The Athletic’s Chris Vannini & Ralph Russo dive into reports of the Trump administration exploring an executive order that could impact NIL & college athletics overall. From Vannini & Russo: “A congressional aide told The Athletic that an executive order might not stabilize the college sports system, which requires legal certainty and a limited safe harbor from litigation. Legal protections and the pre-empting of state NIL laws can only be addressed through congressional legislation.” Tulane sports law professor Gabe Feldman: “The challenge with any ruling or order is that there are multiple levels that would need to be addressed. This is not just an antitrust issue; it’s also a labor and employment issue. It’s also a Title IX issue. There’s also contract issues, right of publicity issues. There’s a lot in there.” (link)

Additional context from former Hawaii AD Craig Angelos on reports he’s reapplied for the job: “I wanted to apply and see if I can get my old job back, and see what happens. I love being here, loved working here. [...] Still living here in the same place. I’ve been on the island the whole time. This is really our home. We’ll be here until we find another opportunity, whether it be here or somewhere else.” (link)

More from the San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner with thoughts on the Stanford AD search: “At the risk of offending, our suggestion is the following: 1. Spend six or eight weeks identifying candidates, soliciting feedback from key constituents and clarifying Luck’s future role. 2. Accept the search committee’s suggestions with a smile and thank the members for their service. 3. Put (President Jonathan) Levin in a room with (Football General Manager Andrew) Luck, (former Secretary of State Condolezza) Rice and (major donor Jesse) Rogers and let the four of them figure out which candidate would give football the best chance to thrive. Then offer whatever it takes to cut the deal. [...] It needs an athletic director who understands the business of college sports, has deep industry connections, believes football sets the tone for everything else and is tough enough to take whatever criticism comes from prioritizing success on the field.” (link)

MLive’s Matt Wenzel on the Michigan State AD opening: “Michigan State wants an individual who can strengthen relationships with big-money donors. College athletics change seemingly by the hour and cash is needed to be a real player, especially in football and men’s basketball. [...] Acquiring players requires more money from donors, who are also being asked to shell out for facility upgrades, and the university needs to replace the $20 million or so annually that will go to the athletes in revenue sharing. The status quo – as much as that could exist right now – is a model that may be unsustainable. Athletic directors are stuck attempting to fuse a long-time funding model with something completely new.” (link)

Earlier in the week on the Carolina Insider podcast, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham voiced support for collective bargaining with student-athletes: “To me, I think we have to have a plan to get to collective bargaining. And I know that can be heresy for some. But I don't think you need to have to be an employee, and I don't think we should collectively bargain by school. It should either be by sport or by conference or by national governing body. But if I looked over the next 10 years of where I think we're going to be, we're going to be in some space like that. Because this is not sustainable. Although I don't think we're going to get enough traction in Congress right now. Right now the students are getting paid, the coaches are getting paid. Our facilities are full. Our media rights continue to increase. So if you ask the general public what is the problem, it's hard to define the problem. 'Well, we don't like it. We don't like the ability that these people get to move and do these other things.' So that's not compelling enough to me if I were in Congress to say, ‘OK, I'm going to change it and give you something that will protect what I'm not sure of.’” More. (link)

Cal AD Jim Knowlton says the new Fight for California – Cal Football Challenge, which was led by a $500K matching gift that included Football HC Justin Wilcox & Football GM Ron Rivera, led to two anonymous donors committing to another $500K matching gift. More from Knowlton on fundraising: “Our goal is to endow five sports by the end of this fiscal year – creating a lasting foundation of support through steady, reliable funding.” (link)

IU Indy AD Luke Bosso joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown for a wide-ranging conversation, including analysis of Bosso’s first year in the chair from the perspective of a problem-solving mindset. Bosso, who has a background in economic and workforce development having most recently served as the managing director of government advisory with Katz, Sapper & Miller, believes “The only difference between athletics and politics is the name. You’re trying to win over constituent groups, you know if you win or lose, and everybody thinks that they can do the job better than you.” Bosso provided 30 minutes, and no more, for candidates interested in the Jags men’s basketball opening last year, noting: “I told our staff that we’re going to do 30-minute conversations with them and if they can’t convince us in 30 minutes that they’re the right person then we’re not going to carry on with them. … I’m big on self reflection, so we asked every candidate ‘how could someone else beat you?’ and ‘what would the biggest detractors say about you?’ The way you answered those questions was really important. If you can’t be honest during the interview process, then we don't want you.” Lots more. (link)

