NCAA President Charlie Baker would like a decision sooner rather than later about expanding March Madness and noted during the Big 12’s meetings in Orlando that “our goal here is to try to sort of either get to yes or no sometime in the next few months. There’s a lot of logistical work that would be associated with doing this if we were to go down this road.” If a decision to expand is reached, Baker believes it would take effect next year. “That would be the goal, which is why the window to negotiate it will probably end sometime in early summer.” Baker says of the benefits of expansion: “It’s a way to get some of the teams into the tournament who would be at large teams. Given the fact that we believe in the AQ process and the opportunities that it creates for everybody to have a stake in the tournaments on the men’s and women’s side, we leave some teams out that probably belong there, and it’s a way to get them in.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker also appeared unconcerned by speculation about the SEC potentially leaving the association, remarking during the Big 12’s spring meetings that “I tend to believe what I hear from people when I speak to them directly. … Their voice matters a great deal in part because they take college sports seriously and play at a very high level, just like the Big 12 does and just like many others do. … But I think there’s a path forward here where we can figure out a way to keep everybody in a place where they’re comfortable that they’re both being heard and having the opportunity to play and compete.” Baker also said he hasn’t heard much about the presidential commission on college sports, adding: “We’ve done a bunch of things that were important to Washington with respect to some of their issues with us. And I think we’ve seen enough, especially in the sort of burgeoning state law space, to be able to make a pretty compelling case about state preemption and some of the other issues we’re dealing with. From my point of view, as many voices at the table works for me. I think these issues are important, and they certainly matter a lot to schools and to kids and to college sports.” (link)

The Detroit News’ Tony Paul joins D1.ticker’s Kristen Eargle to talk about Michigan State’s AD search and how MSU’s profile factors in. Paul notes there’s a “lot to like about Michigan State. They have a big seat at the table in the Big Ten, so there's Big Ten revenues at Michigan State. You’re talking $200M coming in. So, they're in a good position there but they're still kind of lagging behind the Ohio States and the Michigans of the world. … The question that they need to ask moving forward is what they want to do with that position. Do they want to make it a school that tries to be good in every sport, in all the non-revenue sports like Michigan has been able to do? Michigan wins Big Ten titles in every sport, including football. Or do they want to go back to the days of Mark Hollis when he was the athletic director…when they focus on football and basketball and they’re very good at both and it really boosted the school’s profile.” Paul also notes MSU is fortunate to have a “couple billionaires at their disposal for fundraising. … So, they’ve got these guys they can go to anytime they want to get money. But it’s the rest of the network, it’s the smaller donors, it’s the untapped donors that maybe they haven’t got in with or even considered. And I think when you boost yourself nationally it opens the eyes to those other donors that might not be on your radar.” Full conversation. (link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks notes the cost-trimming component of preparing for revenue-sharing means people like Bulldogs Deputy AD for Finance Stephanie Ransom and her team are “not the most popular people in the athletic department right now. … I can walk into those meetings and play good cop, bad cop depending on what mood I’m in that day and help them out. It’s been a lot of work to really refine the budget.” Brooks explains the strategy is based on impacting the student-athlete experience as little as possible and notes he’s asked every program to rank priorities to find out where they could be more efficient. The Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer notes the belts being tightened aren’t limited to Athens. For example, Auburn Executive Deputy AD Jared Benko says: “Every school I’ve talked to has tightened the belt and cut expenses and tried to continue to be good stewards of those dollars. From a revenue standpoint, you’re always looking to grow in revenue.” (link)

Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger that UT does plan to sign the House settlement-related affiliation agreement, and Dellenger adds: “[SEC Commissioner] Greg Sankey says all 16 SEC schools, in fact, did agree to the affiliation agreement, as well as to ‘alter or clarify’ state laws that might contradict the House settlement.” (link)

