ESPN’s Pete Thamel from last night: “With the Power 4 commissioners meeting today in New York, sources said there's continued focus on a 16-team CFP starting in 2026. ‘I would say that 16 is becoming more preferred,’ said an industry source. ‘It seems like 16 may be the preferred number, but there’s no format decision.’” (link)

Auburn AD John Cohen on the reportedly planned presidential commission on college athletics: “We need the help of the federal government in one way or another. We need help because the structure of leadership is always going to be in peril as long as they are going to have to spend time in court. If you can’t make decisions without ultimately appearing in court, you can’t lead. And we desperately need that type of leadership, and that’s why I think eventually this has to happen and I think so many of our representatives in Washington are fully aware of this, and I’m excited about what this can become.” Cohen, who in October hired former Georgia Southern AD Jared Benko as Executive Deputy AD to help navigate the waters ahead, believes Benko has a “brilliant sense” of business, accounting and budgets, but “Even the people at the highest, we don’t know what we don’t know. I have a lot of faith in the people who are doing this, but we have asked them to do almost the impossible, and it’s gonna be a little bumpy at the beginning.” (link)

The San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner wonders whether President Donald Trump’s college sports commission will be helpful or only add to the disorder, and one high-ranking power conference executive tells him: “If [Trump’s commission] can expedite congressional assistance and create pathways for getting big, tangible things done – instead of just calling out problems we already know exist and dusting off their hands – I’m all for it. I know people criticize the idea of another commission. But if the President of the United States is committed to solving the problems that can be solved in our industry, I’ll take that over apathy any day.” Another source tells him: “I’m always a bit reluctant to have the federal government poking around in my business, invited or uninvited. However, in this case, it might potentially do some good to get some of the higher-level issues figured out.” An industry source with expertise in sports law adds: “The executive branch doesn’t really have much power to do anything here so maybe they offer some recommendations that serve to push some legislative effort.” Wilner: “That, folks, is the key. If Trump remains engaged and appoints the right mix of voices — the commission must include ‘a diverse group of smart stakeholders with real college sports operating experience,’ one observer noted – the project could lead to substantive progress on the legislation needed.” (link)

Fresno State President Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval says campus will not be able to support the athletic department at the same financial level with specific thoughts on last year’s $19.7M of institutional support: “We can’t go there. These are no longer the times in which the university will say, ‘All right, we’re going to cover athletics and it will be fine.’ Within that then, the plan, not just the hope, is to have a plan in place so we can leverage all of the assets athletics has to their maximum capacity. How can we use facilities more? How can we move forward with multimedia? And, what other areas can we come up with that we can really leverage the revenue needed to sustain athletics?” Bulldogs AD Garrett Klassy: “I’ve said since Day One that we have to run this enterprise like a business and that’s what we’re going to do. We’re reviewing every revenue contract. Quite frankly, as attendance has gone up, revenue in some of those important areas has not gone up. We need to have some look-ins in all those contracts to make sure we’re maximizing those pieces of revenue. We can’t leave any stone unturned.” (link)

UTSA AD Lisa Campos joins the Alamo Audible podcast to discuss the Roadrunners’ approach to the House settlement and says when it comes to distributing revenue among student-athletes on particular teams, those decisions will be largely left up to coaches. “I have hired great individuals who know their business, who know what the recruiting world looks like. They are boots-on-ground. They know the market. … I'm not going to get in their business; I don't tell them who to recruit or what play to run. I'm going to give them a lot of autonomy to build their roster.” Campos also says she’s spoken with Football HC Jeff Traylor about the GM model, “and as a head coach, you lose some control [with] that if you go with this professional model with this GM. And Coach and I are really aligned about that he wants to be making those decisions. That's really important to him, and he's the one who, at the end of day, is the head coach and he wants to make those decisions, so we are in alignment.” While it remains to be seen what impact attending multiple schools will have on student-athletes, Campos notes another area to keep an eye on is how the ease of player movement will impact fan passion. “There's going to be a lot of studies done about this and in the meantime we're going to continue listening to our fans and our student-athletes and our staff about how do we best evolve and approach all of this change.” Full Q&A. The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler reports that just a year after the Mountain West joined the Big Ten officiating consortium to supply men’s basketball referees, five conference members have “essentially decided it wasn’t such a good decision.” As such, the Pac-12 will instead join the Big 12’s officiating consortium when it relaunches in 2026-27 with five MWC schools plus Oregon State, Washington State and Gonzaga. Zeigler also reports that San Diego State men’s basketball season ticket prices increased roughly 2.5%, and all of that was in the Aztec Club membership that is required to purchase them. The base price of seats remained flat. (link)

