Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports plans for a presidential commission on college sports have been paused, “a move possibly rooted in its potential impact in Senate negotiations over college sports legislation.” Dellenger adds: “It is unclear how long the pause will extend, except to potentially give five U.S. senators, led by Ted Cruz and Cory Booker, more time to possibly reach an agreement on federal legislation. The senators have met multiple times over the last four months but hurdles remain.” (link); On3’s Pete Nakos reports Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell “will continue to work behind the scenes for when the presidential commission is ready to move forward. The pause was mainly led by Sen. Ted Cruz, per source.” (link)

College Football Playoff leaders have unanimously approved moving to straight seeding starting this upcoming season, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who adds: “However, the decision comes with a financial compromise, according to those with knowledge of the agreement. Under the current revenue model, the four highest-ranked conference champions earn $8 million: $4 million for qualifying for the CFP and $4 million for a quarterfinal appearance. According to the compromise, the four highest-ranked champions, even if they are not the top four seeds, are expected to continue earning the $8 million — at least for this year. The 2026 playoff will bring a new revenue-distribution model that was established last spring where conferences earn a base amount in a system without performance payments.” (link); Dellenger notes that “teams will be seeded directly on the rankings, 1 thru 12, eliminating the concept that designated the top 4 seeds for conference champs. … As [ESPN’s Heather Dinich] points out, Notre Dame is now eligible for a first-round bye this year with the change in seeding. Under the previous format, Irish could only be seeded as high as fifth and could not earn a first-round bye.” (link)

The American is set to announce the creation of American RISE Ventures, a vertical designed to roll up the AAC’s commercial business interests into a single entity, Commissioner Tim Pernetti tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, who reports the division will be headed by Chief Commercial Officer Bryan Calka, who previously served as CCO of the Professional Fighters League. Pernetti explains: “Bringing all the commercial business together in one division gives us the ability to scale things across the conference more effectively. Whether that’s conference naming rights, playing surfaces, jersey patches or any of those things, it gives us the ability to create more value for the sum of the parts." Pernetti also explains that “private capital investment in and around college sports is being discussed more than it ever has been, and there’s a lot of conferences out there in the midst of processes right now. But private capital partners are looking to make bets on future commercial growth, media rights and all the commercial stuff. ... We think [creating American RISE Ventures] makes sense for all those reasons. Also from Pernetti: “I’m hopeful in the future that the industry wakes up to the idea that bringing assets to market, including media rights, as a single seller drives so much more selling potential than everybody being out there on their own. Imagine a world where a college football was being taken to the market by a single seller. The value of that would be dramatically greater than what everybody is realizing currently.” (link)

Maryland officially introduces AD Jim Smith, who says “we’re going to focus on alumni engagement. We’re going to focus on filling SECU Stadium and Xfinity Center with Terp fans. And we’re going to give the best fan experience in the country. We’re going to focus on revenue because, make no mistake about it, to compete with the caliber of schools not just in the Big Ten, but across the country, we must increase our revenues. So, we’re going to be trying a few new things – I’m not going to tell anyone any of them today – taking new approaches, applying what I’ve learned from professional leagues here and bringing them to college athletes. Now, I do need to put all this into context. While revenue and brand and competitiveness on the field is critical for our success, we will not lose sight of our enduring mission. I’m also going to be a relentless supporter of our student-athletes. That means investing in academic support, nutrition and training, leadership development, mental health services, brand-building and financial wellness. All of these things create the holistic athlete that we’re trying to create while winning championships.” (link)

Tennessee AD Danny White, in a conversation with UT Chancellor Donde Plowman, says the following about solving the industry’s issues: “I’ll say it. We’ve got a camera on us, I don’t really care at this point. Collective bargaining is the only issue. It’s the only solution.” Plowman: “I agree with you. I think when I step back and I hear the criticisms of us – by us, I mean the industry – people saying, ‘Who’s going to lead this? Why didn't the NCAA do this or why didn't presidents and chancellors step up and do X?’ And the frustration is we're not organized in a way. We’re sort of distributed all over the country, so we need some leadership.” (link)

Georgia President Jere Morehead confirms the Power 4 conferences are circulating an affiliation agreement and remarks: “We think everyone should be bound to honor the House settlement. We agreed to the House Settlement. Each and every president in the Southeastern Conference committed to supporting the House Settlement and if the judge approves it, we intend to follow the settlement and we expect every other SEC institution as well as others in the Power 4 to honor the settlement that they agreed to." According to the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer, Morehead earlier this week noted that “one of the unfortunate things we’re dealing with is this uncontrolled environment with NIL is not what anyone ever expected or intended when NIL started being talked about five or six years ago. Now we have a totally unregulated industry that I think is being corrupted by a lot of outside influences. I hope the House settlement will be the first step in putting some safeguards around NIL but I still believe it’s going to take federal legislation to solve the problems we’re facing.” Also from Morehead: “I don’t know why anyone would resist saying that they will do what they promised to do. That’s all that we’re talking about that we all agree to honor what we said we would do.” (link)

