Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark tells Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey the league is no longer considering private equity investment: “We’ve explored all that. We did it probably for the better part of the year. We’re not ready to go in that direction, but we know what the options are out there. We’ve been educated at the highest levels. [...] The board’s not ready right now. And there’s probably lots of reasons for that. There are so many different things going on right now. But I think we’re well informed. We know what’s going on in that world. We hired a bank to consult and give us direction—show us what the optionality is out there. And we’re just not ready to jump in just yet.” What about naming rights for the league? “We’re 16 strong now, coast to coast. I think there are ways that we can monetize our business without necessarily giving up our name. So, not that it’s off the table, but I would say it’s probably on pause right now, because we are finding other ways to grow the commercial side of the business without necessarily having to give up the equity that we’re building.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger updates on where things stand on the College Football Playoff access structure after a week of discussion & debate at SEC spring meetings & across the industry: “A majority of the SEC’s coaches did not support the multiple automatic-qualifier playoff structure that had gained momentum with a large group of their administrators. A ninth conference game? No thanks, plenty of coaches said. A season-ending, inner-conference play-in game? No way, some of them told ADs. The 16 coaches weren’t completely aligned against the concepts, but the room wasn’t split either: They preferred a format that is similar to the current 12-team bracket — a 5+11 model with five automatic qualifiers for conference champions and 11 at-large bids instead of the so-called ‘4-4-2-2-1’ model that grants twice as many qualifiers to the Big Ten and SEC (four each) than to the ACC and Big 12 (two each). [...] Every other league has voiced its preference for a particular format. The SEC’s decision tips the scales. What’s the holdup? Questioned about that, [Commissioner Greg] Sankey cited the memorandum of understanding granting authority to the Big Ten and SEC over the future format as long as they hold ‘meaningful consultation’ with the other conferences. ‘We have certain responsibilities in that memo,’ he said. And, so, the CFP format discussions march onward with another twist in tow: a tune-change in the SEC that could very well put it at odds with the Big Ten.” Lots more. (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir says the Knights are “real close” in reaching the $20.5M revenue share mark, then adds, “We'll be there, for sure. I've just got a couple more things we're working on, some revenue pieces that we're putting together. But we'll be there come July 1. We're very happy about that, by the way. We'll become full-share members, but we have a lot more other expenses we have.” On progress for the Roth Tower renovation: “Really good. … It's going faster than I thought. [...] There's a guaranteed maximum price. We have that, so they have to stick to that. A lot of the steel is coming from Florida. That's one of the things I was worried about, some of the tariffs because you get some of it from overseas. There are several steel plants in Florida and domestic — Arkansas, where I used to live — that are high-producing steel companies. Most of our products are being bought domestically. We're under (budget) right now, so we're doing well.” As for potential March Madness expansion: “Why not a couple more? That would be great. It gives more people opportunity. I'm fine with that. It's good, happy about it. We don't know a lot about it except that there's a couple more that (the NCAA) would like to add. The tournament is exciting. Why not expand it?” More. (link)

Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts indicates six Aggies programs will participate in revenue sharing, though he does not provide detail on which six or what percentage of the $20.5M each will receive. “I’m trying to allocate rev share in sports that I can grow revenue, because, at the end of the day — What sports do you have additional seats? Where do you ave attendance, right? And so, you can sort of figure some of that out.” Aggies Women’s Basketball HC Joni Taylor does have concern if her program ends up with a 5% cut ($1.025M): “In the conference we’re in, we have to have maximum support. I think, as we continue to feel this thing out — this is the first year of it — I hope that we can get [to] a place where A&M understand the importance of our rev share number.” (link)

Arkansas AD Hunter Yurachek is still in favor of a selection committee playing a role in deciding who makes the College Football Playoff: “If you go to automatic bids, the function of the committee will change, for sure. But as a current member of the committee, I really think the committee this year got it right. ... If you didn't have the automatic qualifiers, the top 12 teams would have gotten in, and Alabama would have been one of those top 12 teams. I still like the committee. We have a committee that selects every other championship participant [in other sports], and I think it works. There's a question about the number of data points that you have in college football, because you only play 12 or 13 games. But I think the committee has proven itself, most of the time, to be right.” (link)

