The Honolulu Star Advertiser’s Dave Reardon believes Central Pacific Bank SVP/CPB Foundation Executive Director Keith Amemiya should be the next AD at Hawaii. Reardon points to Amemiya previously running the Hawaii High School Athletic Association where he led key fundraising initiatives & continues to do “via his presidency of the Downtown Athletic Club of Hawaii and as Gov. Josh Green’s appointed sports expert, he helps lead the Luna Strong effort. It helps Lahainaluna’s sports teams continue to compete despite losing most of their athletic equipment in the wildfires of 2023.” More Reardon: “Amemiya does have experience with the Aloha Stadium Authority, which he served on from 2015 to 2021. That, and his relationship with Green, should help with the new stadium construction. And those are two credentials no AD candidate from out-of-state can claim. Detractors might say Amemiya is 0-for-4 in recent years — two political elections, and two previous runs at UH athletic director. I see those as attributes. He is persistent, and his skin is thickened. Any college athletic director, no matter how successful, needs that. Most of all, there is no denying where Keith Amemiya’s heart is.” (link)

Longtime The News Journal's Sports Writer/Columnist Kevin Tresolini sat down with D1.extra’s Kristen Eargle to discuss the AD opening at Delaware. Tresolini notes the Blue Hens are likely to make its hire of a new President, which is still some ways off, before moving on the AD front. On what characteristics are needed to push Delaware athletics forward as it transitions to Conference USA & FBS competition: “They do have plans for more upgrades, more expensive upgrades. They would like to enclose the north end of Delaware Stadium and attach it to a new indoor office and practice and locker room facility. That’s been talked about for about four years. They haven’t even gone public with it yet, because of the transition to FBS and all the changes across college athletics. [...] The big challenge will be making more money because now you have to share with student-athletes.” Lots more, including Tresolini’s belief that Interim AD Jordan Skolnick is fully capable of successfully leading the department due to being the “right hand man” to former AD Chrissi Rawak. Another AD opening at the moment is in Flagstaff as Northern Arizona will hire a new leader at some point in the coming months. AthleticDirectorU recently published its new Athletic Department Power Index for the Big Sky as dozens of c-suite leaders across the league - and others connected to the Big Sky - provided perspectives on the viability of each AD job in the conference. The Lumberjacks topped the rankings in two categories: Ability for Olympic sport success compared to league peers and quality of living. Overall, NAU was fourth or better in every category except the ability to have Men’s Basketball success compared to league peers. Montana State & Montana led the league in most categories. Check out all the data here. (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown notes that the “core question” of enforcement in college sports hasn’t really changed during the course of the House settlement and observes: “It is in the competitive interest for member schools to find ways around the proposed regulations as soon as possible, because coaches and P4 ADs don’t get extensions for exemplary compliance performance. They get it from wins, and you have a better chance at winning more if you have the best players, amateurism guidelines or settlement terms be damned. The only way you prevent programs from breaking mutually agreed upon rules is if you have an enforcement mechanism that is predictable and sustainable. Whether the proposed House settlement creates that mechanism depends not on what Judge Wilken thinks, or Deloitte, or Greg Sankey, or Steve Berman. It depends on whether the clearinghouse (and other caps) survive legal challenges. Could be on antitrust grounds, Title IX grounds, or a litany of other legal factors.” Furthermore, Brown wonders if “we’re in a world where these policy questions are at least partly the domain of the federal government, and where courts are giving increasing latitude to the desires of the executive branch, is all of this essentially moot if Trump decides what the outcome should be? Or if everything ends up in various legal appeals for the next six years? … The way I see it, the future of college sports recruiting, roster management and administration is increasingly a political question, not an administrative or an athletic question. And the thing about political questions is…well…they increasingly don’t follow the same laws of gravity that sports stories do.” (link)