According to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, FARs’ “traditionally modest foothold is all but gone” as the industry changes, and outgoing Tennessee FAR Don Bruce notes: “Nowhere are academics in the conversation right now. And it’s really disappointing. It’s really frustrating because we [FARs] do show up for work to support student-athletes, to protect our institutions, and to preserve what we believe is worth preserving—and that is the collegiate model.” Last week, Bruce joined other FARs and the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA) in drafting a public letter to the DI Board of Directors and its newly formed decision-making working group sharply criticizing the group for sidelining faculty representatives under the guise of operational efficiency. From the letter: “The NCAA continues to sell the paramount importance of academic standards and student-athlete success…through advertisements, public statements, and congressional testimony. Yet these words ring hollow with the nearly complete omission of FARs from the proposed decision-making structure.” Libit adds: “Notably, the working group included no faculty athletics representatives, which, according to FARA’s letter, was attributed to an ‘oversight’ by staff—but apparently one that could not be remedied after the fact. … On Wednesday afternoon, Pamela Bruzina, the faculty athletics representative at Missouri who serves as FARA’s president, told Sportico that both she and Bruce had just received an invitation to join the working group’s next meeting in mid-June.” Lots more. A former Seton Hall baseball student-athlete has filed a lawsuit against the university, alleging a culture of hazing and accusing HC Rob Sheppard of turning a blind eye. Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming: “The 16-page complaint filed in the Eastern District of New York claims the player, who was a freshman at the time of the alleged incidents, was subject to abuse that included a wrestling match against an older player who put him in a chokehold, being forced to show other players his genitals so they could ‘see what you’ve got down there,’ and watch another player sit naked on the locker room floor and touch himself as teammates looked on. The filing says the coach was aware of this behavior and allowed it to continue.” The complaint also says Seton Hall knew of the hazing before the player enrolled last August but failed to act on it, and contends the school takes hazing allegations among its women’s teams more seriously. “This disparate treatment is based on outdated gender stereotypes that dismiss male hazing as ‘boys being boys’ or acceptable masculine rites of passage, while treating misconduct in female programs as intolerable.” Furthermore, the suit states the player “at all relevant times” met the definitions of both “student” and “employee” “under all applicable statutes.” (link)

The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman offers a glimpse inside how Fox, CBS and NBC draft for the Big Ten’s football schedule and explains that “from the moment Big Ten officials unveiled the 2025 schedule on Dec. 11, 2024, network employees started researching the dates, matchups and locations, then cross-checked them against rival leagues’ games and other sporting events. They studied player development and transfer portal trends. They conducted their own mock drafts and strategy sessions.” CBS EVP of Programming Dan Weinberg: “We lock ourselves in a room for hours, and we’re laboring over every single pick, every single decision. … We’re doing our due diligence from start to finish, and we take our time doing it. This is not something that we just open up some materials a day or two beforehand. This is months and months in the making.” NBC EVP of Programming Justin Byczek observes that “there’s some weeks that are just weaker weeks and having the first or second pick doesn’t really matter. Then there are some weeks you want to make sure you have it covered. I think with the expanded CFP, having greater flexibility of a higher pick in the later weeks has become increasingly important.” As far as the format, Dochterman explains that “Fox owns the top three picks and five of the first 11, while CBS and NBC each have three of the top 11 and rotate the No. 4 overall choice each year. The networks can make trades, which Fox and NBC executed last year for the No. 3 overall pick. NBC moved up for Ohio State at Oregon (which drew 10.4M viewers) while Fox dropped to No. 5 and still wound up with Ohio State at Penn State (9.77M). At No. 4, CBS picked USC at Michigan (6.32M).” Lots more. (link)

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Oak View Group and Legends for possible collusion over bidding to develop the $338M Moody Center at Texas. Bloomberg’s Josh Sisco and Lucas Shaw note the criminal antitrust probe, which began during the Biden administration, is focused on whether the companies illegally coordinated on the bidding, with Oak View ultimately winning the contract in 2018. They add: “Neither Oak View nor Legends has been accused of wrongdoing and antitrust investigations may not lead to enforcement actions. The University of Texas at Austin isn’t under scrutiny in the probe. … The probe grew in part out of a standard antitrust review of a $2.3B acquisition by Legends of rival ASM Global in 2024. Antitrust enforcers let the deal go through, but Legends agreed to pay a $3.5M fine to resolve allegations the two companies started working together on bids for contracts to management venues before the government concluded its review.” (link)

