Michigan State has parted ways with AD Alan Haller after three and a half years. President Kevin Guskiewicz will “seek a new athletic director who can best navigate the changing landscape of collegiate athletics while working closely with both internal and external stakeholders to move Michigan State forward as a leader among the Power Four institutions.” Men’s Basketball HC Tom Izzo and Deputy AD/SWA Jennifer Smith will serve as Co-Interim ADs. TurnkeyZRG will assist with the search for the Spartans’ next AD. (link)

Collegiate Sports Connect hires Tufts (DIII) AD John Morris as its first CEO. The hire underscores Connect's “intensified commitment to be the essential, one-stop-shop software solution for data-driven decision-makers in collegiate athletics. [...] Under Morris’s leadership, Connect will accelerate its mission to empower athletic departments and industry professionals, expanding beyond talent identification and recruitment into a holistic, one-stop-shop database of resources and operational insights including salary benchmarking tools, key vendor and personnel contract details plus a wide array of industry data. As Stanford is going through an AD search, The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel & Lindsay Schnell take a look at the Cardinal’s marketplace positioning with General Manager of Football Andrew Luck remarking: “College football is such a major part of the cultural zeitgeist. There’s a respect and understanding from our leadership that it matters, and that it matters in a big way. … I like where we are today. A long way to go, but it’s pointing in the right direction.” Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is highly involved with athletics, talked to Mandel & Schnell about the transfer portal, as well as the balance of athletics & academics: “Our goal is going to have to be, once we’ve recruited someone, retain them. [...] Athletes want to be respected in the classroom as much as they are on the field. The one thing we will never compromise on is, no faculty member will stand for being in front of a student who doesn’t belong in that classroom.” Former Women’s Basketball HC & current Special Advisor to the AD Tara VanDerveer: “To lift up (36) sports and be good at such a small school during these very turbulent times, that’s hard. But I think we’re going to figure it out, and I think we’re going to do it the Stanford way.” Lots more, including Interim AD Alden Mitchell on revenue sharing: “We’re going to compete.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake chats with Oregon State AD Scott Barnes about the Pac-12’s media rights future and more. On the balance between exposure and revenue for the 2026 media deal: “If the amount of revenue could solve all my problems, I’d say let’s just take the revenue and not worry about anything else. But obviously, in this case, we need both. But as you think about our trajectory, you think about this rebuild and this launch that’s going to take place a year from July 1, that exposure is super important. It becomes a catalyst for our future. It really does. So we’re happy with the distribution that we have among the three partners.” Barnes adds the league would like to have the kickoff windows locked down for the benefit of teams and fans. On the “nonsensical hyperinflation” in NIL ahead of the House settlement and the new enforcement arm: “There’s going to be a leveling off of these crazy deals… and oh, by the way, it’s got to be legitimate NIL activity. So the dollars are going to come down. […] This is a separate entity with professional enforcement staff. Nimble, small, autonomous decision making, and a big stick. Penalties that will absolutely hurt. Look, this is imperfect, right? Nothing’s going to be perfect. But this enforcement arm is completely different than anything you’ve seen at the NCAA level.” (link)

“It’s absolutely a challenge,” says NCAA Managing Director of Enforcement Mark Hicks on attempting to prevent games from being compromised, eliminating corruption and preventing student-athletes from being harassed and threatened by unsuccessful gamblers. That’s what makes the NCAA’s latest move to strike a deal with technology firm Genius Sports to authorize licensed sportsbooks to receive official data from championship events “a bit of savvy from an organization rarely known for it,” according to ESPN’s Dan Wetzel. More from Hicks: “There is this belief that sports match manipulation is an organized crime deal and there's no denying that. But at the same time we've entered into a space where with ease [athletes] can place bets on themselves or give information to the sophomore across the hall that, 'Hey I'm not feeling great today.'” Part of Wetzel’s view: “To be able to use the valuable real-time data -- considered the best available for accurate, in-game wagering -- sportsbooks must make a number of concessions. Most notable is the banning of individual prop bets, particularly bets on underperformance, that the NCAA considers the most easily manipulated and thus make student-athletes enticing targets. It is far easier, say, for a single athlete to score fewer points than expected than for an entire team's performance to be rigged. … As such, sophisticated criminal gambling rings are incentivized to get to that one player. The NCAA says this is particularly the case at smaller schools in the middle of losing seasons where players display a lack of awareness of their vulnerability, not to mention lack of NIL money in their Venmo accounts. Athletes can also easily place bets on themselves, or have a friend do it, in ways that seem more innocent than being targeted by some mobster but is still the same crime.” (link)

