BYU officially introduced its new AD in Brian Santiago, who remarked that it was a “privilege to be [outgoing AD Tom Holmoe’s] wingman. I loved coming to work every day with him. Tom and I have a lot of similarities, but we’re also unique in our own approach. It’s one of the things that I always loved about Tom is that I always felt empowered, I always felt like I had a voice. … I feel like in every organization on Planet Earth, when there’s new leadership, our personalities, our vision, our dreams, our hopes, this is a new day. The president just talked about the ever-changing landscape of college athletics. And one of the things I’m really grateful for is, for especially the last three or four years, Tom’s really empowered me where I’ve kind of taken a deep drive into the world of NIL, rev-share, in the trenches with our coaches, with our student-athletes, working alongside some of our important stakeholders that have helped us along the way and kind of have some context there that is really going to help us as we jump into this new era. I think the one thing that I’ll do is make sure and protect the great things that we’ve established together. And when I say ‘we,’ I don’t just mean Tom and me. All these coaches in the room, every member of our athletic department, we’re united in this.” Full press conference. (link)

ACC Spring Meetings Wrap-up…
+ Warchant’s Ira Schoffel shares more from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips’ remarks at the ACC Spring Meetings, noting that “when asked by Warchant on Wednesday what measures the ACC can even take to push for more [College Football Playoff] automatic qualifiers, Phillips again declined to elaborate. Phillips: “I don’t want to go into any more details on that. And it’s a really good question, but again, just in fairness of where we’re at as a group, we’ve all kind of committed to trying to work together. And I’ve made some comments in the past that I continue to stand by.” Without getting into specifics, Phillips said the ACC’s revenues for the most recent fiscal year will be a substantial increase from the $706.6M reported last May: “It’s very positive, and that’ll come out shortly. We continue to increase and grow. It’s a high-water mark for the league, in the history of the league.” That said, Phillips added: “I try not to sit still on any of that and try to continue to be creative in any ways we can generate and provide additional resources for our schools. But it’s on a really good path, and it’s going in the right direction.” Phillips on President Trump’s college sports commission: “I’m hopeful that that can be a positive to an end result that gets us a standardized law across the country with NIL – whether it’s a skinny protection or some type of legal protection from the ongoing onslaught of legal cases against the NCAA and college sports. And that there’s the reaffirmation that these are students. Though compensated, they’re students.” (link)
+ The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel puts a bow on the meetings, during which Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock said of the detente with Florida State and Clemson: “There’s certainly some residual effect, but it’s nice not to have the public brand damage from those lawsuits. The league is better with Clemson and Florida State in it.” Babcock also commented on potential College Football Playoff formats: “Certainly, I and we are opposed to an invitational playoff. I know of no other league that predetermines slots. We are going through the House (antitrust) case, and every league wants more structure, and then to set off a playoff structure that isn’t a level playing field doesn’t make much sense. Past performance is in the past. … The reason we went to an expanded playoff was to prove it on the field, and I hope the conversation reroutes from the (multiple) automatic slots. … I don’t believe ESPN wants a pre-baked [CFP]. I don’t believe the general public does. Again, past performance from those two leagues has been great, and we need to improve our standing. But setting the course for the future based on the past doesn’t make a lot of sense.” (link)
+ More from Amelia Island, where Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports Phillips said of North Carolina’s hire of Football HC Bill Belichick: [ESPN] ran to us, before we could even run to them [about televising more UNC games]. It's a great thing for the ACC, a great thing for North Carolina and we are all following the massive coverage that Coach Belichick draws.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was on The Paul Finebaum Show yesterday & provided updated thoughts on key industry items. On the House settlement: “Our need is for a decision, and then a lot of our time in Destin will be filled with instruction and orientation with service providers, but also with our staff, talking through how implementation will work. That’s way inside baseball … but that’s the work that occupies an enormous amount of time across all the conferences involved in this litigation.” As for College Football Playoff allocations & seeding, as well as future SEC Football scheduling strategy: “So for us, Texas went from No. 3 to No. 5. Tennessee went from hosting to not hosting. It’s difficult to explain and defend that decision-making. Not to mention that group that’s left out. The way you break it down is, we have the top four spots in the 12-team Playoff that matter. Then, we have the next four, those are home games, the next four who are in, and the next four who are out. That’s driven a lot of conversation. As we think about our schedule, we’re governed by playoff decisions, when you think about it. Do you want to play — you just heard [Georgia Football HC] Kirby [Smart] talking about the rigor of our eight-game schedule, plus the championship game, but the creative thinking around play-ins? That’s bubbled up in our conversation, that championship Saturday, maybe having some more games that might create more hope. I think it’s a really interesting concept, but we need some clarity around what’s going to happen with the college football playoff format. So, there’s a lot of entanglements. A lot of important issues. A lot of opportunity, if we manage this properly.” More from On3. (link, link)

