The Wall Street Journal’s Josh Dawsey, Rachel Bachman & Laine Higgins report the Trump administration “is considering an executive order that could increase scrutiny of the explosion in payments to college athletes since 2021.” The report follows a meeting President Trump had on Thursday in Alabama that included former Alabama FB HC Nick Saban: More from the WSJ trio: “Trump said he agreed with Saban and would look at crafting an executive order, people familiar with the meeting said. Trump told aides to begin studying what an order could say, the people said. Saban didn’t propose ending NIL but ‘reforming’ it, according to a person with direct knowledge of the meeting. He described how it was causing an uneven playing field, the people said, with an arms race among powerhouse schools.” (link)

Former Michigan State AD Alan Haller released a statement in regard to his exit, which includes: “Throughout my career, I have consistently spoken up when I believed something was not right—always guided by a commitment to protect students and uphold the best interests of the University. At times, those decisions have not aligned with individuals in positions of significant influence. [...] I am deeply grateful to my colleagues who stood alongside me. Together, we navigated some of the most difficult challenges in our history and celebrated some of our most meaningful victories. Leading Spartan Athletics through both has been a highlight of my professional life. My parents taught me that our actions should always be motivated by love. Serving this University and this community has been, for me, an act of love. I remain a proud Spartan.” (link)

On3’s Andy Staples wonders if North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham would be interested in the big chair opening at Michigan State: “Bubba Cunningham has worked closely with (Michigan State President) Kevin M. Guskiewicz. Bubba Cunningham is from Flint, Michigan originally.” Staples goes on to recount recent developments in Chapel Hill, primarily surrounding the hire & early tenure of new Football HC Bill Belichick: “If you’re Bubba Cunningham and Michigan State comes calling, I think you’re on the first thing smoking. [...] He’s been at North Carolina quite a while, but he almost took the job at Florida back in 2016 when Scott Stricklin got it. He was very close to taking the job at Florida then. So, it’s the first time this has been a thing. If I were him, I would want out of there.” (link)

Interestingly, ESPN Honolulu reports former Hawaii AD Craig Angelos has reapplied for the open AD chair with the Rainbows. (link)

The San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner is the latest to breakdown the AD search at Stanford: “Stanford has plenty to sell, but no candidate worth a dime will take the job if he/she doesn’t have oversight of the football program. Currently, that’s (Football General Manager Andrew) Luck’s purview. Exactly how the chain-of-command would work is an issue (Jonathan) Levin, the president, must resolve. Multiple sources have said Luck would be willing to tweak the reporting lines, assuming he trusts the next AD. The Cardinal could hire an alumnus or former athletic department employee. But initially, the search must cast the widest possible net. A swing-and-miss…could have dire consequences. [...] The search committee features a wide range of influential Stanford voices, including former women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer and university trustee Amy Brooks, an NBA executive who played for VanDerveer. There are two faculty members on the committee, along with a university official and current athlete (gymnast Asher Hong). What the committee doesn’t have is anyone connected directly to the football program, which is the most Stanford move ever and reflective of the misguided approach that created the current state of affairs. Best we can tell, the committee members most likely to support football are former provost Condoleezza Rice and Jesse Rogers, a major donor.” (link)

St. John’s has received the largest gift in university history as Board of Trustee Chair William J. Janetschek has committed $32.5M to the institution with $25M earmarked for a new Basketball practice facility. Of particular note: “Construction of the basketball facility is scheduled to begin in the coming months, with an anticipated completion date in 2027.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit with a long read on the groundswell of submissions to U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken pushing back on roster limits connected to the House settlement. MoloLamken’s Steve Molo: “We had people reaching out to us about roster limits, saying, ‘You ought to do something.’ And [class counsel] said, ‘Yeah, we got it.’ And, you know, they didn’t get it.” However, class counsel Steve Berman responds: “I think this was raised either as a side point for most people or wasn’t really the focus for most people, until the judge started picking up on it. I’m not saying that it’s not a good, valid concern, but I don’t think it was what the objectors were really focusing on, until they began to see the judge was going to overrule all the other objections.” Tons more on the individual stories of student-athletes who pushed ahead, including Colorado walk-on Football student-athlete Camden Dempsey: “We got to get some of these attorneys on the field sometime. so they learn you don’t have it in the bag until the clock says zero.” (link)

