ESPN’s Pete Thamel via sources: “The power four commissioners met again today in person to primarily discuss the future of the College Football Playoff. They discussed new 16-team models, the second such meeting of the four in the last nine days. They met today in Charlotte and on May 8 in NYC. (Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti didn't attend in person today. He was virtual because he's in California for the Big Ten meetings that start tomorrow.)” (link)

The Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen writes on Arizona AD Desiree Reed-Francois’ first year leading the Wildcats: “The ever-aggressive Reed-Francois has established a 24/7, day-to-day pace that few in the industry could match, and frankly, one that Arizona desperately needed. In the last month, she attended 19 of the 22 stops on the ‘Bear Down Takeover,’ tour — from Douglas and Nogales to Scottsdale and Los Angeles — as well as spending time in Washington D.C. in her role as one of the 10 members of the newly formed NCAA ‘transition team,’ whose primary responsibility is to create a system for managing and enforcing the compensation of student-athletes in Division I sports. She goes to lunch with five student-athletes per month, hoping to get to know what the athletic department can do to make their experience more productive. She established an Assistant Coaches Academy for about 40 assistant coaches, helping to prepare them to be head coaches. She had a job fair for student-athletes at which about 50 Tucson firms were represented.” Reed-Francois also tells Hansen that the new Arizona Sports Enterprises is at 108% of projected income & that the Wildcats are good to go on the $20M+ needed to fund full revenue sharing. Texas AD Chris Del Conte indicates the Longhorns have “removed over 4,000 (football) tickets that were held by brokers and put back into the system to sell to our fans and donors.” More as Del Conte notes via X that his department is “also monitoring all accounts that are sold to brokers and will reallocate to those on the waiting list.” (link)

Drake AD Brian Hardin tells The Gazette’s John Steppe that while working under former Marquette AD Bill Scholl, “we were talking about if I were to leave to become an AD somewhere, what would that look like? The first thing he said is "make sure that you’ve got a president who understands the role of athletics and is supportive of that.” Hardin says that at Drake, he has precisely that. “We’ve got great institutional alignment from our board of trustees, to our president, to our senior leadership of athletics and down through our head coaches. You got to have all those groups on the same page to make your department go from one spot to another.” That solid foundation, Hardin continues, has enabled the Bulldogs to persevere, especially in men’s basketball, which has experienced multiple HC changes in recent years. “We’ve surrounded that program with the right people and the right amount of resources that, when we’ve lost a player or a coach, we’ve been able to try to go out there and replace it and try to keep this going in the right direction. … I do think that there is a space for us similar to what Saint Mary’s has carved out in the West Coast, what Gonzaga has carved out in the Northwest. I think there’s a space for Drake to kind of fill that void in the Midwest.” In discussing finances more concretely, Hardin explains: “Those three areas – both basketballs and Relays – drive significant revenue back to our department. So we need to do what we can to put those in a position to be successful. … That’s the rising tide that lifts all the boats in our department.” More. (link)

The Commercial Appeal’s Jonah Dylan has data on the American’s 2024 fiscal year performance, headlined by total revenue of $143.89M, which was up roughly $23M year-over-year, thanks in part to SMU’s $25M exit fee. Per member payouts ranged from Memphis at $11M down to Wichita State at $3.3M. Tulane ($10.8M), SMU ($10.4M) & USF ($10.3M) were the only other departments with a distribution of $10M or more. (link)

Arkansas has rolled out its new Razorback Raffle as Hogs AD Hunter Yurachek notes: “Our plan moving forward is we are going to have a different raffle for every football game home and/or away that fans can participate beginning early in the week through the fourth quarter of the football game. We’ll do the same for men’s basketball. We’ll repeat the same cycle for baseball for all the weekend series.” The raffle is a 50/50 split & new revenue stream for the Razorbacks, which generated $141,320 during this weekend’s baseball series against Tennessee (and $141,320 for the Connor family who were the inaugural winners). Sticking in the SEC, Tennessee’s contract with Nike expires on June 30, 2026, and the Knoxville News Sentinel’s Adam Sparks notes that “if Nike wants to remain UT’s apparel provider, it will get a fair shot. Typically in these deals, the existing provider gets the last opportunity to match the highest bid. But that price could skyrocket now that the Vols are on the open market.” It’s possible, Sparks explains, that the Vols could switch back to Adidas: “Traditionally, athletes have considered the apparel brand when choosing a school. In fact, a decade ago, it was common for a recruit to have that as a top priority, and Nike was a popular choice. But in the NIL era, the school’s apparel brand has slid down that priority list in recent years. The highest priority is now player pay, and by a wide margin. Athletes want to know how much money they can earn in NIL and direct school-to-player pay, once revenue sharing begins as early as July. If Adidas, for example, can offer UT a much higher payout, it would help fund a more talented roster. It’s certainly something to consider in the player-pay era of college sports.” Furthermore, Sparks notes UT “could be prioritized and promoted as a premier partner of another brand, and its athletes would benefit from it. … Imagine a Tennessee star player being part of national campaign similar to an NFL or NBA player. Don't underestimate that factor in UT's negotiations and ultimate decision in choosing an apparel partner.” (link)

Wake Forest AD John Currie checks in From the Quad and shares his thoughts on the decision to move to an 18-game hoops slate: “I believe this decision is the right one for Wake Forest and the ACC as the move to 18 conference games opens two additional opportunities each season for the Deacs to schedule high-quality opponents with strong NET rankings—giving us a better chance to bolster our NCAA Tournament resume. In addition to our nine home ACC games, it will also be our turn to host our ACC-SEC Challenge in the Joel this season, and we'll be in Detroit on Nov. 11 looking to knock off reigning B1G Champion Michigan for the second-straight season. Led by Deputy AD Lindsey Babcock, we are closing in on some really exciting marquee neutral site match-ups that will both challenge our student-athletes and provide great opportunities for Deacon fans.” (link)