Utah AD Mark Harlan is also an advocate for a College Football Playoff selection committee: “I’m for the expansion of it, I think that would be really good to have more teams involved. I have great belief in the committee, not just because I served on it, but I’ve seen how hard these people work and know they have good people every year. I hope where it all ends up, whether it’s a straight 16 or perhaps a 5+11, I think that’s the best way to go.” As for new revenue generation, Harlan points to key addition of Deputy AD & CRO Patrick Nowlin, as well as the unique background of Utes President Taylor Randall, “We have a very entrepreneurial school president, who was the dean of the business school. So, we work very closely with him and his team, and we’re looking at things we haven’t contemplated before, and I think we’ve already seen some real uplift on that.” (link) 

More from Georgia AD Josh Brooks, who says of whether UGA has explored in-game signage at Sanford Stadium: “Yeah, you know, some of that stuff is now opened up as categories, so we're having a lot of conversations with those opportunities, whether it be, you know, logos on the 25s or on the banner on the sidelines, things on the basketball court, things at Foley Field. So, we're open to all those, but you want to make sure when you do it, you do it for the right value, and you want to do it with a brand that meets your brand alignment as well. So those are ongoing, and hopefully we'll see some of them in the future.” Brooks also comments on the presentation from Deloitte about NIL Go: “Let's work together, let's get through it because we've asked for guardrails. Now we have them, so instead of us saying, 'Well, here's how I'm going to attack the guardrails,' let's try to work together and work within these guardrails to make it better. And in that process, we may all have to lose a battle here and there on what we think is better for us to win the war ultimately on what's better for the game and what's better for college athletics by following and staying in line and then agreeing as a conference — us all agreeing that we're going to abide by the terms of the settlement. Those are the things that are going to bind us together." (link)

South Carolina AD Jeremiah Donati explains to ESPN/SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum how his law degree and previous experience as an agent help him navigate the changing landscape of college sports. “To have a baseline [legal] understanding of some of the issues we're talking about is absolutely critical. It’s been key to me personally. When I was at TCU and now South Carolina, I think as far as providing some direction and leadership, it's also helpful that I have some idea of where these things are going. Obviously, we’re relying on the real lawyers in the room and the GCs and those at the conference level and on campus, but having some level of knowledge there has been super helpful.” Having spent time as an agent helps Donati see through the shadier aspects of some NIL agents, and he explains: “One of the things I’ve been an advocate for is having some national standard where we can do a better job regulating the agents because, candidly, when you’re in the NFL, for example, you took up to 3% of players’ contracts. And then marketing deals were separate – 10, 15, 20% – but what’s happening now is these student-athletes are being taken advantage of by agents who are not registered, they’re not real agents, and charge them up to 20% just for their rev-share contracts. That’s just taking advantage of these young people. That’s not right. Federal preemption would do a lot of things for us, but I think having an agent registry would be a small thing, but a big step to help our student-athletes.” (link)

There will be a new reporting structure at Washington State. Per the release: “As part of WSU’s continued efforts to improve operational and financial efficiency, the Office of the Chancellor for WSU Pullman is being dissolved effective June 1. The move, recommended by both Pullman Chancellor Dave Cillay and Provost and Executive Vice President Chris Riley-Tillman, reflects a strategic shift in leadership structure as well as President Elizabeth Cantwell’s direct commitment to the Pullman campus. Going forward, President Cantwell will assume executive oversight of the flagship campus. Staff and units previously under the chancellor’s office will be integrated into other areas within the WSU system to enhance alignment and support.” (link)

