ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report Arkansas State’s hire of former Houston AD Chris Pezman as the next leader in Jonesboro. AState Nation added the expectation of an official announcement on Monday with an intro presser on Wednesday. (link)

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler reports San Diego State, Boise State, Utah State, Fresno State & Colorado State all officially notified the Mountain West of their intention to exit the league ahead of today’s deadline when exit fees doubled from $18M to $36M. Aztecs AD John David Wicker at a donor event last week: “I’m very pleased where we are from a Pac-12 standpoint. Obviously, we have to add another team. That will happen. I have a good idea of what our TV is going to look like with the Pac-12. Right now, we’re trying to wrap up various items around that. But we have a really good idea of what that will be, and we’re pleased with what that is going to be. It feels like the next four or five weeks, there’s a lot that’s going to happen that’s going to help dictate what we’re doing moving forward.” (link)

WSAZ Sports Director Keith Morehouse joins D1.ticker's Kristen Eargle to provide an inside look at Marshall's AD search and cites creativity in revenue generation as a key quality the committee should prioritize. Morehouse also identifies the biggest challenges facing the Herd, describes the relationship between the athletic department and main campus, how Marshall can differentiate itself within the Sun Belt and more. Morehouse heard directly from President Brad Smith about what the university is looking for in its next AD and says: “Specifically they’re looking for ‘one who possesses a strong business acumen, one who is innovative trailblazer, one who is skilled as a facilitative leader, strategic thinking, driving for results, building high-performance teams, innovating for impact and inspiring through action.’ Now a lot of that sounds like a lot of big words on a form, but I do think you do have to be creative in this day and time in athletics to fundraise and turn that money around and keep your programs not only afloat, but going well.” Morehouse notes it’s important than when “Marshall does hire its next athletic director, you’ve got to find somebody that wants to be at your school. Obviously there's movement, upwards movement in athletics, and a lot of people have desires to go up, but it's certainly something the committee will look at to try to make sure somebody wants to be in Huntington, West Virginia, with Marshall in the Sun Belt.” Full Q&A. For those looking for the edge in the interview process, the D1.dossier for the AD opening at Marshall is available. Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller: “The D1.dossier was extremely helpful for the interview process by identifying the key stakeholders and providing the current landscape at Coastal Carolina. It saved me a tremendous amount of time from having to research and gather it myself. I appreciate the service and highly recommend it to my counterparts around the country.” (link)

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman joins Collegiate Sports Associates Founder Todd Turner on the latest episode of The Journey to discuss her career path, including the lessons she learned from former NBA Commissioner David Stern, as well as the changing dynamics of college athletics and the need to ensure academics remains a core piece of the equation. On the latter point, Ackerman explains that “where I think we have to get to, Todd, is some place where academics remain critical and the athletes are not just hired guns, but they’re students who are in good academic standing at their schools in pursuit of a degree. If we lose that, then ‘college sports’ is over. It’s something else. It’s not college sports. So I hope we can hold onto that.” Ackerman also emphasizes the need to hold onto March Madness “more or less in its current form. That may be down the list of things to worry about, but that’s one of the greatest events in sports as far as I’m concerned. … So, holding onto that and the magic of that and the Cinderella components of that I think is critically important.” Furthermore, Ackerman believes “we need a system where the NCAA has the ability to make some rules. It’s a national enterprise. It runs national competitions. Schools from around the country compete against each other, and we need some uniformity in the operation of that enterprise. And right now everything under the sun is prone to a legal challenge, and it’s no way to run a railroad. So we need some protection there and some protection in general against all these legal challenges.” Check out the full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard with an update on the videoboard updates inside Jack Trice Stadium: “I saw the one on the south plane today from my office and it’s as clear as my television at home. It’s like anything, technology changes and so it was time to update the boards and we’ll all benefit from the technology because the pixels will be that much tighter and it’ll be a better picture on both ends of the stadium for fan experience.” As for the hire of a new university President in Ames: “Athletics is a big part of the university and the world we’re working in today makes that even more of an issue. So, whoever gets hired is going to have to be versed, or understand or quickly be brought up to speed on the landscape going forward.” (link)

