Mark has been a beacon to the University and the Cookeville community, ushering in new levels of athletic, academic, and community success. Rutgers has retained TurnkeyZRG to assist the newly formed advisory committee on the school’s AD search. The committee consists of Senior Advisor to the Rutgers University Foundation President Marco Battaglia; Rutgers Business School Professor and Board of Advisors Chair Arthur Certosimo; Field Hockey HC Meredith Civico; Rutgers Board of Governors member Hollis Copeland; Rutgers Board of Trustees member Robert H. Friedman; Academic Athletics Oversight Committee Faculty Representative/School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Dean of Academic Programs Ann Gould, BOG member Gary B. Taffet; SVP for Strategy/Chief of Staff Brian Ballentine; and EVP/CFO J. Michael Gower. President Jonathan Holloway will work with the group and, when named, his successor as university president to select the finalist. Interim AD Ryan Pisarri said earlier this year that he “hopes to be part of the process” when the university began looking for candidates to fill the role full time. (link, link)

While nothing has been finalized, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that a “proposal to phase in the new roster limits [for the House settlement] has emerged.” Dellenger adds that “such a move – the grandfathering-in of roster positions – comes with a bevy of questions, concerns and uncertainties. Will schools be mandated to grandfather-in roster positions? Or will it be voluntary? What of players who have already transferred elsewhere? What happens to recruits who signed with other schools because their original commitment wasn’t honored? And, most notably, how exactly will the judge react to whatever proposal is put forward?” Baylor AD Mack Rhoades told Dellenger last week that “it makes it difficult because there are institutions – including ourselves – that have already had conversations with head coaches about roster limits and some of those coaches have already had conversations with those particular individual student-athletes. How do you go back to do that? What will be interesting moving forward is, is this a mandated grandfather-in or is it optional and each school will choose how to do that? If it’s mandated, there’s some work to do. There are schools, programs and coaches and ADs who are going to have to undo some of those conversations.” Michigan AD Warde Manuel last week also indicated the Wolverines have made decisions based on the settlement but believes in grandfathering in the roster limits. “This is what we should be doing. … It was wrong for us to go to the (roster) number in just one year.” While details of the proposal remain unclear, Dellenger notes the “current belief among multiple college administrators is that the brief will permit schools, at their own discretion, to protect or grandfather in any current player on a roster and those cut this year due to roster limits. A school would be expected to track their protected roster spots with a rolling list of exceptions. Those protected athletes would presumably roll off the exception list as their eligibility expires.” (link)

The Pac-12 has finalized its TV partnerships for the 2025 season, with The CW, ESPN and CBS combining to show the 13 home games involving Oregon State and Washington State. Commissioner Teresa Gould: "Having Pac-12 football featured across three leading broadcasters in CBS, The CW and ESPN in 2025 will provide tremendous exposure to showcase Oregon State, Washington State and our brand in the Pac-12's final season before expansion. We are thrilled to continue our partnership with The CW, to welcome a new partner in CBS Sports and to see a return of Pac-12 football on ESPN." ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura notes that “The CW, which had the rights to all the home games for OSU and WSU last season, will retain most of the 13-game allotment with nine games on its air, with the other four split between CBS and ESPN.” The announcement did not include terms of the current agreement or details about 2026 and beyond. The USF Board of Trustees has approved the updated plan for the Bulls’ new football stadium. The plan presented by USF leadership includes a project cost of $348.5M, which has been revised from what was approved by the board in June 2023. Since that time USF has added to the project’s scope, including design and structural upgrades for potential future stadium expansion beyond the current expected seating capacity of approximately 35,000, a build-out of academic space in the facility, vertical expansion of the Tampa General Hospital Center for Athletic Excellence, and enhanced locker room amenities. The funds added to the project will come from interest earnings on the $200M in financing previously issued by the USF Financing Corp. The project team will now move forward with additional clearing at the site in May with full construction set to pick up shortly after. The stadium is expected to be able to host events beginning in the fall of 2027. (link)

