#10: Lincoln Memorial names Stephen F. Austin (DI) Assoc. HC Tony Jasick as its new Men’s Basketball HC. (link) |
#9: Athletics Admin consultant KC Smurthwaite reiterates his position that more schools will drop down from DI to DIII because “adding a $20M revenue-sharing bill to an athletic department’s budget is no small matter. Schools don’t have to contribute the full amount – but even a modest $2.5M payout has to come from somewhere. Combine that with the loss of walk-ons, and you’re facing a double whammy. Gone are the tuition, housing, and fees that walk-ons provided.” One administrator tells Smurthwaite they expect 50 fewer student-athletes next year after opting in. “We were always encouraged by the president’s office to bring on walk-ons—they filled dorms and paid tuition and fees.” That school estimates a loss of $19K per walk-on which, when multiplied by 50, means that school is taking a $1M hit. Meanwhile, an enrollment cliff is looming. As such, Smurthwaite observes that “college leaders and athletics administrators are now asking the hard questions: Who are we? What do we want to be? What are we trying to accomplish here? Those are valuable conversations—and necessary for institutional alignment. However, these factors also lead to some tough decisions, especially in smaller public and private schools.” (link)

#4: San Francisco State is proposing a student-fee increase of $32 to $100 per semester starting this fall to keep the athletic department open. If approved, the fee would increase by $25 each year for the next three years and then increase at by 5% annually. Interim AD Brandon Davis tells the Golden Gate Xpress’ Lourence Altourino if no increase is passed, the Gators would be cut after 2025-26. Davis: “This amount, which was last increased more than 15 years ago, no longer covers the escalating costs of maintaining a competitive and inclusive NCAA Division II program. To keep the show going, we have got to be able to sustain ourselves moving forward. The student fee increase is the only way to do it in this short amount of time. […] At some point, we also have to invest in what’s important at San Francisco State. What does the university want to look like? We talk so much about how we’ve been known as a commuter campus for so long, but we don’t want to be that anymore. We want people to have something to do on campus. If we’re not here on the weekends, what is? What fills that void? And for an extra $32, we provide an awful lot.” (link)

#1: Limestone Assoc. VP for Communications and Marketing K.C. Barnhill tells The Post and Courier’s Anna Mitchell the institution will end in-person classes and athletics after this semester, with the university to continue offering online classes. President Nathan Copeland says Limestone is $30M in debt, in addition to a series of lawsuits, and the need for a $6M donation would get the university through September. (link); The Limestone Board of Trustees is exploring possible funding opportunities to allow the institution to remain open, with another board meeting set for Tuesday the 29th. President Nathan Copeland: “I’m grateful for this potentially positive development and ask everyone to be patient while our Board awaits more information. In the meantime, out of an abundance of caution, we need to move forward as if our on-campus activities are ending at the end of this semester and we will possibly offer on-line classes moving forward. I regret the uncertainty of the situation, but we must be exceptionally cautious.” (link)
