Several ADs and administrators tell The Athletic’s Ralph Russo and Justin Williams they believe the roster limits issue with the House settlement will be resolved, with one Power 4 AD remarking: “This settlement is not going to blow up over this.” Still, another AD submits: “We could have spun this into a win, that we were doing the right thing. Now, it looks like we’re being forced to do the right thing again.” Russo and Williams: “The potential doomsday scenario – in which the roster limit issue doesn’t get resolved and the settlement is denied – is not one that any of the administrators The Athletic spoke to have seriously considered. Each of them expressed confidence that this problem would get resolved and that the settlement was too important and had come too far to get derailed at the eleventh hour. … Resistant as the NCAA has been to adjusting the settlement, that grisly alternative (of a trial or trials which could threaten to bankrupt the NCAA) is why it worked toward a compromise in the first place, and it’s an outcome the organization cannot afford to risk.” (link)

U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer has dismissed a lawsuit led by former Kansas men’s basketball standout Mario Chalmers, finding the suit untimely, according to Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes: “While this decision is only for the Chalmers case, I imagine the other cases will rely heavily on this decision, if not adopt it completely. Of note, the court firmly rejected the plaintiffs' primary counter to the statute of limitations defense -- the continuing violation doctrine -- due to the alleged continuing violations not being new individual overt acts. The court also agrees with the NCAA that the plaintiffs' claims are precluded by the O'Bannon and Alston cases -- in other words, the court finds that the plaintiffs' claims were likely already covered by O'Bannon and/or Alston and that the plaintiffs can't sue over them again. The court also dismisses the plaintiffs' separate unjust enrichment claims, finding that the claims duplicate the dismissed antitrust claims and that these claims are similarly untimely. The statute of limitations was always going to be the barrier to success here, so this isn't too surprising. There's a reason why the House settlement has that temporal cut-off, and that reason is neatly demonstrated today.” (link); Full opinion. (link)

Cincinnati will name its new $134M indoor facilities as the Sheakley Indoor Practice Facility and Sheakley Athletics Performance Center in recognition of Larry and Rhonda Sheakley's generosity. The 84K-sq-ft practice facility will serve as the permanent home for the UC football team and includes a 120-yard football field equipped for multiple sports. The field will provide an all-weather home for Cincinnati football practices and year-round workouts and have direct access to the Performance Center's weight room, training room and performance nutrition fueling stations. The 96K square-foot Performance Center features three levels and includes offices for the football program. Spaces will also be allocated to nutrition, recovery, mental health services, equipment, and more. There will also be an athletics-only dining hall open to all student-athletes. (link)

Penn State Football HC James Franklin explains his approach to the House settlement’s roster limits and notes that “you’re allowed to carry a full roster right up to your first game. So, that is our plan is to keep everybody on the team as long as we possibly can, and then when the season is over, you’re able to get your roster right back up again. So, we would put those guys back on the roster during spring ball, during fall training camp. They have an opportunity to compete and everybody knows that. So we've talked about it, we've had some guys go into the portal because of that, but I think everybody else is comfortable with how it would stand based on how we’ve explained it to everybody.” Franklin also notes he doesn’t favor having to trim the roster and says: “To me, I wasn’t gonna cut to the 105 earlier than I had to with hope that this may happen like the judge is doing right now. But I also felt like I needed to tell them what could be coming if this happened so they have all the information and could make decisions. I don’t want to lose any of them. I’d like for these guys to stay a part of the program until they graduate.” (link)

NIL Daily’s Noah Henderson examines how the transfer portal has impacted the recruitment of high school prospects in men’s basketball and points out that from 2018–2020, the “Mountain West’s average recruit posted a composite rating of 87.99 – roughly equivalent to Jaden Steppe, the No. 240 player in the 2024 class. By 2025, that average has jumped to 90.05, comparable to Deuce Jones, the No. 184 player in the 2024 class. In just a few years, the Mountain West’s average recruit has climbed 56 spots nationally. The Atlantic 10 experienced a nearly identical surge. From 2018–2020, the A-10’s average recruit graded out at 87.31, comparable to Jalen Lee, the No. 250 player in 2024. In 2025, that figure has risen to 89.67 — equivalent to Garrett Sundra, the No. 193 player in the 2024 class — a 57-spot jump.” Henderson also notes Quinnipiac signed a trio of three-star players in 2025. For comparison, “from 2003 (the first year of recorded prep recruiting data by 247Sports) through 2024, Quinnipiac had signed only nine three-star recruits. The three players in their 2025 class include the second, fourth, and fifth highest rated recruits since 2003.” (link)

