Michigan State President Kevin Guskiewicz says the Spartans are “getting close” on naming a new AD and says of the traits he’s been looking for throughout the search: “It's a much more externally facing job today than it's ever been, and it's about the connectedness to the donor base, the alums, the folks who can help us with sponsorships and to generate revenue." The job description, he adds, calls for “somebody who can run a major corporation. It's a very different world today.” Guskiewicz also says sitting ADs at other universities are "very nervous" about participating in a search, given the impact it could have on their current coaches and donor base. Former Arizona State men’s swimmer and named plaintiff in the House case, Grant House, tells HoopsHQ’s Seth Davis that lawyers informed him he had a week to prepare his family and ASU staff for what was coming before they filed. When the news came out early, House explains: “It kind of all came crashing down. I thought I had a lot more time to tell people and inform people, because that’s what the lawyers had said. At that point, I didn’t understand the magnitude of what it was.” Davis points out that House has made “exactly one appearance as a spectator in Judge Wilken’s courtroom and has barely met his own lead attorneys. House subsequently notes: “A lot of people think I’m the mastermind behind it, but my actual involvement in the inner workings of the case has been pretty minimal and quite infinitesimal. To be here and know that I’ve had really no voice in this settlement has been unfortunate, upsetting and disappointing.” House understands that he could take his name off the case and be rid of all the negative attention and hassle, but he tells Davis he reached that point. “That’s the easy choice to make. I felt like, if I back down from this opportunity and I quit on this, then who’s going to stand up for athletes and who’s going to have the courage to go forward? Because it’s not about me. … I don’t know what’s going to come at the end of this. Even five years into this, I still don’t know how each day is going to unfold. But I believe I’m on the right side of history.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey joined The Paul Finebaum Show and noted there was a report earlier in the week that “I had the authority to depart the NCAA. In Monday's press conference my observation was: in our room there are those who asked if the NCAA still works for us? Why are we still in the NCAA? So we talked about a decision-making working group; Chancellor [Glenn] Boyce from Ole Miss and myself were on that. What is our position? We felt, and I think we still feel, that an autonomy division within the NCAA is the best direction. So that's a decision we've made before. How do we position it as this conversation takes place?” Sankey says there won’t be a decision on football scheduling during this week’s meetings and explains: “Part of my concern right now is all the time we’ve wasted in the CFP not making decisions has created a time crunch for us. And we may not have the needed CFP clarity…in sufficient time to make a decision about eight or nine games, which tends towards people thinking about eight. I tend to think we should play nine and we’ll be fine.” Sankey on his working relationship with Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti: “I accept that both conferences are going to have different views on things. I think Tony understands that as well. I think we've communicated openly and honestly and there've been points of agreement, points of disagreement, ideas generated that haven’t been thought of in one place that are thought someplace else and you’re pulled along.” Sankey also notes the Power 4 commissioners have met twice in May alone to discuss the current issues. “So it’s not really exclusionary. It was a recognition that we’re not making any progress through these other means so let’s see if we can come together. I just told our presidents we need to figure out how to reinvigorate the conversation because we've had so much change at the presidential level.” More. (link)

Sankey’s comments about working with the Big Ten come amid reports that Big Ten ADs discussed the 5+11 College Football Playoff model and, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, “many ADs say they would not support such a model if the SEC remains at eight conference games.” As such, Sankey suggests the timeframe by which the SEC must decide on moving to nine conference games for 2026 will arrive sooner than the deadline to decide a future CFP format. "I’m not sure we can work through our (CFP) obligations," by that deadline. Dellenger adds that the deadline to decide on the 2026 SEC football schedule – nine games or eight – is, at the latest, by the start of this coming football season and there is a “real chance that the CFP format negotiations extends into the fall.” (link); On the topic of potentially playing games internationally, Sankey explains: "The economics of our stadiums are just very different from our colleague conferences that have been a part of that. You know, the displacement of a home game in our communities and stadiums, it might be 85K to 100K+, and relocating that, the logistical costs and timing, that's a challenge. But the loss of that home gate, that's really a challenge. We've had some conversations around maybe non-conference games, that might be an away game, but it's never worked. I think I've said this before, the strength of this conference is in our communities, in our states, in the region, and we magnify that on a national and even international level. I don't think that requires us playing internationally." (link)

