#10: AD Advisors & Timark have published a study that analyzed every single Men’s Basketball transfers back to 2019 (14,000+ moves). Here are some of the core findings: “Approximately 65% of all the Division I basketball-playing student-athletes who entered the transfer portal, regardless of the competition level their career began at, either transferred down a level or did not find a new home. At the highest competition level in this study (Tier 1), the Power 4 conferences and the Big East, 70% of student-athletes who entered the portal transferred down or did not find a new home. At the lowest competition level in this study (Tier 3), which was the majority of DI programs, 61% of student-athletes who entered the portal transferred down or did not find a new home. For those student-athletes, the only down transfer destinations are programs outside of Division I.” Tons more. (link)

#9: During last week’s Championships Committee meeting, the group discussed the role of Regional Advisory Committess following the implementation of NPI, concluding they should “remain in place for the immediate future,” noting, they serve as valuable conduits of communication for each sport and sport committee, championship site representatives and professional development opportunities. Also of note, the new Colonial Women’s Golf Conference has been granted an AQ bid starting in 2027-28, subject to no material membership changes, and RIT has been selected as the 2026 joint DII and DIII Women’s Lacrosse Championship host site. #8: Athletics Admin consultant KC Smurthwaite reiterates his position that more schools will drop down from DI to DIII because “adding a $20M revenue-sharing bill to an athletic department’s budget is no small matter. Schools don’t have to contribute the full amount – but even a modest $2.5M payout has to come from somewhere. Combine that with the loss of walk-ons, and you’re facing a double whammy. Gone are the tuition, housing, and fees that walk-ons provided.” One administrator tells Smurthwaite they expect 50 fewer student-athletes next year after opting in. “We were always encouraged by the president’s office to bring on walk-ons—they filled dorms and paid tuition and fees.” That school estimates a loss of $19K per walk-on which, when multiplied by 50, means that school is taking a $1M hit. Meanwhile, an enrollment cliff is looming. As such, Smurthwaite observes that “college leaders and athletics administrators are now asking the hard questions: Who are we? What do we want to be? What are we trying to accomplish here? Those are valuable conversations—and necessary for institutional alignment. However, these factors also lead to some tough decisions, especially in smaller public and private schools.” (link)

#7: Saint John’s (MN) taps former DII and DIII AD Dan O’Brien as its Interim AD. O’Brien most recently served as Football HC/Director of Charitable Gaming at Holy Family Catholic High School. #6: At this week’s DIII Management Council meeting, the group approved noncontroversial legislation to deregulate gambling on pro sports, with Council Chair/Wisconsin-Eau Claire AD Jason Verdugo noting: “Exploring the concept of a safe harbor or limited immunity for student-athletes involved with sports betting reaffirms that harm reduction and education will continue to be paramount. We are seeking to deregulate betting on professional sports because we believe it will be more likely that student-athletes and staff will seek help for problem gambling.” The council also approved the introduction of a Coaches Connect Program for three sports this upcoming year, a pilot waiver program for DIII student-athletes to continue to compete while enrolled at another institution that has a formal academic partnership with their school and does not offer athletics, and a formal process for implementing federated playing rules. Legislatively, the group approved sponsoring legislation to add Women’s Flag Football to the list of Emerging Sports for Women. Other approved noncontroversial proposals include aligning major junior ice hockey with other participation prior to enrollment, deregulation around outside financial donations and partnerships with pro sports teams and more that would potentially be approved in final form at the council’s July meeting. #4: Averett will suspend its Women’s Lacrosse program after this season due to low participation numbers. AD Danny Miller: “This was a difficult decision. The health and safety of our student-athletes is a priority. With difficulties in recruiting and hiring a head coach, we couldn't in good conscience go into next year with a roster around the minimum number of players and no substitutions or allowance for injuries.” (link)

#3: The NESCAC will begin participating in the DIII Football Playoffs starting in 2026.