Recruiting violations occurred in Cal’s football program when several staff members arranged and conducted a Zoom call with three former players - a then-NFL coach, current NFL player and former NFL player, all three of whom are considered boosters - and 44 prospects (and 80 of their family members) during the program’s Junior Day. Additional violations occurred when the former director of player development engaged impermissible recruiting contacts and communications with several prospects and their families. The football staff involved in the violation included Marshall Cherrington, director of player personnel; Andrew McGraw, football chief of staff; and Benji Palu, director of recruiting. The program has received one year of probation, a $25K fine, a two-week prohibition on official visits during the 2025 season, a three-week ban on recruiting communications during the current academic year, a reduction in the number of recruiting-person days for this year by seven, a two-week ban on unofficial visits , a 16-day ban for HC Justin Wilcox from any off-campus recruiting activities (served January and February 2025) and several other penalties. UT Martin had violations within its women’s soccer and softball programs when players who received midyear scholarship increases were required by coaches to return those funds or reimburse teammates for donations. Additional violations occurred in softball. In women’s soccer, the parties agreed that former women’s soccer HC Philip McNamara and former women’s soccer AC Leslie Gillies instructed every member of the team to donate $300 to the Captain’s Challenge, the fundraising effort for the school’s foundation. The penalties include: One year of probation; a fine of $25,000; a reduction of one women’s soccer scholarship or one roster spot for the 2025-26 academic year; a two-week ban on softball recruiting activities during the 2024-25 academic year; a two-year show-cause order for former Softball HC Brian Dunn, during which any employing member school must restrict him from all athletically related activities. There was also a one-year show-cause for both Gillies and Softball HC Chelsea Farmer. (link)

Coinciding with the launch of the Anti-Doping and Medication Control (ADMC) Program in 2023, Horseracing Integrity & Welfare Unit (HIWU) partnered with RealResponse to make misconduct reporting more accessible and scalable. For HIWU Director of Investigative Operations Shawn Loehr, having a system that supported two-way communication between his team and whistleblowers was critical. Loehr: “The ability for somebody to make a tip anonymously is great. But what’s unique is that we have the ability to communicate back and forth with that person to get more information. … Our ability to gather more information has led us to fruitful investigations that we may not have pursued otherwise. … We can see the peaks and valleys of the types of tips we’re getting (e.g., if there are a lot related to one racetrack, one trainer or one horse). It gives us the ability to pull data, determine our investigative strategy and be able to report out on what we’re finding.” At least two HIWU employees monitor the RealResponse-powered tip line daily (including weekends and holidays). With a centralized reporting platform, Loehr’s team has been able to respond to every single tip within 24 hours—regardless of when it comes through. More than 80% of the information HIWU receives through the platform offers value toward a new or existing investigation. More. (link)

Modern fans live on their mobile devices. While most athletic departments recognize this with an app presence, few have implemented the strategic frameworks necessary to capitalize on this direct channel to their most valuable stakeholders:
Engagement Impact: Highly engaged digital fans attend 3.6x more games per season (CollegeAD Fan Engagement Index, 2024).
Competitive Advantage: Programs with sophisticated mobile strategies can deepen fan relationships and, by extension, their loyalty and revenue potential.
Revenue Potential: Schools with dedicated mobile app strategies reported 14% higher merchandise sales compared to peers without strategic mobile initiatives (2023 NACDA/SBJ College Athletics Revenue Report).

The Wall Street Journal’s Josh Dawsey, Rachel Bachman & Laine Higgins report the Trump administration “is considering an executive order that could increase scrutiny of the explosion in payments to college athletes since 2021.” The report follows a meeting President Trump had on Thursday in Alabama that included former Alabama FB HC Nick Saban: More from the WSJ trio: “Trump said he agreed with Saban and would look at crafting an executive order, people familiar with the meeting said. Trump told aides to begin studying what an order could say, the people said. Saban didn’t propose ending NIL but ‘reforming’ it, according to a person with direct knowledge of the meeting. He described how it was causing an uneven playing field, the people said, with an arms race among powerhouse schools.” (link)