Now live on Connect: East Tennessee State AD Dr. Richard Sander sat down with Tai. M Brown for an in-depth conversation about Sander’s endeavors in leadership, creating development opportunities for professionals, and the beginnings of the Global Sport Leadership Program and its impact on the profession. Regarding the Global Sport Leadership program, Sander notes that earning a doctorate was a differentiator for his career. “I think you’re perceived differently when you have a terminal degree. I think that helps anybody as they move forward in their career, but I think we all want to try to differentiate ourselves. I think for us the critical piece was this is practitioner-based. There’s no question about it. I built the curriculum based on my career, what I've done in the past, talking to other ADs, talking to other people that work in the industry and kind of aggregated a lot of that data to formulate the curriculum.” Sander adds that “we had to prove to a lot of academics that this program had enough academic rigor. … We did and we had to kind of balance that ball and have enough academic rigor., but we really wanted it to be one that advanced the student’s career.” Full Q&A. According to KBTX’s Travis Brown, the dip in contributions to Texas A&M’s 12th Man Foundation “comes from completing the foundation’s Centennial Campaign for new athletic facilities in April 2023.” FY23, in which the 12th Man Foundation reported contributions and grants totaling $113.1M, was the last to include funds earmarked for the Centennial Campaign, per Brown, who adds: “Elsewhere in the foundation’s tax filings, Maroon & White LP, the parent company of TexAgs, was listed as the organization’s top independent contractor. Maroon & White received $1.1M for external marketing services. Learfield, which currently holds Texas A&M’s multimedia rights, was third on the list, receiving $661,180 for marketing services. … Advertising with TexAgs, which engages in NIL interviews through its in-house Texas Aggies United collective, is a legal method to use unrestricted foundation dollars to support NIL efforts with A&M athletes, the foundation said in its annual report. According to the report, more than $4M was spent on these marketing efforts in fiscal year 2024, which included advertising at athletic venues, fan website sponsorships, radio shows, and student-athlete appearances at 12th Man Foundation events. The foundation expects that spending will continue to grow.” (link)

JohnWallStreet submits that the “only way for ESPN, or any other cable network, to become profitable with a streaming service is to cut costs and/or force the consumer to pay a lot for the offering. And no single media company has enough programming to do the latter at a level necessary to maintain programming (and programming costs) as if they were still in the old monopolized system.” Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes explains that “bundling is the way you get more digital scale and do it at a price that enables strong margins.” However, JWS notes that to “re-bundle effectively, media companies must have the requisite assets. Soon Disney will. … It’s not difficult to envision a future landscape where fans can cobble together bundles from a collective of 20+ content services (think: WBD and Fox’s sports programming or DirecTV’s sports package) and service offerings (think: broadband, digital security, or robo-taxis)–each with ESPN DTC at the center of it.” Crakes tells JWS that Disney’s Fubo merger “crossed the Rubicon for them.” It was Disney publicly saying, “We [need to] build out our digital distribution assets so they can be [packaged] with content and services outside the company, [let’s] bundle what we can internally, and really get aggressive with the strategy.” Disney “doesn’t necessarily have to sell a bunch of subs in the next couple of years for ESPN DTC to be successful,” according to Crakes, and JWS explains that’s because the “larger goal is to begin experimenting with re-bundling content, specifically beyond the Disney portfolio.” (link)

@1QLeadership Question: How can college athletics departments best support student-athletes transition out of competitive sports, particularly the challenges of athlete identity and life after sports?
Caitlin Broadwell, Athletics Case Manager at Long Beach State, discusses the curriculum used in a class for senior student-athletes on campus. The semester-long class focuses on values, developing community, finding hobbies away from sports, and other foundation building aspects that help athletes feel better prepared for retiring from competition and the inevitable "Athlete Identity Syndrome" that comes with retirement.
Broadwell, on her way to becoming a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, developed the curriculum used in the semester-long class for senior student-athletes. She was a multi-school and multi-sport transfer, finishing her career as a beach volleyball player at LSU. With experience from playing, research, and practical knowledge, Broadwell brings passion and purpose to the mental-health in athletics industry.

