U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) & former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban are part of a meeting next Tuesday with President Donald Trump to discuss college athletics. Tuberville: “The one thing we can do is we can make every state be on the same level [for NIL money]… Now, between that, we have to come up with some rules for transfer portals and possible contracts for players, all the things that make college football the greatest sport ever. We do not want to turn into minor league sports. We can do things, we just gotta get it passed. [...] I think we can get it on the floor, the problem is getting it past a Democrat group that really wants nothing to do with making this country better. They don't care about college sports or education, they worry about the power that they control in this country. It's a hard way to go, but if anybody can get it done, it's President Trump, and hopefully we can have some discussion to get on the right track toward helping the NIL and college sports. [...] Sooner or later, it'll affect the fans that pay that ticket not knowing who the players are with no loyalty. There's no carryover or loyalty to schools that these fans love to support.” (link)

The Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari looks ahead for the next Michigan State AD: “Haller’s successor will also need to navigate with the unstable situation he and his colleagues around the country are grappling with, along with the potential additions of revenue streams the school has eschewed – selling corporate naming rights to Spartan Stadium and Breslin Center, among other venues – as well as the potentially costly renovations or replacement of the football stadium. Not to mention most likely the inevitable retirement of an iconic basketball coach in [Tom] Izzo, whenever that time comes.” (link)
|
The Lansing State Journal’s Graham Couch offers his view of the situation at Michigan State: “Haller cares deeply about the whole of MSU athletics. He refused to consider cutting sports, even staring down the barrel of a new financial model. He was offended by his swanky new office at 1855 Place, while the conditions for some athletes were embarrassing at Jenison Field House. MSU should want that instinct in its athletic director. The challenge is, you can only have so many priorities. And football is Priority Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 — players' salaries, stadium renovations, donor relations, fan experience, etc. — followed by men’s basketball and then hockey, women’s hoops and so on and so forth. So on and so forth can’t get in the way of football. [...] the timing of Haller's exit is likely so (President Kevin) Guskiewicz has time to find the person he wants and for the opening to fall during the spring and summer, when sitting athletic directors are most likely to make a move. It increases the candidate pool, unless he already has someone in mind. The next AD's top priorities: Making sure MSU football has the resources to contend in this new world and, down an ever-shortening road, to adequately replace Izzo.” (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch spoke to the media this week on a number of topics. On the pending House settlement: “We’ve made a lot of decisions up until this point and we’ll continue to adjust and work through that as it finalizes. … There are a lot of challenges, a lot of unknowns, but we get enough information where we’re able to make some key decisions. … There’s been a ton of planning going on. You’re definitely building the plan on the fly, so to speak.” On roster limits: “We’re now right at a point with the settlement where we’re waiting to hear what’s that final piece with the roster limits and how does this work out.” On the transfer portal: “That is one of the many things we need to work through, is our calendar and how we manage [the] transfer portal, not only for football, [but] for all of our sports that there needs to be adjustments that continue to take place after it is settled.” (link)

In response to the news that Texas will reportedly have a $35M-$40M football roster for the upcoming season, Tennessee Danny White remarks: “I think it’s hard to know what’s true. There’s so many numbers being thrown out. We are as competitive as anyone. I think in the NIL space, we came out the gate as a leader and we’re going to continue to have our foot on the gas, and knowing how our resources have grown – so in the last four years, we’ve grown from $140 million in annual revenue and will close the books this year closer to $280 (million) – we’ve almost doubled, and that’s this fan base. That’s why we’re here today. Whatever the rules of engagement are, if it’s about investing in our teams and making sure they have every competitive advantage possible, that’s what we’re going to do. We have a competitive administration. We have competitive coaches. We’re not generating all this revenue to put it in some coffers to make me feel good. We’re generating revenue to reinvest in our programs to win at a high level. … We have a lot to learn in the six months or so. If this settlement is approved, what are the rules of engagement? The clearinghouse, how does that work? We have a great market. We’re not in some small college town, so any rule engagement, I think we’re well set up. … If it’s about elite donors, we’ve got phenomenal elite donors. If it’s about the size of the fan base, we’ve led the country in combined attendance between football and men’s and women’s basketball the last two years. We have a sold-out football stadium with 23,000 on a waiting list. Men’s basketball, baseball, softball – sold out. There’s not another school in the country that can say that. We’re ready to compete. We can generate sponsorship for ourselves and for our student-athletes.” (link)

