The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner on the Stanford AD search: “The process is likely many weeks from establishing a list of finalists, but we would suggest you keep an eye on Kevin Blue, a former Stanford golfer who worked in the athletic department, then became the AD at UC Davis and is now the CEO of Canada Soccer. Ultimately, Stanford must hire the person best suited to support football and position the Cardinal for the next chapter in college athletics. In our view, that requires giving nominal authority to the search committee and allowing [GM Andrew] Luck, president Jonathan Levin, former provost Condoleezza Rice and mega-donor Jesse Rogers to make the decision.” (link)

Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly comments on the new governance model proposed by the NCAA last week and explains: “The CCA-22 commissioners were presented with the draft model on Monday afternoon, but were told not to share the model outside of the presentation. If adopted as presented, it will hand unchecked control of the Division I governance process to four conferences: the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, and Big 12. These leagues would gain a 65% weighted voting bloc on NCAA committees—an insurmountable majority that effectively silences the voices of the rest of Division I, including conferences like The Big West. In short: a structure in which a few decide for all. This is not shared governance. This is consolidation of power by the very conferences, institutions and leadership that helped drive the NCAA into its current legal and financial crisis. And now, they seek to rewrite the rules to insulate themselves from accountability, while expecting others to share the financial burden of settlement costs from cases like House v. NCAA. Let’s be bold and honest: the only thing holding Division I together right now is a legal settlement. NCAA President Charlie Baker has said as much—that if the A4 conferences walk away, they alone would be responsible for the full financial cost of the House settlement. Rather than risk that, this proposal looks like an effort to force out those of us who still believe in education, access, parity, and opportunity for student-athletes across all institutions—not just the richest ones. And once governance is centralized, what’s to stop them from restricting national championship access? From changing scholarship rules in ways that disadvantage mid-majors? … Absolutely nothing. This isn’t bold leadership. It’s power consolidation masquerading as progress. The Big West will not stand by silently. … In the weeks ahead, The Big West will work with our peer conferences to demand a better model—one that respects the diversity of Division I and honors the values of equity, education, and competition.” More from Butterly. Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman tells HoopsHQ’s Seth Davis that “we’re not establishing any [revenue-sharing] guidelines in the Big East, but there’s a general sense among our schools that they are going to spend what they believe they need to be spending in order to be competitive.” Opendorse Founder Blake Lawrence projects Big East schools will assign $5.7M of revenue to men’s basketball next season compared to $4.4M for the ACC, $4.3M for the Big 12, $3.2M for the Big Ten and $3.1M for the SEC. Davis notes that coaches within the Big East are proceeding with cautious optimism heading into next season, and Creighton HC Greg McDermott explains: “The reality is, we don’t have a huge TV contract in comparison to what the football schools are able to take in. So if we’re going to pay out more in revenue share, we’ve got to raise it, or you have to figure out a way to generate it within your department. That’s not as easy as it sounds, because everybody’s kind of struggling to survive the way it is, but we found a way at Creighton to remain competitive in this environment and I think a lot of our friends across the Big East will attempt to do the same.” (link)

Radford is restructuring the athletics program “with the intent to grow its NCAA Division I intercollegiate program by offering high-quality sports that appeal to a greater number of student-athletes.” Specifically, the restructuring “includes three steps: establishing distance-focused intercollegiate men's indoor and outdoor track and field programs for the 2025-26 academic year, creating women's flag football as a club sport this fall, and discontinuing the intercollegiate men's and women's tennis programs. Highlanders AD Robert Lineburg: "By establishing Division I scholarship programs for men's indoor and outdoor track and field along with a women's flag football program, we will meet the needs and interests of more student-athletes.” Per Radford’s release, tennis was discontinued after determining that the “tennis programs would likely continue to struggle to remain competitive in the coming years at current funding levels, with existing facilities. Discontinuing tennis will enable the reallocation of resources to other competitive sports programs with broader appeal.” (link)

“Go big or go home” is how USF AD Michael Kelly describes the approach to the Bulls’ new on-campus football stadium, and SBJ’s Bret McCormick points out: “USF’s belief is the stadium will give it a degree of control over its athletics future — particularly football and revenue generation — that it’s never had. USF Bulls football is only 28 years old, and nearly every home game since 1997 has been played at the Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium. USF controlled little of that experience, and the financial benefits it derived from playing at ‘Ray Jay’ were hampered by being the rent-paying ($2.66M in 2023) second tenant in an NFL stadium owned by the Tampa Sports Authority.” Naming rights alone present a significant revenue opportunity, and McCormick points out that in addition to the stadium itself, “USF’s new venue will include nearly a dozen other namable premium spaces, and Kelly expects the Bulls to go from zero dollars in stadium-related sponsorship revenue to eight figures annually.” Kelly: “When you lay out how you want the campus to activate – you can put these sponsors here, visiting fans here – makes it kind of fun to reimagine. I’m energized by that. I think a lot of people would love the opportunity to truly start from scratch; a new era and a new stadium.” (link)

