From a Business North Carolina event yesterday, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham said the Tar Heels have sold out of their 20,000 Football season tickets, which includes raising prices by roughly 25% with momentum behind first-year HC Bill Belichick. On the House settlement: “The sooner we start [under the settlement], the better.” Cunningham also noted a focus on endowing sports programs through donations or producing exclusive content to sell to fans as additional revenue drivers, but still believes there will be a need for institutional support in order to add the $20.5M+ needed for revenue sharing. More from Axios Raleigh’s Zachery Eanes. (link)

Even with the potential of an expanded College Football Playoff, Oregon AD Rob Mullens points to the need for a compelling regular season on the Unafraid Show podcast. Mullens: “At the end of the day, conference media revenue is extremely important. But ticket revenue and the donations tied to the ticket revenue and the passion and connection with your fans is extremely important as well. [...] So, you know, in the last 15 years, we've had, we've played a regional FCS opponent which in our region tends to be a really good FCS team. We've played a group of five opponent again, which in our region, tends to be a really good group of five team. And then we've done a home and home with other Power 4, you know, we've got Oklahoma State next year. We played Boise [State] last year. We've got Baylor in the future. I think our formula will still stay the same. Because now, you really have to win your conference to prove it. You still want the regular season to be relevant.” (link)

Tennessee “now has the most athlete-friendly NIL law,” according to Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter, who notes it “appears to prohibit all of the House settlement’s limits on NIL comp (salary cap, collective restrictions, etc.) unless they’re part of a federal law, valid court order, or determined to be exempt from antitrust law.” Notably, from the bill, which Winter notes became effective immediately on May 1, an “institution’s athletic association shall not: interfere with, prohibit, restrict, or otherwise adversely affect an intercollegiate athlete's ability to earn compensation, seek representation, perform diligence, or otherwise participate in an activity described in§ 49-7-2802 and shall not otherwise impact an intercollegiate athlete's eligibility or full participation in intercollegiate athletic events; interfere with, prohibit, restrict, or otherwise punish an institution and its affiliated foundation for participating in an activity described in § 49-7-2802; threaten, condition, or cause an institution or a governing body of this state to repeal any state law and suffer any detrimental harm, economic or otherwise, in order to participate in such association and enjoy its full rights of membership or otherwise thereunder; or violate § 49-7-2802(b)(4); unless, in each case, this part is invalidated or rendered unenforceable by operation of law. The attorney general and reporter may bring any appropriate action or proceeding against an institution's athletic association in any court of competent jurisdiction pursuant to this part.” (link); Full bill. In the latest episode of The Career Hustle, Connect's Kristen Eargle is joined by Ole Miss Senior Deputy AD for External Relations and Business Development Dr. Eric Wood, who elaborates on his decision to leave the Louisiana Tech AD role for his current position in Oxford. During his career, Wood says he’s taken “calculated risks” with each move, adding: “I did realize it was a lot harder from the internal side of the house, from the student-athlete services side of the house to get at least a G5 or Power 4 AD job. … It was during my time representing Conference USA on the Football Oversight Committee – and I was the representative on the DI Council – over those two or three years that I had the opportunity to serve in that role, I just saw where the shift was moving. And while I’m not in any rush, the ultimate goal is to become a Power 4 AD at some point in the future. … I thought this would be the best position for my career. But here’s the other thing. I wasn’t going to go just anywhere. And [Rebels AD] Keith Carter is one of the best human beings, he’s at his alma mater, and I thought if I’m not going to lead my own department, I want to work for somebody that I believe in.” Lots more on Connect. The NCAA and defendant conferences have filed their reply in support of roster limit changes in which they argue: “All student-athletes on a roster during the current season (the 2024-25 Academic Year) who were or would have been removed from a roster because of the implementation of roster limits will not count against any school’s roster for the duration of their eligibility; all newly incoming student-athletes who were assured of a roster spot by a Member Institution, and then told they no longer had a roster spot because of the implementation of roster limits, will not count against any school’s roster for the duration of their eligibility; schools participating in the Pool structure will be required to prepare lists of the student-athletes falling in these two groups, called ‘Designated Student-Athletes,’ in good faith with copies of the lists going to Class Counsel; and Designated Student-Athletes will not count against roster limits wherever they go, e.g. if they transfer to another Member Institution; and Designated Student-Athletes will always have the opportunity to return to the school that had them on a roster, or assured them of a roster spot, regardless of NCAA rules. These features ensure that no class members ‘will be harmed’ by the implementation of the settlement’s roster limits provisions…because the class members identified by the Court are in the same position as prior to the settlement’s announcement.” Full response. Former Alabama Football HC Nick Saban met today with Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the “commission will continue developing, with Saban included. Further direction from the White House is expected. White House leaders have begun pooling recommendations for commission membership from those at the power conferences, NCAA and athlete groups. Membership is expected to be 10 people or less with a goal of political and cultural diversity.” (link)