South Carolina will retain Baseball HC Paul Mainieri and Gamecocks AD Jeremiah Donati explains the choice: “The decision was this. At this level, you don’t hire coaches on one-time tryouts. You make a commitment to the coach. You invest in the coach. And you’ve got to give them a little runway to prove that they can lead the program. Sometimes when you’re transitioning, there’s a lot of things that need to be changed within the program — whether it’s from the culture or the personnel. And so those just take time. … Obviously it was a disappointing season and we, as a program, expect more. We will get better. And it’s not one thing, it’s a lot of things. We need to coach better, we need to play better, we need to recruit better as a program. And so we’re committed to doing those things. We’ve got plans to do those things and have already started working through those plans. (link)

Arizona State Football HC Kenny Dillingham tells On3’s Pete Nakos that he has no plans of leaving because he envisions the Sun Devils becoming the blue blood of the 2020s: “You can build something very, very unique. Every 10 years, a team shows up on the map, and they’re a blue blood to the next generation. They’re not a blue blood to the people my age, but they’re a blue blood to the 10-year-olds, the 11-year-olds and the 12-year-olds who you’re eventually going to recruit. You have Clemson this last cycle, from 2010 to 2020. They just showed up. People think they’ve been around forever. You have Oregon from 2000 to 2010. You can go back in history and figure out which teams have shown up in which era. There hasn’t been a team in this era, in the 2020s. The lifestyle you have in Arizona, if we can create some staff consistency, and then we’re in a league where we can continually compete to win.” Dillingham adds: “Our method is we don’t recruit or acquire talent. We retain talent. We’re a talent retention organization, not a talent acquisition organization.” (link)

On Friday, Boise State held a ceremony to place the final beam atop an elevator shaft in the north end zone project at Albertsons Stadium, which is expected to be finished in time for the 2026 season. The approximately $65M project will add up to 1,600 seats and feature 12 field-level suites, 44 loge boxes (all of which are sold out ), 148 ledge seats and 882 club seats. Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey notes that changes on the east side are next on the docket. (link)

Athletics Admin consultant KC Smurthwaite’s latest offering for Hero Sports examines the process USC Upstate used to refresh its brand and logo and notes: “A central driver of the rebrand was the need for a Spartan symbol that stood out in a crowded collegiate landscape. The former Spartan head logo, particularly when depicted on green, was often confused with those of other universities—most notably Michigan State.” Smurthwaite explains that “through focus group discussions and design iterations with Zilligen Design Studio, the university identified key themes to guide the new mark: strength, leadership, pride, and a deeper connection to South Carolina. The result is a crafted emblem packed with symbolic meaning. The helmet’s profile mirrors the outline of the state of South Carolina, integrating the university’s regional identity directly into the facial structure. The white fastener on the helmet doubles as the iconic crescent moon from the South Carolina state flag, positioned in the same upper-left quadrant where Spartanburg is located on the map.” Spartans Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Lenny Mathis: “Overall, we wanted South Carolina to be part of the DNA of the logo, both from a state standpoint and the flag—both are represented well. We often got questions like ‘Who is Upstate?’ or ‘Where is Upstate?’ This new mark helps tell that story.” (link)