Several SEC ADs stopped by The Paul Finebaum Show set in Destin as they emerged from the league’s spring meetings, including Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek, who noted the House settlement would create two student-athlete compensation “lanes” – revenue-sharing and “legitimate NIL. And if we can stay within those two lanes in college athletics, I think we have figured this out. But if someone decides to venture and create a third lane, that’s where the problems will occur.” Yurachek also tells Finebaum he was told by Commissioner Greg Sankey that he was told enforcement of the new model will include “someone that has ties professional league that is well-versed in working in arbitration, well-versed in enforcement, well-versed in salary cap management, and I think that's what we need from an enforcement entity because this is a new day and age in college athletics and not one the NCAA is equipped to handle.” (link)
|
Texas AD Chris Del Conte favors “an expanded number [of College Football Playoff teams] for more opportunity” but declined to say if he wants a model with four automatic bids for SEC teams. He added that he wants to retain the original plan of playing some playoff games on home campuses: “I’m all in on that action. … The wear and tear on your fans, and the price of tickets and airlines at that time of year, it's really an expense. In the NFL, the higher-ranked team gets the home advantage. Having a home game and playing Clemson at home was unbelievable. Yet we're still married to that old bowl system for a moment. So you've got to give a little bit of grace as we go through this. But having a home game was great." Del Conte on playing high-profile non-conference football games: “Our fans want to see great games, and we should provide unbelievable, compelling games. I’m a firm believer for us to play Ohio State, Michigan, USC, LSU. We just signed Notre Dame (for a home-and-away series in 2028 and 2029). Those games are important to college. If you have a responsibility to try to create compelling matchups during the regular season, you should at our brand of the University of Texas. We won’t change that philosophy.” (link, link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks tells Paul Finebaum he and Football HC Kirby Smart have discussions about balancing what’s best for Georgia with what’s best for the game. “He talks about how we want to leave the game better than we found it. Of course, Of course we're going to push for what's great for Georgia and what's great for the SEC, but we also keep in mind what’s great for the game…because we have respect for the game because we all worked at different places and we’re thankful for what this game has done for us.” Brooks also points out that Georgia has experienced being left out of the College Football Playoff when they had a strong case to be in, but “we respected the process. … People can play out models and say what if you’re the 13th team, we’ve lived through that. We’ve been good stewards and respected the process. No matter what you do, whether you're talking about football or baseball or whatever, there’s always going to be a team that’s going to be frustrated with the process.” In Georgia’s case, when it comes to possibly adding a ninth league football game, Brooks notes the Bulldogs already have an annual rivalry with Georgia Tech and have scheduled home-and-homes with programs like Notre Dame and Clemson. “We’d have to take a hard look at that and see how it’s going to be valued as we make our schedule over the next 10 years.” (link)
|
Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart wants to make sure the SEC maintains perspective as it makes decisions for the future, telling Paul Finebaum: “It’s so easy to look at decisions in silos or one-offs. I think that one of the things that will be important – at least from our lens at Kentucky and I hope our lens as a conference – is we look at these things in the total.” Barnhart adds: “Is the decision-making around the CFP? Is the decision-making around football scheduling? Those things are all very interrelated, in my mind. For us at Kentucky, they’re very interrelated. I want to make sure that we know what’s most important. Our finances are part of that conversation. Our fan base is a part of that conversation. Keeping hope alive for our programs is really, really important. Opportunity is important for our kids. I think those things are all inner-related. I think as a group of leaders, we’ve gotta make sure that we’re thinking about them together. … “If you think them in pieces, I think that’s when you begin to maybe make some bad decisions. So I’m hopeful that we look at them in the aggregate.” (link)

