+ The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel has comments from NCAA President Charlie Baker on President Trump’s college sports commission: “I’m up for anything that can help us get somewhere.” (link)
+ More from Baker: “I think the fact that there's an interest on the executive side on this, I think it speaks to the fact that everybody is paying a lot of attention right now to what's going on in college sports. I'm up for anything that can help us get somewhere.” When asked whether he felt the creation of a commission would enhance the NCAA's chances at legislative relief, Baker replied: “I don't have a crystal ball on that one. I don't know. I do think, though, that it's quite clear at this point that there are a lot of people interested in college sports, and we do need some help at some point to create some clarity around some of these issues in Washington. Creating clarity one lawsuit at a time is just a really bad way to try to move forward." (link)
+ Former Alabama (DI) Football HC Nick Saban tells ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum that while he doesn’t want to get too far into the specifics about what he would hope to accomplish on the presidential college sports commission, the “first thing is everybody’s got a different state law…and everybody’s trying to create advantages. So we probably need an interstate commerce type something that gets it all there. I don’t think it's in the best interest of the players to necessarily be employees. And I think authentic name, image and likeness is good for players, but I don’t think pay-for-play is necessarily what we want. So, you know, what is college? We all went to college to create value for our future, and I think we want to keep some semblance of that in terms of guys developing as people, as students and developing a career off the field as well as developing the ability to play at the next level. So we’ve got to have a system that enhances all three of those.” Saban also remarks that he doesn’t believe he should be the tip of the spear on this issue, adding: “I think I’m someone who has lots of experience and certainly would like to help anyone who would seek our help to try to help fix it because I spent my whole life, 50 years, trying to help players be more successful in life. And I want to see us continue to be able to do that not just in football, but in all sports across the board. We’ve got to protect Olympic sports whether they produce revenue or not.” (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann notes that attorney Laura Reathaford’s objection to the revised House settlement includes a request that, should U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken approve the settlement, she also stay implementation of the injunction “until the resolution of all appeals.” Reathaford contends that approach would prevent “fundamental unfairness” in the form of athletes immediately losing roster spots. McCann explains that’s an “important request, because a stay of the injunction likely means the settlement wouldn’t go into effect for many months (if ever), since objectors would appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and possibly the U.S. Supreme Court. Given that many conferences and colleges have acted as if the settlement is a done deal for the 2025-26 academic year, a stay would mean those institutions’ leaders made an erroneous and overconfident assumption.” Meanwhile, an objection filed by attorneys Douglas M. DePeppe and Robert B. Hinckley Jr. argue that giving the schools the option to grandfather in players is unlikely to protect many athletes: “The member schools, many of whom having made roster cuts just in the weeks since April 23, have no intrinsic incentive to reverse course and invite back their cut athletes.” McCann observes that “many of the points raised in these memos are difficult to rebut from a factual standpoint. … The relevant legal question is whether what might be seen as ‘less bad’ is ‘good enough’ for Wilken. The judge has described most of the settlement’s terms…in a favorable light. She also doesn’t need to regard the settlement as perfect or excellent, but instead a more modest assessment that it is reasonable.” (link)

SAA Commissioner Stacey LaDew sits down with D3.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention to discuss the association’s rebrand, membership changes and more. With Southwestern and Trinity (TX) joining this fall, followed by Maryville as a full member in 2026, LaDew believes the SAA membership is committed to the league, adding: “This last year, I was able to undergo a reimagining of our mission and values and our four pillars of the SAA. We did that in a membership transition committee and we really looked at who we are and who we want to be and I really feel confident that our members are proud of who we are. We are very strong academic institutions. We hold our academics up high. We're proud of that and we do a lot of things to make sure that that is the pinnacle of our league.” When joining the league, LaDew was not thinking about rebranding the conference, which had done so 13 years earlier with the assistance of a student. “In my first 100 days, I went on my listening tour to all of our campuses and I just kept, ‘Maybe it's time for a change; maybe it's time to revamp.’” One unique design element in the new logo is the three lines underneath the SAA wordmark, which both pay homage to the DIII roots and “indicates the drive that we have as a conference. Unfortunately, one of the things that also connects us are the roads between us. We do a lot of driving to get to each other. There are a couple of different aspects in there that really help us to tell our story, but the drive within all of our institutions to be nationally prominent, to be the pinnacle of Division III.” More on BOSCA. The GOP-led House Ways and Means Committee reportedly plans to unveil changes next week that will increase endowment tax rates and include more colleges, according to Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody, who notes the committee is expected to propose raising endowment excise taxes 1.4% to up to 21%, depending on endowment value per student. The proposed endowment tax would only apply to private institutions, as it does currently. Moody: “Under the proposed formula, institutions with endowments of $750K to $1.25M per student would reportedly be hit with 7% excise tax. That number would climb to a 14% tax for colleges with endowments valued at $1.25 to $2M per student. Colleges at the highest level with endowments of $2M or more per student would pay 21%.” Moody notes, however, that the specifics of the tax increase are not final. (link)