Boise State inks Football HC Spencer Danielson to a contract extension through the 2029 season. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the five-year contract doubles his salary, “as he'll average $2.2M over the course of the deal.” Specifically, Thamel notes Danielson's deal will “start at $2M per year this season and increase by $100K over the course of the five years. The total deal will end up at nearly $11M over the five years. He is expected to be the second-highest paid coach in the Mountain West behind UNLV's Dan Mullen, who is set to make $3.5M this year. Utah State's Bronco Mendenhall is also set to make $2M next year.” (link, link)

Oklahoma Softball HC Patty Gasso is all for playing Texas in the Cotton Bowl and says she recently received a text from Ohio State HC Kirin Kumar about a Sooners-Buckeyes showdown at Ohio Stadium. “The Shoe? Is that what you call it? I don’t know the dimensions or anything but we would do it in a heartbeat. We would love to do it here but I know that it does take some work to make that happen, just doesn’t fit right. But if we could do the Cotton Bowl, we could go to Ohio State, we could do wherever if it is going to help this sport grow.” Texas HC Mike White says playing in the Cotton Bowl is a “possibility,” adding: “Obviously, the growth of the game is big right now and we want to showcase it.” (link)

According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, just 106 early entrants entered the 2025 NBA Draft. “That's the lowest number of early-entrants since 2015, down from a peak of 363 in 2021, just before the NCAA's NIL era officially started. The number of early-entrants spiked starting in 2016, as the NCAA instituted sweeping new rules allowing players to ‘test the waters,’ while maintaining their eligibility. The advent of the two-way contract in 2017 also opened up 60 NBA roster spots that didn't exist previously. With hundreds of college basketball players now making over $1M per season (far more than a two-way contract, valued around 600K, but non-guaranteed), it makes sense that so many players are forgoing the NBA draft. Will NCAA salaries end up stabilizing? We'll see.” (link)

Marshall AD Christian Spears and the school have mutually agreed not to renew his contract, which expires in March of 2026. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Spears will stay on as the AD until the school finds a replacement. Also from Thamel: “The timeline of lining up a replacement is not known. Select school officials have been briefed on the decision, per sources. An announcement of the plans is expected in the near future.” (link)

Former Arizona State swimming student-athlete/House v. NCAA lead plaintiff Grant House was “kept in the dark about some aspects of the case — mainly, he was not informed that roster limits would be part of the case, and they have sparked widespread backlash,” according to Five Star Fans Founder/CEO Tina Provost, who notes much of the ire has been directed at House directly. House explains that “the cuts have been happening for years, but now it feels like I’m the face of it. It’s hard to hear the anger, especially when people think I’m the reason their dreams are being cut short. I can only speak to my role in the settlement, but I didn’t come into this wanting to hurt anyone. I didn’t know that roster limits would be part of the case.” Provost goes on to submit that “as a former female DI athlete in a nonrevenue-generating sport, I know this opinion is unpopular. There’s another aspect of the settlement that I believe will cause mass non-revenue team cuts and it haunts me, too: the application of traditional Title IX to revenue-sharing. My hypothesis is that if we force schools to dilute revenue-sharing dollars equally across all programs and both genders, it puts the sustainability of the revenue-generating sports — usually football and basketball — at budget risk. If the sports that cover the budget for all the other sports cannot sustain, nonrevenue-generating programs are at risk of being totally cut.” Instead, Provost suggests “finding more ways for the athletes to get supported and socialized. That can be through new media outlets and promotion around matches. This takes work from the people who want to see those programs thrive. It is not the job of someone else to build what another wants.” (link)

The ACC is “strongly considering reducing its [basketball] conference schedule so teams can schedule more marquee nonconference games and improve the league's chances of landing more at-large teams in the NCAA Tournament,” according to CBS’ Brandon Marcello, who adds: “Commissioner Jim Phillips, the conference's athletics directors and ESPN have been in active discussions to move from 20 conference games to 18 starting with the 2025-26 season, sources told CBS Sports. The expectation among administrators is that the proposal will be approved when the league's administrators meet in May for its annual spring meetings in Florida.” Marcello also reports the 18-game proposal would consist of one game against 16 teams and two games against a permanent rival (home and away) each season. NBA executives are keeping an eye on how NIL and the transfer portal are impacting prospects, “more mentally than physically,” according to Heavy Sports, which quotes one exec as saying: “You have to wonder what a guy is all about after he’s been through all this. Once you know a guy can play, you have to figure out where his head is at and whether he’s going to dig in and work to develop his game. You wonder about that when you hear the stories about talking with other schools during the season about transferring and how the money is affecting the teams they’re on now. It’s great that these guys are finally getting to share in the wealth, but you’re wary of players that get used to looking for a quick way out as soon as the smallest bad things happen.” Another personnel staffer adds: “Put it this way: you’re doing a lot more digging on what a guy is really like. You need more intel from people around him, because you’re not going to be able to tell just from when you sit down to interview the guy. By that point, these kids have been coached by their agents to say all the right things.” (link)

