Michigan State will up the annual salary for its next athletic director from the roughly $900K that Alan Haller made to potentially the "$1.5M" range, according to The Detroit News’ Tony Paul, who adds that this raise in salary suggests the Spartans are in pursuit of a big-time "name" hire for the role. Paul also reports the new AD could be in place by mid-June. (link)

Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde submits that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti “are considered an enemy of the majority of the 136 schools at the FBS level” in part because of their positions on the future of the College Football Playoff format. “Petitti, who has a network TV background, doesn’t seem too terribly concerned with that label. For Sankey, a lifelong college administrator who has rolled up his sleeves and done the tedious and occasionally controversial work on a multitude of committees, that probably stings.” Sankey remarked yesterday that “I think I have a responsibility to push, and I think my [SEC] membership has a responsibility and a desire to push me. And that is a hard issue if you want to go inside what it's like to sit in this role. I think about the responsibility I have here [to the league] and I think about the responsibility more broadly all the time. We'll continue to try to provide perspective and information to our members and help them guide the decision. And ultimately, I recognize I'm the one who ends up typically in front of a podium explaining not just myself but ourselves. So good luck to me.” Meanwhile, Forde points out that U.S. Congressman Brendan Boyle (D-PA) “fired a social-media shot across the bow after hearing some of Sankey’s stances Monday: ‘Let me state this as clearly as I can: the Big Ten and SEC should be very, very careful about some of the decisions they are about to make. Because they appear hellbent on ruining major college football. I think they need congressional hearings into their collusion.’ Given how desperately college sports leaders have been courting Congress for help in the form of an antitrust exemption that would prevent an employee-employer relationship with athletes—which could bankrupt many programs—threats from Capitol Hill should be taken seriously.” (link)

USA Today’s Dan Wolken contends that the inability to come to an agreement about the College Football Playoff format is emblematic of a larger problem that has long existed in college sports: namely, the inability to self-govern. “It’s not that the people who work in college sports lack the intellectual capacity to understand that these tiny, perceived competitive advantages from school to school and conference to conference are ultimately inconsequential to their collective business interests. Their culture simply doesn’t allow them to see the big picture through a froth of constant concern that one of their competitors is pulling a fast one. … Intelligent, well-educated men and women making seven figures to be executives of a sports league are being reduced to children in a fight over playground territory because they overthink themselves into paranoia that one decision on the margins of a $1.3B annual enterprise is going to be unfair to them.” Wolken goes on to submit that “if this is how difficult it’s going to be for the SEC and Big Ten to reach an accord with the ACC and Big 12 over something that should be driven by common sense, what chance in hell do they have of pulling together and fixing the truly difficult issues swallowing their industry? … What gums up progress in college sports isn’t an ideological battle between the big schools and the small schools over the direction of the NCAA and how flexible its rules should be. It is, was and has always been the inability of the big schools to treat each other fundamentally as business partners rather than competitors.” (link)

Bruin Capital Founder & CEO George Pyne weighs in on how NIL is forcing the college system to change: “The amount of money is just so overwhelming. If you take a college playoff game, TV rights are $84M. At the gate is going to be another $20M or $30M. And you're generating $120M for three hours, shouldn’t the people on the field participate in the money? I estimate college football generates somewhere between $6B and $8B. Should the people playing the game participate? I think that’s what it’s evolved to. Initially, I think courts were deferential to the college model, but the money is just so overwhelming that the system has a chance to evolve. Now, it’s so overwhelming because people really like it and the product’s fantastic, but how the money’s shared, and how it’s all operated, needs to be reinvented and right now it hasn’t been figured out yet. And it’s going through some real growing pains.” (link)

Lehigh is adding women's wrestling as its 26th varsity sport, with official competition beginning in the 2025-26 academic year. Mountain Hawks AD Jeremy Gibson: "Lehigh has a proud and storied tradition in wrestling, with our men's program nationally recognized for both its competitive success and its commitment to developing scholar-athletes. Elevating women's wrestling to varsity status is a natural and exciting next step for Lehigh University and our athletics department. This decision reflects our deep commitment to equitable opportunities for all student-athletes and to sustaining excellence – both on the mat and in the classroom.” (link)