Michigan State President Kevin Guskiewicz says the Spartans are “getting close” on naming a new AD and says of the traits he’s been looking for throughout the search: “It's a much more externally facing job today than it's ever been, and it's about the connectedness to the donor base, the alums, the folks who can help us with sponsorships and to generate revenue." The job description, he adds, calls for “somebody who can run a major corporation. It's a very different world today.” Guskiewicz also says sitting ADs at other universities are "very nervous" about participating in a search, given the impact it could have on their current coaches and donor base. Former Arizona State men’s swimmer and named plaintiff in the House case, Grant House, tells HoopsHQ’s Seth Davis that lawyers informed him he had a week to prepare his family and ASU staff for what was coming before they filed. When the news came out early, House explains: “It kind of all came crashing down. I thought I had a lot more time to tell people and inform people, because that’s what the lawyers had said. At that point, I didn’t understand the magnitude of what it was.” Davis points out that House has made “exactly one appearance as a spectator in Judge Wilken’s courtroom and has barely met his own lead attorneys. House subsequently notes: “A lot of people think I’m the mastermind behind it, but my actual involvement in the inner workings of the case has been pretty minimal and quite infinitesimal. To be here and know that I’ve had really no voice in this settlement has been unfortunate, upsetting and disappointing.” House understands that he could take his name off the case and be rid of all the negative attention and hassle, but he tells Davis he reached that point. “That’s the easy choice to make. I felt like, if I back down from this opportunity and I quit on this, then who’s going to stand up for athletes and who’s going to have the courage to go forward? Because it’s not about me. … I don’t know what’s going to come at the end of this. Even five years into this, I still don’t know how each day is going to unfold. But I believe I’m on the right side of history.” (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey joined The Paul Finebaum Show and noted there was a report earlier in the week that “I had the authority to depart the NCAA. In Monday's press conference my observation was: in our room there are those who asked if the NCAA still works for us? Why are we still in the NCAA? So we talked about a decision-making working group; Chancellor [Glenn] Boyce from Ole Miss and myself were on that. What is our position? We felt, and I think we still feel, that an autonomy division within the NCAA is the best direction. So that's a decision we've made before. How do we position it as this conversation takes place?” Sankey says there won’t be a decision on football scheduling during this week’s meetings and explains: “Part of my concern right now is all the time we’ve wasted in the CFP not making decisions has created a time crunch for us. And we may not have the needed CFP clarity…in sufficient time to make a decision about eight or nine games, which tends towards people thinking about eight. I tend to think we should play nine and we’ll be fine.” Sankey on his working relationship with Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti: “I accept that both conferences are going to have different views on things. I think Tony understands that as well. I think we've communicated openly and honestly and there've been points of agreement, points of disagreement, ideas generated that haven’t been thought of in one place that are thought someplace else and you’re pulled along.” Sankey also notes the Power 4 commissioners have met twice in May alone to discuss the current issues. “So it’s not really exclusionary. It was a recognition that we’re not making any progress through these other means so let’s see if we can come together. I just told our presidents we need to figure out how to reinvigorate the conversation because we've had so much change at the presidential level.” More. (link)

Sankey’s comments about working with the Big Ten come amid reports that Big Ten ADs discussed the 5+11 College Football Playoff model and, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, “many ADs say they would not support such a model if the SEC remains at eight conference games.” As such, Sankey suggests the timeframe by which the SEC must decide on moving to nine conference games for 2026 will arrive sooner than the deadline to decide a future CFP format. "I’m not sure we can work through our (CFP) obligations," by that deadline. Dellenger adds that the deadline to decide on the 2026 SEC football schedule – nine games or eight – is, at the latest, by the start of this coming football season and there is a “real chance that the CFP format negotiations extends into the fall.” (link); On the topic of potentially playing games internationally, Sankey explains: "The economics of our stadiums are just very different from our colleague conferences that have been a part of that. You know, the displacement of a home game in our communities and stadiums, it might be 85K to 100K+, and relocating that, the logistical costs and timing, that's a challenge. But the loss of that home gate, that's really a challenge. We've had some conversations around maybe non-conference games, that might be an away game, but it's never worked. I think I've said this before, the strength of this conference is in our communities, in our states, in the region, and we magnify that on a national and even international level. I don't think that requires us playing internationally." (link)