UAB has started adding sales tax to ticket purchases as part of its strategy to fund House settlement revenue sharing. Blazers AD Mark Ingram: “Other schools have added other fees to their tickets, but we felt that this would be the most practical.” Also from ABC 33/40’s Sumner Harrell: “UAB said it is also fundraising for the Bartow Arena Renovation project, which aims to modernize amenities and generate additional revenues. Ingram expressed gratitude for the ongoing efforts, noting, ‘This facility serves as the front porch of UAB and UAB Athletics, and apart from UAB Hospital, no other building on campus attracts as many visitors annually.’” (link)

From in front of the Law360 paywall: “A California federal judge granted preliminary approval Wednesday to a group of roughly 1,000 Division 1 volunteer baseball coaches for their settlement under which the NCAA would pay $49.5 million to resolve their proposed antitrust class action challenging a since-repealed ‘uniform wage fix’ bylaw.” (link)

One of the challenges with college ice hockey coaches pulling from the now-eligible pool of Canadian Hockey League players is that many of them are not academically eligible because they have not taken the required 16 NCAA-approved core classes. College Hockey Inc Executive Director Sean Hogan: “The current group of CHL players haven't thought about the NCAA. They made the decision to go to the CHL. They weren't trying to meet the requirements of the NCAA. We knew there would be a gap in this education, because they've never thought about it before. They've never had to think about it. … We've had conversations with the commissioners. They've said, 'We don't want to be known as a league that can't keep our players eligible.' They want to get it right. We've done education sessions for each league and each team's (academic advisor). With the new group coming in, we're less likely to have issues. They'll go in knowing they have two roads in front of them.” (link)

The NCAA Men's Wrestling Rules Committee at its meeting this week proposed modifications to the matside video review process for the 2025-26 season, recommending to allow third-party reviewers to be able to consult with the referee about pertinent information on a coach's video review challenge. Additionally, committee members recommended allowing coaches to retain their video challenge if there is obstruction in any part of the video sequence that is being challenged. Coaches also would retain their challenge if the action that is being questioned is not in the frame of the video. The committee also recommended making mouthguards required for competition, starting next season. Several other rules recommendations were proposed, as well. Next step is the June 10 discussion by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel. (link)

The Louisiana House Appropriations Committee voted Monday to advance House Bill 639, which will increase the tax on sports gambling from 15% to 32.5%. The higher rate aligns with the tax the state places on video poker. In addition to generating $2M for addiction programs, the bill alters the tax revenue split and puts 25% into a Supporting Programs, Opportunities, Resources and Teams (SPORT) fund that would benefit student-athletes at the state’s DI public universities. Representative Neil Riser (R-Columbia), who sponsors the bill: “The need is so high. When you start talking about the SEC, talking about any level of athletics right now, it’s changed so dramatically. Even like ULM…just to be competitive [in recruiting], it takes facilities, when you’re dealing with [athletes] they require you to have all those things.” The fund is expected to receive more than $31M in dedicated funding annually, with each school receiving approximately $2.8M each year. Michigan State has parted ways with AD Alan Haller after three and a half years. President Kevin Guskiewicz will “seek a new athletic director who can best navigate the changing landscape of collegiate athletics while working closely with both internal and external stakeholders to move Michigan State forward as a leader among the Power Four institutions.” Men’s Basketball HC Tom Izzo and Deputy AD/SWA Jennifer Smith will serve as Co-Interim ADs. TurnkeyZRG will assist with the search for the Spartans’ next AD. (link)

As Stanford is going through an AD search, The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel & Lindsay Schnell take a look at the Cardinal’s marketplace positioning with General Manager of Football Andrew Luck remarking: “College football is such a major part of the cultural zeitgeist. There’s a respect and understanding from our leadership that it matters, and that it matters in a big way. … I like where we are today. A long way to go, but it’s pointing in the right direction.” Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is highly involved with athletics, talked to Mandel & Schnell about the transfer portal, as well as the balance of athletics & academics: “Our goal is going to have to be, once we’ve recruited someone, retain them. [...] Athletes want to be respected in the classroom as much as they are on the field. The one thing we will never compromise on is, no faculty member will stand for being in front of a student who doesn’t belong in that classroom.” Former Women’s Basketball HC & current Special Advisor to the AD Tara VanDerveer: “To lift up (36) sports and be good at such a small school during these very turbulent times, that’s hard. But I think we’re going to figure it out, and I think we’re going to do it the Stanford way.” Lots more, including Interim AD Alden Mitchell on revenue sharing: “We’re going to compete.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake chats with Oregon State AD Scott Barnes about the Pac-12’s media rights future and more. On the balance between exposure and revenue for the 2026 media deal: “If the amount of revenue could solve all my problems, I’d say let’s just take the revenue and not worry about anything else. But obviously, in this case, we need both. But as you think about our trajectory, you think about this rebuild and this launch that’s going to take place a year from July 1, that exposure is super important. It becomes a catalyst for our future. It really does. So we’re happy with the distribution that we have among the three partners.” Barnes adds the league would like to have the kickoff windows locked down for the benefit of teams and fans. On the “nonsensical hyperinflation” in NIL ahead of the House settlement and the new enforcement arm: “There’s going to be a leveling off of these crazy deals… and oh, by the way, it’s got to be legitimate NIL activity. So the dollars are going to come down. […] This is a separate entity with professional enforcement staff. Nimble, small, autonomous decision making, and a big stick. Penalties that will absolutely hurt. Look, this is imperfect, right? Nothing’s going to be perfect. But this enforcement arm is completely different than anything you’ve seen at the NCAA level.” (link)

