San Diego State AD Wicker has been named SBJ’s AD of the Year. From SBJ’s release: “It’s not often that an athletic director has an opportunity to build a football stadium from the ground up, but that’s exactly what J.D. Wicker has been doing at San Diego State. Wicker led a potentially thorny process to get Snapdragon Stadium to the finish line last season, bringing together the city of San Diego, the university and the athletics department in a way that kept the $310M project on budget and on time for a 2022 opening.” (link)

Here’s some more data from the NCAA’s FY21 tax forms: The association ended FY21 $78.3M in the black after ending FY20 with a $51M deficit. Additionally, the NCAA paid four law firms a total of more than $13.85M for the year, and the expenses report indicates it paid $52.45M in legal services fees. Also, the association brought in $93M in insurance recovery revenue, spent $470K on lobbying, ended the year with $326M in publicly traded securities (down from $405M at the beginning of the year) and $337.8M in other securities (up from $182.8M at the beginning of the year). Further data shows the NCAA secured $16.68M in bank loans and ended the fiscal year with $516.1M in endowment funds, marking the highest total in the last five years, and brought in $5.78M from the NIT. Here’s the full filing. (link)

Florida State AD Alford continues to be in the headlines, tells the Orlando Sentinel’s Murschel that in addition to success initiatives, “I believe the media value should also be changed and divided differently, and right now, that’s not being looked at.” Alford also agrees with ACC Commissioner Phillips’ that the league is unified and adds: “Everybody’s on the same page regarding looking and trying to find a solution to the revenue gap. Now what’s that going to be? I’m anxious to see what solution will come from our meetings and discussions. As far as Florida State goes, we’ll continue to monitor the collegiate landscape and continue to be good partners within the conference and work with the conference to find a solution and keep trying to find solutions for revenue opportunities.” Additionally, Alford confirms FSU has examined the league’s GOR because “with the collegiate landscape changing daily like it is, we’ve got to make sure we’re prepared and we have all of our options. I’m a big decision tree guy and we have a decision tree of all our options.” (link)

Bellarmine faculty passed a resolution of no confidence in President Donovan, arguing the move to DI is pulling money from academics and that an academic restructuring plan waters down the curriculum. Donovan tells the Courier-Journal’s Aulbach that the academic restructuring will attract new students and better position the university. “I have great confidence in the institution, and I have great confidence in the faculty. You try not to take things personally. There were decisions made to try to advance the institution. But none of it had to do with the quality of the faculty in a negative way.” (link)

Nebraska regent Clare discusses the proposal to move athletics directly under the purview of President Carter, explaining that it’s not a response to the way the department is being run, but rather to capitalize on Carter’s strengths. “Right now, we have a president that’s got tremendous respect nationally. I think it’s going to help the NCAA because he will be able to provide that leadership.” Clare also notes Chancellor-Elect Bennett has been briefed on the proposed change, and if he's hired following a 30-day waiting period, would still be involved with decisions made at Husker Athletics. “But Ted’s going to be the guy in charge.” (link)

The New York Post’s Marchand reports ESPN “has had no substantive talks with the Pac-12 in a while. The only way I see ESPN doing a deal is if the Pac-12 does something very creative, and when you say the word ‘creative’…that means less expensive, which does not solve the Pac-12’s problem. They need to get the money, and they need to have the exposure. I do not believe they are going to get that at ESPN. Do things change over time? That’s always possible, I never would totally close the door, but I don’t see that. … They’ll get a deal, I just don’t see where that is at this point.” Meanwhile, SBJ’s Ourand says of the Big Ten’s current media rights hiccup: “It does appear to be a little bit of chaos, but I can’t emphasize enough the deals are going to get done. NBC is going to have a primetime series with the Big Ten, CBS is going to have their late afternoon, and Fox is going to have their noon. There’s still some horse-trading going on around that, that’s very unusual, but this does not put the deal in jeopardy at all.” (link)

The Drake Group Education Fund Executive Director Sommer cites Opendorse data which found that 77% of all NIL funding is going to male athletes while less than 35% of all collectives provide any resources to female student-athletes whatsoever. “This staggering exclusion, which underlies both logic and law, highlights the need for reform—either legislative or legal—to bring NIL marketing and promotion in compliance with Title IX.” As such, The Drake Group recently sent a letter to the Office of Civil Rights stating: “We do not write to suggest that OCR stem this flow of cash to college athletes, but rather to alert OCR that this cash is, with the blessing and/or cooperation of the 1000-plus universities in the NCAA, flowing predominantly to men. Such inequitable financial aid, treatment and benefits provided to men are a violation of Title IX.” Sommer goes on to submit that without a national standard, “one easy reform that can be made right now at the state or institutional level is to simply require that all collectives provide funding and outreach to women athletes and teams. Not only would these changes respect Title IX, but they would be good business—for the schools and the athletes.” Full op-ed. (link)