Former Michigan State AD Alan Haller released a statement in regard to his exit, which includes: “Throughout my career, I have consistently spoken up when I believed something was not right—always guided by a commitment to protect students and uphold the best interests of the University. At times, those decisions have not aligned with individuals in positions of significant influence. [...] I am deeply grateful to my colleagues who stood alongside me. Together, we navigated some of the most difficult challenges in our history and celebrated some of our most meaningful victories. Leading Spartan Athletics through both has been a highlight of my professional life. My parents taught me that our actions should always be motivated by love. Serving this University and this community has been, for me, an act of love. I remain a proud Spartan.” (link)

On3’s Andy Staples wonders if North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham would be interested in the big chair opening at Michigan State: “Bubba Cunningham has worked closely with (Michigan State President) Kevin M. Guskiewicz. Bubba Cunningham is from Flint, Michigan originally.” Staples goes on to recount recent developments in Chapel Hill, primarily surrounding the hire & early tenure of new Football HC Bill Belichick: “If you’re Bubba Cunningham and Michigan State comes calling, I think you’re on the first thing smoking. [...] He’s been at North Carolina quite a while, but he almost took the job at Florida back in 2016 when Scott Stricklin got it. He was very close to taking the job at Florida then. So, it’s not the first time this has been a thing. If I were him, I would want out of there.” (link)

The San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner is the latest to breakdown the AD search at Stanford: “Stanford has plenty to sell, but no candidate worth a dime will take the job if he/she doesn’t have oversight of the football program. Currently, that’s (Football General Manager Andrew) Luck’s purview. Exactly how the chain-of-command would work is an issue (Jonathan) Levin, the president, must resolve. Multiple sources have said Luck would be willing to tweak the reporting lines, assuming he trusts the next AD. The Cardinal could hire an alumnus or former athletic department employee. But initially, the search must cast the widest possible net. A swing-and-miss…could have dire consequences. [...] The search committee features a wide range of influential Stanford voices, including former women’s basketball coach Tara VanDerveer and university trustee Amy Brooks, an NBA executive who played for VanDerveer. There are two faculty members on the committee, along with a university official and current athlete (gymnast Asher Hong). What the committee doesn’t have is anyone connected directly to the football program, which is the most Stanford move ever and reflective of the misguided approach that created the current state of affairs. Best we can tell, the committee members most likely to support football are former provost Condoleezza Rice and Jesse Rogers, a major donor.” (link)

St. John’s has received the largest gift in university history as Board of Trustee Chair William J. Janetschek has committed $32.5M to the institution with $25M earmarked for a new Basketball practice facility. Sportico’s Daniel Libit with a long read on the groundswell of submissions to U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken pushing back on roster limits connected to the House settlement. MoloLamken’s Steve Molo: “We had people reaching out to us about roster limits, saying, ‘You ought to do something.’ And [class counsel] said, ‘Yeah, we got it.’ And, you know, they didn’t get it.” However, class counsel Steve Berman responds: “I think this was raised either as a side point for most people or wasn’t really the focus for most people, until the judge started picking up on it. I’m not saying that it’s not a good, valid concern, but I don’t think it was what the objectors were really focusing on, until they began to see the judge was going to overrule all the other objections.” Tons more on the individual stories of student-athletes who pushed ahead, including Colorado walk-on Football student-athlete Camden Dempsey: “We got to get some of these attorneys on the field sometime. so they learn you don’t have it in the bag until the clock says zero.” (link)

Athletics Admin’s KC Smurthwaite continues with contributions for HERO Sports on the future of Sacramento State’s conference affiliation: “After follow-up conversations through my daily contract and consulting work, it’s now confirmed: Sacramento State Athletics will need a new conference home for its non-football sports starting in 2026 when the Hornets go on their football independent adventure. [...] So, where do the other Hornet teams land? Right now, the frontrunner seems to be the Big West Conference, with the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) buzzing just behind for them. [...] And what about the Big Sky? Will they expand? Short answer: no.” (link)

Ohio State Athletics and the Varsity O Alumni Society are partnering together on a plan “to unite all generations of Ohio State student-athletes through impactful programs, leadership opportunities, and enhanced support for the lifelong Buckeye community.” Included is the creation of a new Director of Varsity O/Consultant of Engagement and Alumni Relations position to help increase engagement, while creating a stronger sense of community and more direct communication with the Varsity O Board. AD Ross Bjork: “Added resources for Varsity O will offer more ways for alumni to get involved through networking events, mentorship programs, community outreach, or through exclusive member experiences. Most importantly, the new leadership framework empowers former student-athletes to take an active role in steering Varsity O toward its fullest potential.” (link)
