Sankey Speaks…
+ The SEC has “not committed to any particular format” on football scheduling, according to Commissioner Greg Sankey, who kicked off the league’s spring meetings yesterday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes that decision is likely a function of the College Football Playoff format and that Sankey “stressed that the so-called 4-4-2-2-1-3 model, which distributes one automatic bid to the non-power leagues and three available at-large bids – one potentially for Notre Dame if it falls within the seeding threshold – has not been decided on in his room.” Sankey: "We'll see how that conversation manifests itself this week and we'll look a little bit more deeply at different ideas, which will put me at some point in a better position to answer those questions. … 16 [teams] has had more traction in my league than anticipated a year ago and…over the last six months, 16 became much more central in conversation. As I said, we’re interested, not committed.” Sankey would like to see the regular season continue to be prioritized irrespective of the new CFP format while keeping postseason hopes alive late into the season. "I think the word 'hope' is at the center, too. How do you bring people into the conversation late in the season in a changing environment, and so the idea of, 'Could you have play-in-type games?' continues to populate itself before you're in the CFP selection. That's about building interest and giving hope. Whether that's the ultimate destination, we'll see. … We're trying to find a format to determine, whatever number it is, the best teams in college football, and I think where we are right now is we have used a political process inside a room to come to decisions about football. We should be using football information to come to football decisions." (link, link)
+ According to Thamel, Sankey made clear his “disappointment in the reactions of the ACC and Big 12 commissioners to the move to a straight seeding model announced last week. Both commissioners referenced the macro good of the game in responses, with the ACC's Jim Phillips saying that's a ‘responsibility I take very seriously’ and the Big 12's Brett Yormark saying he hopes what's best for college football is ‘the priority’ in discussions moving forward.” Sankey in his own words: “I don't need lectures from others about 'good of the game.' I don't lecture others about good of the game and coordinating press releases about good of the game. OK, you can issue your press statement, but I'm actually looking for ideas to move us forward." (link)
+ Sankey on the House settlement: "I learned a long time ago we don’t control the court system. So, is there a hope? Is there a thought? Do people say it would be decided at this point? Yes. Do we have a responsibility for implementation, so we’ll pivot what we say this week? Yes. Does it mean we’re gonna keep preparing? We’re gonna keep preparing to see the judge’s final decision.” (link, link)
+ Sankey also remarked the way the CFP selection committee seems to weigh strength of schedule shortchanges the conference slate, which doesn’t include any teams among the lower half of the 134 NCAA FBS programs. “Here’s my problem. But for maybe one, maybe two teams in a year, we don’t have 65 or 66 and everybody else has a group, it’s 60 and below. That has to be considered by us in making our schedule, by the CFP, and by the CFP itself in evaluating selection criteria.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Ralph Russo notes that Sankey voiced concerns about SEC teams being displaced from the CFP field by lower-ranked teams due to format requirements based on having greater conference representation. “If you actually go back and do the research, that kind of format could cost us positions depending on the number of teams. I don’t see the critics actually digging in to understand that reality. I don’t see the critics actually analyzing like I’ve just described, how schedules are evaluated. So the critics can run to the microphones and share their opinions. We’re trying to find a format to determine, whatever number it is, the best teams in college football.” (link)
+ On3’s Andy Staples proposes that Sankey “intends to weaponize other leagues’ desire for the SEC to play nine conference games instead of eight. This has always been held up as a fairness argument with SEC haters denouncing the league for taking the easy way out. In reality, Sankey has been trying to push his schools toward a nine-game conference schedule for years. The reasons are financial, not altruistic. But Sankey actually does agree with the Michigan and Ohio State and Oklahoma State fans complaining on their message boards about the SEC playing only eight conference games. … And he’s going to offer to trade that. Give the SEC those four automatic bids, and his schools will play nine conference games. And they’ll continue to schedule tough out-of-conference opponents. … In other words, Sankey probably is going to wind up getting what he and his league want because he’s going to ask something like this of his fellow commissioners: Would you rather have the SEC teams playing eight game conference schedules, getting five or six teams into the CFP and not scheduling more hard non-conference games? Or would you rather have the SEC teams playing nine conference games, getting four teams into the CFP and scheduling the tastiest non-conference games?” (link)

