Western Carolina promotes Deputy AD/COO Kyle Pifer to be the Catamounts’ next AD. Chancellor Kelli Brown: “Mr. Kyle Pifer is an outstanding choice to lead Catamount Nation into its next era. In the short amount of time that Kyle has served as interim AD, he has distinguished himself as a collaborative and strategic university leader with a commanding grasp of the landscape of intercollegiate athletics. Catamount Athletics is in good hands with Kyle at the helm, and I am confident and excited about the future for our amazing student-athletes.” Collegiate Sports Associates assisted with the search. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken could decide on the House settlement this week, but “her approval wouldn’t insulate the settlement from additional legal challenges. Expect to see Title IX lawsuits filed against schools that don’t share about the same amount of revenue with women athletes as they do with male athletes. It’s also possible Wilken could stay some of the settlement’s terms while objectors pursue appeals with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and eventually the U.S. Supreme Court.” While Wilken does not have to make a decision this week, McCann points out that Wilken, “who is a former law professor and thus likely appreciative of the academic calendar, has a reputation for being pragmatic and realistic. She knows the new year at many universities will begin in six weeks. She also knows that as commencements and graduation ceremonies come and go in May, college leaders gear up for the 2025-26 academic year and prepare for the fall entering class—some of whom will be athletes. Colleges and power conferences have also relied on the expectation of the settlement’s approval to negotiate contracts. At some point, the parties will need to know the rules going forward.” (link)

More from Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard’s interview on The Rush Radio Show. Does Pollard ever ask himself if he, at 60 years old, still wants to keep doing this? “Every day. … One minute I’m feeling that and then the other minute I get something that reminds me that 90% of our student-athletes, this doesn’t even matter to them.” Why are publicly traded companies exempt from the Deloitte clearinghouse? “I don’t know. The four commissioners are the ones brokering this deal. I’ve been on so many calls…just get me to the end and tell me what it’s going to be, and they keep saying it’s going to be this, but I'll believe it when I see it because we’ve shown absolutely no history – absolutely no history – of policing ourselves.” (link)

The Georgia Athletic Association's proposed FY26 budget is nearly $223M, a 16% increase driven largely by revenue-sharing, according to the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer, who notes UGA is allocating its $20.5M by distributing roughly $18M for athlete payments and $2.5M for new scholarships. Weiszer also notes the Bulldogs are adding about 100 total scholarships for athletes, but will eliminate Alston payments and plan on introducing “modest” increases to some concession prices. The finance committee recommended that the full board approve the budget. (link)

The Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch examines UCLA’s efforts to increase revenue and trim its budget deficit, and Deputy AD/CRO Daniel Cruz, who is spearheading efforts to overhaul the school’s ticket operations and build a courtside lounge inside Pauley Pavilion, explains: “Essentially, what I’m trying to do is just trying to set us up for success and do things differently because the old way of how college athletics normally conducts business, it’s not working.” One specific measure the Bruins are taking includes partnering with Elevate to modernize operations and build a customer database that allows more targeted marketing. In doing so, the Bruins will implement a dynamic pricing model that was impossible under the school’s previous system. Cruz: “It’s going to be huge because we are now professionalizing how we go to market, how we price things. I get a lot of complaints from fans that they think ticket prices are too high for certain games and they may be right, so how do we pull those levers to make it accessible on games that it’s not full, so we can get people in?” In addition to a field-level club at the Rose Bowl, the Bruins are also seeking to generate revenue by adding a “massive stage on the north side of the stadium overlooking the adjacent country club that will allow UCLA to bring in DJs and musical acts for pregame festivities,” per Bolch, who adds: “UCLA will sell cabana space, food and premium parking to provide a tailgate experience for both football fans and others who just want to have a good time.” (link)