Purdue has officially concluded the Forging Ahead campaign after raising more than $21M since September 2023, surpassing the initial goal of $18.69M. Boilermakers AD Mike Bobinski: "Our focus with Forging Ahead was to enhance our internal capacity for supporting sustained success. That includes the systems and resources for our staff members who recruit, develop, and support our student-athletes every day. This campaign meaningfully advanced that work, and we're grateful to the Boilermaker community for their continued belief in the mission of Purdue Athletics." Forging Ahead has funded several initiatives designed to elevate culture, efficiency, and development across the department, including: a department-wide partnership with Profile, a behavioral assessment and performance strategy firm founded by football alum Chad Brown; expanded support for recruiting and retention, with a focus on data-driven evaluations and sustainable roster development; and investment in staffing and leadership programming to cultivate high-performance team environments. Mississippi State has received a $2.5M gift from the Golding family to strengthen the university's athletic programs. From MSU’s release: “As Mississippi State continues to adapt to the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics, the Golding family's investment to the State Excellence Fund will enhance student-athlete resources and provide critical support in a highly competitive environment. A portion of the gift will also be allocated to the newly announced Billy W. Howard Indoor Practice Facility.” (link)

Texas Tech softball student-athlete NiJaree Canady’s $1M NIL deal may be the last of its kind, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman and Laine Higgins, who cite the House settlement’s rev-share cap and clearinghouse as limiting factors for players moving forward. With those constraints in place, Bachman and Higgins note the influence of donors like John and Tracy Sellers, who funded an endorsement from the school’s collective to help compensate Canady, could be diminished. “The NIL clearinghouse won’t preclude athletes like Canady from signing endorsement deals, but it will bring considerably more oversight. The organization will want to know, for instance, how a booster club can get $1M of value in marketing from a player with a profile like Canady, who has 34,000 followers on Instagram but is hardly a household name.” Tracy Sellers explains that “[Canady] is one of the top women athletes, so in my mind she deserved what some of those male athletes are getting. I hope it’s setting the stage for the next girl.” With the House settlement’s fate still to be determined, The Matador Club has already signed Canady to a one-year extension worth another $1M, and Sellers remarks: “Until we figure out exactly what they’re going to let go on, why not keep going?” (link)

The Trump administration has blocked Harvard from enrolling future international students and retaining currently enrolled foreign students. The Department of Homeland Security says it revoked Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification because the school’s leadership “has created an unsafe campus environment by permitting anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators to harass and physically assault individuals, including many Jewish students, and otherwise obstruct its once-venerable learning environment.” DHS adds that “many of these agitators are foreign students,” and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem adds: “Let this serve as a warning to all universities and academic institutions across the country.” Harvard calls the action “unlawful,” adding: “We are fully committed to maintaining Harvard’s ability to host our international students and scholars, who hail from more than 140 countries and enrich the University – and this nation – immeasurably. We are working quickly to provide guidance and support to members of our community. This retaliatory action threatens serious harm to the Harvard community and our country, and undermines Harvard’s academic and research mission.” Notably, the order requires existing foreign students to “transfer or lose their legal status.” (link)

Officials at multiple schools, including coaches, are expressing concerns about the affiliation agreement being discussed by Power 4 schools, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, and Altius Sports Partners College President Andrew Donovan says: “I would say more [schools] are in the camp of, ‘We do want to get a level playing field. We do want to know what the rules are, and have an understanding that our peers are going to abide by the same rules that we plan to abide by.’ But then, there are others that are in this boat of uncertainty.” The enforceability of the memo is among the concerns being cited, as Christovich explains: “After all, the terms of the House settlement may be challenged in court by players and/or NIL collectives, boosters, or companies whose NIL earnings are restricted or whose deals could get rejected. State attorneys general could sue the power conferences on behalf of players, schools, or brands for enforcing the House settlement rules as well. There’s already precedent for such cases: A previous NIL case led by Virginia and Tennessee AGs ended with the NCAA not being able to enforce several major NIL restrictions. And, of course, it’s unclear whether the punishments in the agreement are legal—and could be challenged later.” Legal concerns aside, Donovan notes some schools worry they could face a competitive disadvantage if they sign the agreement but non-power conferences don’t make their schools do the same. (link)

