North Central (IL) promotes AD Miller to Senior Director of Athletics. VP for Student Affairs and Athletics Brown: “Jim knows what it takes to build and support championship-level athletic programs—from to diversity, equity, and inclusion; to coach and student-athlete development; to fundraising.” (link)

More context around the latest realignment for the SCAC and ASC, with D3sports’ Coleman noting of the former which “is sitting pretty,” and moved quickly to replace Southwestern and Trinity (TX) who are exiting for the SAA. Coleman: “One thing missing from this description of conference membership is a facet which had been part of the SCAC identity for decades, and that is a commitment to high standards of academics. Trinity and Southwestern think of themselves as committed to academics, as do a large number of the schools which split from the conference in 2011.” (link); As for the ASC, the league will be down to six members come 2024 as it searches for a new commissioner. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Hogue ponders what may be next for the ASC, with UT Dallas serving as the wild card of the remaining six, as UTD has conducted a DII feasibility study that was put on pause during the pandemic. As for possible paths forward, Hogue writes that would require UTD to remain or for the league to find a new member via the NAIA. Further: “Some have said the ASC and the SCAC will have a football alliance to help the ASC maintain an automatic bid to the playoffs. … However, the SCAC is in a position of strength and only needs to ally with the ASC if they departed for competitive reasons. Other sources have mentioned the possibility of Texas Lutheran or Schreiner wanting to be part of a more competitive conference and moving back to the ASC. Of course, the conference would welcome two football schools with open arms. However, this option seems like at least another year away, especially with the ASC still needing a new Commissioner.” More. (link)

LEAD1 CEO McMillen breaks down the current state of federal NIL legislation, noting the GOP-controlled House of Representatives is likely to pass a skinny bill to “avoid other committees with possible jurisdiction.” Meanwhile, U.S. Senators Tuberville (R-AL) and Manchin (D-WV) are attempting to negotiate a compromise bill, and McMillen explains such a bill would “likely include some of the provisions the House avoided.” As such, passing a bill in the Senate “may need to include other provisions, such as a medical trust fund, increased Title IX penalties, a Congressional Committee to study Title IX compliance or eliminating the tax deduction for donations to collectives. … The challenge, of course, is that the employment issue is looming and outstanding court cases and California pending legislation may accelerate the timetable for additional Congressional action on these matters. Based upon the House hearing, it is evident that there are a minority of House members who would support an employment model. The issue is that if the courts or California move forward on employment or revenue sharing, the Congress will have to act with speed to overturn such action. Given the difficulty passing an NIL bill, stopping an employment model would be a challenge.” (link)

The NCAA details its current efforts related to the growth of sports gambling, noting that President Baker instituted a national survey concerning sports betting among young adults between the ages of 18 and 22. “Those results are under review now and will be released in the coming weeks. The NCAA will conduct a more comprehensive national survey of student-athletes on sports wagering in the 2023-24 academic year.” Baker: “Advertisers may see this as an emerging market, but this could be an emerging threat to young people everywhere if we all don't work together." Meanwhile, NCAA CMO Hainline explains the NCAA Mental Health Advisory Group is modernizing the current Best Practices document. “Part of their updated focus is to address the potentially negative impact of social media harassment and abuse, which often springs from individuals who are involved with sport corruption or wagering. In addition, there will be updated guidance on management of gambling disorders." The NCAA also continues to leverage its resources in education and integrity services to protect student-athletes and the fairness of competition. To that end, NCAA Managing Director of Enforcement Hicks remarks: “Integrity efforts work best when the ecosystem is communicating and in sync. We'll continue to work with regulators and partners to act aggressively at ensuring the integrity of NCAA competition." Lots more. (link)