“We need to get rid of the under the table stuff of buying players.” That’s UCLA Women’s Basketball HC Cori Close at the 2025 espnW Summit, who adds she is in favor of barriers to NIL with the addition of revenue sharing. With the Bruins’ entire 2024 freshmen class entering the portal, Close believes the reason was the bevy of talent on the team. “There was only one other team in the country that had more McDonald’s All-Americans than we did and I think there was just not enough minutes to go around and we didn’t have any seniors. We had the potential for everybody to come back, so those freshmen were like, there’s no improvement chance for me. […] I learned a lot as a leader that probably it is impossible to keep that many people happy this day and age.” One of Close’s priorities is hiring a GM and bolstering her staff with people who can handle the transfer portal, talk to agents and more. Close also believes the new WNBA CBA will have implications for college hoops. (link, link)

On3’s Andy Staples writes on the potential implications of the Arkansas-focused Arkansas Edge collective’s legal action against former Razorback/current UCLA QB Madden Iamaleava, as the collective seeks around $200K, which is more than twice what he had been paid upon his departure from Fayetteville. Staples: “A win by Iamaleava would reinforce the current landscape, which features almost zero negative incentives for transferring. If Arkansas Edge collects a significant amount of money — either by trial win or settlement — it might make players think twice about breaking existing deals.” Heitner Legal’s namesake Darren Heitner on the liquidated damages clauses in NIL contracts: “Traditionally, non-competes are applied to employees but can sometimes be extended to independent contractors. Yet, such restrictive covenants must be reasonable in scope, protect a legitimate business interest, and not impose an undue hardship on the athletes or violate public policy. The scope in the agreements I have reviewed tend to be unreasonable, the undue hardship is usually extreme, and the public policy favors athlete mobility through the transfer portal.” (link)

Tennessee Baseball student-athlete Alberto Osuna’s motion to expedite his motion for reconsideration of denial of his motion for preliminary inunction has been denied per Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter adds: “With the inconsistent rulings on eligibility rules, I doubt we see the NCAA issue another blanket waiver (on the 5 yr clock) like with [Vanderbilt QB Diego] Pavia.” (link)

Nebraska AD Troy Dannen on the Huskers Radio Network last night touched on a variety of topics. Regarding the proposed roster limits: “There are a lot of rules to operationalize that settlement. You can say there's a 105-person limit on the football roster, but what does that mean? When? When is it 105? What if somebody gets hurt, do you get to replace them? All these questions that go along with it. Now apply that times, for us, 24 sports. So, operationalizing whatever happens is going to be a massive challenge. It's not just revenue sharing. It's a lot of rules and regulations going along with it. How do we enforce this? How do we make sure that the third-part piece that's carved out is supposed to be fair market value. How do we ensure that that is indeed happening. … With the exception of baseball and football, there have not been roster limits in the sports we offer at least, and I'd like to get back to that. I'm in the minority there, and I understand that. Nebraska is unique in what it's done with its football limit. We'll be over 105, I think, in any way if you grandfather this or phase it in, it's going to allow more players on the roster next year than maybe we were anticipating a few weeks ago.” (link)
|
More from Lincoln as Nebraska has nearly completed removal of the field turf inside football’s Memorial Stadium, which will be replaced with new turf in time for this season, but by 2026 will have grass. Dannen: “...because a lot of the stadium work will have to be done from the inside, the idea of putting grass in there and tearing it up just isn't too appetizing. So putting a good turf surface in, turf that can be rolled up to bring equipment in, and then rolled back in that transitional phase.” A “complete reconstruction of the grass practice fields outside of the Osborne Legacy Complex” is also underway. Take a look. (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White during a recent Big Orange Caravan stop in Nashville: “The (House) settlement could work, and I hope it does. There's been a lot of speculation around collective bargaining. Every professional sports organization in our country has collective bargaining for a reason. It's very complicated. These are students. We don't have just one sport. We have 20 sports, only two of which are profitable. It's a really complicated situation that we've been deep in for three, four years. I think everyone is searching for answers.” White also touched on the drama surrounding the Nico Iamaleava situation: “Our fans really get it. We need to operate the right way. We need to build the right kind of team chemistry and team culture, locker room culture and all those things. I know (Football HC Josh Heupel) is really excited about the guys he's got in the locker room and the guys he's got in his quarterback room. [...] in this instance, Josh, I think, had to make a hard decision.” (link)
|
“Candidly, we have several areas, particularly in our Olympic sports from a facilities standpoint, that are just woefully behind.” That’s Missouri AD Laird Veatch, who adds specifically on baseball: “It had gotten to the point where [field turf] is not a luxury, it is a necessity. In order to have safe, competitive competition, we have to be able to provide those surfaces and do those things. […] That is an extremely competitive sport in this league and that is an area, just like I said, where we have not necessarily invested to the level that we need to, candidly. So we have to continue to do that, continue to support our coach, and help him be successful, and that’s a process.” (link)