The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode examines the “Quarterback Dad” phenomenon and notes that Jay Underwood, “the father of Michigan super freshman Bryce Underwood, is one of the good ones. There are good ones despite the constant barrage of headlines about Quarterback Dads gone wild — Carl Williams (Caleb’s dad) torching his son’s employer publicly, Nic Iamaleava (Nico’s dad) bungling a good situation at Tennessee, Deion Sanders (Shedeur’s dad) doing whatever he did to contribute to a fringe NFL first-round talent going in the fifth round, and so on.” However, Quarterback University Founder Donovan Dooley, who has worked with the Underwoods for years, noted in the book Quarterback Dads: Wild Tales from the Field, which he co-wrote with Teddy Greenstein, that Jay had previously been “the classic Quarterback Dad, in every maddening sense.” Rexrode explains that it “all changed when Jay, with Dooley’s help, realized how strained his relationship with his son was getting. To save it, he needed to revert to being just a dad and take the pressure off his son.” Dooley: “Total turnaround. Now, Jay stays in the background a lot. Hell, I don’t even know if some of the staff at Michigan know him. It’s usually not that way when your son is a prime guy like this, but he sits back and lets Bryce do his thing.” Dooley explains the book came out in the early days of NIL and the transfer portal, which “heightened the anxiety around everything.” Dooley has since become a source for coaches seeking information about Quarterback Dads, and he tells Rexrode: “I’m never going to say anything too negative. My code word is, ‘Yeah, that dad is wired a little different.’ That’s my polite way of saying, ‘S—, be ready for everything you don’t want.’” Lots more, including the different types of QB Dads, as outlined in the book. ESPN SVP of Production Meg Aronowitz Director of Programming & Acquisitions Mallory Kenny and VP of Production Technology and Innovation Phil Orlins discuss how coverage of baseball and softball has evolved in their time at ESPN and what they are most looking forward to at this year’s Women’s and Men’s College World Series. Aronowitz describes how the on-site coverage has changed: “My first year overseeing softball we had one truck up on the side of a hill that leaned and there was a crew of maybe 20 people. We were tape delayed for the early round games. There was a time with college baseball where we did the entirety of Omaha and handed off the finals to CBS. Think of the volume of what we have in the regular season, plus every pitch of the postseason, which all leads up to the showcase that we put on in both Oklahoma City and Omaha. It’s an event that not everybody can do.” This is Aronowitz’s first baseball season, and she says: “It’s probably the thing I’m proudest of in my career – to help cultivate the growth of [softball] and I hope to continue to do that with the team on college baseball as well.” On executing the broadcasts themselves, Kenny notes that both “are huge puzzles beginning with our regional coverage. It’s a programmer’s dream to get to place those pieces and I’m excited to see how it plays out as the tournament continues. During regional rounds, our 7 Innings Live and Squeeze Play coverage is unmatched, and having a consistent home for both postseason tournaments in Oklahoma City and Omaha really adds to the specialness.” Lots more. @1QLeadership Question: What role does leadership play in shaping feelings of inclusion (or exclusion) among Black women in college athletics administration?
Dr. Jennifer Jacobs, Head Volleyball Coach at Augustana University, discusses her dissertation research outcomes after interviewing multiple Black women from all divisions of college athletics. One of the key findings is that the default for leadership is to be exclusionary.
+ There were no inclusionary moments that didn't have direct involvement with supervisors
+ Inclusive leadership is an active and intentional process
Dr. Jacobs also talked about her fundraising process at Augustana, which supports 75% of her annual budget for the volleyball program. She has raised roughly $1 million over the past few years.

NJ Advance Media’s Steve Politi writes on the Rutgers AD search, which per sources is nearing the finish line and “focused on non-traditional candidates.” New Scarlet Knights President William Tate “is expected to begin meeting with candidates next week — might steer it in another direction as he takes a bigger role in the process. But (sources) believe the hire is more likely to come from the sports business world than another athletic department.” More: “Tate did not hire an athletic director during his four-year tenure at LSU, inheriting Scott Woodward, but he was involved in the process to bring football coach Brian Kelly to Baton Rouge from Notre Dame. Rutgers went months without an AD to ensure that the new president [had] a role in making this important decision — and now, it appears, that moment has arrived.” (link)

CollegeAD has more big chair updates as it reports Arkansas State hosted four finalists this week for in person interviews in Little Rock. The makeup of the quartet is described as “one sitting AD, a pair of senior staffers, as well as an industry veteran with AD experience.” Meanwhile, Hawaii did the same by hosting four candidates on Oahu with “AD and senior staff experience.” (link)

New SMU AD Damon Evans wants football’s Ford Stadium to “feel like the Four Seasons or the Ritz.” Evans: “This is a stadium and an environment in which we have a lot of people who like premium type seating. So when you ask me, do I have plans? Am I exploring other options for the future? Absolutely. I think we’ve got to make sure that we keep our finger on the pulse of what our fans want, what the expectations are, and that we meet those needs and those demands. That’s what we plan on doing. [...] I’m looking at what do we do with the other side of the stadium? Is there room for more suites and more clubs? I think premium seating is the route to go. That’s something I am exploring right now at this time. I am looking at that and looking at doing a study of that to see what would be right for that side of the stadium. I do believe that that’s something that we’ll bring to fruition in the coming years. [...] I want to be up here (gestures high). Some people, they’re okay with being here (gestures lower). I wanna be at a high level. I wanna be luxurious. That’s who we are. We’re SMU. We’re in Highland Park, University Park.” (link)

