Tulane Sports Law Director Gabe Feldman sits down with Steve Molo, the lead counsel for over 100 objectors to the House settlement, to discuss the nature of objectors’ issues with the settlement, and Molo identifies a key issue as it relates to roster limits: “It’s discretionary. The schools don’t have to do that, they don’t have to live by that. If they had to live by that, it would go a long way to resolving the issues caused by the roster caps. But it really doesn't, it's illusory, it's not really relief. It’s something that might happen; athletes are entitled to something that should happen and will happen and should not be harmed as a result of the settlement and that's what's happening still. … To adopt this whole concept of the designated student, that is still discretionary with the schools. They’re not required to do that, and many student-athletes are left in this situation where they've been cut from teams or told that they're not going to be invited back, however you want to phrase that. They’ve entered the transfer portal, which is clogged. The estimate that I've read in the media – and it's hard to get a hard count on this – but the estimate I’ve read is there are more than 25,000 students. These students face additional out-of-pocket costs having to look for a new school, they face interruption to their academic careers going to another school that may have different academic requirements – the credits might not transfer.” Molo goes on to point out that roster limits were a late addition to the settlement and argues they have nothing to do with the issues that were raised in the first instance. “This is something that the NCAA has interjected as a way to save money for the schools and get a release for it. They’re getting a release here. If they had the ability to do this before – which, schools could eliminate teams, they could cut players, whatever – they faced potential legal consequences for that. Here, they’re shielding themselves with the release of the settlement and trying to do the same thing. It’s just not fair.” Full podcast. (link)

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey re-emphasized on the Dan Patrick Show his “longtime personal opinion on a playoff format: A bracket of the top 12+ ranked teams with no automatic qualifiers,” according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Sankey: “I’d give no allocation (AQs). When we get into rooms, we make political compromises.” Dellenger also notes that “Sankey again suggested that the CFP selection criteria needs to change to incentivize the scheduling of highly competitive non-conference games. Asked directly about universal scheduling, Sankey said he’d be ‘happy for a coordinated conversation to try to get scheduling right.’” Sankey also noted the Power 4 commissioners are scheduled to discuss next CFP format steps on a call tomorrow, adding: “Disagreements are fine and make us better. We have a responsibility to work together.” (link)

The Detroit News’ Connor Earegood points out that new Michigan State AD J Batt, a former soccer student-athlete at North Carolina, has a connection to MSU via President Kevin Guskiewicz, who worked in sports medicine for the Tar Heels during Batt’s playing days. Guskiewicz tells Earegood: “I had a pretty good suspicion that he was going to have great success. I'm just thrilled that we're going to be reunited, and I think he'll, again, take Spartan athletics to the next level. … I said from the outset that I wanted to hire an athletics director that could run a major corporation, and J Batt I am convinced will, in fact, do that. He's done it at Georgia Tech for the past 3½ years. He's been at several other Power Five schools, and he understands the business side, which is really important.” Guskiewicz adds: “I'm going to hand the keys over to J Batt to run the athletics department, and he's going to have full responsibility to run it.” The Spartans also received some input from former Football HC Nick Saban, with whom Batt developed a close relationship at Alabama, and Guskiewicz explains: “We heard loud and clear from Coach Saban that J Batt is a superstar and somebody who will relate to coaches really well. But he'll also develop a strategy for fundraising.” (link)