“It’s absolutely a challenge,” says NCAA Managing Director of Enforcement Mark Hicks on attempting to prevent games from being compromised, eliminating corruption and preventing student-athletes from being harassed and threatened by unsuccessful gamblers. That’s what makes the NCAA’s latest move to strike a deal with technology firm Genius Sports to authorize licensed sportsbooks to receive official data from championship events “a bit of savvy from an organization rarely known for it,” according to ESPN’s Dan Wetzel. More from Hicks: “There is this belief that sports match manipulation is an organized crime deal and there's no denying that. But at the same time we've entered into a space where with ease [athletes] can place bets on themselves or give information to the sophomore across the hall that, 'Hey I'm not feeling great today.'” Part of Wetzel’s view: “To be able to use the valuable real-time data -- considered the best available for accurate, in-game wagering -- sportsbooks must make a number of concessions. Most notable is the banning of individual prop bets, particularly bets on underperformance, that the NCAA considers the most easily manipulated and thus make student-athletes enticing targets. It is far easier, say, for a single athlete to score fewer points than expected than for an entire team's performance to be rigged. … As such, sophisticated criminal gambling rings are incentivized to get to that one player. The NCAA says this is particularly the case at smaller schools in the middle of losing seasons where players display a lack of awareness of their vulnerability, not to mention lack of NIL money in their Venmo accounts. Athletes can also easily place bets on themselves, or have a friend do it, in ways that seem more innocent than being targeted by some mobster but is still the same crime.” (link)

“We need to get rid of the under the table stuff of buying players.” That’s UCLA Women’s Basketball HC Cori Close at the 2025 espnW Summit, who adds she is in favor of barriers to NIL with the addition of revenue sharing. With the Bruins’ entire 2024 freshmen class entering the portal, Close believes the reason was the bevy of talent on the team. “There was only one other team in the country that had more McDonald’s All-Americans than we did and I think there was just not enough minutes to go around and we didn’t have any seniors. We had the potential for everybody to come back, so those freshmen were like, there’s no improvement chance for me. […] I learned a lot as a leader that probably it is impossible to keep that many people happy this day and age.” One of Close’s priorities is hiring a GM and bolstering her staff with people who can handle the transfer portal, talk to agents and more. Close also believes the new WNBA CBA will have implications for college hoops. (link, link)

On3’s Andy Staples writes on the potential implications of the Arkansas-focused Arkansas Edge collective’s legal action against former Razorback/current UCLA QB Madden Iamaleava, as the collective seeks around $200K, which is more than twice what he had been paid upon his departure from Fayetteville. Staples: “A win by Iamaleava would reinforce the current landscape, which features almost zero negative incentives for transferring. If Arkansas Edge collects a significant amount of money — either by trial win or settlement — it might make players think twice about breaking existing deals.” Heitner Legal’s namesake Darren Heitner on the liquidated damages clauses in NIL contracts: “Traditionally, non-competes are applied to employees but can sometimes be extended to independent contractors. Yet, such restrictive covenants must be reasonable in scope, protect a legitimate business interest, and not impose an undue hardship on the athletes or violate public policy. The scope in the agreements I have reviewed tend to be unreasonable, the undue hardship is usually extreme, and the public policy favors athlete mobility through the transfer portal.” (link)

Tennessee Baseball student-athlete Alberto Osuna’s motion to expedite his motion for reconsideration of denial of his motion for preliminary inunction has been denied per Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter adds: “With the inconsistent rulings on eligibility rules, I doubt we see the NCAA issue another blanket waiver (on the 5 yr clock) like with [Vanderbilt QB Diego] Pavia.” (link)
