On3’s Pete Nakos reports that “three names are emerging as candidates to know in the Michigan State search.” They are North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, MSU Senior Advisor to the President Harold Balk and Charitable Gift America Founder Tom Dieters. Nakos on the latter two: “A longtime friend and close advisor of [Michigan State President Kevin] Guskiewicz’s, Balk left his job as the chief development officer at Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott last year to take his role at Michigan State. His job with the Spartans now focuses on identifying new funding sources and developing public-private partnerships. If Guskiewicz wants a trusted advisor as his athletic director, Balk would fit. Dieters is a Michigan State alum and has become a pivotal piece of the NIL scene in East Lansing. Sources have told On3 that multiple board members have pushed the booster to apply for the job, and he’s expected to. Dieters has proven to be a fundraiser in the Michigan State community, and has relationships with well-known donors Mat Ishbia, Steve St. Andre and Greg Williams.” (link)

Incoming Akron AD Andrew Goodrich has agreed to a five-year deal through June 2030, according to CollegeAD, which reports the agreement includes a base salary of $300K. Goodrich can also earn up to $100K in incentive compensation. In addition to several on-field bonuses, CollegeAD notes: “Should net revenue from ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, private donations, etc., increase between 10% and 20% during Goodrich's term, he will receive $5K. If the increase exceeds 20%, he will receive $10K.” Additionally, Akron will schedule a football game against Gardner-Webb in exchange for the Runnin’ Bulldogs waiving $60K of Goodrich's buyout fee. Otherwise, Akron will pay the full $60K. If Akron terminates the contract without cause, it will pay Goodrich 100% of his base salary for the remainder of the contract term. If Goodrich terminates the contract or accepts another job in athletics, he will pay the university the following: termination before May 2026: 166% of annual compensation; before May 2027: 133% of annual compensation; before May 2028: 100% of annual compensation; before May 2029: 67% of annual compensation; before May 2030: 33% of annual compensation. If President Robert Nemer is no longer serving Akron at the time of termination, the buyout is reduced by 25%. (link)

The Big Ten reported just over $928M in total revenue and distributed about $63.2M to each of its 12 longest-standing schools during FY24, according to USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz, who notes those figures “represent a 5.5% increase in total revenue and a 4.5% increase in per-school payouts compared to those for fiscal 2023 due to the beginning of new television agreements. However, the new records, along with documents and data released by three Big Ten member schools in recent years, strongly indicate that the conference’s revenue for its ongoing 2025 fiscal year will increase to somewhere between $1.2B and $1.4B, with the new TV deals taking full effect and the additions of UCLA, [USC], Oregon and Washington increasing its membership to 18 schools.” The conference’s per-school distributions for FY25, Berkowitz adds, “seem likely to be around $75M for all except Oregon and Washington, whose shares are being phased in over seven years. All of this keeps – and, at least for now, stands to continue keeping – the Big Ten ahead of the now-16-school [SEC] in terms of total revenue and per-school payouts. The SEC released tax records in February that showed $840M in total revenue and average per-school distributions of about $52.5M to the 14 schools other than newcomers Oklahoma and Texas. The SEC also is on a path toward at least $1B in total revenue for its 2024-25 fiscal year.” (link)
|
Additionally, Berkowitz reports former Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren received a $5.75M bonus during the 2023 calendar year, bringing his total compensation to over $6.8M. Former Commissioner Jim Delany, who became eligible for over $20M in bonus payments in July 2015, “was credited with a net total of nearly $3.05M that represented the sixth year’s worth of these payments that the conference says he will be receiving over a 10-year span, ending in 2027. So far Delany has received about $18M worth of these payments.” Finally, current Commissioner Tony Petitti was credited with total compensation of $2.65M, and Berkowitz notes the compensation included a $500K bonus and pro-rated base pay that, if annualized, was about $3.2M. Miami (FL) AD Dan Radakovich weighs in on the football scheduling agreement between Notre Dame and Clemson, telling ESPN’s David Hale he believes the ACC needs to explore ways to pit its best teams against each other and maximize non-conference opportunities. Doing so, Radakovich notes, will create top-tier TV inventory in an increasingly competitive environment as the league works to ensure multiple College Football Playoff bids. "The brands need to play each other more. That's what has to happen. Do we divide into two divisions? Who gets to play Notre Dame? How are we doing those kinds of things? And if the SEC goes to nine (conference games) we might have to go to nine as well with a bifurcated brands and non-brands [divide]." Florida State AD Michael Alford adds: "Today in college football, more than ever, it's important for strong brands to play strong brands. That helps our brand, as well as all of us within the conference. We've been consistent in that belief for a while now as you can see in our nonconference scheduling philosophy. It's important for our conference and our media partners." (link)

