Tuskegee AD Reginald Ruffin sits down with HBCU GameDay’s Steven J. Gaither to dive more into facilities, the pipeline of SIAC HCs to the FCS and more. With a number of new facility upgrades at Cleve L. Abbott Memorial Alumni Stadium, Chappie James Arena, and the Pepsico Tennis Courts, Ruffin emphasizes: “Everybody likes brick and mortar now, Steve. It isn't about flesh and blood anymore. These student-athletes come on your campus; if you don't have anything to show from a facility standpoint, they're not coming, they're not attending. I don't care how major or how great Booker T. Washington was or how great George Washington Carver was. If that locker room doesn't look good and if that basketball arena, that baseball, softball, track don't look good, they're not coming.” Asked about the pipeline of successful SIAC HCs to the FCS, Ruffin: “The problem that we are facing as coaches at this level is everybody is picking from the kitty litter and they pick all the great players that we have, even myself here at Tuskegee, where we lost kids to Division I schools. These guys get an opportunity because of the new NIL deals and the opportunity to cash in on their name, image, and likeness, and so we can't get upset. It's going to be hard to duplicate because your team is going to be different every year. […] You ask any coach, and they are all going through the same thing when it comes to this new NIL. I want student-athletes to have the opportunity to capitalize on that and be able to make the money that they have to or need to make, but I wish it would be more confined and governed where everybody just doesn't get a chance to just continue chasing a dollar but gets an opportunity because graduation is the most important thing. It seems like now, with the NCAA allowing everybody to jump from school to school to school, I wonder about the graduation rate, I wonder about academic success, I wonder about all that. So now when the eligibility is over with, what will they do when the money runs out?” More. (link)

@1QLeadership Question: What role does leadership play in shaping feelings of inclusion (or exclusion) among Black women in college athletics administration?

Dr. Jennifer Jacobs, Head Volleyball Coach at Augustana University, discusses her dissertation research outcomes after interviewing multiple Black women from all divisions of college athletics. One of the key findings is that the default for leadership is to be exclusionary.

+ There were no inclusionary moments that didn't have direct involvement with supervisors

+ Inclusive leadership is an active and intentional process

Dr. Jacobs also talked about her fundraising process at Augustana, which supports 75% of her annual budget for the volleyball program. She has raised roughly $1 million over the past few years.

As it celebrates its 25th season of competition, the GNAC rolls out its new brand. PMG has released its 2025 State of Sports Report, which explores the shifting dynamic of modern fandom. Here are some key findings from more than 1,000 respondents, aged 18 and older: “Over 51% of respondents reported that their favorite team or athlete's performance affects their overall mood at least moderately. 38% of Millennials report that their team's performance significantly impacts their emotions, compared to only 16% of Gen Z and Boomers. 75% of Gen Z fans engage with secondary sports content more frequently than with full games. Gen Z consumes sports through a variety of devices and media coverage rather than only live games. 51% of respondents connect specific brands with their favorite teams or athletes, and 25% of those surveyed consider the values of athletes to be an important factor when evaluating brands. 44% of Millennials follow sports content creators, who now compete with traditional athletes for influence. 35% of Millennial respondents reported that they are paying more attention to sports and athletes now than before.” (link)