LSU AD Scott Woodward says the Tigers are working with Oak View Group on a potential $400M multipurpose arena on campus and that ASM Global is no longer being considered. A timeline for the project has yet to be determined, as Woodward explains the earliest it would possibly be completed is in 2029. The new arena would be owned by the developer who constructs it, with LSU retaining usage rights for basketball, gymnastics and other sporting events. When not in use for LSU events, the arena would host live events and concerts. (link)

CBS’ Shehan Jeyarajah submits that “four years into the NIL era, offensive lines are less consistent. There's little argument. The days of Alabama or Georgia hoarding the very best players in America and deploying generational lines is simply over. However, while the top groups are leaking talent, the rest are taking advantage.” Since 2021, yards-per-carry in Power 4 v. Power 4 matchups has decreased from 4.28 to 4.11, and while part of that is likely attributable to schematic changes that put more emphasis on passing, Jeyarajah notes the transfer portal also comes into play. “Continuity along the offensive line is paramount as five players aim to act as one. The results speak for themselves. Out of 40 players to earn All-America honors from CBS Sports in each of the four post-NIL seasons, 36 were homegrown players. Out of 50 players to start on a Joe Moore Award semifinalist in 2024, 39 of them were homegrown. Two of the three finalists, Army and Texas, were completely built through high school recruiting.” Pro Football Focus Head of Analysis Billy Moy adds: "Consistency across the offensive line in general is huge because one bad play from the offensive line can blow up an entire drive. As soon as you start to remove parts of that consistency, the floor isn't necessarily going down a little. You're going way down because of the ramifications it can have, especially in the college season where every single win matters.” Furthermore, Miami (FL) OL coach Alex Mirabal explains: "Offensive line is the most developmental of all positions. You know why? Blocking is not natural. It's something that you have to teach from the ground up, and it takes time. You're teaching them to do something that's unnatural. These bodies are so big, it takes time to gain the core strength they need being a 345-pound man. It just takes time." More. (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark tells ESPN’s Heather Dinich that the league not only approves of a 5+11 College Football Playoff model, it presented it when the Power 4 commissioners met recently in Charlotte. “It has always been our first choice. It’s fair and rewards on field performance. I’m not surprised SEC coaches like it.” (link); Also from the Big 12 spring meetings in Orlando, Kansas Men’s Basketball HC Bill Self said the conference’s basketball coaches are on board with expanding the NCAA Tournament. “There was a little bit that was brought forth, and the consensus among the coaches was – even though it was very little – was [that] we would be in favor of it. “I don’t know the number we’d go to. But I do know that there’s discussions about that.” Jayhawks Women’s Basketball HC Brandon Schneider was less definite when asked about his counterparts throughout the league: “I don’t know that there’s a group vibe. I don’t know how far along we are in that actually happening.” (link); Self, who was joined at the podium by Houston HC Kelvin Sampson, added: “The biggest thing is for me, and I don’t know about [how] Kelvin feels, is let’s get this settlement signed so at least what we know what we’re operating with and we can move forward.” Both coaches were also asked about how NIL has changed their interactions with players, and Self noted: “Kids still want to get better. They still yearn for discipline deep in their core. They come to their respective schools with, still, the thought of it being a springboard to the rest of their lives, putting them on a platform to have the most success and achieve their goals. We would be doing kids a disservice if we didn’t coach them in a manner that we should in order to allow them to come as close as possible (to) achieving their dreams.” Sampson added: “The NIL, the transfer portal, none of that comes into play when I’m teaching defense, rebounding and offense or defining the difference between winning and losing basketball. My conversations still remain the same with our team.” (link, link)

