U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R - Tex.) on reporting by CBS’ Brandon Marcello & John Talty regarding the potential for a Trump administration college sports commission: “This article is nonsense. Cody & Nick are terrific and both good friends. I welcome the commission, hope that it gets formed as soon as possible, and encourage the President to do so.” (link); Texas Tech Board of Regents Chair Cody Campbell responded to Cruz on X: “This is very good news. @1QLeadership Question: How can college athletics departments best support student-athletes transition out of competitive sports, particularly the challenges of athlete identity and life after sports?

Caitlin Broadwell, Athletics Case Manager at Long Beach State, discusses the curriculum used in a class for senior student-athletes on campus. The semester-long class focuses on values, developing community, finding hobbies away from sports, and other foundation building aspects that help athletes feel better prepared for retiring from competition and the inevitable "Athlete Identity Syndrome" that comes with retirement.

Broadwell, on her way to becoming a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, developed the curriculum used in the semester-long class for senior student-athletes. She was a multi-school and multi-sport transfer, finishing her career as a beach volleyball player at LSU. With experience from playing, research, and practical knowledge, Broadwell brings passion and purpose to the mental-health in athletics industry.

After falling to Middlebury in the Women’s Lacrosse title game, Tufts Women’s Lacrosse HC Courtney Shute sounded off about the accessibility and equity of this championship: “Salem does a great job with this championship, so I hope anything I'm going to say doesn't come across as offensive, but this is a hard place to get to and the NCAA needs to do something about the accessibility of the championship. We had an incredible crowd, but our men are playing for a national championship in front of all their alums tonight and that's an issue. I was hoping to say this when we won; I have notes prepared because I think it's a real thing we have to talk about. I promised these girls that if we won a national championship, I was going to fight for equity. I'm going to do it either way. It deserves some attention and again, Salem and Roanoke College do a fantastic job once we're here, but this is a hard place to get to. We had four alums here today. I had hundreds reach out that would have been there in a major city. Our men get to do that and there's an accessibility issue for the Division III lacrosse championships that is inequitable that we need to address.” (link)

The 2026 NCAA Division I, II and III Men's Lacrosse Championships will be held at Virginia’s Carl Smith Center, home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. Division I semis are slated for May 24, with the title game on May 25. The Division II and Division III championship games will both be played May 24. Gillette Stadium was originally the host site, but the facility was named as one of the sites for the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, prompting the venue change. (link)

More from the Division I Decision-Making Working Group presentation of draft concepts for a streamlined sport oversight committee structure and draft decentralized regulatory framework. The current sport committees would “manage the entirety of a sport ecosystem. The committees would be responsible for championship administration, for playing rules, as well as the identified regulatory areas,” including personnel and playing and practice seasons. “Those will be adjusted based on the decisions around what should be national rules. … The initial discussion is that the composition would include guaranteed seats for autonomy conferences that are eligible for an automatic qualification in the sport, the success element that exists today and at-large positions.” In sports where all four Power 4 leagues compete, their seats would be weighed while other seats’ votes would be equal to 1. In sports where all four do not compete, all voting weights would be equal to 1. The working group will meet again next month and expects to deliver a proposal to the DI Board for consideration. + At last week’s State of the College address, Ithaca officials laid out how the institution plans to balance its budget by FY28. For FY26, the institution plans to cut $11M in expenses while growing revenue by $15.3M. Administrators did not provide specific updates on staff cuts but did note annual salary increases for FY26 would be deferred to January 1. As for enrollment, Ithaca met its application goal, with net deposits up 11% year-over-year. (link)
+ The Swarthmore Board of Managers has approved a three-month budget for FY26 “to avoid overcorrecting before we have a clearer picture of the conditions shaping the college’s finances,” per President Valerie Smith, pointing to the potential for a significant endowment tax increase that could cost roughly $20M per year, termination of research grants and the threat on international students’ visas. Smith adds there will be no impact on hiring, but decisions about pay increases will be delayed until fall. The board is set to adopt a full operating budget this fall, likely after the federal budget is finalized by October 1. (link)
