Saint Joseph’s (ME) hires Asst. Professor of Sport and Exercise Science Christopher Willer as its next AD. President Joseph Cassidy: “Saint Joseph's College is fortunate to have Chris Willer step up and accept the responsibility of being our next Athletic Director. Chris has a tremendous amount of experience with Monks Athletics as an athlete, coach and supporter. Wisconsin-Eau Claire AD Jason Verdugo and Assoc. AD for Business Affairs/SWA Robin Baker join the Rollin’ with the Golds podcast to discuss points of emphasis, the upcoming chancellor change for UWEC and more. Points of emphasis heading into 2025-26 include pushing to be top five or ten in attendance for all sports, removing barriers to attendance, and “as we start to have continuity of our staff, continuing to push them is really going to be a point of emphasis for me: how can I help them and challenge them as I get more comfortable in my role and continue to earn their trust.” Verdugo adds: “I really hope that everybody that's associated with our department and program or teams, from the families to the academic side, they influence winning. To me, that's certainly a goal is I want everybody to see through that lens that what they do drastically influences winning.” On the search for a new chancellor, Verdugo: “Our goal is that we become an asset in the recruiting process of the next chancellor. So the fact that athletics is such a huge part of every collegiate campus now, depending on how you look at it, but from a Division III standpoint, just because of the totality of net tuition revenue and what it brings in terms of students. We want somebody that's looking at this job, at least for me personally, to look at it and say they have a lot of great things, the new science building, the Sonnentag, the expansion of majors, whatever that case may be and go, I want to be a part of that because they're really in a really good position.” Baker notes one key for the development of the Blugolds’ culture was three cornerstones coming out of the first HC leadership summit last summer: belief, details and trust. Tennessee (DI) men’s basketball standout Zakai Zeigler has filed an eligibility lawsuit against the NCAA, and Boise State (DI) assistant professor Sam Ehrlich notes: “This is something of a twist from the formula: Zeigler, who has played at UT since his true freshman year in 2021, seeks a fifth year within his eligibility window. So unlike the other cases we've seen, Zeigler is not seeking to not count a JUCO year, or a DII year, etc. He wants a straight five years of play in five years of eligibility. As a result – and as you may imagine – his complaint largely centers around the redshirt rule. … The most interesting part of this particular case: attacking the NCAA's procompetitive justifications. What will the procompetitive justifications be for only allowing four seasons in five years? As the complaint argues, it can't be academics since they allow five years anyway.” (link); Full complaint. (link); Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter points out that “Zeigler alleges he’d earn between $2-4M if allowed to play a 5th season of college basketball. Likely accurate. With athletes now paid significant amounts by schools explicitly tied to their participation in athletics, NCAA eligibility rules restrict how long they can sell their labor.” (link)

Knight Commission Notes…
+ NCAA President Charlie Baker confirms the NCAA will cede its enforcement authority of amateurism to the College Sports Commission, explaining in remarks made to the Knight Commission that “the power conferences’ response to [the House settlement] is to create an entity, the College Sports Commission. The point behind that was to have an entity that would see the cap management system and the third-party NIL system. Have rules associated with both. Create enforcement parameters for violating those rules under the rubric that would be the theoretical injunction.” Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich notes the NCAA will retain its enforcement of other concepts, “like academic eligibility, in-game sports rules, and sports betting. The governing body will also continue to run championships, and will pay for a significant amount of the House settlement damages.” (link)
+ Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger points out that an interesting proposal to preserve Olympic sports was submitted at the Knight Commission meeting today. Specifically, “Olympic coaches associations are pushing for a law to (1) codify NCAA sport minimum (16 for FBS) and (2) require schools maintain current average resource allocations for non-FB/BSK sports.” AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon shared more on the required allocation, pointing out to Dellenger that FBS schools allocate 65% of their budget to football and basketball and 35% on other sports. Under the proposal, that funding level would be maintained in perpetuity. Dellenger adds that “Gordon told the Knight Commission that 32 Olympic sports programs in Division I have been cut since the announcement of the House settlement – a loss of 966 roster spots. That does not include Saint Francis moving all 22 programs to Division III.” (link)

+ Catholic is on track to have a balanced budget for this fiscal year after a series of budget cuts that eliminated 66 staff positions or 7% of its workforce, lessened increases in salaries and retirement contributions, and new revenue-enhancing initiatives. President Peter Kilpatrick: “The restructuring process we have completed today is significant. We did not take the easy path, but I am confident that we took the right one. + The University System of Maryland Board of Regents has approved member institutions to consider furloughs and temporary salary reductions in the face of a 7% cut from state appropriations for FY26 and federal research grant cuts for the system. Of note from Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Ellen Herbst: “Declining income tax revenue from increased unemployment is real and will have an impact on the state budget, as well as having an impact on how we project our own financial position.” (link)