The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released an open letter to its membership reaffirming that it is “leading from the front” as NCAA athletics reorients itself in the wake of a pending House settlement decision. From the missive, which is signed by Executive Director Samantha Barany: “We are witnessing the gradual dismantling of one of college athletics’ greatest strengths: opportunity. Since the announcement of the proposed House settlement – and before it has even been approved – 36 Olympic sport programs have already been cut, eliminating 1,017 opportunities for student-athletes. [...] This is not the end. I’ve spoken directly with athletic administrators who anticipate further cuts. I believe the warning signs are real. But, I also believe we have a responsibility and opportunity to lead and act at this moment in time. Our message is straightforward: we must protect what we value and maintain what has worked. For the last two decades, what has worked is a consistent investment in Olympic sports alongside football and basketball programs.” To ensure athletic departments continue funding Olympic sports at their current rates (~40 cents per dollar for FBS institutions), the CSCAA advocates for a two-part framework: “Protect: Establish proportional spending targets by classification to safeguard meaningful investment in Olympic sports. Maintain: Codify the current NCAA sport sponsorship requirements as outlined in NCAA bylaw 20 — 16 sports for FBS, and 14 for FCS and non-football Division I institutions.” Full letter. (link)

Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart weighs in on what he believes to be the biggest issue facing college football: "I think of this meeting, and I think everybody in this room [is asking] eight or nine [conference games], SEC Championship or not, [House] Settlement. The biggest decision that has to be made in college football, right now, by far to me, by far, is when is the portal window and is there one or two. That's not being decided by us today. A lot of people don't even know how it's getting decided, who's deciding it." Smart notes the House [settlement] Implementation Committee – a group of power conference ADs – will make the final decision on the portal. Smart specifically cites concerns over how the winter portal is out of sync with several schools’ academic calendars and opens while some teams are still playing: “It's really hard to be playing in a championship setting and having to deal with that. But when I brought that up as a complaint or a problem, it was told to me, 'There's no crying from the yacht.' So if you're going to play in these environments, you have to be willing to do that. Now, it's we can't do that. … Needless to say, I'm a proponent for a January, wherever it fits, window. There's people saying we can't get our kids in academically. Well, they're getting mid-year high school players in that same window. It's happening everywhere. So, I'm a big believer in that and I think that's the decision that has to be made, at least from a standpoint of SEC and bigger picture. Where is the portal window and is there two or is there one?" Fox was willing to move the upcoming football season’s Week 1 matchup between Texas and Ohio State to primetime, but the idea was nixed by the Longhorns, according to Fox Sports President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill, who tells Front Office Sports’ Ryan Glasspiegel the network anticipated a “minor” viewership loss if the game moved to Sunday night (August 31) because it would be competing with Notre Dame-Miami (FL) on ABC. Fox, however, would’ve been willing to make the move to accommodate a key partner in OSU. Ultimately, UT Texas wouldn't agree to moving the game off of its contracted date of August 30. (link, link)

Cuban: "This is one of the most original grassroots sports movements I've seen in a long time. The GBA has tapped into the passion, rivalry, and brotherhood of college Greek life and turned it into something that has real potential. This isn't just a league; it's a brand with serious upside. I'm excited to help take it to the next stage." With Cuban's backing, the GBA plans to expand its infrastructure, boost its digital media presence, and forge key sponsorships. (link)

Nike is raising its prices in the U.S., effective in June, according to Complex’s Brendan Dunne, who reports price increases will range from $2 to $10. Jordan apparel and accessories, all kids’ footwear and apparel, and all footwear under $100 will not be affected, nor will Nike Air Force 1s. Dunne: “Nike’s decision to raise prices in the U.S. comes in the wake of President Trump’s new tariffs,” but “Complex’s sources said that Nike has not explicitly mentioned Trump nor his policies in rolling out the price changes, instead citing ‘expected inflation’ and ‘economic conditions.’” (link)

