The Trump administration’s college sports commission is still moving forward despite former Alabama (DI) Football HC Nick Saban, the commission’s reported co-chair, casting doubt on the need for one. The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr., Chris Vannini and Justin Williams report the commission “is not official and still in the preliminary planning stages, according to sources briefed on its progress, but a source told The Athletic last week that Trump is expected to be ‘very engaged’ with the commission and views improving college sports as an issue of national importance. There is no timetable for when the commission might be formalized.” (link); Saban met today with Texas Tech (DI) Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the “commission will continue developing, with Saban included. Further direction from the White House is expected. White House leaders have begun pooling recommendations for commission membership from those at the power conferences, NCAA and athlete groups. Membership is expected to be 10 people or less with a goal of political and cultural diversity.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “NIL Go” is being distributed to schools, including a two-page memo that details concepts, “much of what has been reported but now formalized in writing to school administrators.” The memo outlines the purpose of NIL Go along with its processes, framework, launch timeline, cost considerations and more. Partner Katie Davis notes in response: “Curious whether any schools knew they needed to identify a ‘Change Champion’ within 24 hours and to expect a cost of $5,000-$500,000?” (link); Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich finds that the “most striking part of [Deloitte’s NIL Go] memo is the part that says the clearinghouse won't block players' NIL deals. If a deal is flagged by the clearinghouse as pay-for-play, the athlete can still accept it… just with the understanding there's a risk of eligibility concerns.” (link)

Columbus State introduced new AD Justin Hay as the Cougars’ next AD last week. On what drew him to Columbus: “This department's doing things the right way and I truly believe it is poised to take the next step from good to great and from regional relevance to national leadership. My purpose in athletics and our vision moving forward here at Columbus State will be rooted in a well-rounded student-athlete experience where we develop the whole person, servant leaders. Something that I quickly learned was a vision of [President] Dr. Rayfield and a purpose here at Columbus State. That's where that excitement came from. That is my purpose in life. That is why I wake up in the morning. That's why I've been in athletics as long as I can remember.” Asked about the future for the Cougars: “I think that for us, this is the beginning and this is the start. We want to continue to compete regionally. We want to want to compete in the Peach Belt. We want to compete at the top of the Peach Belt in all sports. We talk about student-athlete experience but winning is part of that. It's hard to have a good student-athlete experience when you're not winning, so our goal will be continuing to compete at the top of the Peach Belt, but we're going to set our sights on regional relevance and national relevance and go after that.” Full presser. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics voted Thursday to recommend that all three divisions sponsor legislation to establish a National Collegiate Championship in acrobatics and tumbling. The recommendation is contingent on official confirmation of the sport's sponsorship and participation numbers for spring 2025 competition, which will occur over the summer. The projected timeline has the first championship slated for the spring of 2027. FloSports announced the closure of its Series D investment round on April 1, during which it raised a “high eight-figure number,” according to JohnWallStreet, who notes: "The core premise behind Flo’s business is simple. Avid fans, regardless of the sport, consider live games/events ‘must see’ content and will pay a premium to consume them. So, it rolled up the broadcast rights to more than 40,000 events across 20 verticals over the last decade (some deals include production, others focus exclusively on distribution). The company’s thesis has played as expected.” Causeway Media Partners Managing Partner Mark Wan: “When [Causeway initially invested in March 2015], Flo had 7,000 subscribers. We're more than a 100x that today. … We [will] have 800 viewers show up for some of our live events. But they're [each] paying $30 a month because they can't get that content anywhere else.” JWS notes that Flo currently has over 1M paying subscribers, and as the company looks to grow, could expand its portfolio from 25 sports to 125 or more. Wan: “We don't see any near-term limits on what we can do or how we can grow this business. … As we get more [content within] each vertical, the retention numbers get better and better. People, Wan adds, “subscribe [once] and they stay around for years. … There’s no single contract [amongst its ~15,000] that represents a significant portion of [the subscriber base]. So, to come in and disrupt our business, or even to replicate it, is really hard.” More. (link)
