Nebraska AD Troy Dannen on the Huskers Radio Network last night touched on a variety of topics. Regarding the proposed roster limits: “There are a lot of rules to operationalize that settlement. You can say there's a 105-person limit on the football roster, but what does that mean? When? When is it 105? What if somebody gets hurt, do you get to replace them? All these questions that go along with it. Now apply that times, for us, 24 sports. So, operationalizing whatever happens is going to be a massive challenge. It's not just revenue sharing. It's a lot of rules and regulations going along with it. How do we enforce this? How do we make sure that the third-part piece that's carved out is supposed to be fair market value. How do we ensure that that is indeed happening. … With the exception of baseball and football, there have not been roster limits in the sports we offer at least, and I'd like to get back to that. I'm in the minority there, and I understand that. Nebraska is unique in what it's done with its football limit. We'll be over 105, I think, in any way if you grandfather this or phase it in, it's going to allow more players on the roster next year than maybe we were anticipating a few weeks ago.” (link)

More from Lincoln as Nebraska has nearly completed removal of the field turf inside football’s Memorial Stadium, which will be replaced with new turf in time for this season, but by 2026 will have grass. Dannen: “...because a lot of the stadium work will have to be done from the inside, the idea of putting grass in there and tearing it up just isn't too appetizing. So putting a good turf surface in, turf that can be rolled up to bring equipment in, and then rolled back in that transitional phase.” A “complete reconstruction of the grass practice fields outside of the Osborne Legacy Complex” is also underway. Take a look. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White during a recent Big Orange Caravan stop in Nashville: “The (House) settlement could work, and I hope it does. There's been a lot of speculation around collective bargaining. Every professional sports organization in our country has collective bargaining for a reason. It's very complicated. These are students. We don't have just one sport. We have 20 sports, only two of which are profitable. It's a really complicated situation that we've been deep in for three, four years. I think everyone is searching for answers.” White also touched on the drama surrounding the Nico Iamaleava situation: “Our fans really get it. We need to operate the right way. We need to build the right kind of team chemistry and team culture, locker room culture and all those things. I know (Football HC Josh Heupel) is really excited about the guys he's got in the locker room and the guys he's got in his quarterback room. [...] in this instance, Josh, I think, had to make a hard decision.” (link)

“Candidly, we have several areas, particularly in our Olympic sports from a facilities standpoint, that are just woefully behind.” That’s Missouri AD Laird Veatch, who adds specifically on baseball: “It had gotten to the point where [field turf] is not a luxury, it is a necessity. In order to have safe, competitive competition, we have to be able to provide those surfaces and do those things. […] That is an extremely competitive sport in this league and that is an area, just like I said, where we have not necessarily invested to the level that we need to, candidly. So we have to continue to do that, continue to support our coach, and help him be successful, and that’s a process.” (link)

Michigan State’s Board of Trustees voted earlier this month to approve the proposed “Spartan Gateway District,” but during that vote, trustee Sandy Pierce recused herself, as she has long sat on the board of Barton Marlow - the Southfield-based developer set to handle a $150M portion of the plan, including construction of the 6K-seat arena at the center of the new development. The proposal passed six to one, with trustee Mike Balow voting against the project, objecting to the budget’s reliance on the university’s general fund. He suggested the development should only be pursued if it can be covered by athletics revenue or donor support. (link)

CBS News has released a statement following its interview with North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick: “When we agreed to speak with Mr. Belichick, it was for a wide-ranging interview. There were no preconditions or limitations to this conversation. This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place and after it was completed.” (link)

Evansville and Men’s Basketball HC David Raglund have agreed to a contract extension. No additional details. (link)

Iowa Football HC Kirk Ferentz laments the current state of college football with the continued uncertainty around Judge Claudia Wilken’s final approval of the House settlement over roster limit concerns. “Not to make light of it, but this really says it all. It’s … April 29, and we still have no idea what the rules are here for August. Think about that for a second. College football’s a fairly significant – it’s a big operation. A lot of revenue. … A lot at stake here, and we still don’t know what the rules are. That shows you just how screwed up things are right now, quite frankly. I guess that’s one good thing about getting older. I’ve learned not to sweat everything or rise and fall with every little thing that goes on. We’ll figure it out as it goes.” (link)