Athletic departments at the 10 public universities in the pre-realignment Pac-12 reported a combined $110M shortfall in FY24, with $1.34B in revenue and $1.45B in expenses, according to The San Jose Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who notes “Washington led all schools in both revenue ($190.9M) and expenses ($200.1MM), while Washington State booked the lowest totals in both categories ($89.5M and $89.1M, respectively).” Wilner also notes that all but one of the athletic departments relied heavily on school support. “That support typically takes two forms: 1) direct transfers from central campus; and 2) student fees that are allocated to athletics. In each case, the support is booked as revenue in accordance with the NCAA’s financial reporting rules. In all, the public schools provided athletic departments with $197.4M in support as Arizona State, Cal and UCLA accounted for more than half the total. … Oregon is the only school that did not book any student fees or direct transfers as revenue, and the Ducks managed to report an operating surplus of $1.9M. When the campus support is removed from the revenue total to create a more accurate picture of each department’s organic operations, that $110M shortfall morphs into a $307.4M crater.” More from Wilner, including the financial specifics of all 10 schools. Former Michigan State gymnast and Larry Nassar abuse survivor Rachel Denhollander joined fellow survivors Sterling Riethman and Trinea Gonczar and MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz to announce the formation of a new collaborative advisory board to help guide an institutional assessment and responsive action to sexual violence. ESPN’s Dan Wetzel observes that “what had long been an adversarial relationship between the school and survivors was suddenly aligned, as together they embarked on assessing policies, culture and institutional structure to make MSU and the community at large safer. … Rather than view the Nassar case as old news, [Guskiewicz] sought out survivors to assess what could still be done.” Wetzel goes on to write that MSU “sought out meaningful reform, but kept survivors at a distance. At one point, one survivor, Kaylee Lorincz, then 18 but who was just 13 when Nassar victimized her, ran into then-interim MSU President John Engler on campus. She asked to talk. ‘My hope was if he actually met a survivor he would be more empathetic,’ Lorincz said during a 2018 board of trustees meeting. Instead, Engler tried to negotiate with her, she said. ‘Mr. Engler ... looked directly at me and asked, 'Right now, if I wrote you a check for $250,000, would you take it?' When I explained that it's not about the money for me and that I just want to help, he said, 'Well, give me a number.'” Denhollander explained that “for me to be here, and for it to be collaborative, is an incredibly powerful thing to experience” and added: “This kind of institutional courage is rare. … It’s never too late to do the right thing.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich examines what President Trump’s college sports commission could accomplish and points out it remains unclear whether the NCAA’s wishes could be achieved via an executive order. A congressional aide tells Christovich that an EO may not be the appropriate mechanism to satisfy the NCAA’s requests. Instead, the aide notes they may have to be addressed through federal legislation. Christovich: “If not, more lawsuits could strike them down. (Several of Trump’s executive orders have been met with legal challenges, including one ending collective bargaining for federal workers and one addressing birthright citizenship.) A lobbyist, meanwhile, suggests that an EO more likely could be used to “establish the commission itself, which would then author a report and suggest guidelines for the White House to follow on college sports policy. Congressional Republicans would feel inclined to follow the recommendations of this commission in any potential legislation. … A comparable situation: Trump’s executive order last week establishing the ‘Religious Liberty Commission.’” (link)

