Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark tells ESPN’s Heather Dinich that the league not only approves of a 5+11 College Football Playoff model, it presented it when the Power 4 commissioners met recently in Charlotte. “It has always been our first choice. It’s fair and rewards on field performance. I’m not surprised SEC coaches like it.” (link); Also from the Big 12 spring meetings in Orlando, Kansas Men’s Basketball HC Bill Self said the conference’s basketball coaches are on board with expanding the NCAA Tournament. “There was a little bit that was brought forth, and the consensus among the coaches was – even though it was very little – was [that] we would be in favor of it. “I don’t know the number we’d go to. But I do know that there’s discussions about that.” Jayhawks Women’s Basketball HC Brandon Schneider was less definite when asked about his counterparts throughout the league: “I don’t know that there’s a group vibe. I don’t know how far along we are in that actually happening.” (link); Self, who was joined at the podium by Houston HC Kelvin Sampson, added: “The biggest thing is for me, and I don’t know about [how] Kelvin feels, is let’s get this settlement signed so at least what we know what we’re operating with and we can move forward.” Both coaches were also asked about how NIL has changed their interactions with players, and Self noted: “Kids still want to get better. They still yearn for discipline deep in their core. They come to their respective schools with, still, the thought of it being a springboard to the rest of their lives, putting them on a platform to have the most success and achieve their goals. We would be doing kids a disservice if we didn’t coach them in a manner that we should in order to allow them to come as close as possible (to) achieving their dreams.” Sampson added: “The NIL, the transfer portal, none of that comes into play when I’m teaching defense, rebounding and offense or defining the difference between winning and losing basketball. My conversations still remain the same with our team.” (link, link)

Georgia President Jere Morehead tells ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum he expects there to be more litigation after the House settlement. “I think ultimately if we don’t get a congressional solution, we may never solve this issue. But I’m hopeful that the House settlement will put some parameters around future litigation and give us a better place to litigate whatever issues some plaintiff’s attorney comes up with next. And there are plenty of plaintiffs’ attorneys that will come up with new theories. I’m confident of that.” Regarding the potential for a congressional solution, Morehead says: “I think what we’ve got to do is find a way to get enough Democrats on board with the Republican majority to come up with a bill that we can all live with. … That was always our hope that if we had the House settlement it would be the final step in getting Congress to act.” Morehead also comments on how the industry came to this point and tells Finebaum the “NCAA needed to wake up to the reality of NIL a long time ago. I was on the first NIL Working Group. We came up with a number of great recommendations. The NCAA didn’t adopt any of them. I think we sort of allowed the courts and the plaintiffs’ lawyers to take control and that was a mistake.” (link)

Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart says some schools are promising high school recruits and transferring players third-party NIL deals as part of their compensation package even though none of the deals can be cleared by Deloitte’s NIL Go. “Teams that are unusually good at recruiting right now are doing it. Kids are getting money, but if you decommit, you owe that money back. These are high school kids getting money from an entity not affiliated with the university but is a collective of the university.” Asked to identify the schools, Smart said only that they weren’t in the SEC. NIL Go is expected to begin processing contracts three days after the House settlement is approved, and Smart expects a “mass run” on submissions from schools attempting to test the entity and determine just “how much can I get outside the cap.” He adds: “Every team is going to put pressure on Deloitte to say, ‘I need to know! I’m promising this money outside of the cap.’” While Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts believes in the clearinghouse, he acknowledges schools will begin jockeying in an attempt to exceed the cap with third-party contracts. “Everybody is trying to figure out fair market value NIL. At the end of the day, we’re all looking for a competitive advantage. What is real is you have rev-share amount and scholarship amount, but what is undefined is how much fair market value deals can you get through NIL Go.” Alberts also says of the affiliation agreement being circulated among Power 4 schools: “We are all defendant schools and conferences and you inherently agree to this. I sat in the room with all of our football coaches, ‘Do you want to be governed?’ The answer is yes.” (link)