Major League Baseball has made an eight-figure strategic investment in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL), which begins its inaugural season next week. Sportico’s Kurt Badenhausen and Eben Novy-Williams: “It is the biggest financial commitment ever by MLB directed towards softball. MLB intends to work with the AUSL and its players on sales and marketing, events, distribution, digital and social platforms, and content. AUSL athletes are expected to be incorporated into MLB’s All-Star Game and its postseason. Select AUSL games will air on MLB Network and MLB.TV, and the investment will support league operating costs and growth initiatives. … MLB’s investment was made via the league’s investment fund, Baseball Endowment, L.P. (BELP). Each team owns 3.3% of BELP, and that share is worth $40.5M, per the Atlanta Braves’ most recent SEC filings, or $1.2B cumulatively for the 30 clubs.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker would like a decision sooner rather than later about expanding March Madness and noted during the Big 12’s meetings in Orlando that “our goal here is to try to sort of either get to yes or no sometime in the next few months. There’s a lot of logistical work that would be associated with doing this if we were to go down this road.” If a decision to expand is reached, Baker believes it would take effect next year. “That would be the goal, which is why the window to negotiate it will probably end sometime in early summer.” Baker says of the benefits of expansion: “It’s a way to get some of the teams into the tournament who would be at large teams. Given the fact that we believe in the AQ process and the opportunities that it creates for everybody to have a stake in the tournaments on the men’s and women’s side, we leave some teams out that probably belong there, and it’s a way to get them in.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker also appeared unconcerned by speculation about the SEC potentially leaving the association, remarking during the Big 12’s spring meetings that “I tend to believe what I hear from people when I speak to them directly. … Their voice matters a great deal in part because they take college sports seriously and play at a very high level, just like the Big 12 does and just like many others do. … But I think there’s a path forward here where we can figure out a way to keep everybody in a place where they’re comfortable that they’re both being heard and having the opportunity to play and compete.” Baker also said he hasn’t heard much about the presidential commission on college sports, adding: “We’ve done a bunch of things that were important to Washington with respect to some of their issues with us. And I think we’ve seen enough, especially in the sort of burgeoning state law space, to be able to make a pretty compelling case about state preemption and some of the other issues we’re dealing with. From my point of view, as many voices at the table works for me. I think these issues are important, and they certainly matter a lot to schools and to kids and to college sports.” (link)

The Detroit News’ Tony Paul joins D1.ticker’s Kristen Eargle to talk about Michigan State’s AD search and how MSU’s profile factors in. Paul notes there’s a “lot to like about Michigan State. They have a big seat at the table in the Big Ten, so there's Big Ten revenues at Michigan State. You’re talking $200M coming in. So, they're in a good position there but they're still kind of lagging behind the Ohio States and the Michigans of the world. … The question that they need to ask moving forward is what they want to do with that position. Do they want to make it a school that tries to be good in every sport, in all the non-revenue sports like Michigan has been able to do? Michigan wins Big Ten titles in every sport, including football. Or do they want to go back to the days of Mark Hollis when he was the athletic director…when they focus on football and basketball and they’re very good at both and it really boosted the school’s profile.” Paul also notes MSU is fortunate to have a “couple billionaires at their disposal for fundraising. … So, they’ve got these guys they can go to anytime they want to get money. But it’s the rest of the network, it’s the smaller donors, it’s the untapped donors that maybe they haven’t got in with or even considered. And I think when you boost yourself nationally it opens the eyes to those other donors that might not be on your radar.” Full conversation. (link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks notes the cost-trimming component of preparing for revenue-sharing means people like Bulldogs Deputy AD for Finance Stephanie Ransom and her team are “not the most popular people in the athletic department right now. … I can walk into those meetings and play good cop, bad cop depending on what mood I’m in that day and help them out. It’s been a lot of work to really refine the budget.” Brooks explains the strategy is based on impacting the student-athlete experience as little as possible and notes he’s asked every program to rank priorities to find out where they could be more efficient. The Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer notes the belts being tightened aren’t limited to Athens. For example, Auburn Executive Deputy AD Jared Benko says: “Every school I’ve talked to has tightened the belt and cut expenses and tried to continue to be good stewards of those dollars. From a revenue standpoint, you’re always looking to grow in revenue.” (link)

Tennessee Chancellor Donde Plowman tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger that UT does plan to sign the House settlement-related affiliation agreement, and Dellenger adds: “[SEC Commissioner] Greg Sankey says all 16 SEC schools, in fact, did agree to the affiliation agreement, as well as to ‘alter or clarify’ state laws that might contradict the House settlement.” (link)