Georgia President Jere Morehead tells ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum he expects there to be more litigation after the House settlement. “I think ultimately if we don’t get a congressional solution, we may never solve this issue. But I’m hopeful that the House settlement will put some parameters around future litigation and give us a better place to litigate whatever issues some plaintiff’s attorney comes up with next. And there are plenty of plaintiffs’ attorneys that will come up with new theories. I’m confident of that.” Regarding the potential for a congressional solution, Morehead says: “I think what we’ve got to do is find a way to get enough Democrats on board with the Republican majority to come up with a bill that we can all live with. … That was always our hope that if we had the House settlement it would be the final step in getting Congress to act.” Morehead also comments on how the industry came to this point and tells Finebaum the “NCAA needed to wake up to the reality of NIL a long time ago. I was on the first NIL Working Group. We came up with a number of great recommendations. The NCAA didn’t adopt any of them. I think we sort of allowed the courts and the plaintiffs’ lawyers to take control and that was a mistake.” (link)

Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart says some schools are promising high school recruits and transferring players third-party NIL deals as part of their compensation package even though none of the deals can be cleared by Deloitte’s NIL Go. “Teams that are unusually good at recruiting right now are doing it. Kids are getting money, but if you decommit, you owe that money back. These are high school kids getting money from an entity not affiliated with the university but is a collective of the university.” Asked to identify the schools, Smart said only that they weren’t in the SEC. NIL Go is expected to begin processing contracts three days after the House settlement is approved, and Smart expects a “mass run” on submissions from schools attempting to test the entity and determine just “how much can I get outside the cap.” He adds: “Every team is going to put pressure on Deloitte to say, ‘I need to know! I’m promising this money outside of the cap.’” While Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts believes in the clearinghouse, he acknowledges schools will begin jockeying in an attempt to exceed the cap with third-party contracts. “Everybody is trying to figure out fair market value NIL. At the end of the day, we’re all looking for a competitive advantage. What is real is you have rev-share amount and scholarship amount, but what is undefined is how much fair market value deals can you get through NIL Go.” Alberts also says of the affiliation agreement being circulated among Power 4 schools: “We are all defendant schools and conferences and you inherently agree to this. I sat in the room with all of our football coaches, ‘Do you want to be governed?’ The answer is yes.” (link)

Football saw a 31% increase in attendance compared to last year with a 19% increase in total revenue. Additionally, volleyball season tickets rose by 40%, with over 1,000 tickets sold to the match versus Northwestern, and group ticket sales for both men's and women's basketball saw significant increases, helping grow women's basketball attendance by 20%. Frazier also notes that Victor E. Threads experienced sales of approximately $220K. Finally, compared to this time a year ago, Frazier points out that Huskie Athletic Fund membership is up 61% with a 30% increase in unrestricted dollars. (link)

Skyhawks AD Dean O’Keefe: “The Tom & Kathleen Bogan Arena will help shine a new spotlight on Stonehill for the thousands of visitors who will experience an NCAA Division I contest in person, as well as the millions of viewers who will watch live broadcasts from the venue. The Indianapolis Star’s Zach Osterman takes a look at Indiana’s Operation Bigfoot, which became code for bringing back the Hoosiers’ Bison mascot. Osterman explains that “while ‘Hoosiers’ embodies a certain cultural resonance for IU fans, it’s hard to assign a physical manifestation to a word with no universally agreed-upon meaning. Decades ago, for just a few years, drawing on the animal figuring prominently on the state seal, IU tried a bison mascot. It was introduced in 1965 and abandoned by the end of that decade.” However, “Bring back the bison” became a “rallying cry stretching from podcasts like the popular CrimsonCast, to independent retail, including popular Indianapolis-based company Homefield Apparel. Athletics officials felt that groundswell, which came to a head in December when IU Student Government passed a bill reinstating the bison as the university’s official mascot. From that point forward, the department was in.” While Hoosiers (Bison?) AD Scott Dolson “firmly supported the idea,” Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Jeremy Gray tells Osterman the “students really pushing it was a big determining factor.” IU began subtly implanting bison imagery across its branding, with small logos in the corners of video scoreboard graphics and horns crashing through schedule posters for the 2025-26 athletic year. Beginning in 2024, winners of the men’s and women’s Little 500 bicycle races received plush stuffed bison on the winners’ podium, and Gray notes: “We decided to lean into it.” The effort culminated in a series of three videos over the past two weeks hinting at, and ultimately revealing, the Bison’s return.
