The NCAA and defendant conferences have filed their reply in support of roster limit changes in which they argue: “All student-athletes on a roster during the current season (the 2024-25 Academic Year) who were or would have been removed from a roster because of the implementation of roster limits will not count against any school’s roster for the duration of their eligibility; all newly incoming student-athletes who were assured of a roster spot by a Member Institution, and then told they no longer had a roster spot because of the implementation of roster limits, will not count against any school’s roster for the duration of their eligibility; schools participating in the Pool structure will be required to prepare lists of the student-athletes falling in these two groups, called ‘Designated Student-Athletes,’ in good faith with copies of the lists going to Class Counsel; and Designated Student-Athletes will not count against roster limits wherever they go, e.g. if they transfer to another Member Institution; and Designated Student-Athletes will always have the opportunity to return to the school that had them on a roster, or assured them of a roster spot, regardless of NCAA rules. These features ensure that no class members ‘will be harmed’ by the implementation of the settlement’s roster limits provisions…because the class members identified by the Court are in the same position as prior to the settlement’s announcement.” Full response. Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban met today with Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the “commission will continue developing, with Saban included. Further direction from the White House is expected. White House leaders have begun pooling recommendations for commission membership from those at the power conferences, NCAA and athlete groups. Membership is expected to be 10 people or less with a goal of political and cultural diversity.” (link)

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) mentioned AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl as a potential addition to the presidential commission on college sports, and Bohl tells CBS’ John Talty and Richard Johnson: "The only thing that I can say is that the AFCA, we've had significant conversations with what I believe are the stakeholders in college football and our perspective and my perspective is that we listen to all the coaches and we certainly have some insight that I think is unique. But as far as the formulation of the commission, I'm not aware that anything has been set in stone. I've had dialogue, but there's not been anybody from that commission to say, 'Hey Craig, we want you on here.' I've had a dialogue. I just don't know where it's all at. … I know [President Trump] is a big college football fan. I do know he cares, and I do know that Coach Saban cares. I think it's imperative that each lane, whether it's a commissioner, whether it's college presidents, whether it's coaches or student athletes or some members of Congress, that everybody has an opportunity to engage and clarify and offer their perspective on a pathway forward." Tuberville believes the key to the commission is not to overcrowd it, though he acknowledges that even though his role with the commission is informal, he’s fielded a lot of interest and adds: "I think you get people involved who are looking at it every day. Not just some weekend person. We're going to need player involvement, men and women. One thing that President Trump says on my watch is: 'We're not losing women's sports, we're not losing Title IX.'" As far as what the commission should seek to accomplish, Tuberville notes there are several areas that could be addressed, but “the one thing we have to do – and I told the president this – the one thing we can do is we can get all 50 states doing the same thing." USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports that “with the ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 providing their new returns this week in response to requests from USA Today Sports, and the Big Ten and SEC having done so previously, the combined revenue tally for fiscal 2024 was nearly $3.54B, compared to a little more than $3.55B for fiscal 2023. Berkowitz breaks down the Pac-12, ACC and Big 12’s finances, starting with the Pac-12, which brought in $566.6M in revenue during FY24. The per-school payout was $30.15M for the 10 other than Oregon State and Washington State and $46.6M for Oregon State and Washington State. Overall average for the 12 schools: $32.9M, fifth among Power Five. Former Commissioner George Kliavkoff was credited with nearly $3.7M in total compensation for the 2023 calendar year. The ACC generated $711.4M in revenue, third among Power Five. Per-school payouts ranged from $43.1M to $46.4M, except for Notre Dame, which received $20.7M. Commissioner Jim Phillips was credited with nearly $4.1M in total compensation, including almost $3.95M in base compensation. The base amount represents a roughly 50% increase over his total for the 2022 calendar year. The Big 12 reported revenue of $493.8M, fourth among Power Five. Per school payouts ranged from $37.8M to $42.1M for the schools other than newcomers BYU, Houston, UCF and Cincinnati, which averaged about $20M apiece. Commissioner Brett Yormark earned $4.4M, including just over $2.5M categorized as base pay and $1.25M in bonus pay. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit notes the Pac-12 reported spending $11.8M in legal fees during FY24, which is “believed to be the highest amount ever disclosed by a collegiate athletic conference. Those expenditures covered a range of courtroom battles, including athlete antitrust lawsuits, internal governance disputes and the fallout from the league’s contraction from 12 to just two remaining members. More than half of those legal fees went to the San Francisco office of Cooley LLP.” Libit also notes the conference spent $57.3M on salaries, compensation and employee benefits in FY24, up significantly from $40.3M the previous fiscal year. “The sharp increase was largely due to a sweeping organizational overhaul, which included retention bonuses and severance payouts. The conference staff shrank from roughly 190 employees – including those at the now-defunct Pac-12 Networks – to around 30. … Aside from lawyers, a significant portion of the league’s independent contracting expenses in FY24 stemmed from the development of the conference’s new production facility in San Ramon, Calif. The Pac-12 reported spending $25M across three firms for construction work related to the project.” (link)
|
The ACC reported $12.3M in outside legal expenses during FY24, up 70.8% YoY and a more than 4x increase over the last four years, according to The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel, who notes that “San Francisco-based Latham & Watkins ($2.8M) and Greensboro, North Carolina-based Fox Rothschild ($1.3M) were the league’s priciest outside representation, the escalating costs also reflecting the power conferences defending themselves in multiple antitrust lawsuits brought by former athletes, most prominently the House case. Teel also points out the conference hired its first full-time general counsel, Pearlynn Houck, in 2023. “Her compensation was $449,867, bringing the conference’s total legal costs to nearly $12.8M. For context: The SEC’s tax return listed $4.3M in outside legal expenses, plus $735,313 in pay for associate commissioner for legal affairs William King. According to Sportico, the Big Ten reported $7M in outside legal expenses and paid in-house counsel Anil Gollahalli $518K.” (link)

