Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines how the disparate schools across the NCAA can meet a high standard of medical care for student-athletes, and USCAH President/Big Ten CMO James Borchers says: “I think probably the biggest misperception is that there's a singular way that this [athlete medical care and compliance] needs to be accomplished. If there’s a standard for the largest institutions, that doesn’t necessarily mean that has to be applied at every institution.” While a Power 4 athletic department may not have a problem hiring eight medical professionals to meet certain standards, Borchers notes that a “DIII school probably can’t meet that requirement, so they have to think of a different way to meet that standard?” What would be bad for the industry, Borchers adds, would be for that smaller school to look at the Power 4, and decide “well, we can’t hire those eight people, so we can’t meet those standards.” Borchers adds: “I think there’s a significant intention [from schools] to say that we didn’t know, so we could maintain some level of deniability...and to be honest with you, that loses every single time.” (link)

Northwestern is launching the Kellogg Coaches Leadership Academy, which will provide business and leadership training specifically designed for collegiate coaches. The academy formalizes a partnership between the athletic department and the Kellogg School of Management and will include curriculum in business analytics, crisis management, dynamic relationship shifts, complex negotiations and selling in uncertain situations. The inaugural cohort will include head coaches and key staff from all 21 of Northwestern's varsity programs. Wildcats AD Mark Jackson: "At Northwestern, we have very talented coaches that inspire excellence and develop our student-athletes in extraordinary ways every day. What better way to invest in the talents of our coaches than by tapping into the world-class faculty right here at Northwestern. The Kellogg Coaches Leadership Academy will help further train our coaches and staff in the critical skills needed in today's collegiate athletic world." (link)

Useful rundown from ESPN’s David Purdum on the type of prop bets the NCAA will prohibit from sports books if they want access to the new data feed with Genius Sports: Player-specific underperformance, negative outcomes for an individual student-athlete, injuries or health-related wagers, decisions by officials or replays, off-the-field developments like activity connected to the transfer portal, novelty items like the color of a Gatorade bath & honors dictated by public vote. (link)

According to one Big Ten men’s basketball coach, “this [transfer portal] cycle was out of control. So many players were overpaid, backups even. It was all a money grab, no one looked at fit.” An SEC coach agrees, telling On3’s Jamie Shaw: “This has been the craziest cycle yet. Everyone made double what they thought they were going to get. There are no rules. There are no regulations.” Meanwhile, an ACC coach says: “I think most agree that what we are doing is unsustainable. With the pending House settlement, which will cost all universities valuable revenue for the next 10 years, there is little chance universities can consistently come up with $7-10M every single year. We can all blame the agents/third parties for driving up the price, but the reality is for right now, we have plenty of schools willing to pay the price tags demanded.” At the other end of the spectrum, an SEC coach tells Shaw: “I think this all is sustainable. Sports are the center of American society, and people want to see their teams win. So, I think the market may begin to balance out the haves and have-nots as far as deep-pocketed boosters are concerned.” Part of the market reset can be attributed to the timing of the House settlement hearing this month, according to a Big 12 coach, who explains: “There was so much false hysteria created around the April 7 house settlement deadline. We all had extra time on the back end. I think we’re going to look back and people will say they rushed into a decision in fear of that April 7 date.” (link)

Toledo Men’s Basketball HC Tod Kowalczyk is finding success in the transfer portal by reaching out to players he recruited out of high school and tells the Toledo Blade’s Kyle Rowland: “Most of the guys that we’ve had success with, we had prior relationships with, even going back to Rian Pearson, who followed me [from Wisconsin-Green Bay]. … Having that prior relationship really means a lot because you know the people, you know the family, you’ve followed their career path.” Kyler VanderJagt, who is transferring in from Central Michigan, confirms that prior relationships with the staff made the process easier. “It almost felt like a second home. It was a no-brainer for me. I’m very comfortable with my decision.” Rockets AHC Justin Ingram adds: “It benefits us a ton with the transfer portal because everything is done so fast, and you have to get to know somebody in such a short amount of time. Already having an established relationship with the player, the family, and the people around him, there’s a lot of familiarity. There’s trust. If you are familiar with the people, and you trust them, and you like them, it makes it easier for you to make a quicker decision.” (link)

Arizona Football GM Gaizka Crowley joins the Moneyballers: Inside the College Front Office podcast to discuss the evolution of the GM role and how he views his responsibilities for the Wildcats. Crowley explains: “What I always tell our people is we need to watch players with the coach's eyes. Like, that's our job. My job isn't to find the best players that I like the most. My job is to find the best players for the University of Arizona that fit our culture and what our head coach wants. … We could have 100 staff members, but if we're all watching different things and we all prioritize different things, we'll have more guys watch. But at the end of the day, that's not what it's about. It's about finding the right players for us with our culture, scheme, city, community.” Regarding his message for agents writ large, Crowley explains that “I don't think they realize how small my world is. … I think, my nickel's worth of advice for agents is to realize when you have a conversation with School A and a conversation with School B, those two people probably know each other. And know that if there's information that's not being spoken, that's not true, we're going to find out pretty, pretty quickly. … But, the biggest thing is if you want your guy kind of at the top of the stack, if you will, if there's connections, if there's certain relationships with coaches or there's scheme fits, those kinds of things, that definitely helps.” Full podcast. Washington Deputy AD/SWA Kim Durand sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to talk about how her team navigated three AD transitions within the span of an academic year while also dealing with a Football HC change and transitioning from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten. Durand also offers insight into maintaining stability for her direct reports as well as for student-athletes and notes that she encouraged her staff to remain grounded in the department’s “sole purpose” of serving athletes while remaining open to new ideas from new leaders. Durand: “We are relentlessly committed to our culture…but that has to be something you're working on on a daily basis. You can't take it for granted. You can't say,’ Hey, these other areas are a big focus.’ You have to spend time getting to know each other, checking in on each other, supporting each other, having tough conversations when those things have to happen. So, I think a lot of that [is] we recruit people into our system at every level who are committed to that and then we consistently, continuously model that as we go forward.” More on ADU. (link)

