Maryville AD Andrew Wu sits down with D3.ticker’s Anthony Grassi at the 2025 NCAA Convention to dive into joining the Scots as Interim AD, how he handled that transition and the one to become the permanent AD. On moving from the AD at Goucher to the interim role with MC, Wu’s relationship with President Bryan Coker, having served as his supervisor at Goucher, was integral in that decision, adding: “I had been AD at Goucher for five years and I had always kind of viewed my tenure at Goucher as either I'm going to be here 40 years, or I'm going to be here for five to seven, probably not really much of an in-between. […] As those conversations happened, it turned into a really good opportunity for me and for Maryville to test out the waters and for me to be able to make a decision if this was something I wanted to do permanently and for the college to get a feel for me and figure out if this is the person they want leading the department, and that was actually really appealing to me.” Given his relationship with President Coker, Wu emphasized the importance of the genuine messaging around the nature of his arrival: “This was a very genuine interim role. I didn't know if I was going to put my hat in the ring, and obviously the college didn't know what they were going to see or get out of me.” The biggest surprise for Wu was the college’s strong support for athletics, with one major challenge being the upcoming move to the SAA. “When I first started, there was a little bit of trepidation. We're one of the stronger institutions in our current conference, as far as competitive outcomes, and we're going to a tougher one. So natural for coaches to say, I feel pretty good about making the postseason, winning championships, and making the national tournament here. In the SAA, it's going to be a little bit tougher, so why is this a good thing? […] So that was number one for me. Am I going to be set up to succeed? I don't want to come in three or four years of really positive progress, take us into a new conference and suddenly we're no longer winning championships. We're no longer getting an NCAA berth. So feeling good about that was number one.” More on BOSCA. (link)

The NCAA’s partnership extension with Genius Sports, which was announced earlier this year, comes with a caveat, according to NCAA President Charlie Baker: “For them to continue to access our data moving forward, there can’t be any sportsbook betting on negative props. So all the stuff that literally translates into a lot of the worst behavior that’s directed at young people and student-athletes generally under this agreement is going to be off the table.” Baker also notes the NCAA’s work continues in fighting college prop bets: “At this point, slightly more than half the states that have legalized sports betting do not permit prop betting on college sports, but that still leaves enormous numbers of student-athletes subject to the kind of abuse that comes with this stuff. And I think it will remain, for all intents and purposes, a significant challenge going forward.” Baker’s comments came at last week’s Knight Commission meetings. (link)

The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released an open letter to its membership reaffirming that it is “leading from the front” as NCAA athletics reorients itself in the wake of a pending House settlement decision. From the missive, which is signed by Executive Director Samantha Barany: “We are witnessing the gradual dismantling of one of college athletics’ greatest strengths: opportunity. Since the announcement of the proposed House settlement – and before it has even been approved – 36 Olympic sport programs have already been cut, eliminating 1,017 opportunities for student-athletes. [...] This is not the end. I’ve spoken directly with athletic administrators who anticipate further cuts. I believe the warning signs are real. But, I also believe we have a responsibility and opportunity to lead and act at this moment in time. Our message is straightforward: we must protect what we value and maintain what has worked. For the last two decades, what has worked is a consistent investment in Olympic sports alongside football and basketball programs.” To ensure athletic departments continue funding Olympic sports at their current rates (~40 cents per dollar for FBS institutions), the CSCAA advocates for a two-part framework: “Protect: Establish proportional spending targets by classification to safeguard meaningful investment in Olympic sports. Maintain: Codify the current NCAA sport sponsorship requirements as outlined in NCAA bylaw 20 — 16 sports for FBS, and 14 for FCS and non-football Division I institutions.” Full letter. (link)