Michigan State’s Board of Trustees voted earlier this month to approve the proposed “Spartan Gateway District,” but during that vote, trustee Sandy Pierce recused herself, as she has long sat on the board of Barton Marlow - the Southfield-based developer set to handle a $150M portion of the plan, including construction of the 6K-seat arena at the center of the new development. The proposal passed six to one, with trustee Mike Balow voting against the project, objecting to the budget’s reliance on the university’s general fund. He suggested the development should only be pursued if it can be covered by athletics revenue or donor support. (link)

CBS News has released a statement following its interview with North Carolina Football HC Bill Belichick: “When we agreed to speak with Mr. Belichick, it was for a wide-ranging interview. There were no preconditions or limitations to this conversation. This was confirmed repeatedly with his publisher before the interview took place and after it was completed.” (link)

Evansville and Men’s Basketball HC David Raglund have agreed to a contract extension. No additional details. (link)

Iowa Football HC Kirk Ferentz laments the current state of college football with the continued uncertainty around Judge Claudia Wilken’s final approval of the House settlement over roster limit concerns. “Not to make light of it, but this really says it all. It’s … April 29, and we still have no idea what the rules are here for August. Think about that for a second. College football’s a fairly significant – it’s a big operation. A lot of revenue. … A lot at stake here, and we still don’t know what the rules are. That shows you just how screwed up things are right now, quite frankly. I guess that’s one good thing about getting older. I’ve learned not to sweat everything or rise and fall with every little thing that goes on. We’ll figure it out as it goes.” (link)

Virginia is hopeful endowment gifts like the one UVA received from Gene and Terry Lockhart to support the tennis program become the new model for Olympic sports. The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel notes the Lockharts’ gift “sprang from the visions and efforts of UVA President Jim Ryan, VP for Advancement Mark Luellen, Senior Executive Director for Principal Gifts Dirk Katstra, Virginia Athletics Foundation Executive Director Kevin Miller and Hoos AD Carla Williams. Luellen explains: “This is not like Virginia athletics or the VAF going down one path and the university going down the other. We’re all working together to accomplish this goal.” Luellen adds that the “academic side of the house has been focused on [endowments] for a very long time. … It’s not necessarily rocket science. It’s just more about how do we do what we’ve done on the academic side and carry it forward [to athletics]? I think there’s a lot of upside here, tied to our culture.” Miller tells Teel that “it’s not an existential crisis, but in 3-5 years, it very well could be. And I don’t want to sit around and not do anything about it. We have to be proactive about it. So we’re trying to get more and more of our scholarships endowed to get these programs so they can be sustainable in perpetuity.” (link)

The statue of South Carolina Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley has been revealed. Staley is shown standing on a ladder, holding the freshly cut net, much like she’s done for an NCAA title three times and an SEC Tournament title nine times in the 17 years she’s been leading the Gamecocks. (link)

The News & Observer’s Jadyn Watson-Fisher reports on how ACC softball coaches have rallied around Florida State HC Lonni Alameda following her breast cancer diagnosis, and Duke HC Marissa Young remarks: “To see another really good person in the game have to go through hard times and suffering, it’s tough. You really hate to see her have to go through something challenging. But, at the same time, I feel like God gives his toughest battles to his best soldiers. Lonni is definitely one of them. We’re just happy that we can be a small part in helping support her.” After coaches were made aware of the diagnosis, NC State HC Lindsay Leftwich worked with FSU AC Travis Wilson and the Wolfpack’s creative team to come up with a specially designed helmet decal that teams across the league could wear. They landed on the traditional pink breast cancer awareness ribbon with Alameda’s initials on one side and a braid on the other; a nod to her signature hairstyle, and Leftwich explains: “I was hoping for something that was a little more personal, that she could hold on to and use for years to come.” Lots more.