Illinois Football HC Bret Bielema weighs in on what a potential post-House football landscape could look like: “The good news is, there’s some things that are going to change college football that have never been seen before that I think will be a good thing. There’s probably some growing pains we’ve got to go through. This is the last – in theory, the last world where we’ve been combining an NIL world that’s really unchartered, unprotected and, really, without consequences. So you’re going to see teams this year in college football, just because I know the landscape I’m dealing with, that are probably in the neighborhood of $30-35M, maybe some of them close to $40M rosters – which is insanity, at its best, but it’s also awesome for our kids. Last year, we finished fifth in our conference, 18-team conference. We had about a $5M pool that we were working off of, but the four teams ahead of us, I think, were north of $20M. You can pull that off once in a while, but to pull that off year-in and year-out is just not in the deck of cards that we’re dealt. … To get everybody [in] a ballpark that everybody’s kind of in that same thing, whether we’re all shopping at Walmart or Louis Vuitton, as long as we’re all shopping in the same mall, I can live with that. But we have to be able to have some type of parameters to make sure that makes it consistent for everybody.” (link)

SBJ Publisher/Executive Editor Abraham Madkour on Michael Smith: “For nearly 20 years, Smith was out front in chronicling the business opportunities and challenges facing the collegiate landscape and did so with great integrity and honesty. Smith created a coverage area that is now filled with talented reporters and is one of the most competitive beats in sports business. … He made us so much better, and we learned so much from watching and working with him. He was steady, calm and unflappable; he was dependable and trustworthy. If he said it, he’d do it and do it right. Curiosity, a trait of all great reporters, was at his core. His sneaky, quick dry wit would make you laugh out loud when you needed it the most. He had unbelievable talent with words and crafting a story and he did it all with such grace and humility.” Madkour adds: “My friend Ben Sutton said it best: ‘This is one of the most seminally important people in my view in college sports in the past 25 years.’” (link)

The Big 12 is moving its baseball tournament to Surprise Stadium in Arizona on an annual basis starting next season, marking the first time the tournament, which began in 1997, will be played outside Texas or Oklahoma. The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner notes Surprise Stadium, which is located northwest of Phoenix and serves as the spring training home for the Royals and Rangers, “is considered one of the top spring training facilities in baseball. (It was No. 1 in a recent USA Today ranking.) The capacity is 10,714, making it more intimate than the tournament’s current location, Globe Life Field in Arlington, the Rangers’ home stadium with 40,000 seats. The venue offers lawn seating, air-conditioned suites and other premium seating areas, according to the Big 12. It has played host to MLB spring training for two decades as well as Arizona Fall League competition. The decision will undoubtedly be well received by two of the conference’s new members, Arizona State and Arizona, and fits within the Big 12’s broader strategy of integrating into the expanded geography.” (link)

+ Disney President of Platform Distribution Justin Connolly, who has held several senior leadership positions with ESPN during his 25-year career with the company, resigned on Friday; however, a Disney source says the company has not agreed to release him. Puck’s Dylan Byers: “A Disney insider told [Puck’s John] Ourand that they were surprised by Connolly’s abrupt decision to exit since he re-upped a multiyear, fixed-term contract earlier this year, and Disney has not agreed to release him—to YouTube TV or anywhere else. Connolly was a finalist to replace John Skipper as the head of ESPN in 2018—a job that eventually went to Jimmy Pitaro. He was also in the mix to run the NBC Sports Group a couple of years ago, before Disney lured him back with an attractive deal.” Awful Announcing’s Andrew Bucholtz: “If Connolly does indeed wind up with YouTube TV, that could be interesting given the timing of their carriage deal for Disney networks coming up. Connolly would certainly have plenty of knowledge and background from the other side that could be useful for the MVPD in those talks.” (link)

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard says if given the power he’d go back in time and restructure college sports to forestall the issues facing the industry today. “We’re not fixing the problem, we’re prolonging the inevitable. … The problem is you cannot put a professional model over the top of college sports but then want to run it like college sports. The NFL has one commissioner. There’s not four. There’s not eight. Can you imagine if the Packers, Bears, Vikings and Lions had a commissioner and the [NFC East] had a commissioner and they were all doing their own television deals? Our structure is not correct.” Pollard adds that there “was a time that college football had a bigger television deal than the NFL,” but “all the pro leagues went one way and college went the other way and now we're not even close to those television deals. So you have to ask yourself why is it that way? And the biggest glaring deal is how we're set up. We're set up that we don't pool our rights, we make a rule and before the rule’s codified we’re already figuring out how to get around the rule. It’s absolutely ludicrous. So, the inevitable is coming – the inevitable has started. You’ve seen shrinkage, shrinkage, shrinkage, shrinkage. Every day I pick up the paper or see a post [that] another institution is in debt X million dollars. … The [economics] are not sustainable. They just aren’t.” Lots more. (link)