More on the affiliation agreement drafts being circulated among Power 4 schools, as CBS’ John Talty and Brandon Marcello are told by one ACC AD: "While we have heard as ADs that the penalties would be steep, this is the first I had seen the expulsion and no-lawsuit pledge.” The document was a “hot topic” among Big Ten officials during spring meetings in California this week, and Talty and Marcello report that “very few people, even high-ranking athletics officials, have seen a full draft of what will be included in the new entity, eliciting some confusion and frustration in light of media attention around the latest draft. It prompted plenty of questions from administrators and coaches that boiled down to: What exactly are we signing up for and will it actually work?” However, one “high-ranking source directly involved in the process” remarks: "We all signed off on the settlement, we all signed off on the framework. I don't think it should be particularly surprising that we're going to have membership rules and regulations that say you have to follow our rules and regulations. If you don't, then there will have to be consequences. You can't have people saying they're going to come together for a stable framework with rules and regulations and just simply choose not to follow the rules and regulations." (link)

During yesterday’s intro presser, new Western Carolina AD Kyle Pifer identified growing the donor base as the first hurdle he sees in his new role. "Over the last few years, I think even going back to COVID, we've seen a bunch of different things that have affected us. So it's starting to bring people back. Our fanbase has been so dedicated to us, it's one of the reasons I want to stay here. Our college game day experience is as good as anything I've ever seen before. It's excitement that we're building here, and it's just maintaining that momentum. That's what we have, that's what we need to build on." As the industry awaits word on the House settlement, Pifer remarked that "once that's settled you're going to see us build over the next year the programming around what our donors can and can't do for us to support. I want to meet them where they are. I'm not trying to force something or get somebody to do something they're not comfortable with. But we need to show them where we need support." (link)

CollegeAD provides the specifics on freshly minted Western Carolina AD Kyle Pifer’s five-year contract, which runs through June 30, 2030. Pifer will earn an annual salary of $250K and will receive a one-time signing bonus of $15K should he relocate to Jackson County, North Carolina. He is also in line for a one-time relocation bonus of $25K to help with the move. WCU holds the right to terminate the contract without cause at any time; however, the Catamounts must pay Pifer any unpaid compensation for the remainder of his term. Pifer can also terminate the contract without cause but would owe WCU his base salary minus $50K in Year 1. That figure increases by $50K each year until it is subtracted by $200K in Year 4. (link)

SBJ named Tennessee AD Danny White as its AD of the Year, making him the first Vols AD to win the award since its inception in 2000. UT Chancellor Donde Plowman: "Danny's impact on our campus and in the changing world of intercollegiate athletics has been transformational, and I am thrilled for his leadership to be recognized as the SBJ Athletic Director of the Year. Danny sets the tone with his competitive drive, strategic approach and problem-solving mindset, and has built an incredible team of athletics administrators committed to supporting student-athletes and winning with integrity. The culture he has built at Tennessee is truly special." (link)

The New Mexico Board of Regents has approved a student fee increase of $45 per semester next year and an additional $60 in two years that will go directly to athletics. UNM President Garnett Stokes: “This university has suffered greatly from a failure to invest in athletics. I think that we’ve been able to see with some of the successes (in men’s basketball, in particular) and some of the investments that we can be competitive, but we’re now operating in an environment where the need for continued investment is very important. What we tell the world about what it is we want to be in athletics is very important.” The Albuquerque Journal’s Goeff Grammer notes the increases are in addition to the $120 already going to athletics from student fees and will generate approximately an additional $1.7M in FY26 and $4.1M in FY27. (link)

Longtime North Texas supporter Ernie Kuehne, who has donated over $2.5M to the basketball program, tells the Denton Record-Chronicle’s Brett Vito he will not be part of UNT’s immediate plans to negotiate a post-House landscape, explaining that “I’m not comfortable with the direction of college athletics at the present time and the disadvantage it has placed North Texas in. I’m taking a step back and hoping that the university and the North Texas system decide to step up and allow us to be competitive. Once I’ve had an opportunity to evaluate the process, I will consider my options.” Vito notes that “other longtime donors, including Denny Kalk, are optimistic and point to [former Men’s Basketball HC Grant] McCasland leading the Mean Green to an upset of Purdue four years ago in the NCAA Tournament as evidence of the program’s potential and reason to continue investing in it.” Kalk tells Vito: “If we reach out to Dallas and Fort Worth corporations and build a stronger affiliation with the big money there, we could start to compete with the lower-level power conference schools.” More from Vito. Tuskegee (DII) AD Reginald Ruffin says that the decision about moving to Division I ultimately rests with President Mark Brown and the board of trustees and tells HBCU Gameday’s Steven Gaither: “That will not be a decision alone by me. It’s going to be President Mark Brown…what he wants to see in the next…three-year plan, his five-year plan, what he sees in athletics.” Ruffin adds that “for now, we’re just going to continue to sell out the crowd, and we have to go play FCS schools and be your largest attendance when we play those schools — until the president and the administration decide, ‘Hey, it’s time to make that next step.’ But right now, Steven, I think we’re grounded where we’re planted and we’re planted where we’re grounded. And we are just going to do what we can to continue building the legacy of Tuskegee University.” (link)