USA Today’s Matt Hayes makes the case for Florida State’s push to implement success initiatives: “Why should the Seminoles spend top dollar on facilities and recruiting budgets, and do everything within their power to field a nationally competitive team, and receive the same media rights payout as other programs in the ACC who aren’t invested in getting better and spending money to make money? Why should Florida State, geographically surrounded by SEC recruiting heavyweights – Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Auburn – eventually making 50-60% more in media rights money, be forced to take the eventual fiscal undoing? You can argue about the process, and if its legal wrangling with the ACC hurt relationships with the league (of course it did). But you can’t argue with survival mode.” If FSU reaches certain viewership thresholds, Hayes notes the Seminoles (and Clemson and any other ACC team) could earn nearly $60M annually in media rights revenue. That's the clearest path to financial security ― not hoping for a new football division in 2030 when Florida State is now allowed to leave the ACC with a decreased buyout, or hoping ESPN will restructure a better deal after 2036. The money is there for the taking now. Go get it.” (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale last week went before the Ohio House Workforce and Higher Education Committee to emphasize the importance of collective bargaining for college athletes. Cavale was joined by other proponents of House Bill 184, the so-called Marvin Harrison Jr. Bill, which seeks to protect college athletes from exploitative contracts and strengthen their rights, and remarked: “We [college sports participants] don’t have uniform contracts like they do in the NFL. We don’t have agent certifications and regulations like we do in the NFL. We also don’t have free agency rules and many other rules that need to be set, and have been set really well and effectively, in the great business that the NFL is. And the reason is, is because we don’t have a partnership between the players in the schools and college athletics. And that’s the most sustainable way to set rules.” When referring to the upcoming enforcement entity backed by the NCAA, Cavale noted that this was an opportunity to create collective bargaining at the college level. “That entity is a good example of an entity that schools could be members of to collectively negotiate all these rules with the athletes. We’ve built the vehicle– Athletes.org– for the athletes to be able to negotiate these rules, but the schools still have to figure out who their vehicle is. And once they do, there’s a possibility to bring structure to all of college athletics.” (link)

From a Business North Carolina event yesterday, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham said the Tar Heels have sold out of their 20,000 Football season tickets, which includes raising prices by roughly 25% with momentum behind first-year HC Bill Belichick. On the House settlement: “The sooner we start [under the settlement], the better.” Cunningham also noted a focus on endowing sports programs through donations or producing exclusive content to sell to fans as additional revenue drivers, but still believes there will be a need for institutional support in order to add the $20.5M+ needed for revenue sharing. More from Axios Raleigh’s Zachery Eanes. (link)

Even with the potential of an expanded College Football Playoff, Oregon AD Rob Mullens points to the need for a compelling regular season on the Unafraid Show podcast. Mullens: “At the end of the day, conference media revenue is extremely important. But ticket revenue and the donations tied to the ticket revenue and the passion and connection with your fans is extremely important as well. [...] So, you know, in the last 15 years, we've had, we've played a regional FCS opponent which in our region tends to be a really good FCS team. We've played a group of five opponent again, which in our region, tends to be a really good group of five team. And then we've done a home and home with other Power 4, you know, we've got Oklahoma State next year. We played Boise [State] last year. We've got Baylor in the future. I think our formula will still stay the same. Because now, you really have to win your conference to prove it. You still want the regular season to be relevant.” (link)

Tennessee “now has the most athlete-friendly NIL law,” according to Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter, who notes it “appears to prohibit all of the House settlement’s limits on NIL comp (salary cap, collective restrictions, etc.) unless they’re part of a federal law, valid court order, or determined to be exempt from antitrust law.” Notably, from the bill, which Winter notes became effective immediately on May 1, an “institution’s athletic association shall not: interfere with, prohibit, restrict, or otherwise adversely affect an intercollegiate athlete's ability to earn compensation, seek representation, perform diligence, or otherwise participate in an activity described in§ 49-7-2802 and shall not otherwise impact an intercollegiate athlete's eligibility or full participation in intercollegiate athletic events; interfere with, prohibit, restrict, or otherwise punish an institution and its affiliated foundation for participating in an activity described in § 49-7-2802; threaten, condition, or cause an institution or a governing body of this state to repeal any state law and suffer any detrimental harm, economic or otherwise, in order to participate in such association and enjoy its full rights of membership or otherwise thereunder; or violate § 49-7-2802(b)(4); unless, in each case, this part is invalidated or rendered unenforceable by operation of law. The attorney general and reporter may bring any appropriate action or proceeding against an institution's athletic association in any court of competent jurisdiction pursuant to this part.” (link); Full bill. In the latest episode of The Career Hustle, Connect's Kristen Eargle is joined by Ole Miss Senior Deputy AD for External Relations and Business Development Dr. Eric Wood, who elaborates on his decision to leave the Louisiana Tech AD role for his current position in Oxford. During his career, Wood says he’s taken “calculated risks” with each move, adding: “I did realize it was a lot harder from the internal side of the house, from the student-athlete services side of the house to get at least a G5 or Power 4 AD job. … It was during my time representing Conference USA on the Football Oversight Committee – and I was the representative on the DI Council – over those two or three years that I had the opportunity to serve in that role, I just saw where the shift was moving. And while I’m not in any rush, the ultimate goal is to become a Power 4 AD at some point in the future. … I thought this would be the best position for my career. But here’s the other thing. I wasn’t going to go just anywhere. And [Rebels AD] Keith Carter is one of the best human beings, he’s at his alma mater, and I thought if I’m not going to lead my own department, I want to work for somebody that I believe in.” Lots more on Connect.
