The Missouri Valley Football Conference and Summit League have agreed to a joint management model that will see MVC Commissioner Jeff Jackson succeed MVFC Commissioner Patty Viverito at the end of this academic year, Summit League Commissioner Josh Fenton serve as Executive Advisor for the MVFC, and the league hire a new COO. North Dakota President/MVFC President's Chair Andy Armacost: “This restructuring ensures the continued success and stability of the MVFC. By streamlining our management and enhancing collaboration among member institutions across three conferences – the Summit League, the Missouri Valley Conference, and the Horizon League – we are positioning ourselves for sustained growth and continued national prominence.” (link)

Attorneys at Hagens Berman, who are representing a class of hundreds of thousands of current and former college athletes in the House settlement, assert that “talk of an executive order and eleventh-hour self-importance from University of Alabama’s ex-football coach, Nick Saban, is unmerited and unhelpful.” Co-Founder/Managing Partner Steve Berman: “While he was a coach, Saban initially opposed NIL payments to athletes, pushing to add restrictions and red-tape through national legislation to add ‘some sort of control.’ During his time scrutinizing the athlete pay structure, he made tens of millions of dollars and was previously the highest-paid coach in college football.” Berman adds that “Coach Saban and Trump’s eleventh-hour talks of executive orders and other meddling are just more unneeded self-involvement. College athletes are spearheading historic changes and benefitting massively from NIL deals. They don’t need this unmerited interference from a coach only seeking to protect the system that made him tens of millions.” (link)

NJ.com’s Brian Fonseca, Steve Politi and Patrick Lanni discuss the Rutgers AD search and note the university expects to have a new president by commencement (on May 18) and “perhaps a new AD by the start of football season, which would make sense.” In addition to a skilled fundraiser, the group believes the next AD would ideally have the ability to put Rutgers in a more prominent position in the Big Ten, be more proactive when addressing changes in the industry, ensure there are no scandals, develop a “realistic facilities plan,” and “fix” both basketball programs. As far as candidates go, the group cites a professional team GM or front office executive – preferably in the NYC market – as someone who could have the requisite experience needed to be a modern AD. Such a scenario, they add, would necessitate retaining some senior leaders, such as Interim AD Ryan Pisarri, to effectively run daily operations. (link)

Prominent Michigan State donor Jim Heos weighs in on MSU’s decision to part ways with AD Alan Haller and says he’s “not surprised given the trajectory of the level of giving to the athletic department. All you’ve got to do is look at what's going on with the players that are coming via the transfer portal. It just seems like we can’t compete because we don’t have enough money. And I like Alan Haller. I think we need someone who will go out and pound the bushes and get money into the university. When I see how much other universities are paying athletes, I don’t like it, but that’s the only way you’re going to compete in today’s world.” As such, Heos believes the Spartans must hire a successful fundraiser to replace Haller. “I just don’t like the course that we’re taking, I don’t think it’s all Alan Haller’s fault, but I have faith in President [Kevin] Guskiewicz that he and his staff will make the right choice.” Heos is “very concerned” about MSU’s ability to compete with the biggest football programs with NIL and says: “I see us right now being just to the level of being a moderate program, and that’s not what we want. And we’re not far from slipping into the lower tier.” (link)

Also notably from East Lansing, Michigan State Football HC Jonathan Smith’s buyout has been cut in half due to the dismissal of Spartans AD Alan Haller. The Detroit Free Press’ Chris Solari points out that if Smith leaves for another school between now and December 1, he would owe MSU $3M. Also: “The adjusted terms to Smith’s deal with the provision kicking in means should he leave for another job, he would owe MSU $2M between Dec. 2 and Dec. 1, 2026; it drops to $1.5M the following year, $1M in Year 5 and $500K in Year 6. Smith would not be required to pay the university if he were to leave after Dec. 2, 2029, without an extension or renegotiated contract with a new athletic director.” (link)

Michigan is expected to suspend Football HC Sherrone Moore for two games as a penalty for allegedly deleting text messages he exchanged with former staffer Connor Stalions. According to The Athletic’s Austin Meek, Moore will coach the Wolverines’ first two games, including a Week 2 matchup against Oklahoma, before missing the next two games against Central Michigan and Nebraska. U-M has yet to confirm the suspension, with Assoc. AD for Public and Media Relations David Ablauf saying: “As you know, we will not comment on an active NCAA case.” (link)

