Pomona-Pitzer AD Miriam Merrill will depart after five years to return to Hamilton as Chief of Staff/Secretary to the Board of Trustees. Hamilton President Steven Tepper: “Miriam was chosen from an extremely strong and well-qualified pool of candidates. She impressed the search committee with her integrity, innovation, diverse experience in higher education, demonstrated ability to partner collaboratively with colleagues, and commitment to building productive relationships with a range of constituencies. Furthermore, having spent much of her career in athletic administration, she is familiar with building effective teams, working toward a common goal, accountability to others, and establishing high expectations — all skills that will serve her well in this new role.” (link)

Retiring Ithaca AD Susan Bassett sits down with The Ithacan’s Jacob Infald to reflect on her career and dozen years leading her alma mater. Bassett says she would have retired earlier if not for the pandemic, adding the need to stabilize the department and budget and renovate Butterfield Stadium kept her around. On her retirement, she emphasized she has “enormous energy and passion. […] It’s more a matter of, what do I want to do in my life before I’m not able to do certain things.” On student-athlete development: “We want to, in the case of Ithaca College, aspire to run both a sport equity model and a gender equity model. And what I mean by that is we want a student in any one of our sports to feel equally valued as anybody. So we have some high visibility sports, obviously, but we put the same energy, effort and commitment, financial resources [and] facility resources behind all of our programs. It is very, very important to me that all of our students in all of our sports, whether they’re male or female, individual sport or team sport, feel supported, valued and like they have the opportunity to achieve their individual and team goals.” Asked about her legacy, Bassett: “I hope that people believe that when you have high expectations and when you work really hard towards your goals, anything is possible. And when you commit to something and persevere, you can achieve a lot, and you can help those around you become the best version of themselves. […] I also think what I hope for Ithaca College is that we should always, as an institution, think big, and that’s why I’m proud of the fact that we set a Division III record for attendance at MetLife Stadium in 2019 and we had over 40,000 people in Yankee Stadium in 2022 out-drawing the last six Pinstripe Bowls. I never sat back and said, ‘Well, I’m making a Division III decision today, or I’m solving a Division III problem.’ I always thought, ‘How do we take our resources, our assets, all of our skill, ability and talent, and achieve the most we can achieve?’” (link)

Henry Abbott, Founder of TrueHoop, discusses his new book "Ballistic" which follows the story of Dr. Marcus Elliott and the Peak Performance Project (P3). Abbott talks about how Dr. Elliott's research is being used by NBA athletes to prevent injury. Similar to the way biomarkers are used to inform of possible cardiac emergencies, P3 has developed a way to process data about body movement that can detect an impending athlete injury.

Gordon AD Jason Linders joins D3.ticker as the latest AD in Residence to dive into stepping into the chair after a tenured leader, his leadership approach and much more. Through his first year, Linders has tried to engage with as many student-athletes through home games and SAAC or team leaders and campus constituents as possible. To “build bridges with our campus partners,” Linders sends a weekly email to faculty and staff outlining department successes and upcoming events, organized the first-ever Athletics Chapel and more. “I’ve done a lot of listening in almost one year here at Gordon, continue to build relationships with campus partners, ensure we are in alignment with campus leadership and the mission of Gordon College, and as a leader, I always feel we must communicate a plan with clear expectations, as well as work to communicate the facts, costs, and challenges.” The Fighting Scots are in the process of creating a new strategic plan that will roll out in August but does not include changes to the mission or core values of the department that were in place “because we have been working on the strategic plan this academic year, but we have emphasized knowing and following that mission, and making decisions that are student-centered and consistent with our values (Faith, Character, Leadership, Competition, Service).” Linders’ leadership “centers around people + GROWTH.” Further: “My leadership has evolved mainly around being more intentional in my thought process, thinking more globally, assessing the big picture vs. through the lens of a program or position group, and using more emotional intelligence. Serving others is cliche, but as I tell my staff almost daily, leadership is not about a formal (or even informal) position of authority, it’s about the opportunity to build relationships, serve others, and provide guidance and/or resources to help others toward a specific direction or help them accomplish their goals.” More on BOSCA. U.S. District Judge Paul A. Engelmayer has dismissed a lawsuit led by former Kansas men’s basketball standout Mario Chalmers, finding the suit untimely, according to Boise State professor Sam Ehrlich, who notes: “While this decision is only for the Chalmers case, I imagine the other cases will rely heavily on this decision, if not adopt it completely. Of note, the court firmly rejected the plaintiffs' primary counter to the statute of limitations defense -- the continuing violation doctrine -- due to the alleged continuing violations not being new individual overt acts. The court also agrees with the NCAA that the plaintiffs' claims are precluded by the O'Bannon and Alston cases -- in other words, the court finds that the plaintiffs' claims were likely already covered by O'Bannon and/or Alston and that the plaintiffs can't sue over them again. The court also dismisses the plaintiffs' separate unjust enrichment claims, finding that the claims duplicate the dismissed antitrust claims and that these claims are similarly untimely. The statute of limitations was always going to be the barrier to success here, so this isn't too surprising. There's a reason why the House settlement has that temporal cut-off, and that reason is neatly demonstrated today.” (link); Full opinion. (link)

Financial risks are growing for universities that depend heavily on federal funding for research, according to a report released by S&P Global Ratings. Analysts in the report concluded that institutions with the highest S&P credit ratings are most likely to be hurt by the Trump administration’s federal research cuts. However, while universities could face financial strain, many of those most affected by the Trump’s policies have deep enough resources to weather disruption, at least in the short term, per the analysts, who explain: “We believe the universities affected by these announcements have adequate reserves to provide flexibility should material cuts transpire, especially as they could be phased in over several years.” The analysts specifically cited “strong fundamentals” such as sound management, liquidity and financial flexibility — at those institutions. USA Track & Field ran a total deficit of more than $12M in 2022 and 2023, its two most recently available budget years, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman, who reports: “More recently, it has laid off several highly paid employees. And this season, USATF has scrapped the L.A. Grand Prix and the Bermuda Grand Prix from its schedule. This is happening less than halfway through a 23-year sponsorship deal with Nike worth nearly $500M. Cash flow has been an ongoing problem, according to people familiar with the situation. In some cases, USATF has taken six months or more to pay out prize money. At the group’s Indianapolis headquarters, employees were told not to arrange plane travel more than a month in advance.” The USOPC last year instructed USATF to hire an outside law firm to undertake an independent review, which Bachman notes is ongoing. USATF CEO Max Siegel and COO Renee Washington maintain that employees weren’t told to hold off on arranging travel until the month before, and that prize-money payment delays are often caused by agents and athletes failing to file proper paperwork. Siegel: “If you look at the objective metrics in terms of revenue and everything else, it is clear that from 2013, our first full year on, we’ve had more resources, we’ve had better performance.” (link)