UT Martin AD/Softball Selection Committee Chair Kurt McGuffin covered several topics following yesterday’s NCAA Tournament selection show. On seven SEC teams earning top-eight hosting berths, McGuffin explained: “[Yes], resumes and how it fell. I think in the back of your mind, you’re going, ‘Well, well…’ but in the end, the criteria and the committee’s priorities again, especially with the top eight seeds, top 10 wins, top 25 wins, clean backside is what we call it – clean quads three and four. I think that’s important. And I think those priorities were very, very consistently ran and that’s how the teams fell.” McGuffin also says three Big Ten teams being among the last four in is “how it fell…and I think also, the Big Ten, I’m going to follow up a little bit, they had a lot of teams in their conference that were 50-plus in the RPI, which provided some of those wins there too.” On the implications of more losses with a tougher schedule: “I think your strength of schedule implicates that. You still have to win some of them, I mean, but I think the credit is the strength of schedule. When you’re looking at teams with strength of schedule in the 150s and 200s or more, that’s hard, because the RPI and the strength of schedule all reflect that. And I think that’s a big piece of it, the scheduling is a big piece of probably any conference, but definitely the mid-major conferences.” Lots more, including the impact of the SEC Championship game not being played. Coaches Corner presented by D1.relocation…
+ Clemson is paying $1.35M to bring in Cal's Justin Howell and Elisabeth Crandall-Howell as Gymnastics Co-HCs, according to The Post & Courier’s Jon Blau, who explains: “The Howells, who were at Cal for more than a decade, were awarded matching five-year contracts at Clemson, earning $225K apiece annually. Those contracts automatically extend to six years, through April 2031, if Clemson makes the NCAA tournament during their tenure. … Clemson is also paying $450K per coach to Cal for their contract buyouts, plus an estimated $225K per coach to assure those payments are tax neutral. That's $1.35M just to get the Howells out of their previous contracts.” Tigers AD Graham Neff acknowledges that "this is certainly a statement and an investment in Clemson gymnastics, of which we've had national prominence just in our first two years of competition. We have high expectations and aspirations of national championship-caliber competition and growth ahead." (link)

The News & Observer’s Luke DeCock predicts this week’s ACC meetings to be relatively docile compared to recent years: “Not only does there figure to be a lack of back-hallway politics, there may not be very many contentious topics for discussion. The men’s and women’s basketball tournaments have been booked through 2029 and 2027 respectively, the broad strokes on the new 18-game basketball schedule format are settled and the interminable battle over how revenue is distributed was settled by the settlement with the would-be breakaway schools.” DeCock goes on to submit that “it’s unlikely the three days will go by without Florida State finding something to complain about, if history is any guide, but for the moment detente is holding. And there will be the now-unavoidable question of whether North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick will be there alone or encumbered by significant other, although one imagines his first meeting with his new peers would be the kind of environment — 17 football coaches talkin’ some ball — where he’s utterly in his element. His presence has already been noted: ESPN will broadcast SportsCenter live from the Ritz on Tuesday, with Belichick one of three coaches requested for an appearance.” (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel joined the Pat McAfee Show and explained that while SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been more “guarded” about securing four AQs for the expanded College Football Playoff than Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti has, the "notion that I’ve gotten, especially in the last week, is that Sankey has started to align himself more with Petitti on the potential of four, and the compromise of all this is to create more spots for the College Football Playoff, which is why 16 has really come into focus. Now, what the 16-team playoff looks like, how it goes, how the automatic qualifiers end up being determined, do you have conference championship games, do you not have conference championship games…we’ve probably got six weeks, two months before it all comes together. But I do know this: In the SEC especially – and in the Big Ten, too – the coaches are pushing, they want automatic bids and they are pushing more towards it and if the SEC is going to go to nine games, which is appearing a little more likely, they want that extra protection.” Petitti, Thamel adds, “has a background in the NFL, that’s always been his thing to have a Minnesota-Rutgers game where they’re hovering around .500 have playoff stakes.” In regards to the skyrocketing payrolls of college rosters, Thamel observes that “we’re in a quintessential college sports moment right now where everyone is in a hurry to frontload so when the settlement does happen…that the amount of money spent against the cap, which is going to come, if you spent it already it wouldn’t count. So there was basically a fake market…so there was this huge push both in football and basketball to get all these deals done.” Thamel recalls one agent telling him “I’ve never negotiated with someone before [and said], ‘No, no, no, we’ll pay you now – forget everything later, we’ll pay you upfront.’” As such, Thamel says it’s not shocking that Texas’ football payroll could be upwards of $35-40M. Sacramento State AD Mark Orr shows viewers around the former student fitness facility, which is being redesigned to host NCAA basketball games. The new facility replaces The Nest, a 1,000-seat venue that has been open for 73 years. The revamped facility includes new 24-second shot clocks and equipment and will feature 3,200 seats, two video boards and other amenities. Orr: “It’s a sign of progress. We’ve needed this for years. It’s the evolution of the program. Since I was a kid growing up here in Sacramento, Sac State has always been looking for a sustainable venue. We will finally have it, and our school and our student-athletes deserve it. We want to maximize the student experience.” Have a look around. (link)

AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz moderated the Women Leading The Way panel at Paciolan’s PACnet ‘25, a wide-ranging conversation featuring Women’s Sports Foundation CEO Danette Leighton, Baylor Deputy AD/CRO Jovan Overshown and Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall Executive Director Elizabeth Gray. Topics included building a career in sports and performing arts; the tangible skills that administrators in external and revenue-generating units should hone; momentum for women’s sports; how motherhood has made them stronger leaders; and more. Overshown remarked during the discussion that “looking across the department coming in, there weren’t that many females in leadership at the time but I was so appreciative of the males that were willing to take a chance [on me].” Overshown added that “I think part of the strategy in your career is being in tune enough to recognize: Is that spark ignited? Is there something in you that even on the bad days still fires you up and makes you want to continue to dive into more…do intentionally listen to that inner voice.” Leighton remarked that “this movement in women’s sports is not a coincidence – it’s decades and decades and decades of work. Both men and women of Gen X have grown up watching women and men play sports, which is a really big part of what you’re seeing right now in this movement and investment in women’s sports. … People in the external roles need to put a priority and a focus on creating these great moments for building fandom.” Full panel discussion. FootballScoop’s John Brice shares more from last week’s National Football Operations Organization’s annual meeting, particularly on the technological changes coming to the sport. “Among the biggest: engine cameras are being phased out of the broadcasting element of games – with the NFL’s Competition Committee already passing a measure to have mounted PTZ cameras – pan-tilt-zoom – throughout the league by 2026.” Clemson and Kansas, Brice notes, are among the college programs already shifting to this model. Brice quotes a speaker from 8K Solutions as saying: “By 2029, your major platforms – Catapult, tv sports, Hudl, etc. -- are going to a live-capture platform. It’s kind of not optional. Sometime in the next two to three years, you’re going to have to go to a capture format that requires camera feeds back to a central location in order to ingest (the video content, such as from practices or games). Those guys that have for years popped the memory cards, run to the video room and plugged in…that’s going away in the next two, three years. 70% of the NFL is already set up to do this, and a dozen or more college teams now are set up for this.” The company also showed off its “walk-through walls” which allow teams to turn an entire wall into a life-sized walk-through simulation. Programs that already have the capability to integrate walk-through walls include Michigan, Notre Dame, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Ole Miss and Penn State, among others. Lots more. (link)

After a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, Green Bay Men’s Basketball HC Doug Gottlieb pens an article for HoopsHQ outlining how he’s building next season’s roster. “With no general manager, our coaching staff had been game-planning for the offseason long before it arrived. We prepared a strategy based on who we anticipated would hit the transfer portal. During the middle of the season, I even sent two of my assistants on the road for three weeks to watch all of the best junior college players in the country. First, we had to do exit interviews and figure out which of our players would be staying in Green Bay” Gottlieb explains that schools like Green Bay “we have to lead the league in retention in order to be successful” and “we didn’t look to add a lot of high school kids. It’s just too hard to compete in our league with a young roster. So we got to work in the portal, focusing our recruitment on three major groups: JUCO players, high-level Division II and Division III players and players originally from Wisconsin who might be interested in coming home. Each player we pursued had to check three additional boxes: 1) They had to be tough, 2) They had to come from a winning program, and 3) They had to fit our culture. We didn’t want guys who routinely miss practice, or smoke weed, or don’t take school seriously. As former Green Bay coach Dick Bennett told me, ‘The better the kid, the more they’ll improve.’ He’s absolutely right.” More from Gottlieb. (link)

On3’s Charles Power analyzes why high-profile high school football powerhouses are producing four- and five-star recruits at high rates but “greatly underperform when the NFL Draft rolls around.” Specifically, Power studied blue-chip prospects in the 2016-2021 recruiting cycles from Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco, Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy, Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman, Lakeland (Fla.) High, Loganville (Ga.) Grayson, and Washington (D.C.) St. John’s College. From those schools, 44.8% of five-star recruits are drafted into the NFL while 18.1% of four-stars hear their name called on draft day. Power: “The figures are significantly below average for any four or five-star prospect. 65.4% of all five-star prospects were picked in the last five NFL Drafts. 23.8% of all four-star prospects were drafted in that timeframe. A considerable chunk of recent undrafted five-stars come from these programs. Just one of the eight programs (Bishop Gorman) has an above average four-star draft rate.” One reason for the disparity, Power explains, could involve exposure bias. “It’s easy to come away with a distorted view of the individual prospect based on the degree of in-person or media exposure. Social proof and herd behavior can contribute to overweighting a prospect’s play or attributes simply by the high visibility and perceived elevated stage.” Furthermore, Power submits that overspecialization and deep rosters can lead to limited reps for the athletes. “We also see fewer multi-sport athletes at these football factories. Prospects at IMG Academy specialize in football. Some of these other programs often have high-level basketball teams, making it more difficult for a prospect to play both sports. Multi-sport participation correlates with the NFL Draft, with over 75% of early-round picks having played multiple sports in high school.” More from Power. (link)