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier wraps up the 2024-25 season by reporting more than 350K fans took in Huskies’ athletic events. Football saw a 31% increase in attendance compared to last year with a 19% increase in total revenue. Additionally, volleyball season tickets rose by 40%, with over 1,000 tickets sold to the match versus Northwestern, and group ticket sales for both men's and women's basketball saw significant increases, helping grow women's basketball attendance by 20%. Frazier also notes that Victor E. Threads experienced sales of approximately $220K. Finally, compared to this time a year ago, Frazier points out that Huskie Athletic Fund membership is up 61% with a 30% increase in unrestricted dollars. (link)

Stonehill has received a $15M gift – the largest in school history, from Tom and Kathleen Bogan to kickstart a fundraising campaign to support the construction of a new ice hockey and basketball arena. In recognition of their generosity, the facility will be named the Tom & Kathleen Bogan Arena. Skyhawks AD Dean O’Keefe: “The Tom & Kathleen Bogan Arena will help shine a new spotlight on Stonehill for the thousands of visitors who will experience an NCAA Division I contest in person, as well as the millions of viewers who will watch live broadcasts from the venue. This gift will serve our student-athletes and the Stonehill community in many meaningful ways, and we are excited to maximize the opportunities presented by the new athletic facility.” (link)

UCF has received an enhanced estate commitment from Gary and Barbara Bryant, who originally pledged $13M through their estate in 2019 and have recently increased it to $20M. Once funded, the proceeds will establish the Gary W. and Barbara A. Bryant Family Athletic Endowed Scholarship Fund and will perpetually support student-athlete scholarships at UCF. The increase in their deferred commitment complements their active cash pledge of $750K in support of the Hagle Football Gateway project. In recognition of this pledge, the lobby of the forthcoming Taylor A. Gerring Football Center will bear the Bryant family’s name. (link)

UT Arlington set an annual fundraising record for the second consecutive year. While the total was not released, UTA notes the “recently reimagined Maverick Club saw a 102% increase in dollars raised for the annual fund. Additionally, the department received the most gifts over $25K in UTA Athletics' history.” (link)

UC Davis has partnered with the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) to celebrate their bold scientific breakthroughs by introducing a new color and logo. The Aggies will compete in a series of Tahoe-themed games sporting a new alternate uniform starting this fall, and AD Rocko DeLuca says: "Athletics offers a national stage to showcase UC Davis — a top-5 public, R1 research university. We in Athletics strive to match the excellence of our institution's groundbreaking work, including the Aggies' legacy of innovation and global impact at Lake Tahoe. We're excited to give fans a behind-the-scenes look and celebrate that spirit through alternate uniforms and merchandise." (link)

We offer our deepest sympathies to the Baylor community following the passing of football student-athlete Alex Foster. Bears AD Mack Rhoades and Football HC Dave Aranda: “We are heartbroken by the unexpected loss of Alex Foster, a beloved member of our football family. Our deepest condolences are with Alex’s family and all who loved him, as we lift them up in prayer now and in the days to come. In this time of deep sorrow, we draw strength from our faith, the love of the Baylor community, and the unbreakable bond forged through the game we love. Alex’s memory will forever be part of our hearts and this program." (link)

The Indianapolis Star’s Zach Osterman takes a look at Indiana’s Operation Bigfoot, which became code for bringing back the Hoosiers’ Bison mascot. Osterman explains that “while ‘Hoosiers’ embodies a certain cultural resonance for IU fans, it’s hard to assign a physical manifestation to a word with no universally agreed-upon meaning. Decades ago, for just a few years, drawing on the animal figuring prominently on the state seal, IU tried a bison mascot. It was introduced in 1965 and abandoned by the end of that decade.” However, “Bring back the bison” became a “rallying cry stretching from podcasts like the popular CrimsonCast, to independent retail, including popular Indianapolis-based company Homefield Apparel. Athletics officials felt that groundswell, which came to a head in December when IU Student Government passed a bill reinstating the bison as the university’s official mascot. From that point forward, the department was in.” While Hoosiers (Bison?) AD Scott Dolson “firmly supported the idea,” Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Jeremy Gray tells Osterman the “students really pushing it was a big determining factor.” IU began subtly implanting bison imagery across its branding, with small logos in the corners of video scoreboard graphics and horns crashing through schedule posters for the 2025-26 athletic year. Beginning in 2024, winners of the men’s and women’s Little 500 bicycle races received plush stuffed bison on the winners’ podium, and Gray notes: “We decided to lean into it.” The effort culminated in a series of three videos over the past two weeks hinting at, and ultimately revealing, the Bison’s return. Arkansas State is preparing to meet with AD candidates as part of a final round of in-person talks, according to CollegeAD, which reports: “Sources tell us that a small group, which included sitting ADs as well as Power 4 senior staffers, interviewed virtually over the last week. That cohort has now been narrowed down, with a final set of candidates expected to meet with A-State officials in Little Rock this week.” (link)