Sources tell Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde: “The NCAA DI Council has recommended expedited legislation next month regarding an elimination on the prohibition on wagering on professional sports, in addition to developing concepts to explore safe harbor, limited immunity or reduced penalties for athletes who engage in sports wagering but seek help for problem gambling.” (link)

More from the Division I Decision-Making Working Group presentation of draft concepts for a streamlined sport oversight committee structure and draft decentralized regulatory framework. The current sport committees would “manage the entirety of a sport ecosystem. The committees would be responsible for championship administration, for playing rules, as well as the identified regulatory areas,” including personnel and playing and practice seasons. “Those will be adjusted based on the decisions around what should be national rules. … The initial discussion is that the composition would include guaranteed seats for autonomy conferences that are eligible for an automatic qualification in the sport, the success element that exists today and at-large positions.” In sports where all four Power 4 leagues compete, their seats would be weighed while other seats’ votes would be equal to 1. In sports where all four do not compete, all voting weights would be equal to 1. The working group will meet again next month and expects to deliver a proposal to the DI Board for consideration. JohnCanzano.com’s publisher gets this from Oregon AD Rob Mullens on waiting for the House settlement to be finalized: "We’ve been unregulated for a few years. This is all happening fast. This is supposed to go live July 1, and we don’t have the final set of rules yet." (link)

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R - Tex.) on reporting by CBS’ Brandon Marcello & John Talty regarding the potential for a Trump administration college sports commission: “This article is nonsense. Cody & Nick are terrific and both good friends. I welcome the commission, hope that it gets formed as soon as possible, and encourage the President to do so.” (link); Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell responded to Cruz on X: “This is very good news. We all need to work together and set aside selfish agendas, tribalism, and politics to preserve the life-changing opportunity that College Sports provide to more than 500,000 young people in this country.” (link)

The Athletic’s Ralph Russo, Christopher Kamrani & Matt Moret update on reactions to the Trump administration’s potential ban on Harvard enrolling international students & the impact on athletics: “Harvard’s athletic department and athletic director declined comment but did point to a statement President Alan Garber sent to the Harvard community in which he said the Trump administration’s actions were nothing more than a retaliation against the university for ‘our refusal to surrender our academic independence and to submit to the federal government’s illegal assertion of control over our curriculum, our faculty, and our student body.’ [...] The NCAA declined to comment on the situation, but it could be facing questions about what to do if the school’s international athletes want to transfer because of the ongoing dispute between the university and the Trump administration. A spokesperson from the Ivy League Athletic Conference also declined to comment.” More. (link)

DawgNation’s Mike Griffith reflects on Georgia AD Josh Brooks’ nearly five years at the helm and posits that it’s “not a stretch to consider Brooks one of the most proven, involved and successful athletic directors in collegiate athletics.” Brooks downplays his role, noting that “they aren’t asking me to pitch, they’re not asking me to bat, shoot the ball or call plays. I’m just the lucky person that gets to sit in this chair and gets to support [the coaches]. … If I’ve learned anything, it’s never about me, it’s about the student-athletes, coaches and staff. If I hire great coaches and staff members, then my job is to make their jobs easier, but get out of their way.” Griffith, though, observes that “it’s safe to say that Brooks, once an equipment manager in Nick Saban’s LSU football program, a student assistant for then-assistant Jimbo Fisher, a graduate assistant at Louisiana-Monroe and a football operations director at UGA under Mark Richt, understands the dynamics of strong leadership. … Brooks serves on the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee and is the vice chair of practicing and playing season. Brooks doesn’t just have a handle on what’s going on in collegiate athletics, he’s also helping to shape it with his input.” (link)

The Des Moines Register’s Alyssa Hertel highlights Drake AD Brian Hardin’s ability to effectively communicate with coaches, and Bulldogs Men’s Soccer HC Pat Flinn recalls the first email he received from Hardin: “It felt like an email coming from somebody that knew me, even though he and I had never spoken to each other.” Once they did meet to discuss the role, Flinn recalls being in the car with Hardin when Hardin took a quick phone call. Flinn remembered Hardin mentioning something about the basketball team, and that led the pair to talk about former men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries, and Hertel notes: “Hardin explained to Flinn how DeVries came to Drake with a blueprint of how to bring success to the Bulldogs. DeVries executed that blueprint, and Hardin did what any good athletic director would do: He remained confident in his hiring decision and stayed out of his head coach’s way.” Flinn subsequently notes: “I felt like that was a challenge to me. So I laid out a very thorough and specific outline of exactly what I was going to do to recruit, to fundraise, to build culture here at Drake. I’m following through on what I said I was going to do, and it’s working. Things are moving in the right direction with men’s soccer. I feel very free here. If I call Brian with an issue, he would support me through it. But I’m not being micromanaged.” Flinn also says of Hardin: “Brian trusts himself. He knows Drake; he knows what it takes to be successful here. He knows what our limitations are.” More from Hertel. (link)