According to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, FARs’ “traditionally modest foothold is all but gone” as the industry changes, and outgoing Tennessee FAR Don Bruce notes: “Nowhere are academics in the conversation right now. And it’s really disappointing. It’s really frustrating because we [FARs] do show up for work to support student-athletes, to protect our institutions, and to preserve what we believe is worth preserving—and that is the collegiate model.” Last week, Bruce joined other FARs and the Faculty Athletics Representatives Association (FARA) in drafting a public letter to the DI Board of Directors and its newly formed decision-making working group sharply criticizing the group for sidelining faculty representatives under the guise of operational efficiency. From the letter: “The NCAA continues to sell the paramount importance of academic standards and student-athlete success…through advertisements, public statements, and congressional testimony. Yet these words ring hollow with the nearly complete omission of FARs from the proposed decision-making structure.” Libit adds: “Notably, the working group included no faculty athletics representatives, which, according to FARA’s letter, was attributed to an ‘oversight’ by staff—but apparently one that could not be remedied after the fact. … On Wednesday afternoon, Pamela Bruzina, the faculty athletics representative at Missouri who serves as FARA’s president, told Sportico that both she and Bruce had just received an invitation to join the working group’s next meeting in mid-June.” Lots more. A former Seton Hall baseball student-athlete has filed a lawsuit against the university, alleging a culture of hazing and accusing HC Rob Sheppard of turning a blind eye. Front Office Sports’ Margaret Fleming: “The 16-page complaint filed in the Eastern District of New York claims the player, who was a freshman at the time of the alleged incidents, was subject to abuse that included a wrestling match against an older player who put him in a chokehold, being forced to show other players his genitals so they could ‘see what you’ve got down there,’ and watch another player sit naked on the locker room floor and touch himself as teammates looked on. The filing says the coach was aware of this behavior and allowed it to continue.” The complaint also says Seton Hall knew of the hazing before the player enrolled last August but failed to act on it, and contends the school takes hazing allegations among its women’s teams more seriously. “This disparate treatment is based on outdated gender stereotypes that dismiss male hazing as ‘boys being boys’ or acceptable masculine rites of passage, while treating misconduct in female programs as intolerable.” Furthermore, the suit states the player “at all relevant times” met the definitions of both “student” and “employee” “under all applicable statutes.” (link)

+ The National Football Foundation will lower the win threshold for coaches to be eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame from 60% to 59.5%. The new standard opens the door for former Texas Tech/Washington State/Mississippi State Football HC Mike Leach (59.6%), former Oklahoma State/Kansas/LSU HC Les Miles (59.7%) and former Pittsburgh/Texas A&M/Mississippi State HC Jackie Sherrill (59.5%) to be eligible for induction. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman offers a glimpse inside how Fox, CBS and NBC draft for the Big Ten’s football schedule and explains that “from the moment Big Ten officials unveiled the 2025 schedule on Dec. 11, 2024, network employees started researching the dates, matchups and locations, then cross-checked them against rival leagues’ games and other sporting events. They studied player development and transfer portal trends. They conducted their own mock drafts and strategy sessions.” CBS EVP of Programming Dan Weinberg: “We lock ourselves in a room for hours, and we’re laboring over every single pick, every single decision. … We’re doing our due diligence from start to finish, and we take our time doing it. This is not something that we just open up some materials a day or two beforehand. This is months and months in the making.” NBC EVP of Programming Justin Byczek observes that “there’s some weeks that are just weaker weeks and having the first or second pick doesn’t really matter. Then there are some weeks you want to make sure you have it covered. I think with the expanded CFP, having greater flexibility of a higher pick in the later weeks has become increasingly important.” As far as the format, Dochterman explains that “Fox owns the top three picks and five of the first 11, while CBS and NBC each have three of the top 11 and rotate the No. 4 overall choice each year. The networks can make trades, which Fox and NBC executed last year for the No. 3 overall pick. NBC moved up for Ohio State at Oregon (which drew 10.4M viewers) while Fox dropped to No. 5 and still wound up with Ohio State at Penn State (9.77M). At No. 4, CBS picked USC at Michigan (6.32M).” Lots more. (link)

The U.S. Justice Department is investigating Oak View Group and Legends for possible collusion over bidding to develop the $338M Moody Center at Texas. Bloomberg’s Josh Sisco and Lucas Shaw note the criminal antitrust probe, which began during the Biden administration, is focused on whether the companies illegally coordinated on the bidding, with Oak View ultimately winning the contract in 2018. They add: “Neither Oak View nor Legends has been accused of wrongdoing and antitrust investigations may not lead to enforcement actions. The University of Texas at Austin isn’t under scrutiny in the probe. … The probe grew in part out of a standard antitrust review of a $2.3B acquisition by Legends of rival ASM Global in 2024. Antitrust enforcers let the deal go through, but Legends agreed to pay a $3.5M fine to resolve allegations the two companies started working together on bids for contracts to management venues before the government concluded its review.” (link)

The NCAA Division I men’s and women’s lacrosse championship games averaged 567K and 257K viewers on ESPN, respectively. The men’s semifinals brought 282K viewers to the network, a 13% YoY increase, while the women’s semis experienced an 18% YoY jump. (link)
