San Francisco State Interim AD Brandon Davis sits down with the Golden Gate Xpress’ Lourence Alturino to discuss the Gators’ push to increase the IRA fee, which helps support athletics. Davis notes the current fee sends $68 to athletics and has not increased since it was introduced 15 years ago and the $32 increase next year, followed by $25 each of the next three years and a 5% annual increase after that gets SFSU back to where the fee would be if it had increased at 5% since the outset. The increase, per Davis, would give athletics more stability and flexibility to not rely on general fund dollars that would be opened up for the rest of the institution and begin to repay costs owed back to the university to cover deficits in recent years. Davis’ message to students regarding the vote on the increase: “So if you’re already one of those students [on full financial aid], you won’t feel that $32 because it’s in your financial aid package, essentially. For those who can afford it, it’s a few cups of coffee to preserve campus life. Over the semester, the thing is that we need to realize that, if things get cut, things don’t come back. So the more and more things that get cut, it changes what a campus looks like. […] It works for everybody. And I think $32 to preserve the life and just invest in the university, because if we don’t invest in the university, I’d hate to see what the future looks like down the line.” The data from a student survey will be presented to the Student Fee Advisory Committee today and based on the results a recommendation would be made to President Lynn Mahoney. + The Sonoma County Superior Court has ruled Sonoma State can eliminate athletics and six academic departments, noting in its ruling: “This Court cannot conclude that the decision to eliminate the athletics program amounted to an abuse of discretion. The law affords (Sonoma State) great deference in making decisions that impact the school’s survival and solvency.” (link)
+ College of Charleston (DI)/former Southeastern Oklahoma State men’s basketball student-athlete Anton Brzovic’s motion to enjoin the NCAA’s five-year eligibility clock rule has been denied. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter: “Notably, the court held the five-year rule is not subject to antitrust law (b/c it’s not commercial in nature). Opposite outcome of the (Rutgers Football student-athlete Jett) Elad case.” (link)

In the latest episode of The Player Development Pod, Ed Jones II shares three key strategies to help attendees maximize every moment of the upcoming 2025 Player Development Summit.

With just two weeks until the event (5/29-5/31), Jones mentions preparing with purpose, being fully present, and following up with intention as keys to success for attending any conference, but specifically the Player Development Summit in Kansas City. The NCAA DI Decision-Making Group has released an update on its draft conceptual framework for a new governance structure and notes that current challenges in the decision-making include having over 80 committees, hundreds of committee members, difficulty in moving decisions quickly through the structure, and a lack of accessibility for those who are not entrenched in the structure day-to-day. The new framework identifies categories that should be consistent for all of DI and those that can be bifurcated as part of an effort to decentralize rules. DI-specific issues include minimum academic standards, athletics eligibility rules, compliance with recruiting calendars, regular season end dates, national championships administration, minimum membership requirements, institutional control and ethical conduct. Bifurcated elements that could be managed at the subdivisional, school or conference level include in-season competitions, out-of-season competition, playing and practice schedules, number and responsibility of staff, and others as deemed appropriate by unified governance to comply with settlement or future litigation. The framework would also reduce the number of DI Board of Directors voting members from 24 to 13; however, the board would still have 24 votes, as each of the Power 4 conferences “has a guaranteed seat on the board with a voting weight of 4.1. The additional representatives to the board are three student-athletes, two FBS non-autonomy or Group of 6 representatives, two representatives from the CCA22 grouping, as well as an additional representative from FCS and one from Division I. Each of those representatives has a voting weight of one. In addition, the working group is exploring including the NCAA president as an ex officio non-voting member of the board.” Additionally, the DI Council would be replaced by a DI Administrative Group with 24 voting members and 41.1 total votes. The nine P4 representatives’ votes would carry a weight of 2.9 while all others would carry a weight of one. Lots more. (link)

New Haven Football HC Chris Pincince has reportedly exited per FootballScoop’s John Brice, who adds: “Sources told FootballScoop on Monday that internally within the football program there had been a desire to play a reduced schedule in the fall in order to ‘preserve redshirts’ for players as New Haven transitioned from D-2 to FCS.” DC Mark Powell will serve as Interim HC. ESPN is naming its upcoming all-access flagship streaming app ‘ESPN’ according to CNBC media and sports reporter Alex Sherman. ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro reportedly settled on the ESPN moniker to “simplify what has become a cluttered streaming world, filled with different media products that can be bundled with other services at different price points.” Pricing for the new service set to debut in the fall is expected to be released next week, but previous reporting put the expected cost at either $25 or $30 a month. Connect’s Kristen Eargle caught up with The Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman to dive deeper into Bachman’s reporting of financial challenges for U.S.A Track & Field & the impact NGB’s may have on college athletics in the future given a changing landscape. Bachman on how NGBs could add value to the collegiate ecosystem: “One thing that some people have talked about is trying to cooperate more. Colleges have something enormously valuable and that’s their brands. There’s been a lot of upstart professional sports in recent years, like lacrosse, but they have a huge disadvantage and that’s they don’t have known brands. They don’t have known school names, logos, conference affiliations, history. College Sports has all those things so that’s a massive, massive advantage. One option would be, where possible, for NGBs and colleges to hold events together. Track & Field already does this in some ways, like the meet in New York has professional athletes and high school athletes at the same event. Different races, same event, so they can draw a wider swath of fans. I think colleges can do that. They already have meets that draw their own fanbases, but maybe adding more professionals to the mix. By the same token, I think the governing bodies could look at forming alliances with the colleges and in turn could even join forces on facilities.” Lots more. (link)