North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham and Deputy AD/Chief Revenue Officer Rick Barakat presented several potential enhancements to both Kenan Stadium and the football program’s gameday presentation to the university’s Board of Trustees Wednesday. Highlights from that presentation include the ongoing discussion with the firm Independent Sports and Entertainment (ISE) for a naming rights deal for the stadium; Barakat’s comment: “Tunnel covers, new team benches, you name it. We’re trying to turn over every rock and find new ways to drive revenue.”; potential jersey patches for Tar Heel teams; the proposed installation of a beer garden; a concert series; an expanded stadium concourse and more. Additionally, football season tickets have sold out. Overall, ticket sales are up roughly 35% YOY, with an anticipated growth of 50% once single-game tickets go on sale later in the year. (link)

San Diego AD Kimya Massey joins USD’s “At the Edge of It All” podcast to discuss sports science and notes that “we don’t have as much sports science as a lot of schools do. So I've asked [coaches] to tell me everything you're doing already, but [also] what would you like to do in your ideal world. Let’s look at costs, let's pull that all together and let's figure out a solution. We need a sports science program and we really don't have one, and I think that's something that can allow you to either catch up or get ahead if you're doing it effectively and [are] able to understand the data and articulate it in an easy way for the 18- to 23-year olds we work with.” When it comes to AI, Massey explains the Toreros’ usage so far has been more focused on the creative side – “digital, video content things like that. I do think there's some efficiencies there where AI can create some models that are created in a way that we ultimately have to edit, revise before we go out publicly with things, but there are some efficiencies. … I think understanding how it actually works in a way that's going to basically complement what you're already doing is really the goal, but I do think there's still a learning curve in terms of how do we use it effectively and use it with integrity.” (link)

House Bill 126, drafted by Rep. Carl Tepper (R-District 84) and which will “bring Texas universities in line with the pending House v. NCAA settlement,” passed through the Texas Senate Education K-16 Committee on a 9-1 vote Thursday and now awaits a Senate vote and signature from Governor Greg Abbott. The bill “widens existing NIL legislation so that athletes to be paid NIL compensation directly from their universities, while they are performing team-sanctioned events or to be used as inducement for enrollment at a school. It also contains a clause that allows new NCAA rules or court orders to supersede the state law, circumventing the need to update NIL law every two years.” Pending all approvals, it could take effect September 1, 2025. Disney is suing YouTube for “poaching” President of Platform Distribution Justin Connolly, according to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, who reports: “Disney filed suit against YouTube in state court in Los Angeles to stop the appointment, claiming breach of contract, interference in a contractual relationship and unfair competition. In the complaint, Disney said Connolly signed a new three-year contract in November 2024 that included a one-time right to terminate in March 2027. The company is seeking preliminary and permanent injunctions.” Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal’s Joe Flint reports that “in April 2025, Disney became aware of YouTube’s offer of employment to Connolly (per the suit). This news came at a critical time in Connolly’s tenure as President of Platform Distribution for Disney. Disney is in the midst of several important product launches and renegotiation of some of its largest distribution deals, and Connolly has been the architect of Disney’s distribution strategy and its principal negotiator. Critically, Connolly leads the Disney team negotiating a license renewal with YouTube. Connolly has intimate knowledge of Disney’s other distribution deals, the financial details concerning Disney’s content being licensed to YouTube, and Disney’s negotiation strategies, both in general and in particular with respect to YouTube. It would be extremely prejudicial to Disney for Connolly to breach the contract which he negotiated just a few months ago and switch teams when Disney is working on a new licensing deal with the company that is trying to poach him.” (link)