Kansas State AD Gene Taylor joins the Within Reason radio program and contextualizes the Wildcats’ current position in the college sports landscape. Taylor notes that if the league hadn’t been aggressive in conference realignment, “we could have been Oregon State and Washington State without a home. … If you’d have told me the Pac-12 was no longer going to exist a few years ago, I’d have told you you were crazy. And here we are.” After the departures of Texas and Oklahoma, Taylor explains he was in frequent contact with Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard and Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg to discuss their next moves, “and fortunately we were able to stay together as the eight left and follow our commissioner and let him go out and do what he did, which was get those schools.” Taylor believes realignment among power conferences is likely done “for now,” as the SEC and Big Ten, they don’t want to share anymore, but you never say never. Where you’re seeing realignment is the Group of 5 and the non-Power 4 conferences, but you never say never.” While the Wildcats will take on Iowa State in Ireland this August, Taylor points out the goal isn’t to build the brand internationally. “Our brands are local and with our fans in our states, and it’s terribly expensive to do those kinds of things. I think it’s a one-time deal. You’ll see basketball teams make some trips every once in a while, but it’s not our goal to build a brand across the world.” (link)

Pittsburgh AD Allen Greene last week remarked during the Zittrain Forum’s Game Changers panel discussion that as it relates to the industry writ large, “we've got to do something different because the status quo is not acceptable. We have to think about, in my opinion and in my observation, the bigger picture of what sport is in this country, in our society. ... This is not a college athletics issue we’re dealing with; it’s a societal issue. … We’re finding ourselves trying to figure out how you create an environment, legally, that provides all student-athletes the opportunity to make as much money as they possibly can. The challenge with that, practically speaking…is athletic departments will either go bankrupt or universities will spend a lot more money to support athletics because people like to win or athletes, sports, teams get significantly cut or reduced.” (link)

The Knoxville News Sentinel’s Adam Sparks unpacks Tennessee’s recently signed state law that allows universities in the state to pay student-athletes beyond the terms of the House settlement. Specifically, Sparks points out that “a third-party NIL collective can pay a college athlete unless expressly prohibited or limited by federal law, a valid court order with binding jurisdiction over an institution and its athletes, or federal antitrust laws; Tennessee universities don’t have to follow anticompetitive NCAA rules that lessen, or tend to lessen, full and free competition in trade or commerce; the NCAA cannot establish, adopt, promulgate, implement or enforce any rule, standard, procedure, policy or guideline that violates an applicable state or federal antitrust law; the NCAA must fully secure and hold harmless the state, its institutions and intercollegiate athletes from damages, losses, claims or remedies of any kind arising from its noncompliance or failure under applicable law; and any diligence performed, or compensation earned, does not affect the athlete’s grant-in-aid (scholarship) or athletic eligibility.” (link)

Japan’s Diamond League appears to be the most lucrative option for softball student-athletes who want to keep playing professionally, according to Front Office Sports’ Annie Costabile. Former Oklahoma standout Kelly Maxwell, who now plays for the Toyota Industries Shining Vega, explains: “[The money is] probably double anything in the States. I knew I had this gap year between graduating and beginning veterinary school. I was like, ‘Wow, what a great opportunity to put money in my pocket to help pay for school and not have to rely on loans and being in debt when I’m out.’” Former South Carolina pitcher Donnie Gobourne, who now plays for the Hitachi Sundiva, says the amenities for pro softball players are also a major factor in drawing the sport’s best players to Japan. On top of her six-figure salary, Gobourne said she enjoys private living and a chef who cooks three meals a day, minus off-days. “They value softball a lot here. I’m not going to say they don’t value it in America, because obviously we do. I can just say it’s entirely different.” Stateside, Costabile notes Athletes Unlimited “offers softball players the most lucrative base salary in the U.S., with average player compensation at $40K per season. AUSL players will also receive year-round health benefits, which is a first for professional softball players in the U.S. But that package pales in comparison to what the JDL can offer its athletes.” Furthermore, Costabile notes that “signing with the JDL comes with a lifetime employment contract with the team’s ownership company. The hours players work for the company vary. Some players work company hours only during the offseason while others juggle both, practicing after work.” More. (link)
