Maryland has named Atlanta Braves SVP of Business Strategy James E. Smith as its next AD. UMD President Darryll Pines: "We are proud of the athletics tradition here at the University of Maryland and of the accomplishments of our coaches and student-athletes who represent the red, black, white and gold. As college athletics rapidly evolves, Jim brings valuable administrative and business experience, plus the energy, vision and passion to lead our athletics program to new levels of success and impact." Smith, who previously served as President/CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association, adds that he is “highly motivated to build upon excellence and lead Maryland forward in a dynamic and pivotal time for intercollegiate athletics, with a sharp focus on student-athlete health, well-being and academic success." TurnkeyZRG assisted the Terps on the search. (link)

Former Arizona State swimming student-athlete/lead House case plaintiff Grant House reacts to the most recent settlement revisions: “I think it shows the true nature of the NCAA. I think the lawyers continuously not acknowledging the request of Judge Claudia Wilken, and continuously over three processes now, with the final hearing included, not making any revisions or amendments really to her request of the roster limits shows how they value NCAA athletes and college athletes, and to amend the college roster limits, even just to grandfathering them. She’s not even asking them to eliminate them completely. It seems like she may want to, but just to have a compromise and middle ground, they’re not willing to budge at all, other than to most recently say, ‘Oh, we’re going to leave it up to the colleges.’” House realizes that many in the swimming community blame him for the upheaval surrounding the sport on the college level, but wants the public “to understand I’m not pulling the strings.” He adds: “I quite frankly don’t know these things that happen along the way. I’m not informed. I’m simply the lead plaintiff. I’m not making these decisions. I don’t wish this upon anyone. I wasn’t involved in the discussions for roster limits when it’s happening. I didn’t even know that was in the cards when these negotiations were going on, and so I’m really advocating for them.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “NIL Go” is being distributed to schools, including a two-page memo that details concepts, “much of what has been reported but now formalized in writing to school administrators.” The memo outlines the purpose of NIL Go along with its processes, framework, launch timeline, cost considerations and more. The Trump administration’s college sports commission is still moving forward despite former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban, the commission’s reported co-chair, casting doubt on the need for one. The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr., Chris Vannini and Justin Williams report the commission “is not official and still in the preliminary planning stages, according to sources briefed on its progress, but a source told The Athletic last week that Trump is expected to be ‘very engaged’ with the commission and views improving college sports as an issue of national importance. There is no timetable for when the commission might be formalized.” (link)

ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips joined ESPN/ACC Network’s David Hale and Andrea Adelson and says that when it comes to scheduling football games, the league has to have a conversation about potentially reconfiguring schedules that have already been set “because we have a new structure, as I just described, relative to viewership. So this will be a membership-driven exercise. I certainly will weigh in with my thoughts, but we have a little bit of work to do to see what that would look like and look at various maybe opportunities, options that we may want to consider versus just going along in the path that we have with the current – as you said – four or five years [of] schedules that already [have] been kind of earmarked.” Phillips says of former Alabama HC Nick Saban and Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell possibly co-chairing the Trump administration’s college sports commission: “I think they have the right compass and they have the right experience to help kind of put a group together that can maybe aid the president and the administration about how they can help college sports get settled down some and get this national standard and help us from a perspective of the ongoing onslaught of legal cases against the NCAA or individual schools, as well as this idea that these really are students. And, yes, they’re going to be compensated in a rev-share, but they have a completely different cadence than somebody that’s within an organized union, so to speak.” (link)

The Southern Conference has submitted a detailed assessment of the NCAA's proposed DI governance restructuring following the working group’s request for member feedback. Commissioner Michael Cross is sharing this document publicly to foster dialogue among conference leaders, athletic directors, and university presidents as the reform process moves forward and says: "While the NCAA's governance reform proposal represents a meaningful first step, it requires significant modifications to achieve its stated goals of creating a flexible, adaptable, and legally defensible structure. This first draft shows appropriate seriousness and thoughtfulness, but we need bolder action that truly decentralizes decision-making. By pushing eligibility, financial aid, and other key regulatory areas to conferences, we can better protect the NCAA from ongoing legal challenges while serving the diverse needs of all Division I institutions." Critical concerns highlighted in the SoCon’s assessment include the concentration of voting power without examining related financial liability, continued legal vulnerability through national eligibility and financial aid standards, representation imbalances affecting non-autonomy conferences, and insufficient decentralization despite stated goals. The Oregonian’s Ken Goe wonders whether the future of collegiate track & field is in jeopardy, and Virginia Director of Track & Field and Cross Country/Assoc. AD for Administration Vin Lananna says: “I hope I’m wrong. I’d love to be dead wrong on this. But I see no evidence that dissuades me from believing our sport is under siege. … If we don’t act now, we’ll never save it.” Even though the roster limits under the House settlement allow for men’s and women’s track scholarships to grow to 45 apiece, U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association CEO Sam Seemes says: “I don’t know of any Division I institution that is going to do that. … I know of one institution that has reduced men’s scholarships from track to 12.6 to six, and given the other six to baseball. That institution obviously wants to be more invested in baseball than men’s track and field.” Lots more. (link)