Oregon AD Rob Mullens on the future of the Civil War football rivalry with Oregon State: “That game matters to us and our state and to our fans. We’re fortunate that we have that game at Autzen Stadium this year. The two years after that are a little complicated. We’re still continuing to have dialogue with Oregon State. We’d love to make that happen. … We don’t have a solution yet, but I do see that game continuing in the future for sure.” More from Mullens, including this on congressional help for NIL: “It would be great to have some real clarity from a federal standpoint on exactly the laws and rules we’re playing within, because everybody wants to be competitive, and some states are willing to be more competitive than others, all the way down to we’re not going to have income tax on NIL deals. So I do think a federal set of regulations would be helpful.” (link)

Southeastern Louisiana AD/Baseball Committee Chair Jay Artigues discusses the thinking behind several decisions in filling out this year’s championship field. On Creighton being the only Big East team in: “If you look at UConn, the Big East after the top three, it doesn’t have another team in the top 100 (of RPI), and that kind of hurts them, and look, I’m speaking from experience at Southeastern (Louisiana), with the bottom half of that conference, sometimes RPIs bring it down. UConn started out 13-7, then they won 25 of the last 29, but only seven of those games were against top 100 RPI teams. When the committee looked at the last four or five teams, they felt like those teams were ahead of UConn, and UConn was 3-6 against the top teams in that conference. So they really got all those wins against teams with an RPI of 100 and lower. There was a lot of talk about Xavier, and they challenged themselves, and non-conference strength of schedule is very important. But you do have to win those games, some of those games at least. If you look at Xavier, in one trip they played, I think it was Tennessee, LSU, Southeastern Louisiana and Vanderbilt. They went 0-6 and they got outscored nine to 63 or 68, so it was really lopsided, not even competitive in that. So if you (have) the non-conference strength of schedule, which is really important, you do have to win some of them.” (link); Artigues also acknowledges the schedule strength and conference size of the Power 4 leagues are only making it more difficult for those outside the P4 to make the field. “That’s coming from a mid-major guy. You see us [SE Louisiana] on the bubble as well. It makes it very challenging. And it really makes for some serious conversations toward the end.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher fields several questions, including one about whether the Mountain West will merge with the Pac-12, as has been claimed by some MW fans. Canzano replies: “I don’t think MW fans are crazy, necessarily. I think they’re wishing and hoping. But their logic doesn’t hold up. Why would the five departing schools leave the bottom of the MW behind in a desire to form a clear ‘best of the rest’ conference, then scrap the plan and merge? Makes no sense. … The conference lopped off the top half of the Mountain West. It wants to be the clear and undisputed No. 5 conference in the country. Beyond maybe taking UNLV, I don’t see the new-look Pac-12 having an appetite for more MW schools.” Regarding whether the Big 12 will look to add UNLV to enter the Las Vegas market, Canzano is doubtful. For one, he believes the league can accomplish its goal of exposure in the West Coast market by holding “tentpole events” in Las Vegas and other cities. Beyond that, Canzano submits: “I don’t think Las Vegas adds enough media value to the Big 12’s current contract to be a no-brainer addition. The Rebels, in TV market No. 40, would be subsidized by the rest of the Big 12. I wonder if the presidents want another mouth to feed. Big Ten football media day is going to be held in Las Vegas this summer. I won’t be surprised if Tony Petitti uses the platform to talk about bringing his football championship game to Las Vegas. The Big Ten title game is set for Lucas Oil Stadium through 2028.” (link)