Clemson AD Graham Neff joins the Gramlich and Mac Lain podcast to discuss several topics, including the Tigers’ football scheduling philosophy and notes: “We’ve been really consistent with playing 10 of the 12 games are Power 5 games. We’ve got our eight ACC games, we’ve got South Carolina, that’s nine, and we’ve got this extra one that we’ve scheduled. And that’s been Georgia and Texas A&M and LSU this year and Notre Dame when they've been on the schedule and off. So, we're going to absolutely, at a minimum, continue that type of methodology. Now, as strength-of-schedule value continues to take shape – and I hope, I think there's some some momentum towards strength-of-schedule becoming even more prominent as it relates to evaluating resumes and College Football Playoff expanding – so it’s not as much sorted just by win-loss record, but there’s more of a total evaluation of resume. That has good tailwinds of being good for fans because it would purport to stronger schedules and maybe instead of playing nine or 10 Power 5 games, schools are playing 10 or 11.” When it comes to generating new revenue via jersey patches and/or on-field signage, Neff notes one difference between college and pro sports is that, in Clemson’s case, there are 28K students in the 18-22-year old demographic. “So our ability to be really integrated throughout campus…that type of synergy and connectivity from a total campus standpoint to present and connect with potential partners for activation and partnership, that’s where there’s great value and great partnership, which goes well beyond whatever logo is painted on the football field.” Full podcast. AthleticDirectorU Co-Founder Jason Belzer breaks down what athletic departments should consider when figuring out how to pay student-athletes and posits: “Let’s disabuse ourselves of the notion that this is simply about wiring money. Revenue share distribution is a deeply complex financial undertaking with implications across legal compliance, taxation, technology, and athlete welfare. Here are the foundational components that must be in place: IRS compliance & tax infrastructure, custom payment structuring, regulatory and Title IX tracking, financial forecasting and cap management and cybersecurity and data protection.” One Power 4 CFO tells Belzer: “We’ve never had to build a payroll infrastructure for a population this young, this transient, and this decentralized. We’re essentially being asked to stand up a mini-financial institution inside an athletics department, and the exposure is enormous if we get it wrong—even once.” Belzer also points out that rev-share systems could possibly do more than simply pay athletes. “Imagine a feature that allows athletes to voluntarily donate a portion of their earnings back to the program, campus initiatives, or charitable causes. Not only could this reduce tax liabilities, but it would reframe athletes as philanthropic stakeholders. It also unlocks a future fundraising model rooted in shared value and long-term affinity.” Lots more. (link)

The Big East last week concluded its spring meetings, which included discussions on the House settlement, NCAA governance, future television and digital coverage plans, and strategies to maintain the conference’s national successes in basketball. During the meeting, conference presidents elected St. John’s President Rev. Brian J. Shanley to a two-year term as Chair of the Big East Board of Directors. He will begin his term on June 30, 2025. Attendees included NCAA President Charlie Baker, Fox Sports EVP Jordan Bazant and Marquee Events VP Joel Fisher, among others. Commissioner Val Ackerman: “This year's meetings allowed us to reflect on the successes of the past year, take stock of fast-moving currents in the college sports world, and identify priorities as we plan for next year and beyond. We believe our basketball focus, broad national television reach, the stature of our coaches, the appeal of our conference tournaments, our brand strength and our unified strategic outlook will create advantages for our schools as we look to maintain our future stability and standing.” (link)

As part of an infractions settlement with the NCAA, Florida Gulf Coast is vacating 82 wins across several sports. According to the Fort Myers News-Press’ Alex Martin and Ed Reed, the “hardest hit was softball, which had to vacate 31 wins, and its 2024 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship, along with an NCAA Tournament win over Florida Atlantic. The ruling dropped longtime coach Dave Deiros, who retired following the 2025 season, from 810 career wins to 779. Baseball lost 22 games, including their ASUN regular season co-championship from the 2024 season and a win over No. 16 Florida State on March 4. They also forfeited three wins to Central Arkansas during the 2024 season.” Men’s basketball lost nine wins, while women’s hoops lost six. Men’s soccer lost seven. (link)

Duke Baseball HC Chris Pollard shares his disappointment with the ejection of standout student-athlete AJ Gracia during the weekend’s regional final against Oklahoma State. After hitting a home run that brought the Blue Devils back to within one, Gracia returned to the dugout where his teammates placed a hard hat on his head, as they’ve done all year. Later in the inning when Duke came back to take the lead, Gracia excitedly took a couple steps out of the dugout, thereby breaking the rule about home run props, and was ejected. Pollard: “He took two steps out of our dugout not to show anybody up, not to be disrespectful of the game, not to disrespect Oklahoma State, [but] to cheer on his teammate. … This rule and this type of action by the umpire are why people get so frustrated with the NCAA. I’m disappointed for AJ Gracia that he won’t play in one of the biggest games of his life when we start the super regional. I'm disappointed for Duke baseball, and I’m disappointed for college baseball. I want to get that off my chest, and if I get fined, I get fined.” (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “more info is being socialized with other conferences about the discussions Thursday from SEC ADs & presidents. The league is indicating that it is *not* supporting a multi-AQ format (4-4-2-2-1), preferring instead more at-large bids + a selection committee criteria change. Though the league showed support for a multi-AQ format in CFP meetings with fellow commissioners, the pushback from a variety of groups – including its own coaches + CFP data provided by the conference – has moved university administrators toward a different approach. Leaders from two of the SEC’s biggest brands – Georgia & Alabama – were influential during conversations this week over a pivot from a format that potentially limited the league to four playoff spots & required an additional ‘play-in’ game. … The 5+11 format…is in no way a guarantee for approval as the Big Ten may not support such a model if the SEC remains at 8 conference games. The two parallel discussions – CFP format + SEC 8 or 9 games – are expected to continue the next few weeks.” Meanwhile, Dellenger notes it “seems doubtful” the SEC would move to nine games without an overhaul of the selection committee’s criteria. Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts: “If we’re not confident that the decision-making about who gets in and why, and the metrics around it, it’s going to be hard for my colleagues to get to nine games.” (link, link)