The NCAA’s partnership extension with Genius Sports, which was announced earlier this year, comes with a caveat, according to NCAA President Charlie Baker: “For them to continue to access our data moving forward, there can’t be any sportsbook betting on negative props. So all the stuff that literally translates into a lot of the worst behavior that’s directed at young people and student-athletes generally under this agreement is going to be off the table.” Baker also notes the NCAA’s work continues in fighting college prop bets: “At this point, slightly more than half the states that have legalized sports betting do not permit prop betting on college sports, but that still leaves enormous numbers of student-athletes subject to the kind of abuse that comes with this stuff. And I think it will remain, for all intents and purposes, a significant challenge going forward.” Baker’s comments came at last week’s Knight Commission meetings. (link)

SEC at Sandestin…
+ Florida AD Scott Stricklin indicated to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger that football is different from the other sports because it has less data and fewer games, and therefore there is less for a selection committee to consider. Stricklin: "A committee is not ideal to choose a postseason. … I question whether it is appropriate for college football." Stricklin, who served on the committee from 2018-21, added, per The Athletic’s Ralph Russo: “So I think anything we can do to make the postseason more objective and less subjective is going to be better. Whether you could do that some other way than automatics? I don't know, but I think that's the goal." (link, link)
+ SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey explained the league could make an effort to preserve certain games if it sticks with an eight-game football schedule. “We’re attentive to real key rivalries and have models that can accommodate them that have been shared and will continue to be shared. … We have a variety of alternatives, an alternative we presented is to protect those in an eight-game schedule moving forward. The conversation about annual games that need to be played has been a focus since August of ’21, when he had our first gathering of athletic directors and talked about what the schedule might look like.” (link)
+ Per On3’s Andy Staples, Sankey “said the SEC's football coaches would prefer a 10-day transfer portal window in January. They'd also rather keep things as they are instead of an April-only portal.” (link)
+ Football coaches took a “heightened interest in a 16-team [College Football Playoff] model that would include the five highest-ranked conference champions and 11 at-large bids,” according to ESPN’s Heather Dinich and Pete Thamel. Commissioner Greg Sankey explained the coaches “talked about – I'll call it a 5+11 model – and our own ability to earn those berths. ... At the coaching level, the question is, ‘why wouldn't that be fine? Why wouldn't we do that?’ We talked about 16 with them. So, good conversation, not a destination, but the first time I've had the ability to go really in depth with ideas with them.” Meanwhile, Dinich and Thamel note there is a “disconnect between the league's athletic directors and coaches, which appeared Tuesday in public comments. Florida AD Scott Stricklin and Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts were both adamant about wanting automatic qualifiers, which would go along with the league adopting a nine-game league schedule. But coaches such as Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin said they'd prefer a model with the 16 best teams. Georgia's Kirby Smart said he wanted a model that would include the most SEC teams possible, pointing to the SEC's other sports and their ability to flood the postseason because of strength of schedule.” (link)

Texas A&M will fully fund every roster position, increasing its total scholarship allotment by more than 150, according to Aggies AD Trev Alberts. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger notes the Aggies join Tennessee, Clemson and “some others in completely scholarshipping each sport.” Meanwhile, WRAL’s Brian Murphy notes North Carolina “had 850 athletes this year, which will shrink to 735 under the House roster limits. But UNC had only 320 full scholarships so it'd have to increase that by more than 400. ‘I don't think we'll get there. We certainly won't get there quickly,’ AD Bubba Cunningham said.” (link)