Army West Point Deputy AD/Chief Leadership Officer/SWA Tricia Brandenburg and St. Thomas Senior Assoc. AD & SWA/former Minnesota Deputy AD/SWA Julie Manning joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown for a discussion about establishing influence and creating impact throughout their careers. Manning and Brandenburg also cover topics including strategic thinking as executive leaders, talent development and building a staff, and advice for aspiring leaders, including being present, trusting the process, and finding ways to say yes. Manning believes it “does become your responsibility as you mature in this industry to try to help identify younger, perhaps less experienced, women in our industry, on our campuses, in our departments. And like everyone, you always sort of have an eye out for talent and it becomes obvious who is very interested in this work, who would do a great job, who’s dedicated, who's passionate, who values the experience of higher education. They start to become obvious and so you want to spend time with them, you want to engage with them. You hope that they're curious and eventually I think you really start to lead them into eventually your chair to fulfill that. So that's at the forefront of my mind now more than ever as I start to look at the latter half of my career.” Brandenburg talks about measuring outcomes of the athletic department’s programming and notes that being in a military environment, “we have access to data in ways that I didn’t have access to. So, trying to leverage the talent that we have in our faculty is something we’re still working on. It is something we’re working on actively in terms of tracking who we recruit and what those outcomes are and trying to figure out if there are things that might be predictive of success in the West Point environment.” More on ADU. + Despite some unexpected results in conference tournaments that could’ve knocked them out of the field, Kentucky secured its third consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament, triggering an automatic one-year extension for Baseball HC Nick Mingione, whose contract now runs through the 2030 season, when he will be paid $1.975M, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader’s Jon Hale. As SEC leaders gather in Destin for spring meetings, Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger observes this week will be different than many, if not most, of its antecedents: “Back in the day, this thing was four days of mostly monotonous legislative meetings. Lots of golf. Plenty of poolside cocktails. And bunches of beach time. … Nowadays, SEC meetings are three days of intense policy-making discussions oozing with heavy subject matter. There is little to no golf. Few cocktails. And an absence of beach time.” With topics ranging from the College Football Playoff to the House settlement, Dellenger adds that “SEC old-timers believe it to be the most consequential gathering in the history of the conference.” During its meetings last week in Los Angeles, Big Ten administrators solidified their support for the so-called "4-4-2-2-1" CFP format, and the SEC this week has a chance to do the same. And what if they do? “I guess we’re going to war,” says one Big 12 AD. The SEC this week is also expected to discuss the “governance proposal and the possibility of separating football completely out from under the NCAA,” and Dellenger points out that “in an unreported and little-known fact, SEC presidents in March quietly authorized their commissioner, [Greg] Sankey, to split from the NCAA if he deems that the right move.” In examining the future of college sports more broadly, Dellenger asks whether athletic departments will remain under the $20.5M rev-share cap. “Or will they support their booster collectives in flooding the new Deloitte-run NIL clearinghouse with multi-million dollar deals for their athletes as a way to circumvent the cap? Illinois AD Josh Whitman notes: “We have to decide if we want to be governed.” Baylor AD Mack Rhoades adds: “I’ll say this, it has to work. For this to be a good settlement, that component has to work and I think it is the most important.” (link)

Southern Conference Commissioner Michael Cross talks with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy about his recent position paper on the future of college sports governance. Cross explains his proposal is built on three key themes: 1) Freedom for the conferences or schools to create rules previously attributed to the national office; 2) A narrow segment of regulation that is centrally governed; and 3) Aligning commensurate responsibility to those granted authority. Cross: “Every single rule that we create [at a national level], the first reflexive action from the coaches and administrators is, ‘How do I work around this rule?’ The easiest way to work around the rule is stop making rules.” Issues that should be centrally governed would include revenue and championship access – Cross tells Portnoy he’s “open to a discussion” about how revenue is distributed. Eligibility, financial aid and other issues could then be left up to the conferences and schools. On the issue of eligibility, Cross notes: “Villanova this year, I believe, is going to have a 32-year-old punter on its roster. The quarterback from Louisville who was just drafted [Tyler Shough] was 26 or 27. You’ll have people who say, ‘Oh gosh, are we really going to have people who are these different ages competing against each other?’ We already do. I understand it intellectually, but we’ve got so many waivers and processes in place, and the pattern repeats itself over and over and over: We pass a rule. Rule doesn’t fit every set of circumstances. School submits waiver on behalf of student-athlete. NCAA denies waiver. Public and media get inflamed and call NCAA ‘heartless administrators.’ Student-athlete lawyers up, finds other student-athletes who have similar circumstances and also lawyer up, and we’re back into this phase.” (link)

Sticking to Baseball, last week Florida State AD Michael Alford, who is the incoming chair of the Baseball Committee, says he plans to work with umpires on utilizing analytics as a teaching tool “because we’ve gotten to the spot in that sport where we have those metrics. Memphis men’s basketball student-athlete PJ Haggerty has withdrawn his name from the NBA Draft and will transfer to Kansas State, according to hoops insider/New York Times contributor Adam Zagoria, who cites a source as indicating that “Haggerty is getting $2M base guaranteed NIL at K-State plus another $500K in incentives for a total value of $2.5M.” (link, link)