Maryland Men’s Basketball HC Buzz Williams will earn $4.8M in the first year of his six-year deal, which Sportico’s Daniel Libit notes is a $720K jump from former HC Kevin Willard’s most recent salary. Libit also notes that Williams’ guaranteed compensation will increase by $100K each year, reaching $5.3M in the final season of the contract (2030–31). Williams can also earn a single one-year extension if the Terps make the NCAA Tournament, and he is due a $1M retention bonus if he’s still leading the Terps as of April 15, 2031. The MOU, which Libit obtained via a public records request, also stipulates that Williams will “agree not to seek or apply for other positions without prior notice to the university” and includes, per Libit, “more aggressive buyout terms than Willard faced. If Williams terminates the contract before April 2026, he must pay Maryland $10.5M – more than double Willard’s $4.5M obligation under a similar timeline. Williams’ buyout decreases to $8.5M in Year 2, $3.5M in Year 3, $2.5M in Year 4 and $1M in Year 5. If Maryland terminates the deal without cause, it will owe Williams the remainder of his base and supplemental pay.” UMD will also cover Williams’ $1M buyout from Texas A&M. (link)

Former Michigan Football/current Los Angeles Chargers ACs Jesse Minter and Steve Clinkscale have agreed to one-year and two-year show-cause penalties, respectively, as a result of recruiting violations. The NCAA notes that the “pending portion of the case for the school and five individuals will be considered separately by the Committee on Infractions, after which the committee will provide its full decision on the case. ... The committee will not release or discuss further details in the case to protect the integrity of the ongoing process, as the committee's final decision is pending.” (link)

Tennessee baseball student-athlete Alberto Osuna has filed a motion in federal court asking it to reverse the decision in his case. The filing comes after the District Court of New Jersey awarded Rutgers football student-athlete Jett Elad a preliminary injunction that granted him eligibility for the 2025 season and reads, in part: "Osuna has presented substantially the same evidence as Elad and [Vanderbilt QB Diego] Pavia, and there is no compelling justification for the difference in treatment. There is no fairness or justice in allowing Pavia and Elad to play, while requiring Osuna to remain sidelined." The Knoxville News Sentinel’s Mike Wilson notes that “because Elad and Pavia gained eligibility, the filing noted the decision in the Osuna case is the outlier because the courts in those cases reviewed testimony from the same expert witness − Dr. Joel Maxcy − relied upon in Osuna's case and reached the same conclusion.” Also from the filing: "This Court now has the opportunity to do what the NCAA will not – put meaning behind its hollow words. The Middle District of Tennessee did it for Pavia on substantially the same evidentiary record. The District of New Jersey did it for Elad on substantially the same evidentiary record. In the interest of correcting a manifest injustice, this Court can and should do it for Osuna." (link)

The U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights has ruled that Penn violated Title IX by allowing Lia Thomas to compete on the women's swimming team in 2022. From the department’s press release: “OCR notified UPenn President J. Larry Jameson that the University’s policies and practices violated Title IX by denying women equal opportunities by permitting males to compete in women’s intercollegiate athletics and to occupy women-only intimate facilities.” The ED’s proposed Resolution Agreement requires Penn to take the following actions: “Issue a statement to the University community stating that the University will comply with Title IX in all of its athletic programs; restore to all female athletes all individual athletic records, titles, honors, awards or similar recognition for Division I swimming competitions misappropriated by male athletes competing in female categories; and send a letter to each female athlete whose individual recognition is restored expressing an apology on behalf of the University for allowing her educational experience in athletics to be marred by sex discrimination.” Penn has 10 days to voluntarily resolve these violations or “risk a referral to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for enforcement proceedings.” (link)