There’s still a lot of “pissin’ and moanin’” going on during the SEC spring meetings, according to LSU AD Scott Woodward, who tells ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum: “We’re still collecting information and talking about things – everything from what the CFP is going to do and how the commissioner is going to handle that and go forward, which bleeds into do we stay at eight games or go to nine games? And there's been no decisions made, just more data collection and more ruminating over it.” Woodward also notes that while what goes on at smaller schools isn’t his direct concern, he notes: “You have to worry about the greater good in order to maintain your health at the top because of all of what football and what collegiate athletics means to the whole place. … I’m a big advocate of what collegiate sports has done in the past century.” Woodward also notes of the overall state of the industry: “It’s concerning, and you could write a dissertation about what’s wrong and what’s good because there’s going to be a serious gap between haves and have-nots and is that good for the overall sport? I’m not smart enough to tell you that I know. … I do have grave concerns about where this is going and what’s going to happen even within our conference and even within the Power 4. Where and how does this thing ‘evolutionize’ and what do we turn into?” (link)

According to CBS’ Brandon Marcello, the last two years “have been the most hectic on the [football] coaching carousel with a total of 61 programs changing head coaches, including 30 during the most recent 2024-25 cycle. That represents an incredible 44.9% of FBS teams changing leadership in less than two calendar years. With those changes at the top come a flood of moves among assistant coaches, too, and unsurprisingly, that number hit 550 total changes this offseason.” Marcello adds that “in a four-year span, a staggering 2,163 on-field coaches have changed jobs.” AFCA Executive Director Craig Bohl: "Coaches, by and large, can adapt to a lot of situations but what is challenging is the changing landscape, between roster management and the pending House case being finalized, and the number of players with the ability to transfer. … Right now, it just seems like the goalpost keeps moving every week. That's troubling for coaches. They're unbelievably resourceful, they care about the players, they care about the game. We're just looking for some stability and clarity, and right now we're challenged with that." Meanwhile, Marcello notes that “53 assistants from the Group of 6 schools, including Oregon State and Washington State, were elevated to jobs in the four power conferences. That's a year-to-year decline of 31.2%. More, including coaching moves by conference, coaching moves among levels and hires/promotions by conference. (link)

James Moore & Co.’s Jim Booz reflects on the recent Navigating Our New Normal Symposium at Saint Joseph’s. The event was designed to address the unique challenges and opportunities faced by programs outside the Power 4 conferences, and Booz notes: “One of my key takeaways from the panel was the shared sense of urgency. While larger programs may have deeper financial reserves and external revenue streams to help absorb these changes, mid-majors must be more strategic and creative. We talked extensively about partnerships, philanthropy and the critical importance of aligning athletic and institutional goals. Since the symposium, I’ve had several follow-up conversations with attendees. There is a genuine appetite for collaboration, best-practice sharing and advocacy on behalf of the mid-major community. It’s clear this topic won’t be solved overnight. However, what gives me hope is the willingness of leaders across institutions to engage thoughtfully and proactively.” (link)

Nevada WR Cortez Braham is the latest student-athlete to file a lawsuit against the NCAA over junior college counting against his eligibility. Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich: “Braham claims that, but for the JUCO rule, his three years at Hutchison CC would not count and that he would be eligible to earn ‘nearly $500K’ in NIL compensation. One interesting thing about this case is that Braham focuses heavily on Nevada's refusal to apply for a waiver on his behalf. Notable, given some judges' criticism of the NCAA's waiver system (see Fourqurean) and the need for athletes to get schools to apply on their behalf.” (link); Full complaint. (link)

Texas Football HC Steve Sarkisian comments on a story published last month indicating the Longhorns’ payroll would be between $35-40M for the upcoming season: “It was a little bit of irresponsible reporting. It was one anonymous source said that’s what our roster was. I wish I had $40M on our roster, we’d probably be a better team than we are. The idea to think that a lot of other schools aren’t spending money to get players. I mean, it’s the state of college football right now. It is what it is. Hey, we’re fortunate, don’t get me wrong. We’ve got great support… I wish I had another $15M or so, though. I might have a little better roster.” (link)