ESPN’s Bill Connelly attempts to answer how much more difficult a nine-game SEC football schedule would be by creating “four years' worth of nine-game SEC schedules based around the super-clean, super-easy idea of permanent conference rivalries.” The results: “For the league's elite teams, moving to nine games won't make much of a difference. For instance, with Georgia's current schedule, SP+ projects it to win 9.8 games on average, with an 84.9% chance of going at least 9-3 (the hypothetical cutoff line for SEC teams hoping to get into the field). But with an abridged, three-game nonconference schedule -- for the most part, I shrank nonconference schedules by getting rid of teams' second games against Group of 5 teams and leaving one game against a power-conference opponent, one against a G5 team and one against an FCS team – Georgia averages 9.7 wins over four simulated seasons, with a 79.6% chance of reaching 9-3 or better on average. … For the league's light heavyweights, however, things get trickier. Florida has a 43.7% chance of finishing 9-3 or better in 2025, but in a nine-SEC-games universe, that drops to 19.6%. Four others see their odds drop by at least 10%, and current long shots like Vanderbilt (10.2% chance of going 9-3 in 2025) see their odds almost completely vanish (0.1%). Overall, an average of 6.2 SEC teams are projected to go 9-3 or better in 2025. In a nine-game universe, that average shrinks to 4.7. With a 16-team field, you could say that the league would go from expecting around six teams in the field to having four or five teams safely in and campaigning for some 8-4 teams. Meanwhile, the league would also go from an average of 13.4 bowl-eligible teams to just 11.4.” More data. (link)

Puck’s John Ourand breaks down the issue with expanding March Madness after NCAA President Charlie Baker last week revealed talks were underway with CBS and TNT: “Any expansion would situate more games on the opening two days of the tournament – the first Tuesday and Wednesday – when CBS or TNT Sports are already carrying the play-in games. A significant increase in rights fees based on a handful of early-round games is fanciful, too: CBS and TNT Sports, which hold tournament rights through 2032, are not contractually obligated to increase their rights fee if the tournament expands. But…CBS and TNT Sports could agree to pay a higher fee if the NCAA modifies the way that they sell corporate sponsorships around the tournament, among other possible sweeteners. We’re still in the experimental, market-testing phase. This should all shake out in the next few months.” (link)

FIU AD Scott Carr joins the Inside College Athletics podcast to discuss how he’s always been a three-to-five-year strategic thinker,” but NIL has forced him to become “comfortable being uncomfortable. I’m a four-to-six-month thinker. We need to make a decision today. We’ve got to do this because we need to retain talent, we’ve got to recruit talent, whatever it may be so we need to do this today and I’ll figure out some of the implications of that four to six months from now. A lot of that’s financial. If you’re going to come up with some money for NIL that probably means you don’t have money for something else. That something else is a problem six months from now I’m going to figure that out over the next six months.” As an example of this pivot in mindset, Carr points out that he put a facility master plan “on the shelf. About 14 months ago I said, ‘There's a draft. We’re going to put it on the shelf because right now we need rosters before we need new facilities. And that’s a challenge because we need new facilities here. We need some renovations done and we’re going to still have to work on those. But if somebody comes up and says here’s a dollar, that dollar is going to NIL right now.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit observes that Deloitte has for years “maintained an extensive presence in both the athletics and higher education sectors; however, the prospect of one arm of the firm specifically advising athletic departments on NIL issues while another plays a role in evaluating or adjudicating athlete NIL deals at those same schools raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest.” A company spokesperson tells Libit that “Deloitte maintains a robust governance process and thoroughly vets all projects across a number of dimensions including potential conflicts. Regarding this project, the new entity that will be stood up by the defendant conferences’ settlement implementation committee (pending the final approval for the settlement), [which] will be responsible for the enforcement of its terms, including all decision-making pertaining to third-party NIL deals.” An official with one of the conferences tells Libit there will be “bright lines” separating the firm’s consulting work from its clearinghouse duties and those boundaries that will be clearly defined in Deloitte’s contract with the College Sports Commission. More, including news that Texas A&M previously engaged Deloitte for consulting work to the tune of $99K, as did East Carolina for $50K. (link)