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) mentioned AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl as a potential addition to the presidential commission on college sports, and Bohl tells CBS’ John Talty and Richard Johnson: "The only thing that I can say is that the AFCA, we've had significant conversations with what I believe are the stakeholders in college football and our perspective and my perspective is that we listen to all the coaches and we certainly have some insight that I think is unique. But as far as the formulation of the commission, I'm not aware that anything has been set in stone. I've had dialogue, but there's not been anybody from that commission to say, 'Hey Craig, we want you on here.' I've had a dialogue. I just don't know where it's all at. … I know [President Trump] is a big college football fan. I do know he cares, and I do know that Coach Saban cares. I think it's imperative that each lane, whether it's a commissioner, whether it's college presidents, whether it's coaches or student athletes or some members of Congress, that everybody has an opportunity to engage and clarify and offer their perspective on a pathway forward." Tuberville believes the key to the commission is not to overcrowd it, though he acknowledges that even though his role with the commission is informal, he’s fielded a lot of interest and adds: "I think you get people involved who are looking at it every day. Not just some weekend person. We're going to need player involvement, men and women. One thing that President Trump says on my watch is: 'We're not losing women's sports, we're not losing Title IX.'" As far as what the commission should seek to accomplish, Tuberville notes there are several areas that could be addressed, but “the one thing we have to do – and I told the president this – the one thing we can do is we can get all 50 states doing the same thing." USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports that “with the ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 providing their new returns this week in response to requests from USA Today Sports, and the Big Ten and SEC having done so previously, the combined revenue tally for fiscal 2024 was nearly $3.54B, compared to a little more than $3.55B for fiscal 2023. Berkowitz breaks down the Pac-12, ACC and Big 12’s finances, starting with the Pac-12, which brought in $566.6M in revenue during FY24. The per-school payout was $30.15M for the 10 other than Oregon State and Washington State and $46.6M for Oregon State and Washington State. Overall average for the 12 schools: $32.9M, fifth among Power Five. Former Commissioner George Kliavkoff was credited with nearly $3.7M in total compensation for the 2023 calendar year. The ACC generated $711.4M in revenue, third among Power Five. Per-school payouts ranged from $43.1M to $46.4M, except for Notre Dame, which received $20.7M. Commissioner Jim Phillips was credited with nearly $4.1M in total compensation, including almost $3.95M in base compensation. The base amount represents a roughly 50% increase over his total for the 2022 calendar year. The Big 12 reported revenue of $493.8M, fourth among Power Five. Per school payouts ranged from $37.8M to $42.1M for the schools other than newcomers BYU, Houston, UCF and Cincinnati, which averaged about $20M apiece. Commissioner Brett Yormark earned $4.4M, including just over $2.5M categorized as base pay and $1.25M in bonus pay. (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit notes the Pac-12 reported spending $11.8M in legal fees during FY24, which is “believed to be the highest amount ever disclosed by a collegiate athletic conference. Those expenditures covered a range of courtroom battles, including athlete antitrust lawsuits, internal governance disputes and the fallout from the league’s contraction from 12 to just two remaining members. More than half of those legal fees went to the San Francisco office of Cooley LLP.” Libit also notes the conference spent $57.3M on salaries, compensation and employee benefits in FY24, up significantly from $40.3M the previous fiscal year. “The sharp increase was largely due to a sweeping organizational overhaul, which included retention bonuses and severance payouts. The conference staff shrank from roughly 190 employees – including those at the now-defunct Pac-12 Networks – to around 30. … Aside from lawyers, a significant portion of the league’s independent contracting expenses in FY24 stemmed from the development of the conference’s new production facility in San Ramon, Calif. The Pac-12 reported spending $25M across three firms for construction work related to the project.” (link)
|
The ACC reported $12.3M in outside legal expenses during FY24, up 70.8% YoY and a more than 4x increase over the last four years, according to The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel, who notes that “San Francisco-based Latham & Watkins ($2.8M) and Greensboro, North Carolina-based Fox Rothschild ($1.3M) were the league’s priciest outside representation, the escalating costs also reflecting the power conferences defending themselves in multiple antitrust lawsuits brought by former athletes, most prominently the House case. Teel also points out the conference hired its first full-time general counsel, Pearlynn Houck, in 2023. “Her compensation was $449,867, bringing the conference’s total legal costs to nearly $12.8M. For context: The SEC’s tax return listed $4.3M in outside legal expenses, plus $735,313 in pay for associate commissioner for legal affairs William King. According to Sportico, the Big Ten reported $7M in outside legal expenses and paid in-house counsel Anil Gollahalli $518K.” (link)