Several SEC ADs stopped by The Paul Finebaum Show set in Destin as they emerged from the league’s spring meetings, including Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek, who noted the House settlement would create two student-athlete compensation “lanes” – revenue-sharing and “legitimate NIL. And if we can stay within those two lanes in college athletics, I think we have figured this out. But if someone decides to venture and create a third lane, that’s where the problems will occur.” Yurachek also tells Finebaum he was told by Commissioner Greg Sankey that he was told enforcement of the new model will include “someone that has ties professional league that is well-versed in working in arbitration, well-versed in enforcement, well-versed in salary cap management, and I think that's what we need from an enforcement entity because this is a new day and age in college athletics and not one the NCAA is equipped to handle.” (link)
|
Texas AD Chris Del Conte favors “an expanded number [of College Football Playoff teams] for more opportunity” but declined to say if he wants a model with four automatic bids for SEC teams. He added that he wants to retain the original plan of playing some playoff games on home campuses: “I’m all in on that action. … The wear and tear on your fans, and the price of tickets and airlines at that time of year, it's really an expense. In the NFL, the higher-ranked team gets the home advantage. Having a home game and playing Clemson at home was unbelievable. Yet we're still married to that old bowl system for a moment. So you've got to give a little bit of grace as we go through this. But having a home game was great." Del Conte on playing high-profile non-conference football games: “Our fans want to see great games, and we should provide unbelievable, compelling games. I’m a firm believer for us to play Ohio State, Michigan, USC, LSU. We just signed Notre Dame (for a home-and-away series in 2028 and 2029). Those games are important to college. If you have a responsibility to try to create compelling matchups during the regular season, you should at our brand of the University of Texas. We won’t change that philosophy.” (link, link)
|
Georgia AD Josh Brooks tells Paul Finebaum he and Football HC Kirby Smart have discussions about balancing what’s best for Georgia with what’s best for the game. “He talks about how we want to leave the game better than we found it. Of course, Of course we're going to push for what's great for Georgia and what's great for the SEC, but we also keep in mind what’s great for the game…because we have respect for the game because we all worked at different places and we’re thankful for what this game has done for us.” Brooks also points out that Georgia has experienced being left out of the College Football Playoff when they had a strong case to be in, but “we respected the process. … People can play out models and say what if you’re the 13th team, we’ve lived through that. We’ve been good stewards and respected the process. No matter what you do, whether you're talking about football or baseball or whatever, there’s always going to be a team that’s going to be frustrated with the process.” In Georgia’s case, when it comes to possibly adding a ninth league football game, Brooks notes the Bulldogs already have an annual rivalry with Georgia Tech and have scheduled home-and-homes with programs like Notre Dame and Clemson. “We’d have to take a hard look at that and see how it’s going to be valued as we make our schedule over the next 10 years.” (link)
|
Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart wants to make sure the SEC maintains perspective as it makes decisions for the future, telling Paul Finebaum: “It’s so easy to look at decisions in silos or one-offs. I think that one of the things that will be important – at least from our lens at Kentucky and I hope our lens as a conference – is we look at these things in the total.” Barnhart adds: “Is the decision-making around the CFP? Is the decision-making around football scheduling? Those things are all very interrelated, in my mind. For us at Kentucky, they’re very interrelated. I want to make sure that we know what’s most important. Our finances are part of that conversation. Our fan base is a part of that conversation. Keeping hope alive for our programs is really, really important. Opportunity is important for our kids. I think those things are all inner-related. I think as a group of leaders, we’ve gotta make sure that we’re thinking about them together. … “If you think them in pieces, I think that’s when you begin to maybe make some bad decisions. So I’m hopeful that we look at them in the aggregate.” (link)

LSU AD Scott Woodward says the Tigers are working with Oak View Group on a potential $400M multipurpose arena on campus and that ASM Global is no longer being considered. A timeline for the project has yet to be determined, as Woodward explains the earliest it would possibly be completed is in 2029. CBS’ Shehan Jeyarajah submits that “four years into the NIL era, offensive lines are less consistent. There's little argument. The days of Alabama or Georgia hoarding the very best players in America and deploying generational lines is simply over. However, while the top groups are leaking talent, the rest are taking advantage.” Since 2021, yards-per-carry in Power 4 v. Power 4 matchups has decreased from 4.28 to 4.11, and while part of that is likely attributable to schematic changes that put more emphasis on passing, Jeyarajah notes the transfer portal also comes into play. “Continuity along the offensive line is paramount as five players aim to act as one. The results speak for themselves. Out of 40 players to earn All-America honors from CBS Sports in each of the four post-NIL seasons, 36 were homegrown players. Out of 50 players to start on a Joe Moore Award semifinalist in 2024, 39 of them were homegrown. Two of the three finalists, Army and Texas, were completely built through high school recruiting.” Pro Football Focus Head of Analysis Billy Moy adds: "Consistency across the offensive line in general is huge because one bad play from the offensive line can blow up an entire drive. As soon as you start to remove parts of that consistency, the floor isn't necessarily going down a little. You're going way down because of the ramifications it can have, especially in the college season where every single win matters.” Furthermore, Miami (FL) OL coach Alex Mirabal explains: "Offensive line is the most developmental of all positions. You know why? Blocking is not natural. It's something that you have to teach from the ground up, and it takes time. You're teaching them to do something that's unnatural. These bodies are so big, it takes time to gain the core strength they need being a 345-pound man. It just takes time." More. (link)