Texas Men’s Basketball HC Sean Miller says the latest figures from the transfer portal essentially show "25% of the pie missing" in terms of quality veteran players because of the reduction of players with a COVID year left. "One thing that's definitely going to change, and I don't think it's talked a lot about in basketball, is the no COVID year. In our case, we had a number of players in my three years at Xavier that were exercising their fifth year. It's a year that doesn't exist right now." Miller believes that lack of supply will probably end up hurting the power conferences with the most to spend. "I think just that alone, taking that one layer of talent, where you can convince an All-SEC player to return for a fifth year, and now that that's not in play, I don't think our league will remain as old. So I think just with that alone, I don't know if 14 of 16 [bids], I hope, but I can certainly see the effect of that moving forward.” Florida HC Todd Golden takes a similar position, telling ESPN’s Pete Thamel: "I think the league will be very good again this coming year, I do. The teams have recruited well, and we're the premier basketball conference right now. I think it's pretty clear. So will it be as elite as it was this past year? I'm not sure…but I do think we have a chance to have another great year." (link)

UTSA reported $1.73M in total baseball operating expenses for FY24, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes Texas, the team the Roadrunners beat twice en route to winning the Austin region, reported $6.35M, excluding an additional $5.2M paid out in coaching severance payments. Libit looks deeper and points out that “the disparity was stark across nearly every category. UTSA paid head coach Pat Hallmark $272,296, while assistants Ryan Aguayo and Zach Butler earned a combined $240,741. (The program added a third assistant, Michael Cavazos, last August.) Texas spent $1.8M on its former head coach David Pierce and another $1.22M on three full-time assistants. After firing Pierce last June, the Longhorns hired former Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle, who reportedly earns $1M this season with a contract that rises to $2.68M by 2026–27. Recruiting budgets also underscored the resource gap: UTSA spent $28,001, while Texas allocated $147,739. UTSA reported $96,202 in equipment and uniform expenses—less than a third of Texas’s $317,227. Unlike Texas, UTSA had no support staff expenditures, because it had no support staff. That changed in October with the hiring of Luke Malone as director of player development and analytics. … The Roadrunners have already made a compelling case for at least one thing next season: a bigger budget. Then again, that would kind of defeat their point.” (link)

Florida Baseball HC Kevin O’Sullivan “was very upset with the schedule change for yesterday’s matchup against ECU, according to WNCT’s Brian Bailey, who reports: “He ripped into the NCAA staff here in Conway. He also reportedly had things to say to the Pirates as they crossed the field this morning.” (link); Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina Baseball HC Kevin Schnall had this to say: “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say this or not, but I believe in standing up for what’s right. And what transpired this morning on our field – another coach disrespected our associate AD, who works as hard as anybody in our entire program. He disrespected our field crew, who are the salt of the earth. These guys would do anything for our program. It’s not okay, and this needs to be brought up. Absolutely disrespectful. As a coach, it's our job to mentor young kids and the way he treated the two site reps, the way he treated our associate AD, the way he treated our field crew is absolutely unacceptable. That’s what I'm most disappointed about. He’s a national champion coach who thinks he can come in here and try to bully people around. Disappointed. Disappointed somebody that a lot of coaches look up to – for him to act that way, really disappointed. He disrespected a hall of fame coach who’s the site rep here.” (link)