@1QLeadership Question: Are athlete injuries predictable?
Henry Abbott, Founder of TrueHoop, discusses his new book "Ballistic" which follows the story of Dr. Marcus Elliott and the Peak Performance Project (P3). Abbott talks about how Dr. Elliott's research is being used by NBA athletes to prevent injury. Similar to the way biomarkers are used to inform of possible cardiac emergencies, P3 has developed a way to process data about body movement that can detect an impending athlete injury.
Abbott also goes into the importance of storytelling and its impact on the world of sports. 🎧 on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini met with the media before the final spring practice for Sun Devils Football. Rossini says ASU has added 6,000 new season ticket holders, will add a total of 225 new scholarships as part of the House settlement (Baseball will go up to 34, Men’s Hockey to 26), “This is a moment to resource them, to get them ahead and to stay ahead.” As for potential upgrades to Desert Financial Arena: “Lots of exciting conversations going on at DFA. I think we’re still tracking towards a summer announcement on a multi-year phased renovation that creates a great campus college basketball venue.” More from SunDevilSource.com’s Chris Karpman. Construction of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium is “on time and on budget” and Kansas AD Travis Goff adds: “They’re working really hard — double shifts, 600 people on site at any given moment, and everything is on track for that August 23 home opener.” The only part of the first phase that isn’t expected to be completed by then is the conference center in the northern section of the stadium. However, that won’t impact the game day experience, and Goff said it will be open “in the middle point of the fall.” Lots of photo updates. (link)

More from William & Mary AD Brian Mann on Tribe Football’s move to the Patriot League from the Richmond Times Dispatch’s John O’Connor: “I think it comes down to a couple of things for us. First is, we wanted to be connected to the University of Richmond and play them in football every year, and when we can do it the last Saturday before Thanksgiving with the hopes that that game will have some postseason implications, that’s a place where we want to be. And Richmond going in, without reducing anything that they were doing in football, we took notice of that. And so when the conversation started up not long ago, we had a different perspective on how the Patriot League was viewing their future.” O’Connor goes on to write that William & Mary would be open to further expansion of Patriot League Football with Villanova at the top of the list. San Diego has inked a deal with JMI Sports to be its MMR partner. The agreement runs through the 2028-29 competition seasons. Toreros AD Kimya Massey: “This first-of-its-kind relationship for USD Athletics is focused on creating community activation, which will enable more partnerships and expand our collaborations with local brand entities.” Also of particular note: “This partnership comes at an optimal time, as USD opens the naming rights for Torero Stadium for the first time in school history. This iconic venue, which not only serves as the home of USD’s athletic teams but also hosts two professional sports teams—the San Diego Legion of Major League Rugby and the California Redwoods of the Premier Lacrosse League—will now offer a unique opportunity for companies and organizations to align their brands with a prominent, multifaceted sports venue in San Diego.” Within the market, JMI already works with both San Diego State & UC San Diego. The Eagle’s Avi Paulson examines the unique situation whereby American cannot play amplified music at or bring in outside groups to the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex in response to demands from neighbors and the city government, and Eagles AD JM Caparro notes the restrictions not only negatively impact the atmosphere, they also cost money in lost revenue. “Imagine trying to recruit some of the best players in the world when you can’t have music, [and] there’s almost no atmosphere at the games.” Paulson points out that in some neighborhoods, there may be some wiggle room, but the Spring Valley neighborhood of Washington, D.C., “is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in the District, and is currently in the top 1 percent for housing prices across all U.S. neighborhoods, according to Zillow data. The Washington Post describes Spring Valley as a ‘haven for the elite,’ home to “Supreme Court justices, billionaires and no fewer than three U.S. presidents.” Changes are unlikely in the cards for the near future for the Jacobs complex, which is also prohibited from having lights. The NCAA has determined that violations occurred at FGCU when former Men’s Tennis HC Davidson Kozlowski and his staff conducted impermissible tryouts with prospects and provided impermissible benefits and recruiting inducements. Separate from the men’s tennis violations, the school and enforcement staff agree that beginning in the 2022-23 academic year and continuing through the spring of 2024, FGCU improperly certified 18 student-athletes in 10 sports, resulting in 18 violations of initial eligibility, amateurism, seasons of competition and/or transfer eligibility legislation. Those student-athletes then received expenses from and/or competed for the school when they were ineligible or not certified. Penalties include two years of probation; a reduction of unofficial visits, recruiting communications and off-campus recruiting in January 2025; a $25K fine; vacation of team and individual records over the course of the 11 months in which the ineligible players competed; and a one-year show-cause order that includes a 30% suspension from regular-season contests for Kozlowski.