The FCS Oversight Committee is recommending legislation to increase the maximum number of games that can be played, standardize the first contest date and eliminate first contest date exceptions, beginning with the 2026 season. According to the recommendation, FCS teams could play 12 regular-season contests each year. Current legislation permits 12 regular-season contests in years when there are 14 Saturdays from the first permissible playing date through the last playing date in November (2024, 2025). In all other years, only 11 regular-season contests are permitted. Additionally, the proposal would standardize the start date of the FCS season as the Thursday 13 weeks before the FCS championship bracket is released, which is the Saturday before Thanksgiving. If the proposed change is adopted, FCS teams could begin competing on Thursday, August 27, 2026. As part of standardizing the start date for all FCS programs, the proposal eliminates first contest date exceptions in the FCS. Currently, those exceptions allow contests that meet legislated criteria to take place as early as the Saturday before the Thursday prior to Labor Day (which would be August 29 in 2026). (link)

College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon shares the recap from the American Hockey Coaches Association convention, which wrapped up on Tuesday. First, McMahon notes the Pairwise rankings will likely be replaced by the NCAA Percentage Index (NPI). The NPI is already used in women's hockey as part of the Pairwise formula (women’s ice uses NPI instead of RPI in its Pairwise), but according to several coaches in Florida, the “belief is that the sport will move solely to the NPI, eliminating the rest of the Pairwise components, as a way to seed and select teams. Next, McMahon reports that NCAA President Charlie Baker told the group the NCAA will release a new governing structure in July that will give individual sports more say over their governance. According to McMahon, it will “essentially” give the “NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Committee (or a newly formed committee for governance) more leeway in managing the sport's championships and policies.” Additionally, while some coaches worried the NCAA would standardize enrollment across all sports and put hockey’s deferred enrollment rule in jeopardy, Baker “seemed supportive of it in his meeting with coaches, given hockey's unique landscape with junior hockey.” Finally, Denver HC David Carle made a pitch to Baker about home-site regionals. Baker seemed supportive of the idea and wondered why there was opposition. McMahon points out that Hockey East commissioner Steve Metcalf delivered a counterargument to Carle's pitch. Full rundown. Fordham AD Charles Guthrie covers several topics in a Q&A with the Maroon Club, including the roster limits associated with the House settlement. Guthrie notes the impact on the Rams will be minimal in most sports but notes that “baseball will be the one sport that we will probably have some challenges because they carried around 40 players and you need to get down to 34. … If you look at a program like Michigan, they stand to lose anywhere up to 200 athletes with the new, impending roster cuts with the House settlement, just to give you an example. That’s what I heard from some sources. But I feel like we're in good shape.” Guthrie notes that Atlantic 10 presidents voted to provide a minimum of $500K in “enhanced benefits” for men’s basketball and says the Rams will also do so for women’s basketball. “And next year that floor goes up to $1M just to be a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference. So, we’re participating, we’re dabbling, it’s a year-to-year decision, but we’re excited about where this is going to lead our program.” Full Q&A. (link)

The national four-year Academic Progress Rate for DI teams remained steady at 984 for a fourth consecutive year while national sport averages either increased or also held steady. Men's basketball remained at 968, with baseball (979), football (964) and women's basketball (982) all increasing by 1 point from last year's reported APR scores. The NCAA also reports that “many former student-athletes are returning to the classroom to complete their degrees after exhausting their athletics eligibility. In the past 21 years of the Academic Performance Program, nearly 22K student-athletes have gone back to school to earn their degrees and APR points for their former team. For football (6,428), baseball (2,416), and men's (1,657) and women's basketball (761), more than 11,000 former student-athletes have returned to college and earned degrees. These student-athletes are typically not counted in the federal graduation rate or Graduation Success Rate calculations.” (link); Full report, including trends in APR, eligibility, retention and more. SLAM Collaborative won an RFP process to design Connecticut’s $100M Gampel Pavilion renovation. SBJ’s Bret McCormick: “Nations Group was selected by UConn in March to be the owners’ rep on the project, which will focus on enhancing fans’ food and beverage experience with new grab-and-go markets and more outlets, creating new premium seating options (such as loge boxes and new clubs), enhancing locker rooms, adding an athletes’ dining area and addressing issues with the interior dome roof. The goal is to have the renovation design done in time to bid out the construction work by November and then commence construction once the 2025-26 basketball seasons conclude. The school is planning for the renovation to be done before the 2027-28 season.” (link)

