The Championships Committee is recommending splitting the National Collegiate Fencing Championship into separate championships for men and women that would still be held at the same site. The change would allow for each to win their own national title, as “Under the current scoring format, institutions that sponsor only women’s fencing face a statistical impossibility of winning a national championship.” The group is putting forth a recommendation to increase per diem to $150 and $60 for traveling teams and hosts, respectively, in FY26 and FY27, as it is already slated to increase to that amount in FY28. The recommendation, which goes to the Strategic Planning and Finance Committee, would cost $1.2M in FY26 and $608K in FY27. Also of note, the committee also discussed the future of playing rules as DI is considering governance changes. “The Division III Championships Committee discussed potential models at length and agreed on some general principles, including that playing rules should continue being as consistent as possible among divisions but that a structure should be in place that allows Division III to continue being able to adopt playing rules that are appropriate and logistically and financially feasible for its membership to implement.” (link)

Dr. Jennifer Jacobs, Head Volleyball Coach at Augustana University, discusses her dissertation research outcomes after interviewing multiple Black women from all divisions of college athletics. One of the key findings is that the default for leadership is to be exclusionary.

+ There were no inclusionary moments that didn't have direct involvement with supervisors

+ Inclusive leadership is an active and intentional process

Dr. Jacobs also talked about her fundraising process at Augustana, which supports 75% of her annual budget for the volleyball program. She has raised roughly $1 million over the past few years.

New Husson AD Amanda Nelson has been placed on administrative leave after being named as a defendant in a lawsuit from her time as AD at Del Norte High School. The lawsuit alleges Nelson of “negligent hiring, supervision, and retention” of her husband after he allegedly asked an underage student to engage in sexual relations, continued to be allowed to “interact, supervise, and/or oversee students” after this incident, and boasted about previous underage relations. Husson’s statement: “Our university takes allegations of this nature very seriously. While our employment process includes a background check, it returned no cause for concern in the hiring process However, given these allegations in a civil lawsuit and following our standard procedure, this individual has been placed on administrative leave pending an independent investigation.” (link)

Keystone’s merger with the Washington Institute for Education and Research (WIER) has been approved by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The college is required to submit a complex substantive change report by September 2 that includes the status of the transaction, financial planning and multiyear budgets, an update on the hire of a qualified CFO, an implemented written conflict-of-interest policy, a transparent governance structure and more. (link); The Times-Tribune’s Scott Walsh details how the Giants’ Baseball program managed through the possibility of closure as 27 players entered the transfer portal last year, leaving 43 still on the roster to win KC’s 20th straight United East title. HC Jamie Shevchik: “They don’t quit. The easy thing could have been shutting the doors, quitting, not fighting and that’s it. Everybody goes their separate ways. Our administration fought their (butts) off to keep the doors open. If you’re a coach, an employee or a student here, how do you not rally behind that and fight for the college as well? I think that’s what these kids did as a baseball team.” (link)

The MIAC unveils its Football schedules through 2034, moving to a single round-robin format as each member will play one non-conference game before its nine-game conference schedule. The team with the best conference record will earn the league’s postseason AQ. “Starting this fall, game times for contests played after Daylight Saving Time ends will kick off at noon (previously 1:00 p.m.). This change was adopted by MIAC membership to match the NCAA Championships start time and provide teams with an extra hour of sunlight for late-season games. Teams may elect to kick off later if playing at a venue with game-appropriate lights.” (link, link - full matrix)

Amidst financial concerns, new Averett President Thomas Powell says the financial issues are “not fatal” and the institution will not close. Powell’s financial recovery plan includes repaying outstanding balances to vendors, repaying the endowment, evaluating academic offerings and tuition costs, selling property and more. Powell also plans to work on a four-year plan to make the university’s recovery sustainable and realistic. (link)

Nike is raising its prices in the U.S., according to Complex’s Brendan Dunne, who reports price increases will range from $2 to $10. Jordan apparel and accessories, all kids’ footwear and apparel, and all footwear under $100 will not be affected, nor will Nike Air Force 1s. Dunne: “Nike’s decision to raise prices in the U.S. comes in the wake of President Trump’s new tariffs,” but “Complex’s sources said that Nike has not explicitly mentioned Trump nor his policies in rolling out the price changes, instead citing ‘expected inflation’ and ‘economic conditions.’” (link)