Louisville will likely move forward with paying student-athletes even if U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken rejects the House settlement, according to Cardinals AD Josh Heird, who says: “That's probably the path we would go down. Just from the standpoint of the more control you can have of the situation, the better. It's been a little bit disjointed with outside entities, collectives, doing things. So I would presume that's the road we would go down.” Heird also says the settlement’s roster limits will have “little to no impact” because the Cards’ rosters are “relatively small by comparison with other peer institutions.” Asked whether UL could implement an LLC model similar to that of Kentucky’s, Heird responds: “With everything going on around college athletics, it's a good time to take a step back and observe what others are doing. And, as I've told our staff, we don't need to be out in front on anything that we're doing. Let’s let the landscape evolve a little bit, look at the pros and cons of what others are doing and what makes the most sense for us. And then once we feel like we have the information we need to make a decision, we'll make a decision.” (link)

Georgia Tech AD J Batt sits down with former Seattle Mariners/Texas Rangers/New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and Bloomberg’s Jason Kelly to discuss the new college landscape and how Georgia Tech plans to stand out. When it comes to recruiting talent and raising funds, Batt explains: “I think the most important thing is to value and constantly work on genuine relationships. I think it’s often forgotten [in], ‘My value prop or my business plan is so good that of course someone's going to buy this or invest in this or give us money because, my goodness, we're winning games or we want to win games or whatever it might be.’ People give to people. People invest in people. And so being available, being part of that, investing in those relationships so that when the time comes for that ask it's not the first thing you’ve heard of them. It’s important to be there.” Batt believes that as college sports moves into its next era “I think what you will see is we’re going to go back to a place that an opportunity to come to a place like Georgia Tech and graduate with that degree, that’s going to matter more than maybe it has in the past three, four, five years.” (link)

Mississippi State has received a $1M gift from a “dedicated family in Jackson, Mississippi,” to support the Billy W. Howard Sr. Indoor Practice Facility. The belief in our vision from dedicated supporters like this family fuels our continued pursuit of elevating our football program to new heights." (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann notes that attorney Laura Reathaford’s objection to the revised House settlement includes a request that, should U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken approve the settlement, she also stay implementation of the injunction “until the resolution of all appeals.” Reathaford contends that approach would prevent “fundamental unfairness” in the form of athletes immediately losing roster spots. McCann explains that’s an “important request, because a stay of the injunction likely means the settlement wouldn’t go into effect for many months (if ever), since objectors would appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and possibly the U.S. Supreme Court. Given that many conferences and colleges have acted as if the settlement is a done deal for the 2025-26 academic year, a stay would mean those institutions’ leaders made an erroneous and overconfident assumption.” Meanwhile, an objection filed by attorneys Douglas M. DePeppe and Robert B. Hinckley Jr. argue that giving the schools the option to grandfather in players is unlikely to protect many athletes: “The member schools, many of whom having made roster cuts just in the weeks since April 23, have no intrinsic incentive to reverse course and invite back their cut athletes.” McCann observes that “many of the points raised in these memos are difficult to rebut from a factual standpoint. … The relevant legal question is whether what might be seen as ‘less bad’ is ‘good enough’ for Wilken. The judge has described most of the settlement’s terms…in a favorable light. She also doesn’t need to regard the settlement as perfect or excellent, but instead a more modest assessment that it is reasonable.” (link)

Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban tells ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum that while he doesn’t want to get too far into the specifics about what he would hope to accomplish on the presidential college sports commission, the “first thing is everybody’s got a different state law…and everybody’s trying to create advantages. So we probably need an interstate commerce type something that gets it all there. I don’t think it's in the best interest of the players to necessarily be employees. And I think authentic name, image and likeness is good for players, but I don’t think pay-for-play is necessarily what we want. So, you know, what is college? We all went to college to create value for our future, and I think we want to keep some semblance of that in terms of guys developing as people, as students and developing a career off the field as well as developing the ability to play at the next level. So we’ve got to have a system that enhances all three of those.” Saban also remarks that he doesn’t believe he should be the tip of the spear on this issue, adding: “I think I’m someone who has lots of experience and certainly would like to help anyone who would seek our help to try to help fix it because I spent my whole life, 50 years, trying to help players be more successful in life. And I want to see us continue to be able to do that not just in football, but in all sports across the board. We’ve got to protect Olympic sports whether they produce revenue or not.” (link)