Clemson claims its revenue-sharing contracts with student-athletes are “proprietary” and not subject to public record. The Post and Courier’s Jon Blau: “Release of that information, Clemson's legal counsel said, would put the university at a ‘competitive disadvantage.’ Even a ‘boilerplate’ copy of Clemson's revenue-sharing contract, unsigned and without contract terms, is ‘work product of legal counsel’ and confidential. The university's ‘trade secret’ argument was a shift from its first response to The Post and Courier's request for revenue-sharing deals in January. Clemson initially said the contracts were educational records exempt under [FERPA].” South Carolina Press Association attorney Jay Bender disagrees, telling Blau: "All of the claimed exemptions, in my view, are nonsense. I don't think there's anything educational about paying someone to play football. They're making this up as they go along." Blau goes on to note that “South Carolina law says athletes’ NIL deals with collectives and other companies, which pass through the university for a compliance review, aren’t disclosable unless the school is ‘a party’ in the contract. Clemson is a party to its revenue-sharing agreements, but it’s shielding those with arguments around educational records and trade secrets. … The Post and Courier also requested any planning documents related to revenue sharing. … The university said it doesn't have ‘final’ planning documents because the NCAA's settlement hasn't been approved. But even when it is, the university regards those documents as ‘proprietary.’” (link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello explains there was some “confusion” regarding House (settlement) plaintiffs’ attorney Steve Berman’s remarks to The AP yesterday about who will be grandfathered in with the new roster limits. Berman explains the proposal in question “covers all who are designated student athletes – anyone who lost a roster spot, not just objectors. The chart is just to show how it works.” Marcello adds: “House v. NCAA plaintiffs have requested grandfather protection for all athletes who lost spots because of roster limits. As of 3 p.m. ET, plaintiffs still await a final agreement from the NCAA and the power conferences (defendants).” Meanwhile, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “conference officials are sharing with members and gaining approval of a revision to House roster limits to grant schools the option to grandfather athletes. In a new concept, it also permits athletes, who leave/not retained by current school, to keep [grandfather] status at a new school.” (link, link, link)

New Haven (DII) will jump up to DI and join the NEC starting July 1. The Chargers are set to become full DI members by 2028-29. Commissioner Noreen Morris: “Making the move to Division I is a bold step, and we're honored that New Haven chose to take that step with us. From the start, it was clear that they share our values – putting academics, competitive excellence and the student-athlete experience at the forefront.” (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark has agreed to a three-year extension through 2030. Yormark: "We have made great progress over the last three years, and our best days are ahead. I am thrilled to continue to work alongside our member schools as we grow and strengthen the Big 12 into a Conference that is innovative and prepared for what the future may hold." (link); The San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner points out that the timing of this extension “allows Yormark to negotiate the Big 12's next media contract. Expires in summer of 2031, which means Ts likely crossed in spring of 2030.” (link)

Speaking of media deals, in a hearing about professional sports broadcasting deals in Congress this morning, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) suggested he was open to giving college sports an antitrust exemption similar to that which allows leagues like the NFL to negotiate their TV deals as one large group. Cruz: “The SBA (Sports Broadcasting Act) was intended to ensure that the needs of all sports fans were being met. I think it’s important to regularly revisit and consider whether our laws, like the Sports Broadcasting Act, are fulfilling their intended goals. And if the leagues can show how the SBA continues to benefit fans today, it may be worth exploring whether to give a similar exemption to college sports whose broadcasting rights have no antitrust protection. One growing concern is that the NFL has used its special exemption in the SBA to the frustration of college and high school football schedulers. For example, the SBA explicitly excludes antitrust protection for the NFL if broadcasting a game on a Friday night or a Saturday between mid-September to mid-December. That’s to protect the interests of high school and college football, and ultimately, their fans who are no doubt also followers of the NFL. The NFL has tiptoed up to this rule, now putting a game on streaming on Black Friday afternoon, which used to be a slot reserved for prominent college football rivalries, including in some years, Texas and Texas A&M. There are millions of sports fans who like being able to follow high school, college, and professional football without having to choose amongst them. And it’s partly why Congress wrote the SBA in the manner it did.” (link, link – full remarks from Cruz)