The Georgia Board of Regents has approved renovations to Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium with a budget of $70M. The project will “add premium seating areas on the west sideline, diversified premium seating products that enable tiered experiences and chairback seating to the entire east and west sidelines to elevate the game day experience.” Specifically, the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Chad Bishop notes the west sideline components “include the creation of a new premium level, as well as replacing the existing president’s lounge and entry lobby within the Bill Moore Student Success Center with a Founder’s Club. The Founder’s Club (7,700 square feet) will feature 124 seats at midfield. Sixteen new suites will be built and 16 existing suites will be renovated. On the east sideline, 15 existing suites will be renovated along with the creation of a field club lounge (20,000 square feet) and speakeasy-style club (3,250 square feet). In the north end zone, 10 existing suites will be updated and three suites on the upper level of the Wardlaw Building will be renovated. Tech will also relocate its press operations, as well as booths for security, radio broadcasts and statistics, to the north end zone.” (link)

Hawaii President Wendy Hensel says the Rainbow Warriors’ AD search is “progressing well” and has a “robust pool of applicants,” adding: “We are still on track to complete this hire in the summer, although, again, our priority will always be finding the right person. So, if it takes a little bit longer, we will take that time.” In addition to the current selection committee, Hensel says UH has formed a “small, internal advisory committee to give some internal feedback for the finalists, including student-athletes, coaching staff and faculty. This committee will also have an opportunity to meet with our finalists and give us feedback before that final decision is made. We appreciate the comments on the last board of regents meeting from Regent Abercrombie and others about the importance of establishing a competitive compensation level to attract the right candidate. We are continuing to work to identify what that looks like but want to give you an initial impression that we are looking to a salary range somewhere in the range of $375K to $500K as a starting salary, some relocation expenses if the individual is out of state and the potential for a bonus and retention structure.” (link); For those wanting to lead the Rainbow Warriors, the D1.dossier for the position is available. Maryland’s selection of Atlanta Braves SVP of Business Strategy Jim Smith as its new AD is emblematic of a new skill set universities are seeking when filling the role, according to Puck’s John Ourand, who points out the Terps “didn’t simply poach an executive from the world of professional sports. Almost all the finalists were senior business leaders, including senior vice president of NBC Sports digital and emerging businesses Damon Phillips, and senior Roc Nation executive Michael Yormark, the identical twin brother of Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark. In fact, only one of the final four candidates came from the college ranks – Maryland’s interim athletic director, Colleen Sorem. As recently as a few years ago, any list of A.D. candidates would have been dominated by college sports administrators. This started to change two years ago, however, when Notre Dame brought in Pete Bevacqua from NBC Sports as its new AD. Several people in the college sports universe told me that they see Maryland’s talent search as part of the same trend. … It’s a microcosm of the larger professionalization of college sports, of course.” Ourand adds, he’s told by one source: “We’re seeing a lot of donor fatigue. Colleges now need money every month for NIL, and it’s not sustainable. The donors are throwing up their hands, saying, ‘It’s okay to be asked for money for a capital project every couple of years, but I don’t want to be asked every month.’” (link)