Sankey Speaks…
+ The SEC has “not committed to any particular format” on football scheduling, according to Commissioner Greg Sankey, who kicked off the league’s spring meetings yesterday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel notes that decision is likely a function of the College Football Playoff format and that Sankey “stressed that the so-called 4-4-2-2-1-3 model, which distributes one automatic bid to the non-power leagues and three available at-large bids – one potentially for Notre Dame if it falls within the seeding threshold – has not been decided on in his room.” Sankey: "We'll see how that conversation manifests itself this week and we'll look a little bit more deeply at different ideas, which will put me at some point in a better position to answer those questions. … 16 [teams] has had more traction in my league than anticipated a year ago and…over the last six months, 16 became much more central in conversation. As I said, we’re interested, not committed.” Sankey would like to see the regular season continue to be prioritized irrespective of the new CFP format while keeping postseason hopes alive late into the season. "I think the word 'hope' is at the center, too. How do you bring people into the conversation late in the season in a changing environment, and so the idea of, 'Could you have play-in-type games?' continues to populate itself before you're in the CFP selection. That's about building interest and giving hope. Whether that's the ultimate destination, we'll see. … We're trying to find a format to determine, whatever number it is, the best teams in college football, and I think where we are right now is we have used a political process inside a room to come to decisions about football. We should be using football information to come to football decisions." (link, link)
+ According to Thamel, Sankey made clear his “disappointment in the reactions of the ACC and Big 12 commissioners to the move to a straight seeding model announced last week. Both commissioners referenced the macro good of the game in responses, with the ACC's Jim Phillips saying that's a ‘responsibility I take very seriously’ and the Big 12's Brett Yormark saying he hopes what's best for college football is ‘the priority’ in discussions moving forward.” Sankey in his own words: “I don't need lectures from others about 'good of the game.' I don't lecture others about good of the game and coordinating press releases about good of the game. OK, you can issue your press statement, but I'm actually looking for ideas to move us forward." (link)
+ Sankey on the House settlement: "I learned a long time ago we don’t control the court system. So, is there a hope? Is there a thought? Do people say it would be decided at this point? Yes. Do we have a responsibility for implementation, so we’ll pivot what we say this week? Yes. Does it mean we’re gonna keep preparing? We’re gonna keep preparing to see the judge’s final decision.” (link, link)
+ Sankey also remarked the way the CFP selection committee seems to weigh strength of schedule shortchanges the conference slate, which doesn’t include any teams among the lower half of the 134 NCAA FBS programs. “Here’s my problem. But for maybe one, maybe two teams in a year, we don’t have 65 or 66 and everybody else has a group, it’s 60 and below. That has to be considered by us in making our schedule, by the CFP, and by the CFP itself in evaluating selection criteria.” (link)
+ The Athletic’s Ralph Russo notes that Sankey voiced concerns about SEC teams being displaced from the CFP field by lower-ranked teams due to format requirements based on having greater conference representation. “If you actually go back and do the research, that kind of format could cost us positions depending on the number of teams. I don’t see the critics actually digging in to understand that reality. I don’t see the critics actually analyzing like I’ve just described, how schedules are evaluated. So the critics can run to the microphones and share their opinions. We’re trying to find a format to determine, whatever number it is, the best teams in college football.” (link)
+ On3’s Andy Staples proposes that Sankey “intends to weaponize other leagues’ desire for the SEC to play nine conference games instead of eight. This has always been held up as a fairness argument with SEC haters denouncing the league for taking the easy way out. In reality, Sankey has been trying to push his schools toward a nine-game conference schedule for years. The reasons are financial, not altruistic. But Sankey actually does agree with the Michigan and Ohio State and Oklahoma State fans complaining on their message boards about the SEC playing only eight conference games. … And he’s going to offer to trade that. Give the SEC those four automatic bids, and his schools will play nine conference games. And they’ll continue to schedule tough out-of-conference opponents. … In other words, Sankey probably is going to wind up getting what he and his league want because he’s going to ask something like this of his fellow commissioners: Would you rather have the SEC teams playing eight game conference schedules, getting five or six teams into the CFP and not scheduling more hard non-conference games? Or would you rather have the SEC teams playing nine conference games, getting four teams into the CFP and scheduling the tastiest non-conference games?” (link)

Oregon AD Rob Mullens on the future of the Civil War football rivalry with Oregon State: “That game matters to us and our state and to our fans. We’re fortunate that we have that game at Autzen Stadium this year. The two years after that are a little complicated. We’re still continuing to have dialogue with Oregon State. We’d love to make that happen. … We don’t have a solution yet, but I do see that game continuing in the future for sure.” More from Mullens, including this on congressional help for NIL: “It would be great to have some real clarity from a federal standpoint on exactly the laws and rules we’re playing within, because everybody wants to be competitive, and some states are willing to be more competitive than others, all the way down to we’re not going to have income tax on NIL deals. So I do think a federal set of regulations would be helpful.” (link)