Virginia is hopeful endowment gifts like the one UVA received from Gene and Terry Lockhart to support the tennis program become the new model for Olympic sports. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel notes the Lockharts’ gift “sprang from the visions and efforts of UVA President Jim Ryan, VP for Advancement Mark Luellen, Senior Executive Director for Principal Gifts Dirk Katstra, Virginia Athletics Foundation Executive Director Kevin Miller and Hoos AD Carla Williams. Luellen explains: “This is not like Virginia athletics or the VAF going down one path and the university going down the other. We’re all working together to accomplish this goal.” Luellen adds that the “academic side of the house has been focused on [endowments] for a very long time. … It’s not necessarily rocket science. It’s just more about how do we do what we’ve done on the academic side and carry it forward [to athletics]? I think there’s a lot of upside here, tied to our culture.” Miller tells Teel that “it’s not an existential crisis, but in 3-5 years, it very well could be. And I don’t want to sit around and not do anything about it. We have to be proactive about it. So we’re trying to get more and more of our scholarships endowed to get these programs so they can be sustainable in perpetuity.” (link)

The statue of South Carolina Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley has been revealed. Staley is shown standing on a ladder, holding the freshly cut net, much like she’s done for an NCAA title three times and an SEC Tournament title nine times in the 17 years she’s been leading the Gamecocks. (link)

The News & Observer’s Jadyn Watson-Fisher reports on how ACC softball coaches have rallied around Florida State HC Lonni Alameda following her breast cancer diagnosis, and Duke HC Marissa Young remarks: “To see another really good person in the game have to go through hard times and suffering, it’s tough. You really hate to see her have to go through something challenging. But, at the same time, I feel like God gives his toughest battles to his best soldiers. Lonni is definitely one of them. We’re just happy that we can be a small part in helping support her.” After coaches were made aware of the diagnosis, NC State HC Lindsay Leftwich worked with FSU AC Travis Wilson and the Wolfpack’s creative team to come up with a specially designed helmet decal that teams across the league could wear. They landed on the traditional pink breast cancer awareness ribbon with Alameda’s initials on one side and a braid on the other; a nod to her signature hairstyle, and Leftwich explains: “I was hoping for something that was a little more personal, that she could hold on to and use for years to come.” Lots more. Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich writes on notable language in the House settlement that “aims to ensure the plaintiffs’ lawyers won’t disrupt the yearslong, multimillion-dollar federal lobbying campaign in Congress the NCAA and Power 5 conferences have waged to protect amateurism and rein in the athletes’ rights movement. The settlement essentially says lawyers for the college athletes—who have sued the NCAA—-must support any legislation in line with the settlement, and remain publicly neutral on key related issues, like athlete employment.” More specifically from the paragraph in Article 7 of the settlement: “(The plaintiff lawyers must) take no position, and thus be neutral, in all instances and in all forums and venues, on the issue of whether student-athletes should be considered/deemed ‘employees’ or whether collective bargaining should be permitted for compensation of student-athletes.” Former Duke Men’s Basketball student-athlete & current attorney Richard Ford pushed back on the language back in January: “It would transform Class Counsel from advocates for their clients into lobbyists for the NCAA, creating a conflict of interest.” (link)

Montana Men’s Basketball student-athlete Kai Johnson has filed a motion for a preliminary injunction as part of his lawsuit seeking an additional year of Division I eligibility in place of his time in Division II, per Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich. (link)

In the “first seating program adjustment in seven years,” Dayton is increasing the investments needed to secure Men’s Basketball season tickets. Flyers AD Neil Sullivan in a letter to season ticket holders: “This is not funding administrative costs or non-basketball operations. These revenues are being reinvested directly into the core of the players’ share. [...] I acknowledge the natural questions around what our total team compensation might look like and how that will align with our competitive goals. At this stage, it’s still too early to determine an exact figure, but we are under no illusions about the scale of investment required, which is well into the millions.” More from Sullivan’s outreach: “For most seats in the lower arena, the 2025-26 modification will be less than the 2017 change tied to our arena project and fall approximately in the 7-12% range in the first two years, with an escalator in year 3. Seats in the 300 level will increase $25 each, and starting this season, seats in the 400 level, where an Arena Seating Program contribution was not previously required, will now be part of the program at $25 per seat or just over a dollar per game.” The Dayton Daily News’ David Jablonski has a deeper breakdown. Bates (DIII) hires Princeton Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Stacey Bunting as its next AD, starting July 1. President Garry Jenkins: “Stacey Bunting's student-centered approach and demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive culture embody the values that define Bates. Her arrival marks an exciting new chapter for Bates — one that will raise our outstanding athletics program to new heights.” Parker Executive Search assisted with the process. (link)

