UT Tyler Softball goes back-to-back, becoming the first team to accomplish that feat since California (PA) in 1997-98. Also of note: “They are also the first team to not allow a run in the championship series since the Division II championship moved to its current format in 2016.” (link)

New New Mexico Highlands AD Scott Noble chats with the Santa Fe New Mexican’s Will Webber about the opportunity in Las Vegas telling Webber: “I know exactly what I’m getting into. We’ve been fighting that same battle [at WNMU].” A primary goal for Noble will be lobbying for funds to keep the Cowboys and Cowgirls competitive in the RMAC. “With Santa Fe right there, that’s absolutely something we’ll aim to do. […] You have to do a good job working on the people who make those decisions. It’s about getting them on campus to see what we’re dealing with and showing them what we need help with.” Noble also plans to tap into NMHU’s extensive alumni network, noting: “They’ve always had a strong, deep group of alumni who support them, so that will be a priority. What I see is a great opportunity, to come in there and work with a good staff and an administration with a clear vision for athletics.” (link)

BOSCA Founder Jim Abbott pens on the future of small college athletics, writing in part: “Small college athletic leaders should be contemplating this scenario now. What would happen if the funding from the NCAA stopped or was dramatically reduced when the NCAA’s current television agreement expires in 2032? For Division 2 and 3 schools, this would likely require an increase in the amount of conference dues paid (or a decrease in services provided for the conference) and additional budget dollars available for post-season travel. In short, the cost of doing business would increase significantly for schools that are already facing enrollment drops and budget cuts. For the most successful schools, post-season travel alone could become a $500,000 or more annual expense. […] Whether there is a precipitous drop in the NCAA funding model or not, there is no denying that significant changes are on the horizon for small college athletics. The question is should you wait until your circumstances force you to address this or should you be planning for this eventuality now? […] When I contemplate the future of small college higher education, I believe more resolutely than ever that athletics will continue to be an important part of campus. That having been said, it must be reimagined in a way that allows the institutions to sustainably support it. Most likely this will mean a reorganization of schools to create more geographically centered conferences with like-minded and funded missions.” Abbott pinpoints two immediate impediments to this solution: conference buyouts that can range from $25K to $250K that limit the flexibility of schools and ego. “Ego is the biggest challenge in making a decision like this. It’s rare to see schools like Azusa Pacific (or Hartford and St. Francis) make a decision that is perceived as moving down. That having been said, do your alumni really differentiate a victory over Occidental College as opposed to Biola University? The answer is unequivocally no. […] The reality is that for many schools the environment that led them to transition years ago has now changed (or the makeup of the league they moved to has changed) and as a result, what seemed like a logical decision at the time isn’t so obvious anymore.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker would like a decision sooner rather than later about expanding March Madness and noted during the Big 12’s meetings in Orlando that “our goal here is to try to sort of either get to yes or no sometime in the next few months. There’s a lot of logistical work that would be associated with doing this if we were to go down this road.” If a decision to expand is reached, Baker believes it would take effect next year. “That would be the goal, which is why the window to negotiate it will probably end sometime in early summer.” Baker says of the benefits of expansion: “It’s a way to get some of the teams into the tournament who would be at large teams. Given the fact that we believe in the AQ process and the opportunities that it creates for everybody to have a stake in the tournaments on the men’s and women’s side, we leave some teams out that probably belong there, and it’s a way to get them in.” Baker also said he hasn’t heard much about the presidential commission on college sports, adding: “We’ve done a bunch of things that were important to Washington with respect to some of their issues with us. And I think we’ve seen enough, especially in the sort of burgeoning state law space, to be able to make a pretty compelling case about state preemption and some of the other issues we’re dealing with. From my point of view, as many voices at the table works for me. I think these issues are important, and they certainly matter a lot to schools and to kids and to college sports.” (link, link)

The PSAC rolls out its new five-year strategic plan, with the mission to be “a model Division II athletics conference whose members are committed to providing student-athletes an optimal and balanced experience in competition, in the classroom, in the community, and in life.” Commissioner Steve Murray: “This new plan provides us a roadmap for the next five years as we navigate the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics. Most importantly, the process of planning helped us reaffirm the commitment to our primary mission of education and support for our student-athletes. I want to thank everyone who participated in any of the steps in the process of the plan's development. It was a very inclusive process and all voices were heard as we moved toward a finallized plan.” (link, link - Full plan)

Missouri Western will discontinue Men’s and Women’s Track & Field effective immediately. AD Andy Carter: “This decision is in no way a reflection of their performance or commitment. It is a necessary step to address broader challenges, prepare for an ever-changing landscape in intercollegiate athletics and to ensure a sustainable future. I am a competitor. The thought of giving up or quitting our pursuit of a new track facility is not in my nature. However, I am a realist and we have just not been able to provide the necessary facilities to support these student-athletes. It was not the outcome any of us desired, but it is the responsible thing to do.” MWSU also notes the “decision will allow a much more robust investment in the MWSU cross country programs.” (link)
