating the Ram Athletic Fund and McGraw Society in addition to the current sport-specific excellence funds. Rams AD John Weber: "We have nearly 400 student-athletes competing at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics. We will work tirelessly to provide them with every opportunity to maximize their potential. We need Ram Country's support for the Ram Club through the Ram Athletic Fund, sport-specific excellence funds and the McGraw Society. It is a direct way for all those who love the Rams to get involved. Colorado State is a world-class academic and research institution located in the greatest city in the country. Our mission is clear: to relentlessly pursue competitive and personal success, to courageously champion our university and to passionately connect with our community." (link)

Denver has received a “transformational” gift from the Watson family to support the swimming and diving program and launch DU’s efforts to establish a head coaching endowment for swimming and diving. Pioneers AD Josh Berlo: “The University is committed to seeing both programs continue to flourish, and we're confident that this head coaching endowment will get completed and play an important role in recruiting and retaining top-level talent, while providing our current and future Pioneers with a transformational student-athlete experience.” (link)

Asked whether a college football super league will and/or should happen, Clemson Football HC Dabo Swinney replies: “Both.” He adds: “It’s not sustainable the way we are. It’s just a matter of time. It’s one of those things even though for some of us it’s really clear to see, we’ve just gotta go through it to get there.” Swinney, according to The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, envisions the top 40-50 programs joining forces, even if Big Ten and SEC will have to cede power and revenue. “Eventually money’s going to win the day. I think other dynamics and factors will eventually come into play. I just think people are eventually going to see the business opportunity involved, and it’s going to come down to brands, and TV viewership, and all of that type of stuff. More so than a league (you’re in right now). Eventually that’s where it’ll get to. Who knows when we’ll get there. Probably sooner rather than later.” (link)

Ole Miss Women’s Basketball HC Yolett McPhee-McCuin doesn’t mince words and calls the current system pay-for-play. “There’s a small group that’s getting NIL. You’ve got people getting money that’ve got 200 followers. They don’t have name, image and likeness. If you don’t invest that, if you don’t know how to make that into $2.5M, you’re going to be broke.” (link)

U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken has issued a response to the amended House settlement submitted after this month’s hearing, writing in part: “The Court finds a decision by Defendants and NCAA member schools to begin implementing the roster limits before the Court granted final approval of the settlement agreement is not a valid reason for approval of the agreement in its current form despite the harm discussed above. Any disruption that may occur is a problem of Defendants’ and NCAA member schools’ own making. The fact that the Court granted preliminary approval of the settlement agreement should not have been interpreted as an indication that it was certain that the Court would grant final approval. […] The court will delay denial of final approval to permit the parties to attempt to modify the settlement agreement so that members of the Injunctive Relief Settlement Class will not be harmed by the immediate implementation of the roster limits provisions. One way of achieving that could be to modify the settlement agreement to ensure that no members of the Injunctive Relief Settlement Class who have or had a roster spot will lose it as a result of the immediate implementation of the settlement agreement.” Wilken calls for the parties to meet with a mediator within 14 days about potential changes to the settlement. (link)

What Happens Next?...
+ The NCAA and power conferences released the following statement: “We are closely reviewing Judge Wilken's order. Our focus continues to be on securing approval of this significant agreement, which aims to create more opportunities than ever before for student-athletes while fostering much-needed stability and fairness in college sports.” (link)
+ Several athletic administrators are “privately urging their conference leadership to adhere to the judge’s recommendation and to grandfather in current athletes on rosters,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes that “power conference commissioners…[declined to] comment about Wilken’s order [after coming out of College Football Playoff Management Committee meetings] and many of them immediately [took] calls from their general counsels.” Meanwhile, one “high-ranking college leader” tells Dellenger: “We are playing chicken with a damn federal judge.” (link)
+ One concerned AD tells USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: “It’s insanity. She’s not supposed to be negotiating for the people who write letters." Another AD is less aggrieved: “It’s an easy fix. Coaches wanted to grandfather all along. I’m just annoyed it means more days without this being settled and (having) rules to operationalize it set in place." Berkowitz also highlights this sentence from Wilken’s order: “Because the settlement agreement is not fair and reasonable to the significant number of class members whose roster spots will be or have been taken away because of the immediate implementation of the settlement agreement, the Court cannot approve the settlement agreement in its current form.” That said, Wilken indicated that she is otherwise prepared to approve the settlement. (link)
+ Sportico’s Michael McCann observes that the “solution to the problem identified by Wilken is linguistically simple, but logistically problematic. The settlement could be reworded to state that current players do not lose their roster spots as a result of the settlement’s implementation. Wilken suggested that limits could be gradually implemented as attrition leads to current athletes graduating or otherwise no longer playing for a team. To date, the NCAA has been unwilling to make that change on grounds it has made numerous other concessions.” McCann also notes: “The fact that the college sports industry has acted as if her approval is a layup is a risk that the industry has taken, perhaps unwisely. Another risk is that even if Wilken approves the settlement, her approval might not happen for many weeks, which would keep it from being implemented in time for the 2025-26 academic year.” (link)

UAlbany Men’s Basketball HC Dwayne Killings suggests introducing two-way contracts similar to those used by NBA teams to help mitigate the chaos of the transfer portal. CBS’ Matt Norlander explains: “Killings wants to turn his America East program into a developmental system for high-majors. … Here's the idea: Many high-major schools wind up with players that, for whatever reasons, aren't prepared to play at that level when they get there. (Sometimes, the player and the coaching staff only realize this after the fact.) Instead of sticking around for four years to develop, most of these players now leave after one season if things don't go the way they hoped. The self-aware guys who bounce typically transfer down to a level much more suited to their skill sets. And then, sometimes, those same players wind up working their way back to the high-major level at 20, 21 or 22 years old, when they're truly capable of making an impact.” Killings proposes sending down-transfers from bigger programs to programs like Albany, where he’ll develop them, help in their pursuit of a degree, and then after a year or two, send these players back to their initial high-major spot. Killings: "We are speaking to coaches about identifying a player that, if he left the high-major ranks to come to Albany, a place with a recently renovated $16M arena, to get the opportunity to develop through playing, this could present a partnership that could change college recruiting as we move into the post-House settlement era.” (link)

Arkansas’s collective has sent two demand letters to players asking to fulfill buyout clauses, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who notes Razorbacks AD Hunter Yurachek’s comments earlier this week referred to “multiple players who left before NIL contracts expired, including Madden Iamaleava.” According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Arkansas is demanding roughly $200K back from Iamaleava. Portland State Football HC Bruce Barnum has launched an online fundraiser to help his football program pay for some expenses that weren’t in his budget. In a radio appearance with JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous webmaster last week, Barnum remarked: “Why bitch? Fix it.” Canzano notes the Vikings “need a little money to pay for a helmet-communication system between the quarterback and offensive coordinator, among other things. The fundraiser is ongoing. I think it’s cool that Barnum has decided to take matters into his own hands; readers know that the PSU team volunteers its time and enthusiasm every summer at Camp Exceptional.” As of publication time, PSU has raised $19,025 of its $15K goal.