New Haven President Jens Frederiksen talks with the Hartford Courant’s Dom Amore about the move to Division I and insists UNH was ready to begin the process: “There’s a huge difference between being ready and getting ready. You make a decision and you lay out plans and then you have to adjust on the fly. For as many moves as we’ve made, the bumps have been relatively small and we’ve proven we will make adjustments to the bumps very quickly. That was to be expected, but we were absolutely as ready as we could have been. Sometimes you uncover things in the act of getting ready. There is a timeline, there’s excitement, then there’s, ‘Oh, I can’t believe that happened.’ There is going to be ‘Have they thought of this?’ … I feel very comfortable saying all of this is going to be allayed very quickly.” Many of the school’s athletic facilities have been updated in recent years, and Frederiksen maintains the Chargers are not undertaking projects without firm financial backing. “I’m generally very conservative, fiscally, I don’t come across that way. There are some schools that want things to happen so badly, so they build a stadium and say ‘The donors will come.’ Schools like ours can’t afford to be in that position. … With athletics, I went through a full-fledged cost analysis very quickly. I put the numbers together, not based on ‘three years from now we might get this.’ That’s how people get themselves in trouble. I’ve had the modicum of success that I’ve had because I do treat it like a midsized business.” Frederiksen also explains his vision for the integration of athletics and academics: “I would like to see that our athletes receive the same kind of academic outcome as our other students. I want it to feel vibrant, successful. You want to win, but I want it to be a department much like the culture, all-hands-on, can-do, really pushing the envelope. Let’s be bold.” (link)

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez commends New Mexico State for its “valiant efforts to confront and eliminate hazing on campus. In response to our report...NMSU has taken swift and decisive action, completing nearly two-thirds of the 35 recommendations outlined by our office and making substantial progress on the rest. I encourage every university in New Mexico to review this report and adopt similar reforms to foster safer, more supportive environments for their students." Acting Aggies AD Amber Burdge indicated in a statement that the state DOJ report “provided a valuable opportunity for reflection, and more importantly, further action. We've taken meaningful steps over the past two years – from enhancing our exit survey processes and increasing communication with Title IX to department-wide training and prevention programming – to build a stronger, safer athletics environment. This work is ongoing, and I remain committed to leading with clarity, consistency and care as we move forward." NMSU says it has satisfied 21 of the 35 recommendations while the other 14 are in progress/process. President Valerio Ferme: “There's still work to be done to ensure our campuses are places where everyone, especially students, can safely pursue their educational and professional goals. We have an incredibly devoted group of leaders who are committed to making us better, and we will continue to dedicate time and resources to address hazing and harassment to the best of our abilities.” (link)

VH Consulting Founder and multi-stop administrator Shoshanna Engel Lewis sat down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the transition from athletics to entrepreneurship and offer insight into strategic thinking and leadership development. Engel Lewis reflects on her career and how she recognized and developed her collection of “superpowers” throughout her various stops. Those superpowers – the ability to create authentic connection quickly and support others as they seek to solve problems – led to the moment when “circumstance met opportunity” in her career path, spurring the creation of a consulting firm that allowed her to blend those strengths to serve needs that leaders were facing in a changing industry. Engel Lewis also acknowledges that hearing “no” at times provided an opportunity for self-reflection and creative thinking. Engel Lewis notes that she did not get into compliance in college athletics “because I loved the rules. … I view it as a puzzle to solve. How can we leverage the rules to get us where we’re trying to go? So, I at least wanted to mention that because I saw it differently. I saw it as an opportunity to not get pigeon-holed, which is very contrary to what most people say about compliance.” In fact, Engel Lewis explains she chose compliance as an initial career path “not because I love the rules, not because I love spreadsheets and organizing information. … I did it because I thought, ‘Wow,’ I can get to know who everyone in our athletics department is, what their jobs are, and what those jobs mean to college athletics and what they mean to the university.’ So it was a really strategic move to leverage connecting, the ability to understand, develop authentic relationships and then keep in touch with so many of those folks to this day.” Full Q&A on ADU. While undergraduate enrollment remains slightly below 2020 levels, college enrollment as a whole is making a steady recovery, driven in part by growth in certificate programs and at two-year public institutions, according to new data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, whose latest report shows 18.4M students were enrolled in higher education this spring, a 3.2% YoY increase. Specifically, undergraduate enrollment rose 3.5% from spring 2024 but remains down 2.4% from 2020. Similarly, graduate enrollment grew 1.5 % to 3.1M students over spring 2024, marking a 7.2% uptick from 2020. The report also shows that young adults are enrolling in higher education at greater rates with a 3.2% increase among 21- to 24-year-olds compared to last spring, and a 5.9% increase among 25- to 29-year-olds. This spring is the first time since 2020 that 20-somethings have seen year-over-year growth. Public four-year colleges saw a 2.5% increase in enrollment, bringing the total number of students to 7.4M, slightly higher than the pre-pandemic level. Private four-year nonprofit institutions saw a 5.3% increase while for-profit institutions a 1.4% gain. (link)