Playfly's relationship-first approach aligns with our values and their expertise and innovation make them an ideal long-term partner. Their focus on the future of college athletics, as well as their ability to leverage their resources to tell our story, will allow us to build deeper relationships with fans and sponsors while generating sustainable revenue to help support our student-athletes and programs." The projected timeline has the first championship slated for the spring of 2027. UNC Asheville has officially launched the public phase of its Centennial Campaign, which seeks to raise $100M in philanthropic support by the university's 100th anniversary in 2027. Athletics has been listed as one of the four key strategic pillars of the campaign. UNCA notes that the university recently received a landmark $5M gift from a local family — the largest gift in UNC Asheville's history— which will expand the Gateway Scholars Program endowment and provide wraparound support for first-generation students. A portion of the gift includes $1.8M directed to athletics, making it the largest gift in program history. The $1.8M commitment will be split, with $1M going to the Janet R. Cone Athletics Endowment to support the Dream Bigger. Achieve More strategic priorities and $800K being used to establish two fully funded endowed "Janet R. Cone Gateway Scholarships" for Bulldog student-athletes who are first-generation students. (link)

The Ohio House of Representatives yesterday voted 90-0 in favor of passing House Bill 184, which would prohibit NIL contracts from extending beyond a student’s time in college. NFLPA attorney Andrew Morris testified that “recently, we’ve seen exploitative NIL contracts where players sign away large percentages of their professional earnings (upwards of 20%) in exchange for relatively small sums in college. We also see contracts that hold an athlete’s NIL rights in perpetuity.” The bill will now be sent to the Senate. (link)

BYU officially introduced its new AD in Brian Santiago, who remarked that it was a “privilege to be [outgoing AD Tom Holmoe’s] wingman. I loved coming to work every day with him. Tom and I have a lot of similarities, but we’re also unique in our own approach. It’s one of the things that I always loved about Tom is that I always felt empowered, I always felt like I had a voice. … I feel like in every organization on Planet Earth, when there’s new leadership, our personalities, our vision, our dreams, our hopes, this is a new day. The president just talked about the ever-changing landscape of college athletics. And one of the things I’m really grateful for is, for especially the last three or four years, Tom’s really empowered me where I’ve kind of taken a deep drive into the world of NIL, rev-share, in the trenches with our coaches, with our student-athletes, working alongside some of our important stakeholders that have helped us along the way and kind of have some context there that is really going to help us as we jump into this new era. I think the one thing that I’ll do is make sure and protect the great things that we’ve established together. And when I say ‘we,’ I don’t just mean Tom and me. All these coaches in the room, every member of our athletic department, we’re united in this.” Full press conference. (link)