Remy left the NCAA to become Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the Biden administration, a position he has since left. Berkowitz: “According to a statement from the NCAA, the payment was made under a ‘separation agreement [that] was entered into by the employee and the former president of the NCAA,’ Mark Emmert, although the statement also says that the NCAA Board of Governors’ Executive Committee determines NCAA executive salaries. … Remy’s total compensation for 2021 was more than $3.6M, which also included just under $860K in base salary for the partial year worked for the association and nearly $50K in bonus pay.” Berkowitz also reports Emmert was credited with nearly $3.3M in total compensation for the 2022 calendar year, including nearly $2.8M in base salary and nearly $83K in bonus pay. The ACC has endorsed a success initiative that will take effect with the 2024-25 season. Per the league’s release, the “specifics of the plan are in progress and will be solidified in the coming months. Under this initiative, the implementation of the success incentives will come solely from the performance of teams in revenue generating postseason competition. All other revenues will continue to be equally shared as currently outlined.” ACC Board of Directors Chair/Duke President Price: “The ACC Board of Directors continues to be committed to exploring all potential opportunities that will result in additional revenues and resources for the conference. Today’s decision provides a path to reward athletic success while also distributing additional revenue to the full membership.” (link); The ACC has partnered with USCAH to provide comprehensive healthcare consultation and resources for all 15 league members. Iowa State AD Pollard during a recent Cyclone Caravan stop maintained that he’s never felt better about the strength of the Big 12. “I’ve done this for 18 years. Quite frankly, for 16 1/2 years, I still have the scars, the scabs, the bruises from the Big 12 being the conference that was ready to implode. … I don’t wish ill will upon any of my peers. But it is fascinating to hear, not only the Pac-12 problems, but now the ACC has got their own Groundhog Day. It reminds me of the Big 12 from 2010-12. Then even to hear the latest news out of the Big Ten about the Fox and NBC challenges, for once the Big 12 is not having issues. So it’s kind of refreshing.” (link)

Memphis reported 8,397 men’s basketball season tickets sold last season, the fewest since HC Hardaway took over, and a YoY decrease of 2,913 (or 25.7%). Tigers AD Veatch notes several factors could have contributed to the decline, including overall industry-wide trends and a 15% YoY increase in tickets scanned. Five games at FedExForum during the 2022-23 season saw a higher number of tickets scanned than season tickets sold: Houston (13,302), Ole Miss (10,720), Tulane (8,824), Cincinnati (8,673) and Texas A&M (8,554). Another contributing factor, according to Memphis officials, was the department’s decision to discontinue the sale of more than 1,500 season tickets to secondary market buyers. Tigers Executive Assoc. AD for Administration Adams: “We had a lot of brokers, for lack of a better term, buying season tickets who would then sell them. We cut that out just to have a little bit more control of the market.” Overall, Veatch says: “It’s a concern, but there aren’t alarms going off. … Habits and patterns are changing. You just have to adjust the product and how you sell it. We’re just going to have to look at it differently and take a different approach.” (link)

+ The NCAA has released the data from its sports gambling survey, which included responses from 3,527 individuals aged 18-22 to “better understand the prevalence of various sports wagering behaviors, as well as how attitudes toward wagering are being impacted by external forces, such as advertising. Opinion Diagnostics conducted the survey by using a national online panel that mirrored the total population of that age group and included both college students and young adults not attending college.” Overall, 58% of respondents indicated they participated in at least one sports betting activity. Meanwhile, 67% of students living on campus “are bettors and tend to bet at a higher frequency. 41% of college students who bet on sports have placed a bet on their school's teams and 35% have used a student bookmaker.” 63% of respondents say they recall seeing sports gambling ads with 58% noting they are more likely to gamble after seeing the ads. As it relates to problem gambling, with 16% having engaged in at least one risky behavior and 6% report that they have previously lost more than $500 on sports betting in a single day. 70% of these risky gamblers believe consistent sports gambling will increase their monetary earnings. More from the NCAA. (link)
+ With the prevalence of gambling appearing to increase, NCAA AVP of Enforcement Duncan says cases are relatively easy to investigate. “There’s usually a pretty clear paper trail” left by IP addresses, time stamps and other data that comes with electronic wagering. “We can figure out who is betting, when, how much they’re wagering and how often.” In addition to gambling, Duncan says NIL-related cases are spiking. “We get tips every day. We’ve got a number of cases we’re working through—more than half [the current caseload]. Some are at the preliminary stage, some are at the back end, getting to the charging stage.” (link)