Negotiations about the future format of the College Football Playoff are getting “messy,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who is told by one ACC AD that “no one likes” a setup in which the SEC and Big Ten would receive four AQs each while the ACC and Big 12 would receive two. NC State Football HC Dave Doeren: “We are fighting for our spots. We believe we deserve three [automatic qualifiers] as a minimum.” ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips was more measured in his comments Wednesday, stating that “I remain steadfast about fairness in the system and access. Out of respect from my colleagues, I want to hold off on commenting about AQs and specific models.” Meanwhile, SMU Football HC Rhett Lashlee compared the format to basketball, explaining that “if we guaranteed spots based on the past … just look at basketball the last five years. Six years ago or so, the SEC gets three or four teams in. And now this year they get a record. But if this year’s NCAA tournament was predicted on five years ago, 10 of their schools would have been left out. It’s kind of hard to limit the future based on the past.” Miami (FL) Football HC Mario Cristobal adds: “Granting spots, that makes zero sense. Football has never been about gifting. It’s about earning.” (link)

More on this topic as ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips indicated he is open to supporting a College Football Playoff seeding model that removes first-round byes for four conference champions: “It just seems straight seeding may be the right thing for us to consider.” The Athletic’s Ralph Russo notes that Phillips has “stressed that changes to the format should be considered holistically, with seeding as part of a broader discussion about 2026 and beyond.” Russo also reports the Big 12 and ACC have “looked at 16-team models that would give each of those conferences three AQs to four for the SEC and Big Ten, a person involved in those internal discussions told The Athletic. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because those involved were not speaking publicly about potential models. … While significant changes could be on the horizon for 2026, including expansion of the field to 14 or 16 teams and conferences receiving multiple automatic bids, how the teams are seeded could be addressed for the upcoming season.” (link)

University of California regent/former Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers, during yesterday’s UC Board of Regents meeting in regards to the financial situation for UCLA athletics: “It’s like water’s coming in the boat and you’re trying to get it out, but how does this thing not sink? Or how can we help, I suppose?” The Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch explains that Myers was specifically inquiring about an “athletic department deficit that has ballooned to $219.5M after running in the red for six consecutive fiscal years, including a $51.8M shortfall in the 2024 fiscal year.” UCLA Vice Chancellor/CFO Stephen Agostini noted that “as many of you know, we have a fairly substantial financial challenge ahead of us. We are folding in the athletics deficits within that and will endeavor to address that. We are looking at other revenue streams…but it won’t be easy and given the volatility of the space, we’re hoping to stay abreast in an environment that changes almost monthly.” (link)

In addition to introducing six OTA-style days to the spring football schedule, ACC coaches “appear to be in lockstep with the AFCA's unanimously approved proposal to move the transfer portal window to Jan. 2-12, eliminating the spring eligibility period for transfers,” according to CBS’ Brandon Marcello. North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham: “The coaches feel strongly about getting to one portal.” (link)

UT Arlington has released a video in which Mavs AD Jon Fagg, Deputy AD/GM Ira Childress and other staff members describe how the department has prepared for a “new era” of college sports, and Fagg explains: “We feel like we have an advantage primarily because of the collaborative environment we have within the department. We work well with our coaches, we have trust, we are confident that we have recruiting strategies – we spent the last few years really talking about recruiting strategy in detail as well. The brand of UTA can be advanced through sports and that's something that hasn't been truly maximized, I think, at UTA. So, we’re trying to maximize the brand, push the brand forward. The most wide-reaching audience you can get is through college sports. Being as strategic as possible, investing in our sports, investing in the players that play our sports gives us a chance to be better. We’re ahead of schedule and so we think we’re going to get better faster than a lot of our competitors.” Full video. (link)

NFL Chief Media and Business Officer Brian Rolapp sits down with the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint to discuss the league’s growth strategy as it relates to reaching younger audiences and international audiences while also balancing broadcast with streaming. Rolapp notes that “broadcast television clearly has been and still is the bedrock of our media strategy. It’s been that way for 50 years, because our model is still driven by reach. That’s the religious principle. That being said, we do see all the changes that are happening in media, so achieving that reach is more complicated as people spend more and more time on digital platforms. … We certainly think a lot about youth. How do you build a relationship with them early? How do you find the platforms in which they spend their time? The sports and content that young people are embracing, they’re finding that in different ways than older demographics did. When you think about our international strategy, which is probably the biggest pool of untapped fan potential for the NFL, you need to think broader and differently as well.” While ad prices continue to increase, Rolapp acknowledges advertisers have expressed concerns about the economy, and “when you have situations like that, advertisers look for flexibility, and there’s a flight to quality. Sports has been a safe harbor generally, and the NFL specifically. I think one thing we can provide for any of our advertising partners is quality and viewership regardless of the macro environment.” Asked whether the NFL plans to expand its game days beyond Thursdays, Sundays and Mondays, Rolapp explains: “I wouldn’t think about it as a particular day that we want to make a permanent fixture. I think it’s more about, how do we bring more football to fans? We’re thinking much more globally about where we play and when we play, whether it’s the Christmas Day games that are distributed worldwide on Netflix—one partner, multiple countries—or it’s these games on Sunday morning that are international.” (link)