ACC Spring Meetings Wrap-up…
+ Warchant’s Ira Schoffel shares more from ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips’ remarks at the ACC Spring Meetings, noting that “when asked by Warchant on Wednesday what measures the ACC can even take to push for more [College Football Playoff] automatic qualifiers, Phillips again declined to elaborate. Phillips: “I don’t want to go into any more details on that. And it’s a really good question, but again, just in fairness of where we’re at as a group, we’ve all kind of committed to trying to work together. And I’ve made some comments in the past that I continue to stand by.” Without getting into specifics, Phillips said the ACC’s revenues for the most recent fiscal year will be a substantial increase from the $706.6M reported last May: “It’s very positive, and that’ll come out shortly. We continue to increase and grow. It’s a high-water mark for the league, in the history of the league.” That said, Phillips added: “I try not to sit still on any of that and try to continue to be creative in any ways we can generate and provide additional resources for our schools. But it’s on a really good path, and it’s going in the right direction.” Phillips on President Trump’s college sports commission: “I’m hopeful that that can be a positive to an end result that gets us a standardized law across the country with NIL – whether it’s a skinny protection or some type of legal protection from the ongoing onslaught of legal cases against the NCAA and college sports. And that there’s the reaffirmation that these are students. Though compensated, they’re students.” (link)
+ The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel puts a bow on the meetings, during which Virginia Tech AD Whit Babcock said of the detente with Florida State and Clemson: “There’s certainly some residual effect, but it’s nice not to have the public brand damage from those lawsuits. The league is better with Clemson and Florida State in it.” Babcock also commented on potential College Football Playoff formats: “Certainly, I and we are opposed to an invitational playoff. I know of no other league that predetermines slots. We are going through the House (antitrust) case, and every league wants more structure, and then to set off a playoff structure that isn’t a level playing field doesn’t make much sense. Past performance is in the past. … The reason we went to an expanded playoff was to prove it on the field, and I hope the conversation reroutes from the (multiple) automatic slots. … I don’t believe ESPN wants a pre-baked [CFP]. I don’t believe the general public does. Again, past performance from those two leagues has been great, and we need to improve our standing. But setting the course for the future based on the past doesn’t make a lot of sense.” (link)
+ More from Amelia Island, where Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reports Phillips said of North Carolina’s hire of Football HC Bill Belichick: [ESPN] ran to us, before we could even run to them [about televising more UNC games]. It's a great thing for the ACC, a great thing for North Carolina and we are all following the massive coverage that Coach Belichick draws.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was on The Paul Finebaum Show yesterday & provided updated thoughts on key industry items. On the House settlement: “Our need is for a decision, and then a lot of our time in Destin will be filled with instruction and orientation with service providers, but also with our staff, talking through how implementation will work. That’s way inside baseball … but that’s the work that occupies an enormous amount of time across all the conferences involved in this litigation.” As for College Football Playoff allocations & seeding, as well as future SEC Football scheduling strategy: “So for us, Texas went from No. 3 to No. 5. Tennessee went from hosting to not hosting. It’s difficult to explain and defend that decision-making. Not to mention that group that’s left out. The way you break it down is, we have the top four spots in the 12-team Playoff that matter. Then, we have the next four, those are home games, the next four who are in, and the next four who are out. That’s driven a lot of conversation. As we think about our schedule, we’re governed by playoff decisions, when you think about it. Do you want to play — you just heard [Georgia Football HC] Kirby [Smart] talking about the rigor of our eight-game schedule, plus the championship game, but the creative thinking around play-ins? That’s bubbled up in our conversation, that championship Saturday, maybe having some more games that might create more hope. I think it’s a really interesting concept, but we need some clarity around what’s going to happen with the college football playoff format. So, there’s a lot of entanglements. A lot of important issues. A lot of opportunity, if we manage this properly.” More from On3. (link, link)

Louisville will likely move forward with paying student-athletes even if U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken rejects the House settlement, according to Cardinals AD Josh Heird, who says: “That's probably the path we would go down. Just from the standpoint of the more control you can have of the situation, the better. It's been a little bit disjointed with outside entities, collectives, doing things. So I would presume that's the road we would go down.” Heird also says the settlement’s roster limits will have “little to no impact” because the Cards’ rosters are “relatively small by comparison with other peer institutions.” Asked whether UL could implement an LLC model similar to that of Kentucky’s, Heird responds: “With everything going on around college athletics, it's a good time to take a step back and observe what others are doing. And, as I've told our staff, we don't need to be out in front on anything that we're doing. Let’s let the landscape evolve a little bit, look at the pros and cons of what others are doing and what makes the most sense for us. And then once we feel like we have the information we need to make a decision, we'll make a decision.” (link)

Georgia Tech AD J Batt sits down with former Seattle Mariners/Texas Rangers/New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and Bloomberg’s Jason Kelly to discuss the new college landscape and how Georgia Tech plans to stand out. When it comes to recruiting talent and raising funds, Batt explains: “I think the most important thing is to value and constantly work on genuine relationships. I think it’s often forgotten [in], ‘My value prop or my business plan is so good that of course someone's going to buy this or invest in this or give us money because, my goodness, we're winning games or we want to win games or whatever it might be.’ People give to people. People invest in people. And so being available, being part of that, investing in those relationships so that when the time comes for that ask it's not the first thing you’ve heard of them. It’s important to be there.” Batt believes that as college sports moves into its next era “I think what you will see is we’re going to go back to a place that an opportunity to come to a place like Georgia Tech and graduate with that degree, that’s going to matter more than maybe it has in the past three, four, five years.” (link)

Mississippi State has received a $1M gift from a “dedicated family in Jackson, Mississippi,” to support the Billy W. Howard Sr. Indoor Practice Facility. Bulldogs AD Zac Selmon: “This family has been 'all in' from my first days here in Starkville and we are incredibly thankful they have reinforced their commitment once again. The belief in our vision from dedicated supporters like this family fuels our continued pursuit of elevating our football program to new heights." (link)

Charlotte has released renderings of its planned expansion to Jerry Richardson Stadium. The groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the expansion is set for August 27. 49ers AD Mike Hill: “Over the next two seasons, with as little interruption to the game day experience as possible, our project team will be hard at work delivering a high-end, premium space and more seating capacity for Niner Nation.” Have a look at the plans.