Freshly minted BYU AD Brian Santiago pens a letter to fans which reads, in part: “We find ourselves in truly unprecedented times in collegiate athletics. With the rise of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and revenue sharing, the landscape is shifting rapidly. Thanks to the generosity of Cougar Nation, the leadership and governance of the Church and the tireless efforts of the dedicated, talented individuals in our athletics department, we are in a position of real strength. We will continue to focus on recruiting excellent student-athletes who come to BYU because of the unique, holistic experience that helps them grow academically, spiritually, professionally and athletically. We must stay competitive in the NIL/revenue share space, and we will do so while being fully aligned with our values, not being the highest bidder. For those who embrace our mission and values, there’s no better place than BYU to develop, compete and prepare for a bright future. … Our athletics administration and support staff will provide unwavering support to our athletic programs in alignment with BYU’s mission, creating an environment where student-athletes can thrive spiritually, academically and competitively. We will continue to deliver an exceptional fan experience for both Cougar Nation and visiting fans, while providing best-in-class content creation, social media, communications and broadcasting. We ask Cougar fans to continue to support BYU with enthusiasm and respect, to represent the mission and values of BYU in every venue, both home and away, and to exemplify the spirit of the Y.” Full letter. Washington Post columnist/What’s Up with College Sports? publisher Jesse Dougherty takes a look at how Maryland AD Jim Smith’s previous experience will prepare him for his new role and is told by a source that with the Atlanta Braves, “Smith had his hand in ‘just about everything with how the business functioned day-to-day,’ as one person put it to me. More specifically, he oversaw retail, which the Braves run in-house instead of outsourcing it to Fanatics (like every other MLB team). He was in charge of the master strategy for ticket sales, which included a ton of premium seating at Truist Park. … One person told me the Braves can’t build enough ‘premium, long-term seating,’ the demand is always there. They pointed out that, if Maryland’s football bowl is mostly filled with opposing fans, finding creative ways to change that will likely be at the top of Smith’s to-do list. He’s a concessions guy, too. He thinks a lot about the experience. Bigger picture, away from the day-to-day, Smith also led the Braves in negotiations for their latest media rights deal. This scores him a few more creativity points.” How does this translate to UMD? Dougherty notes that “after declining to offer specific plans at that first press conference, Smith is now taking a crash course in campus politics, learning what he can do immediately and what might take more time. A look at his MLB résumé is at least a small window into what he likely highlighted in his interviews for the job. College sports, after all, are big, big business, making the Smith hire feel like a sign of what might come with similar openings at similar schools. And as it was with the Braves, the results will be out in the open, poked and prodded, held up as an arbiter of whether an unconventional decision worked.” (link)

South Carolina Women’s Basketball HC Dawn Staley believes that the sport is “at our most popular state,” and as such, should cash in. Staley: “We should get more money from ESPN. We're in a television deal. When we signed the deal three or four years ago, we weren't where we are today. Let's go back to the table and let's talk about where we are today. Let's negotiate in good faith. … I want ESPN to step up to the plate. Give us a little bit more from collegiately to the WNBA.” (link)

With the Road to Omaha starting yesterday, The Athletic’s Ralph Russo examines the offensive extremes of college baseball from the last 30 years, which he describes as bouncing between “gorilla ball to the dead ball and back to a bombs-away mentality. The latest swing in the state of play has produced an unprecedented four-year run of power hitting. Unlike some of the other recent fluctuations, the latest uptick in offense has those in the game less worried about the balls and the bats and more focused on the guys using the equipment and how.” Russo deep dives into the history of ball and bat modifications, homers per team per Power 5 league dating back to 2021 and gets a bevy of comments from current coaches on what they think of the current state of the game. Arkansas HC Dave Van Horn notes teams are a lot bigger, stronger and older than they used to be, as well. Clemson HC Eric Bakich: “College baseball is the best farm system for Major League Baseball. The tippy-top of college baseball usually has a Double-A or Triple-A facility and is giving these kids the big-league treatment in terms of travel, accommodations, food, et cetera. So these kids, they go to summer ball, it’s a letdown. They go to Single-A and it’s a letdown.” Lots more. (link)