Athletics Admin’s KC Smurthwaite continues with contributions for HERO Sports on the future of Sacramento State’s conference affiliation: “After follow-up conversations through my daily contract and consulting work, it’s now confirmed: Sacramento State Athletics will need a new conference home for its non-football sports starting in 2026 when the Hornets go on their football independent adventure. [...] So, where do the other Hornet teams land? Right now, the frontrunner seems to be the Big West Conference, with the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) buzzing just behind for them. [...] And what about the Big Sky? Will they expand? Short answer: no.” (link)

Ohio State Athletics and the Varsity O Alumni Society are partnering together on a plan “to unite all generations of Ohio State student-athletes through impactful programs, leadership opportunities, and enhanced support for the lifelong Buckeye community.” Included is the creation of a new Director of Varsity O/Consultant of Engagement and Alumni Relations position to help increase engagement, while creating a stronger sense of community and more direct communication with the Varsity O Board. AD Ross Bjork: “Added resources for Varsity O will offer more ways for alumni to get involved through networking events, mentorship programs, community outreach, or through exclusive member experiences. Most importantly, the new leadership framework empowers former student-athletes to take an active role in steering Varsity O toward its fullest potential.” (link)

D1.ticker Morning Edition - Friday, May 2, 2025

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) & former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban were part of a meeting with President Donald Trump yesterday to discuss college athletics. Tuberville: “The one thing we can do is we can make every state be on the same level [for NIL money]… Now, between that, we have to come up with some rules for transfer portals and possible contracts for players, all the things that make college football the greatest sport ever. We do not want to turn into minor league sports. We can do things, we just gotta get it passed. [...] I think we can get it on the floor, the problem is getting it past a Democrat group that really wants nothing to do with making this country better. They don't care about college sports or education, they worry about the power that they control in this country. It's a hard way to go, but if anybody can get it done, it's President Trump, and hopefully we can have some discussion to get on the right track toward helping the NIL and college sports. [...] Sooner or later, it'll affect the fans that pay that ticket not knowing who the players are with no loyalty. There's no carryover or loyalty to schools that these fans love to support.” (link)

Tennessee Tech will work with Collegiate Sports Associates on its AD search, per CollegeAD. (link)

The Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari looks ahead for the next Michigan State AD: “Haller’s successor will also need to navigate with the unstable situation he and his colleagues around the country are grappling with, along with the potential additions of revenue streams the school has eschewed – selling corporate naming rights to Spartan Stadium and Breslin Center, among other venues – as well as the potentially costly renovations or replacement of the football stadium. Not to mention most likely the inevitable retirement of an iconic basketball coach in [Tom] Izzo, whenever that time comes.” (link)
|
The Lansing State Journal’s Graham Couch offers his view of the situation at Michigan State: “Haller cares deeply about the whole of MSU athletics. He refused to consider cutting sports, even staring down the barrel of a new financial model. He was offended by his swanky new office at 1855 Place, while the conditions for some athletes were embarrassing at Jenison Field House. MSU should want that instinct in its athletic director. The challenge is, you can only have so many priorities. And football is Priority Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 — players' salaries, stadium renovations, donor relations, fan experience, etc. — followed by men’s basketball and then hockey, women’s hoops and so on and so forth. So on and so forth can’t get in the way of football. [...] the timing of Haller's exit is likely so (President Kevin) Guskiewicz has time to find the person he wants and for the opening to fall during the spring and summer, when sitting athletic directors are most likely to make a move. It increases the candidate pool, unless he already has someone in mind. The next AD's top priorities: Making sure MSU football has the resources to contend in this new world and, down an ever-shortening road, to adequately replace Izzo.” (link)

Missouri AD Laird Veatch spoke to the media this week on a number of topics. On the pending House settlement: “We’ve made a lot of decisions up until this point and we’ll continue to adjust and work through that as it finalizes. … There are a lot of challenges, a lot of unknowns, but we get enough information where we’re able to make some key decisions. … There’s been a ton of planning going on. You’re definitely building the plan on the fly, so to speak.” On roster limits: “We’re now right at a point with the settlement where we’re waiting to hear what’s that final piece with the roster limits and how does this work out.” On the transfer portal: “That is one of the many things we need to work through, is our calendar and how we manage [the] transfer portal, not only for football, [but] for all of our sports that there needs to be adjustments that continue to take place after it is settled.” (link)