Southeastern Louisiana AD/Baseball Committee Chair Jay Artigues discusses the thinking behind several decisions in filling out this year’s championship field. On Creighton being the only Big East team in: “If you look at UConn, the Big East after the top three, it doesn’t have another team in the top 100 (of RPI), and that kind of hurts them, and look, I’m speaking from experience at Southeastern (Louisiana), with the bottom half of that conference, sometimes RPIs bring it down. UConn started out 13-7, then they won 25 of the last 29, but only seven of those games were against top 100 RPI teams. When the committee looked at the last four or five teams, they felt like those teams were ahead of UConn, and UConn was 3-6 against the top teams in that conference. So they really got all those wins against teams with an RPI of 100 and lower. There was a lot of talk about Xavier, and they challenged themselves, and non-conference strength of schedule is very important. But you do have to win those games, some of those games at least. If you look at Xavier, in one trip they played, I think it was Tennessee, LSU, Southeastern Louisiana and Vanderbilt. They went 0-6 and they got outscored nine to 63 or 68, so it was really lopsided, not even competitive in that. So if you (have) the non-conference strength of schedule, which is really important, you do have to win some of them.” (link); Artigues also acknowledges the schedule strength and conference size of the Power 4 leagues are only making it more difficult for those outside the P4 to make the field. “That’s coming from a mid-major guy. You see us [SE Louisiana] on the bubble as well. It makes it very challenging. And it really makes for some serious conversations toward the end.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher fields several questions, including one about whether the Mountain West will merge with the Pac-12, as has been claimed by some MW fans. Canzano replies: “I don’t think MW fans are crazy, necessarily. I think they’re wishing and hoping. But their logic doesn’t hold up. Why would the five departing schools leave the bottom of the MW behind in a desire to form a clear ‘best of the rest’ conference, then scrap the plan and merge? Makes no sense. … The conference lopped off the top half of the Mountain West. It wants to be the clear and undisputed No. 5 conference in the country. Beyond maybe taking UNLV, I don’t see the new-look Pac-12 having an appetite for more MW schools.” Regarding whether the Big 12 will look to add UNLV to enter the Las Vegas market, Canzano is doubtful. For one, he believes the league can accomplish its goal of exposure in the West Coast market by holding “tentpole events” in Las Vegas and other cities. Beyond that, Canzano submits: “I don’t think Las Vegas adds enough media value to the Big 12’s current contract to be a no-brainer addition. The Rebels, in TV market No. 40, would be subsidized by the rest of the Big 12. I wonder if the presidents want another mouth to feed. Big Ten football media day is going to be held in Las Vegas this summer. I won’t be surprised if Tony Petitti uses the platform to talk about bringing his football championship game to Las Vegas. The Big Ten title game is set for Lucas Oil Stadium through 2028.” (link)

Army West Point Deputy AD/Chief Leadership Officer/SWA Tricia Brandenburg and St. Thomas Senior Assoc. AD & SWA/former Minnesota Deputy AD/SWA Julie Manning joined AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown for a discussion about establishing influence and creating impact throughout their careers. Manning and Brandenburg also cover topics including strategic thinking as executive leaders, talent development and building a staff, and advice for aspiring leaders, including being present, trusting the process, and finding ways to say yes. Manning believes it “does become your responsibility as you mature in this industry to try to help identify younger, perhaps less experienced, women in our industry, on our campuses, in our departments. And like everyone, you always sort of have an eye out for talent and it becomes obvious who is very interested in this work, who would do a great job, who’s dedicated, who's passionate, who values the experience of higher education. They start to become obvious and so you want to spend time with them, you want to engage with them. You hope that they're curious and eventually I think you really start to lead them into eventually your chair to fulfill that. So that's at the forefront of my mind now more than ever as I start to look at the latter half of my career.” Brandenburg talks about measuring outcomes of the athletic department’s programming and notes that being in a military environment, “we have access to data in ways that I didn’t have access to. So, trying to leverage the talent that we have in our faculty is something we’re still working on. It is something we’re working on actively in terms of tracking who we recruit and what those outcomes are and trying to figure out if there are things that might be predictive of success in the West Point environment.” More on ADU.