With the AD chair open in Cookeville, FootballScoop’s John Brice profiles Tennessee Tech President Phil Oldham and Football HC Bobby Wilder on how their alignment serves the entire athletic department, and Wilder notes: “We just won in football, first winning season since the president got here, and women’s soccer won, and we’ve got a lot of sports that are winning because the president funds this at, I believe, the highest or near-highest level in the OVC. I told President Oldham that we’re chasing North Dakota State, and he’s trying to fund me like North Dakota State. There’s a chance for real synergy with the president and our next AD. I believe the right AD can turn this opportunity into a Power Four or Group of Five AD [job].” Wilder goes on to remark that “I’ve been doing this for 34 years, I’ve never worked for a president that sees the entire chess board. And what I mean by that, he recognizes what needs to happen for the university, he recognizes growth for the university, he’s been here 12 years, he’s done $750M in projects on campus in that time. … As far as football and athletics, he looks at athletics as the front porch to the mansion.” Wilder goes on to explain that Oldham is committed to NIL and Alston payments, and “the goal is that by the 2026 season that we’re top five in the country in every category. We want to be a top five FCS-funded program and President Oldham shares that vision.” (link)

Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich finds that the “most striking part of [Deloitte’s NIL Go] memo is the part that says the clearinghouse won't block players' NIL deals. If a deal is flagged by the clearinghouse as pay-for-play, the athlete can still accept it… just with the understanding there's a risk of eligibility concerns.” Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter responds: “A good point made here by Amanda. If an athlete deal with an associated entity isn’t cleared by Deloitte the athlete can still move forward with the deal. And it’s then up to schools/NCAA/the new enforcement entity to say they’re ineligible. Which is when lawsuits will start.” Prominent sports attorney Tom Mars adds: “Since almost every NIL contract has a confidentiality clause for competitive reasons, I wonder how anyone thinks they can induce an athlete to breach their contract so that Deloitte can review it without exposing themselves to a lawsuit for tortious interference with a contract.” To which Winter replies: “Good question. If a confidentiality clause in a college athlete’s NIL agreement doesn’t provide an exception for the athlete to disclose it to a school or the enforcement entity, the athlete will be required to breach the contract.” (link, link, link)

Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly covers a lot of ground on the Big Mountain podcast, including how the league is approaching expansion. Butterly explains he is a proponent of FBS splitting away from the NCAA “and trying to get more realistic, try to help our student-athletes across the country, no matter what institution they play at, to get a little bit more regional, to save the wear and tear on themselves in many ways. We have a generation that's dealing with mental health issues, the impact of COVID and those types of things, so to be in a position that the College Football Playoff for FBS – which really isn't managed by the NCAA anyway – splits off and does their own thing, I think, would be a benefit to the rest of the student-athletes across the country.” Butterly also talks about his recent rebuttal to the proposed DI governance structure which includes weighted voting for the Power 4 and notes: “Why are you in the room where it happens if your voice, if your vote, doesn’t matter in the room where it happens?” He adds: “The autonomous conferences have had weighted voting for I think 12 years now, and they haven’t done much with it. … They could have done some things with their votes over the last 12 years to change the NCAA to potentially determine some things with NIL and other things that are currently going on in the system, but they didn't really pass much autonomous legislation.” Lots more. Southeastern Louisiana AD/Baseball Selection Committee Chair Jay Artigues joins the D1Baseball podcast to cover several topics related to filling out the NCAA Tournament field, including the importance of the eye test versus RPI, the challenges of regional placements, common misconceptions about the committee’s work and more. When it comes to teams challenging themselves in the non-conference, Artigues believes “intent to schedule is important. And I’m not knocking any programs, but let’s just say you schedule an Arkansas thinking they’ll be one of the best teams in the league because they always are and they have that one down year where they finished 14th in the SEC. You tried to schedule a tough, challenging team. It just so happened that year they were down. So I think the intent to schedule means a lot…and that’s discussed in that room a lot, a good bit.” Artigues believes the “eyeball test is really important…especially now that you’ve got opportunities to watch them all. If you’re not watching games these days, shame on you because you can see almost everybody play.” On whether the mission is to choose the 64 best teams versus the 64 “most deserving” teams, Artigues says that’s the “million-dollar question. … To me, I like to put the best 64 teams in, in my opinion. Sometimes that is the most deserving, sometimes it’s not. But everybody’s different. Some people don’t want to reward a team that’s 13th in their league.” Full podcast. (link)