Have a look at Arizona’s design for a new basketball court at the McKale Center. Wildcats AD Desiree Reed-Francois: “I was here in the ‘90s and that cactus logo meant something and was unique to Tucson. … I wanted to make sure our fans’ voices were heard, and we listened to them.” (link)

Georgia will install new football practice fields for next spring, according to Bulldogs AD Josh Brooks, who says: “I came up through facilities, so I know the damage (of over-use) and how hard it is to maintain one-and-a-half practice fields. So, being able to add a couple of fields will really give us versatility, not only how we practice and our functionality, but also how we can rotate and not use the same field every day – it’s going to help the life of those fields when you’re not wearing out the same spots.” Having broken ground on a new track facility last summer, Brooks notes that “having soccer, softball, track and golf all in that same area will make it like an Olympic Village and really enhance that south Milledge area.” (link)

UTEP’s Miner Athletic Club (MAC) is implementing a change whereby all gifts to UTEP Athletics will be factored into donors' annual membership levels. Previously, the MAC only recognized donor contributions to the student-athlete scholarship fund through philanthropic and seat-related donations. Additionally, the MAC is introducing a new giving designation called the Talent Acquisition Fund (TAF). The TAF “directly enhances UTEP's ability to attract and retain exceptional student-athletes by allowing supporters to make philanthropic, sport-specific contributions. With the Goldmine Collective transitioning to a business-centric approach, the TAF is now the primary way donors can meaningfully impact Miner Athletics' recruiting efforts.” The MAC has also introduced the Gold Standard Giving Society, composed of donors who commit $30K or more over a three-year period. Members will gain access to premium opportunities, including postseason tickets, pregame sideline access, and away game travel. (link)

Former Florida State Men’s Basketball HC Leonard Hamilton has filed a motion to dismiss the NIL lawsuit against him, according to The Field of 68 legal analyst Mitch Gilfillan, who explains: “He argues Plaintiffs are alleging a Pay-for-Play deal which is an NCAA violation and against public policy. Also argues oral contracts are improper under the statute of frauds. Further argument, Hamilton states plaintiffs impermissibly attempted to circumvent the statute of frauds with their alleged tort claims. Last, Hamilton believes claims are barred under the sovereign immunity doctrine. Typically, state employees have immunity for certain claims. Plaintiffs (former FSU players) will file a response to the motion to dismiss. Absent the court ordering discovery, the motion to dismiss hearing probably will be in 60 days or so.” (link)

The Athletic’s Lindsay Schnell takes a look at how switching to an optic yellow ball ushered in a hitter’s era in college softball. Since making the switch in 1993, home runs per game have risen from 0.16 to 0.61 with a peak of 0.77 in 2015. Meanwhile, pitchers’ ERAs have increased from 2.37 to 3.75. Former UCLA Softball HC Sue Enquist recalls that at the time, “there were a lot of people who were worried about ‘ruining the integrity of the game,’ and they claimed it was dangerous because now the ball is going to be coming off the bat more, and the pitcher would be vulnerable. But in my mind, anything that could create more excitement for the fan was going to be a good thing. … There is no other women’s sport that loves the 98-pound slapper as much as it loves the 292-pound catcher. This sport provides access to such a diverse group of body types, and all of them can be successful. That a No. 8 hitter can change the complexion of the game, that’s exciting to me.” Meanwhile, Schnell notes the yellow ball is not the only thing that helps hitters in 2025: “Talk to any softball coach, pitcher or batter, and they’ll all agree: The strike zone in college softball is unbelievably tight.” Arkansas student-athlete Bri Ellis, who hit 26 home runs this season, tells Schnell: “Pitchers have to be so precise, they basically have to be perfect to get a called strike. I go watch baseball and it’s like, jeez, you guys have to swing at so much! The zone (in baseball) is so much bigger. In softball, you can sit there and not swing for an entire at-bat and probably get on base (with a walk.)” While there’s been discussion about possibly moving the fences back, Enquist believes it’s unrealistic due to budget constraints.