In response to the news that Texas will reportedly have a $35M-$40M football roster for the upcoming season, Tennessee Danny White remarks: “I think it’s hard to know what’s true. There’s so many numbers being thrown out. We are as competitive as anyone. I think in the NIL space, we came out the gate as a leader and we’re going to continue to have our foot on the gas, and knowing how our resources have grown – so in the last four years, we’ve grown from $140 million in annual revenue and will close the books this year closer to $280 (million) – we’ve almost doubled, and that’s this fan base. That’s why we’re here today. Whatever the rules of engagement are, if it’s about investing in our teams and making sure they have every competitive advantage possible, that’s what we’re going to do. We have a competitive administration. We have competitive coaches. We’re not generating all this revenue to put it in some coffers to make me feel good. We’re generating revenue to reinvest in our programs to win at a high level. … We have a lot to learn in the six months or so. If this settlement is approved, what are the rules of engagement? The clearinghouse, how does that work? We have a great market. We’re not in some small college town, so any rule engagement, I think we’re well set up. … If it’s about elite donors, we’ve got phenomenal elite donors. If it’s about the size of the fan base, we’ve led the country in combined attendance between football and men’s and women’s basketball the last two years. We have a sold-out football stadium with 23,000 on a waiting list. Men’s basketball, baseball, softball – sold out. There’s not another school in the country that can say that. We’re ready to compete. We can generate sponsorship for ourselves and for our student-athletes.” (link)

UAB has started adding sales tax to ticket purchases as part of its strategy to fund House settlement revenue sharing. Blazers AD Mark Ingram: “Other schools have added other fees to their tickets, but we felt that this would be the most practical.” Also from ABC 33/40’s Sumner Harrell: “UAB said it is also fundraising for the Bartow Arena Renovation project, which aims to modernize amenities and generate additional revenues. Ingram expressed gratitude for the ongoing efforts, noting, ‘This facility serves as the front porch of UAB and UAB Athletics, and apart from UAB Hospital, no other building on campus attracts as many visitors annually.’” (link)

From in front of the Law360 paywall: “A California federal judge granted preliminary approval Wednesday to a group of roughly 1,000 Division 1 volunteer baseball coaches for their settlement under which the NCAA would pay $49.5 million to resolve their proposed antitrust class action challenging a since-repealed ‘uniform wage fix’ bylaw.” (link)

One of the challenges with college ice hockey coaches pulling from the now-eligible pool of Canadian Hockey League players is that many of them are not academically eligible because they have not taken the required 16 NCAA-approved core classes. College Hockey Inc Executive Director Sean Hogan: “The current group of CHL players haven't thought about the NCAA. They made the decision to go to the CHL. They weren't trying to meet the requirements of the NCAA. We knew there would be a gap in this education, because they've never thought about it before. They've never had to think about it. … We've had conversations with the commissioners. They've said, 'We don't want to be known as a league that can't keep our players eligible.' They want to get it right. We've done education sessions for each league and each team's (academic advisor). With the new group coming in, we're less likely to have issues. They'll go in knowing they have two roads in front of them.” (link)

The NCAA Men's Wrestling Rules Committee at its meeting this week proposed modifications to the matside video review process for the 2025-26 season, recommending to allow third-party reviewers to be able to consult with the referee about pertinent information on a coach's video review challenge. Additionally, committee members recommended allowing coaches to retain their video challenge if there is obstruction in any part of the video sequence that is being challenged. Coaches also would retain their challenge if the action that is being questioned is not in the frame of the video. The committee also recommended making mouthguards required for competition, starting next season. Several other rules recommendations were proposed, as well. Next step is the June 10 discussion by the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel. (link)

The Louisiana House Appropriations Committee voted Monday to advance House Bill 639, which will increase the tax on sports gambling from 15% to 32.5%. The higher rate aligns with the tax the state places on video poker. In addition to generating $2M for addiction programs, the bill alters the tax revenue split and puts 25% into a Supporting Programs, Opportunities, Resources and Teams (SPORT) fund that would benefit student-athletes at the state’s DI public universities. Representative Neil Riser (R-Columbia), who sponsors the bill: “The need is so high. When you start talking about the SEC, talking about any level of athletics right now, it’s changed so dramatically. Even like ULM…just to be competitive [in recruiting], it takes facilities, when you’re dealing with [athletes] they require you to have all those things.” The fund is expected to receive more than $31M in dedicated funding annually, with each school receiving approximately $2.8M each year.