In assessing Eastern Kentucky’s place in the next iteration of college sports, Colonels AD Kyle Moats’ primary hope is that, regardless of how the business model changes, student-athletes at schools like EKU will still have a chance to compete for national championships against the players from the top-tier leagues. “My wish has always been that, at our level, we still have the opportunity to compete at the highest level, meaning the (men’s) NCAA basketball tournament, women’s basketball tournament, baseball, whatever those may be, that we still get that opportunity.” Moats acknowledges that it will be more difficult, but says: “As long as we have some opportunity, I’m OK with that.” Moats also tells the Lexington Herald-Leader’s Mark Story that it is incumbent on schools not in the power conferences to accept that there can’t be uniform rules that bind all of DI. “The top 60 or 70 or 50 (athletics programs), whatever that number is, they need to do what they need to do because they’re so different than us. I don’t think that they should adhere necessarily to all the (same) rules. They need to do what they need to do to make sense for them. They shouldn’t worry about us – because it’s (the difference between) apples and watermelons.” (link)

Florida State’s Seminole Boosters is the latest to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect for use of its Talent Finder software and unlimited job postings on D1.ticker through CollegeSports.jobs. Through this relationship, Seminole Boosters staff will be able to broaden their candidate pools for administrative searches by reaching both active and passive job seekers — individuals who are open to new opportunities but not actively applying — a group that represents over 70% of the overall talent market. Seminole Boosters CEO Stephen Ponder: “We used Collegiate Sports Connect to fill a specific role on our staff. We had no specific candidates in mind but had specific criteria on what qualities and qualifications we wanted in the candidate. Collegiate Sports Connect helped us narrow that search very quickly and allowed us to make a great hire in less than a month from the start of the process. I highly recommend Connect to assist in hiring.” (link)

USC paid Football HC Lincoln Riley more than $11.5M in reportable compensation in 2023, according to the Los Angeles Times’ Ryan Kartje, who notes Riley’s $10.2M in base compensation ranked No. 4 nationally in 2023. Kartje also reports that $100K of Riley’s pay is listed under bonus and incentive compensation and $1.15M is categorized as other reportable compensation. The school’s federal tax returns credit Trojans AD Jennifer Cohen with over $3M in reportable compensation, but Kartje notes that figure includes the $1M buyout paid to Washington. Cohen is listed as making $687,185 in base compensation, as well as $200K in bonuses and incentives. The school reported $2.11M in other reportable compensation to Cohen, almost half of which would presumably cover the buyout. USC credited former Men’s Basketball HC Andy Enfield with $4.6M in compensation during 2023. (link)

With former Men’s Basketball HC Mike Krzyzewski no longer on the payroll, Duke’s highest-paid employee in FY24 “didn't coach basketball or even work in athletics,” according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes: “Instead, Neal F. Triplett, the university’s chief investment officer, topped the payroll in fiscal year 2024, according to Duke’s latest tax filings obtained by Sportico. Triplett earned $4.7M in combined base salary and bonuses, surpassing former head football coach Mike Elko, who received $3.9M. Men’s basketball coach Jon Scheyer ranked fourth among university employees with a total compensation of $2.38M – $1.26M in base pay and $1.03M in bonuses. This pay hierarchy is not only unusual for Duke, a private university, but is also atypical for almost any Division I FBS institution.” Libit also reports that “aside from salaries, Duke’s latest tax filing showed the school spent $34.3M on undergraduate athletic scholarships and $6.6M on graduate athletic scholarships in FY24. The latter is almost twice as much as what the school reported spending the previous fiscal year.” (link)