The Texas Football roster budget for 2025 “currently sits somewhere between $35M and $40M” a source tells the Houston Chronicle’s Kirk Bohls. That figure “counts the likely revenue-sharing allotment expected to be $20.5M as well as payouts through the Texas One Fund. This also figures to be a one-time exorbitant expense because athletic director Chris Del Conte and others have said the school plans to phase out its collective in favor of the revenue-sharing via the House settlement and with the move to name, image and likeness payouts through corporations.” It’s unknown how many Longhorns will receive at least a $1M salary with QB Arch Manning rating as “by far the highest-paid Texas player” on the roster, although he reportedly receives no money from the school with he and his family acquiring all his deals with no UT assistance. “It’s just unsustainable,” the source said. “The next season after this year, the whole world will be back to reality.” (link)

Wake Forest Men’s Basketball HC Steve Forbes and his wife Johnetta have donated $500K to the Demon Deacons’ Men’s Basketball Excellence Fund. Of note: “The Wake Forest Deacon Club's innovative Sports Excellence Fund programs enable contributors to designate funds to the program of their choice which has resulted in 1,701 commitments for more than $12.1M in this year alone. Including all athletic fundraising initiatives, Wake Forest has generated over $37M in total commitments this fiscal year.” (link)

North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick has released a statement following this weekend’s CBS Sunday Morning interview in which he states CBS strayed away from the agreed upon focus of the interview, his new book, adding: “After this occurred several times, Jordon, with whom I share both a personal and professional relationship, stepped in to reiterate that point to help refocus the discussion. She was not deflecting any specific question or topic but simply doing her job to ensure the interview stayed on track. […] The final eight-minute segment does not reflect the productive 35-minute conversation we had, which covered a wide range of topics related to my career. It presents selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative – that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation – which is simply not true.” (link)

Coaches Corner presented by D1.relocation…
+ Iowa announces that Renee Gillispie won’t be returning to her role as Softball HC after sitting out the 2025 season due to a personal health matter. (link) + Boise State Football HC Spencer Danielson isn’t the only member of the Broncos’ football coaching staff receiving a raise. According to FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett, the on-field AC’s will receive nearly $500K more as a group this upcoming season than in 2024, and that’s despite Offensive Coordinator (OC) Dirk Koetter, last year’s highest-paid AC, making a move into an analyst role. Defensive Coordinator Erik Chinander rises to the top of the AC salary list, netting a $110K raise to presumably become the first BSU AC to cross the half-million-dollar salary mark at $550K. Percentage-wise, OC/TE’s Coach Nate Potter (77% - $200K raise to $460K) and Edges Coach Jabril Frazier (67% - $80K raise to $200K) were the biggest upward movers, while six AC’s earned at least a $75K boost. Overall for 2025, Boise State will pay $1.585M more to Danielson and staff for a total combined salary of $5.245M. (link)

UTRGV announces that after a 10-plus-year stint in the WAC, its Men’s Soccer program will join the OVC as an affiliate member starting with the 2026 campaign. AD Chasse Conque: “It’s an exciting day for our men’s soccer program. We are grateful for the leadership of commissioner Beth DeBauche and the opportunity to compete in the OVC starting in 2026 and for the opportunity to spread the UTRGV brand to another part of the country. The move to the OVC gives our men’s soccer program a chance to compete for a conference championship while enhancing the student-athlete experience.” (link)

San José State joins forces with the San José Giants and Diamond Baseball Holdings to help support the renovation of Excite Ballpark. Highlights of the collaboration for the Spartans’ baseball program include full access for practices and home games, a new dedicated clubhouse with coaches’ offices, access to a state-of-the-art weight room as well as indoor and outdoor hitting and pitching tunnels and the opportunity to name the field after legendary SJSU HC Sam Piraro. AD Jeff Konya: "This partnership marks a significant milestone for San José State Baseball. By joining forces with the San José Giants, we are providing our student-athletes with an exceptional playing environment while also enhancing the fan experience for all of our supporters.