Syracuse Football HC Fran Brown has become the first NCAA coach to sign with NIL agency Network, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who notes Network “primarily works with high school and college athletes, including Florida quarterback DJ Lagway, but has decided to foray into the world of college coaching.” Network Chief Strategy Officer Doug Scott: “When we started Network, we weren’t pretending to, nor considering to, get into the coaching world. It really was the energy and essence of who Fran was, to where we decided that, yes, this is somebody that we really want to see be successful. And we think there’s a little bit of a void in the marketplace right now.” Brown says he has several ideas for reforming college football rules, including offering just one transfer portal in December and mandating that players put between 40% and 60% of their NIL earnings in savings. He has also suggested the idea of completing school in three years and tells Christovich: “I think that you should do three years at a school. In three years you should be able to get your degree or be very close to that being done. In three years you have an opportunity of going to the National Football League.” Christovich adds: “Scott said Brown is considering signing endorsement deals and creating his own product lines, as well as hosting events like the Syracuse golf tournament he’s slated to appear at in June. Brown says he also hopes to continue an emphasis on community service.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy profiles Pathway Sports and Entertainment, and Founder Casey Schwab explains why the new venture is focused on group licensing for video games: “There’s a lot of uncertainty [in the college space] around revenue sharing, the [House] settlement, employment status — or not employment status — collective bargaining. But there’s not a lot of uncertainty around the commercial opportunities for college football players when it comes to video games.” Portnoy notes that Pathway has so far “signed more than 2,700 players across the Power 4, just under half the total scholarship athletes at that level. That includes inking deals with at least 75% of the rosters at Alabama, Baylor, Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Oregon, Nebraska, Wisconsin, SMU, Washington, Texas Tech and South Carolina, among others.” Pathway is backed financially by Winners Alliance, whose president, Eric Winston, tells Portnoy: “It’s incumbent on us to perform. We’re not telling college players, ‘Hey, trust us,’ or ‘There’s a hope and a prayer and we’ll see what we can do.’ We’re out laying capital to these players so that they’re no worse off than the baseline — and we still believe that we can do multiples of that baseline better over time.” As far as how much money Winners Alliance is investing, Winston declined to give specifics, but Portnoy notes that “it‘s understood enough capital has been poured in to pay players for multiple years.” Lots more, including Schwab’s explanation of the right of first refusal in contracts with players. The Baltimore Sun’s Mathew Schumer reports U.S. District Judge Brendan A. Hurson last week denied UMBC’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit brought against the university by former AD Brian Barrio on the grounds of retaliation & libel following Barrio’s dismissal last year. In question is a statement released by the university attributed to President Valerie Sheares Ashby in connection to the restructuring of the athletic department following Title IX misconduct by former Swim coach Chad Cradock. Hurson: “It is highly unlikely that Sheares Ashby believed the statements to be true on the day they were uttered, but somehow came to agree, just one day later, that they were false.” (link)

Missouri Men’s Basketball HC Dennis Gates on the potential addition of a General Manager for his program: “I’ve been president of basketball operations. I’ve been the GM. I’ve been the head coach. I’ve held those titles. I just know there’s only 24 hours in a day. There’s a lot of needs and growth that our game is taking on in a transformational way because NIL is growing. The need to have relationships with agents, consistently, is growing — in addition to high school (recruiting), in addition to being ahead in the transfer portal, trying to figure out who’s out there. Agents know who’s out there because they’re their clients. That’s a big part of it.” (link)

More from Iowa Football HC Kirk Ferentz: “The 105 thing is, I think, maybe the most significant change [of] anything that has been discussed. I think it’s just really, not rooted [in] much good reason, from my vantage point. … In the NFL, it’s a little different animal. You can be sitting there in October and you have three players get injured. You’ve got to put them on injured reserve. You go out and sign three guys or elevate three guys off your practice squad. It’s a fluid process where you’re never dropping down below. … And then, college situations. If you look at a place like ours – put it in NFL terms. In the NFL, you’ve got 53 guys on your roster. We may have 35 here that are NFL-ready, and then we’ve got 30-some guys on our practice squad instead of wherever the NFL’s at now. … We’re trying to develop our guys as they go through their careers. Our guys don’t walk in here ready made. To me, this limitation puts us at a little bit of a disadvantage.” (link)

He shares his strategy and research he did to win the job in his current role and what two things are vitally important to know now in this time in college athletics. North Carolina Men’s Basketball student-athlete Zayden High was suspended last semester from the university after UNC found he violated the campus policy on sexual exploitation. High filmed another student without the student’s consent during a sexual encounter between them last year. The student is now concerned the school did not ensure that High adequately followed the sanctions imposed upon him. From the News & Observer: “Per the terms of the sanctions issued to High by the EOC office for his misconduct, he is barred from representing the university in any way, including by participating in athletics, while on probation. But during the probationary period, High has retained several perks that accompany being an athlete at the university, according to university correspondence about the issue reviewed by The N&O. That includes access to athletic facilities, where High has been allowed to practice on his own and receive athlete meals and other services. High was also around several members of the basketball team on the court of the Dean E. Smith Center on at least one occasion while he was on probation, according to video evidence reviewed by The N&O.” More. (link)