Arizona State AD Graham Rossini late last month remarked that the Sun Devils were close to finalizing the percentage breakdown for each sport in the new revenue-sharing agreement and noted: “We want to resource all of our programs to win at a high level. You’re seeing a lot of schools that are picking a couple of sports they’re adding scholarships to, sometimes at the expense of other sports. We want to invest heavily in football and basketball. We need to do that to be successful, but we want all 26 to have a chance to be successful at a high level. … You’ve already seen UTEP discontinue women’s tennis a couple of weeks ago, Cal Poly’s eliminated swimming. Sadly, I think you’re going to see more of that happen at Olympic sports.” Rossini went on to point out that “we’re adding 225 scholarships. We’re trying to go the opposite direction. It probably hasn’t been since after World War II, where the land-grant schools made this investment into collegiate athletics, that there’s been this kind of seismic shift in the landscape of college sports. We think this is another iteration. … We’re having a lot of success in our Olympic sports. This is a moment to resource, to get them ahead and stay ahead. We want to be prepared to do that. We had a heartbreaker earlier. Beach volleyball took TCU to a fifth set, an overtime heartbreaker for what would have been our fifth Big 12 championship. It’s important that beach volleyball is resourced and is successful at ASU. This is a sport that’s gaining Olympic momentum.” (link)

Clemson and Notre Dame are set to announce a 12-year football scheduling agreement through 2038, according to ESPN’s David Hale, who observes that the agreement “offers some scheduling flexibility and insurance for both schools as the SEC continues to discuss moving to a nine-game conference slate. The Tigers play South Carolina annually in a rivalry game, but they also have future home-and-home series scheduled against LSU (2025 and 2026), Georgia (2029, 2030, 2032 and 2033), and Oklahoma (2035 and 2036). A nine-game SEC slate could put some of those future matchups in jeopardy – though multiple sources told ESPN they do not see annual SEC-ACC rivalry games such as Clemson-South Carolina being canceled – but even if all currently scheduled games remain on the docket, these matchups figure to help with playoff résumés.” Hale also notes that the two teams were already scheduled to play in 2027, 2028, 2031, 2034 and 2037, and a “source confirmed the annual games will also count toward Notre Dame's required five games vs. ACC opponents.” Clemson AD Graham Neff adds: "This locks in a huge rivalry for us with a nonconference opponent that's going to be strong year in and year out. The association of national brands like Clemson and Notre Dame create a great fan experience, strong viewership and the value of that is obviously a fundamental component." (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman chronicles Iowa State’s journey from “running annual deficits” and enduring a 17-year bowl drought in 1995 to its strong positioning today. To get where they are today, Dochterman notes, the “Cyclones hired a change agent, organically built relationships throughout the state and worked diligently to field competitive programs in college sports’ ever-changing arms race.” Said change agent, Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard, took over in 2005 and catalogued what needed to change. He tells Dochterman: “This place was underfunded, so under-resourced, understaffed and (lacked) facilities. But I thought this place had good bones. Like the fans, they were loyal. They wanted to support; they just hadn’t been given something to capture their imagination.” One decision involved ending the annual golf outings coaches had with fans, which Pollard viewed as inefficient, and instead began a caravan approach whereby coaches and administrators spent two weeks on the road. Pollard: “We described it as this: Let’s plant the seeds and fertilize it and water them and grow our own fans. In theory, Iowa State probably lost two generations of fans when they lost, what, 15 games in a row to Iowa (from 1983 to 1997)? During that time, it probably wasn’t really fun to be in the stadium. Students weren’t coming to the games. Then they graduate, and they’re not programmed to come to games. They go out into the workforce, they have children, they’re not coming to the games. We had to get those people back.” Lots more. (link)

ECU AD Jon Gilbert, in a letter to fans, explains that there’s not a “one-size-fits-all” model for revenue-sharing, adding: “We understand where we fit, what we can do with the continued support of campus, and how to build a plan that works for us. We're also collaborating with an external consultant with deep expertise in collegiate athletics to ensure our model is efficient and aligned with today's landscape. Make no mistake – ECU will need to be aggressive in our approach. When you look at the realities of the House settlement, you are dealing with new, unbudgeted expenses. This means we must make thoughtful and sometimes difficult decisions. We must prioritize as we plan for a sustainable path forward.” Gilbert goes on to explain that “our revenue-share model will correlate to the talent on our respective rosters. Football is going to be a central part of our revenue-sharing strategy. We know how vital a strong football program is to the health of our department and this community. … As part of the settlement, new roster caps will be instituted, while increasing scholarship limits across sports. We anticipate offering additional scholarships for select sports, and we'll share those details as plans are finalized.” Full letter. (link)