Following Georgia Football HC Kirby Smart’s remarks this week that some top recruits are being paid to guarantee their commitments, two Power 4 GMs tell On3’s Pete Nakos they believe the number of recruits receiving upfront payments sits between 50 to 100 prospects in the 2026 cycle. While the process of paying recruits is not new, the amount of dollars being allocated, Nakos notes, has “significantly spiked” in the last year. One P4 GM says: “I think it’s right around $20K as far as the highest paid. Because you’ve got to think, if it’s a kid committed in March, you’re paying them for nine months, $20K times nine is $180K. I’ve heard of guys making $25K a month.” While several individuals Nakos has spoken with have their own take on who initiated the process, another P4 GM remarks: “It doesn’t matter who did it first. It doesn’t matter who did it after. It’s the world we live in right now. Everything that’s being said has always happened; it’s not some new thing. The numbers might be growing. Everyone’s talking about this third-party Deloitte regulation. Well, they’re not going to regulate high school. The money’s just going to trickle down, just like it already has. People are finding ways to pay kids on the front end right now.” Another source compares the practice to signing bonuses in the workforce: “When they started doing it, you’re getting your ass kicked. And you kind of look around and say, ‘Okay, are you going to get this kid?’ If all else is even, but he gets $100K right now, where the f**k is he going to go?” An SEC collective tells Nakos: “An ACC school told me that they’re doing it, but they’re not making it contingent upon enrollment. And so I said, ‘Well, that didn’t make any sense. Why would you not make it contingent upon enrollment?’ They’re saying that would be against the rules if they did it that way. There are a fair number of schools that are making it contingent, and they’re probably leaning on their state law. We’re such a long way from signing day.” (link)

More from On3’s Nakos on the recruiting front, as he catches up with several stakeholders to find out what’s being asked and offered during the official visit season. One collective tells him: “We’re involved with multiple quarterbacks. And I’m not a talent evaluator, but the one who I think is the least talented just sent over a demand list. It’s not even worth entertaining. It’s $1.5M in Year 1. And this kid needs two years before he can even play. It’s travel to games, it’s travel back home and then back to campus. The asks are crazier than ever, and I don’t know how to make good on them.” Another collective going after multiple high four-star recruits in June says that among the asks, the recruits are expecting monthly stipends upon commitments baked into multi-year deals, money for a car lease and housing stipends on top of what the school is paying. The source suggests: “They need to do a mid-summer National Signing Day. Get a commitment and expedite the process. There is too much waiting and seeing. If I am going to spend $20K on a kid, what if he flips in October? It’s a clown show.” Meanwhile, a Big Ten source “stressed to On3 that their school is done trying to provide amenities, such as private travel to games or keys to a luxury vehicle. They are expecting some tough conversations in the month of June.” The source: “We are paying you hundreds of thousands of dollars. Do what you want with it, we’re not adding in more.” An SEC source takes a similar position: “We will not be paying recruits crazy numbers until they start playing. We would personally rather go to the portal and get someone who has a season under their belt and pay them. Developing guys is gonna be hard to do if they want big money.” (link)

The combined total of Princeton-to-Florida men’s basketball student-athlete Xaivian Lee’s contract with the Gators and his new brand partnership with Serious Player Only amounts to more than $6M, according to On3’s Pete Nakos, who explains: “Sources said the new, multi-year sneaker deal with Serious Player Only is the more lucrative of the two, and he will have the opportunity to launch a shoe when he goes to the NBA. … The agreement includes a future signature shoe, immediate signature colorway releases, full creative freedom in collaborative product design, and a long-term strategy to amplify Xaivian’s influence across Asia and North America. Attorney Darren Heitner provided legal counsel on the deal.” (link)