Tennessee Tech President Phil Oldham joins Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to offer insight into the school’s AD search. Oldham emphasizes the importance of establishing a partnership with the next AD and cites his experience as a former member of the NCAA Board of Governors as a bridge: "I understand the dynamic nature of college sports today and the variety of issues we're dealing with, the changes that are here now and changes that may be coming in the future. It really requires university presidents to be heavily involved – it’s too important, the investment's too high, there are incredible connections that need to be made and sustained. I plan to be heavily involved.” Oldham also talks about the relationship between athletics and the university overall and notes Tennessee Tech “has a great reputation among the individuals who know us. Unfortunately, the world outside of Tennessee often doesn't know us very well, and athletics is one of those few ways that we can become known to a much wider audience than we would normally. And they can see how good we are athletically and hopefully take a look to see how good we are and everything else as well. So, athletics, I think it's very important to not just the campus culture itself – which is very true – but it's strategically very important for the university.” More on Connect. (link)

NJ.com’s Steve Politi breaks down what he believes Rutgers should look for in its next AD: “The Scarlet Knights need someone who can bring outside-the-box solutions to an entrenched set of problems. They need someone who will not only define success in Piscataway, but a forward thinker who can foresee the direction of NCAA athletics in the coming years and position this athletic department for the future.” The biggest priorities, according to Politi are fundraising, being proactive, setting priorities and defining success, developing a realistic facilities plan, fixing basketball, supporting football, avoiding scandals and reenergizing the fan base. “Fan optimism is low. That is mostly the result of a disappointing basketball season with stars Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper, but it also comes from a sense of hopelessness in the new world order of college sports. Rutgers struggled to compete before athletes were highly compensated professionals. How can it win now? The next athletic director needs to be a front-facing figure. The response to this hire should be ‘ooooh!’ not ‘who?’ — and, in the months that follow, this person should be out in the Rutgers community as much as possible. A successful AD often operates in the background, but Rutgers needs a visible leader.” Politi on avoiding scandals: “This one seems easy, right? Tell that to the last four athletic directors, all of whom resigned or were fired after a scandal — or, in the case of Julie Hermann, several — derailed their ability to lead the department. … The history of Rutgers athletics is marked with incremental gains stymied by self-inflicted wounds. The new AD has to smash that cycle for good.” (link)

North Texas is rebranding its Mean Green Scholarship Fund (MGSF) as the Mean Green Athletic Fund (MGAF) to reflect a broader commitment to enhancing the overall student-athlete experience. UNT is also launching the Green Lights Fund, a new revenue-sharing initiative designed to directly support student-athletes through NIL and marketing opportunities. Gifts to the Green Lights Fund can be directed to a specific sport or allocated towards a general fund that benefits all Mean Green student-athletes. While these gifts do not qualify for MGAF membership benefits, they will earn priority points. Mean Green AD Jared Mosley did not provide a specific rev-share figure to the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito, but expressed confidence in UNT’s ability to quickly raise funds that will move it toward the American’s $10M requirement. “Our baseline total revenue share number in this first year will position us well on the path to satisfying and surpassing the $10M minimum investment over the first three years. While revenue share and the House Settlement parameters remain fluid, the commitments to date from donors to provide support through our new Green Lights Fund and potential new revenues we are pursuing in events, concerts, and new multimedia rights assets, we are confident in our plan of revenue sharing support this first year.” (link, link)

In the first of a three-part sitdown with Sports Talk Florida’s Jim Williams, USF AD Michael Kelly discusses the importance of alignment with main campus as the Bulls navigate the changing landscape in college sports. “For instance, a good point regarding football is that when the transfer portal began gaining traction, many players would transfer after the football season ended, aiming to start in the early January semester. I remember that five years ago, this was nearly impossible. A player entered the portal when it first started, and we wondered if we could get them in before classes began the following week. Our admissions officers were often unavailable because they were on break and could not review the transcripts. It required a lot of explaining, like, ‘This is how things are going to be now.’ If we want to bring young men and women into our athletic department in the second semester, we must be able to adapt quickly. Fortunately, with the leadership of President [Rhea] Law and our Board of Trustees, they found ways to accommodate these changes. It involved collaboration with the admissions and registrar’s offices to realize that adapting was essential for our success.” (link)