The New York Times’ Sapna Maheshwari examines North Carolina’s efforts to help student-athletes maximize their social media monetization, including bringing in Article 41’s Benjamin Gildin and Vickie Segar “to turn all 850 of its student-athletes into influencers.” Segar notes that UNC doesn’t get a cut of their earnings, but “they want every athlete at the school to make as much money as possible because it will get better athletes.” Maheshwari, though, points out that Article 41 “will take a 20% cut of the deals, which is typical among influencer management firms.” Illinois professor Michael LeRoy calls the conversion of student-athletes into influencers “another milestone in how this is evolving,” but adds: “This saddens me. Their bodies are being monetized on TikTok for the benefit of the school.” Segar admits that athlete-influencers are often more likely to be conventionally attractive but pushes back on the idea that the student-athletes she is pitching need to adopt what she calls a “thirst trap strategy.” Recent Tar Heels women’s basketball standout Alyssa Ustby notes that while she enjoyed success via TikTok (she earned more than $100K through brand deals last year), a teammate was frustrated by her own comparative lack thereof. LeRoy subsequently cautions that it’s worth remembering “these are undergrads, many of whom are teenagers. … If part of your NIL strategy as a school is to increase your student-athlete exposure to the social media ecosystem that is filled with irrationality and hate, you’re not helping the mental health of the athletes.” Lots more. The NCAA’s three Corporate Champions and 16 Corporate Partners combined to earn more than $213.3M in equivalent media value (EMV) from in-game sponsorship exposures during live telecasts of this year’s men’s and women’s basketball championships, according to SBJ’s David Broughton, who cites industry analysts Hive. Overall, the brands generated nearly 228 hours of total screen time for their respective logos, and Hive’s Mensio analytics platform detected 105 brands during the men’s tournament and 82 during the women’s event, resulting in a total of $546M of brand exposure. Broughton notes that apparel and equipment brands generated $302.4M (55%) in EMV. Nike, along with its affiliate Jordan Brand, represented 41 of the 68 teams in each of the men’s and the women’s fields, including three of the Final Four schools in each tournament. The two non-Nike Final Four schools —Auburn in the men’s field and South Carolina in the women’s — are Under Armour schools. AT&T earned $74M in EMV, more than any of the brands tracked. (link)

The Baltimore Sun’s Taylor Lyons joins D1.ticker’s Kristen Eargle to discuss Maryland’s AD opening and suggests that the biggest risk the Terps face is “that they kind of just become irrelevant in this new Big Ten landscape. I think football, unfortunately, is already trending that way. In men's basketball, like I said, it is their best path to winning a national championship, I believe, at least in the revenue sports. So, the biggest risk there is becoming irrelevant in those two sports in the Big Ten and just having Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State continue to exceed you in football, but then also maybe them and some of the other schools start to pass you in basketball, too.” On the other hand, Lyons believes Maryland has the potential to be “one of the most successful athletic departments in the Big Ten if everything’s run well. Look at football like I was just saying, they haven't been relevant over the past five, six years in the Big Ten, but I think they have all the capabilities to get there. You look at the recruiting footprint in the DMV, the Baltimore, the D.C. market is huge money-wise, so I think they have an opportunity to be relevant in football. And then basketball…that’s their best path in competing for championships and you can do that in the Big Ten. Kevin Willard just showed Maryland is not far removed from having a nationally relevant men's basketball program. The future could be bright in Maryland. It’s just going to take that right person to steer the ship.” (link); The D1.dossier for the opening is available, for those looking to win the job. (link)

Ohio AD Julie Cromer sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to reflect on developing culture and embarking on the university’s first Football HC search in 20 years. The search, which led to the hire of an internal candidate, provided Cromer and the Bobcats an opportunity to engage stakeholders in arenas such as NIL, season ticket sales and annual giving and incorporate student-athletes in the process of defining the program’s cultural priorities. Cromer also offers insight and reflection on the work of the Transformation Committee, including some of the issues that were left on the “cutting room floor.” Cromer: “Sometimes you have to take issues as they’re ready to be taken. Sometimes you have to pick the fruit when it's ripe. We didn’t get as far as we may have wanted but we set the table for a lot of conversations that are happening now, two years later. You can see those issues on the horizon, but they were not ripe. And I wish we could have gotten to some of the things that are tied up in the settlement, but I do feel like we opened the door for some of the discussion that led to where they are.” Full Q&A on ADU. Before investing in Football HC Bill Belichick and his staff, North Carolina had “already been shoring up its athletics budget by transferring millions of dollars from other institutional funds to support varsity sports,” according to The Assembly’s Matt Hartman and Zachery Eanes. Specifically, they report UNC supplied $21.4M to support athletics last year between direct payments, services, debt payments, and rental fees. That figure doesn’t include the $8M in student fees that go to athletics. While such transfers are common among many universities, Hartman and Eanes note that between 2011-22, UNC “provided less than $2M a year in services to athletics, but no direct payments or facilities payments.” Asst. AD for Communications Kevin Best tells Hartman and Eanes: “Consistent with our peer institutions, the University is investing some institutional funds to the athletic department on an annual basis.” Best also emphasizes that the funds come from neither state appropriations nor tuition dollars, adding: “This reflects the evolving business model nationwide and highlights the importance of athletics to our institution, our brand and our overall success. … This institutional support of Athletics has particularly benefited Olympic Sports as the college athletics funding model continues to evolve.” Lots more. Blueprint Sports has retained prominent sports attorney Tom Mars to represent the Arkansas Edge collective as it seeks to enforce the buyout clauses in the NIL agreements of former Arkansas WR Dazmin James (Cal) and QB Madden Iamaleava (UCLA). Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner, who is representing James, tells CBS’ Brandon Marcello he believes the clause is “unenforceable as written and applied, under Arkansas state law. For liquidated damages to be valid, they must reasonably estimate potential damages and apply when actual damages are hard to determine. Here, since Dazmin James received no payment and the agreement was terminated just a few days after execution, [Blueprint] suffered no harm. Thus, the clause appears to be a penalty rather than a fair estimation of damages, making it unenforceable." (link)

Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter observes that an “issue with having buyouts/liquidated damages tied to NIL agreements is that schools and/or collectives have to show the amount was a reasonable estimate of potential damages in the event of breach. But from not having the athlete’s NIL rights for the term, not their athletic services. I think it will be hard for many schools/collectives to show the amount of some buyouts was a reasonable estimate of their damages. Are they harmed to that level by not being able to use the athlete’s NIL? Much easier to show damages if agreements are for athletic services. That’s why you don’t see a lot of litigation relating to coaching buyouts. Contract buyouts are connected to damages resulting from loss of coaching services.” Heitner adds: “Further, does Arkansas want to be known as the school that sues its players, including those who haven’t even received any payment under the agreement at issue? A weird hill to die on.” (link)

Former Virginia Senior Assoc. AD/SWA/Women's Lacrosse HC Jane Miller sits down with Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz for a conversation about elevating middle managers and building confidence in the middle of one's career, communicating with coaches as a sport administrator, and navigating a variety of leadership styles across a career trajectory. Miller's top tip for new sport administrators? "Listen. Have an open mind." Miller also offers insight into the early days of the transfer portal and the unforeseen impact of NIL, noting that today, "very good administrators and very good coaches are leaving because this is not what they signed up for and it has become a different enterprise than it was when we started. I have such great respect for coaches who – even when I was an administrator and now as I’m out – because of what they have to do compared to what I had to do. And I coached two sports for a while, but that was nothing compared to what someone coaching nowadays [has to do].” Full Q&A on Connect. (link)

More from Disney CEO Bob Iger’s remarks at last week’s World Congress of Sports, where he noted that younger audiences are “gravitating to new platforms” and like “bite-size entertainment.” As it relates to Flagship, Iger explained the idea is to give younger fans more personalization, including multiple screens and camera angles. “Young audiences want a little bit more control, and technology gives them a little bit more authority to exercise the control. Streaming and the technology behind it will enable that.” Meanwhile, Iger promised not to abandon ESPN’s linear channels, which remain profitable. “There’s value, but it’s much more driven by serving the sports fan that is going to stay in the bundle, either because it’s comfortable for them, or they’re just not interested in becoming streaming customers. I like the fact that we remain loyal to them. … By the same token, if we’re not fishing where the younger fish are, ultimately, we lose our business. So leaning heavily now into the digital space – where we know a lot more people are going – is critical to serving those fans.” More from Puck’s John Ourand. (link)

The Atlanta Hawks “are part of a growing crop of sports teams that have created positions or refined roles with the intent of getting celebrity butts into premium seats,” according to the New York Times’ Emmanuel Morgan, who adds: “Stars can help excite fans and enliven the atmosphere of games on television and social media, while also leading to more focused partnerships down the line.” Hawks CEO Steve Koonin tells Morgan that “the lines blur and the audiences enjoy it because people don’t live in one box. They don’t say, ‘I’m just a sports fan.’ They love the opportunity to see and experience celebrities from all over the entertainment spectrum as part of the sports scene.” When demand is high for courtside seats and space is limited, Hawks VP for Entertainment Industry Relations Levetta Futrell explains social media following can be a deciding factor: “We’re just trying to prioritize and figure out how to make everybody happy, especially those who can amplify our experience and we can amplify theirs.” An NBA spokesman tells Morgan that at least five of the 16 teams in the playoffs have dedicated business department staff to handle celebrity and influencer relationships. Those teams include the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons. (link)
