Georgia Tech AD J Batt has agreed to a six-year deal to take over in the same role at Michigan State, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, and The Detroit News’ Tony Paul cites a source who says Batt will earn $1.5M annually. The Spartans, per Paul, will also owe the Yellow Jackets a $1M buyout. (link, link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “more info is being socialized with other conferences about the discussions Thursday from SEC ADs & presidents. The league is indicating that it is *not* supporting a multi-AQ format (4-4-2-2-1), preferring instead more at-large bids + a selection committee criteria change. Though the league showed support for a multi-AQ format in CFP meetings with fellow commissioners, the pushback from a variety of groups – including its own coaches + CFP data provided by the conference – has moved university administrators toward a different approach. Leaders from two of the SEC’s biggest brands – Georgia & Alabama – were influential during conversations this week over a pivot from a format that potentially limited the league to four playoff spots & required an additional ‘play-in’ game. … The 5+11 format…is in no way a guarantee for approval as the Big Ten may not support such a model if the SEC remains at 8 conference games. The two parallel discussions – CFP format + SEC 8 or 9 games – are expected to continue the next few weeks.” Meanwhile, Dellenger notes it “seems doubtful” the SEC would move to nine games without an overhaul of the selection committee’s criteria. Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts: “If we’re not confident that the decision-making about who gets in and why, and the metrics around it, it’s going to be hard for my colleagues to get to nine games.” (link, link)

ESPN’s Bill Connelly attempts to answer how much more difficult a nine-game SEC football schedule would be by creating “four years' worth of nine-game SEC schedules based around the super-clean, super-easy idea of permanent conference rivalries.” The results: “For the league's elite teams, moving to nine games won't make much of a difference. For instance, with Georgia's current schedule, SP+ projects it to win 9.8 games on average, with an 84.9% chance of going at least 9-3 (the hypothetical cutoff line for SEC teams hoping to get into the field). But with an abridged, three-game nonconference schedule -- for the most part, I shrank nonconference schedules by getting rid of teams' second games against Group of 5 teams and leaving one game against a power-conference opponent, one against a G5 team and one against an FCS team – Georgia averages 9.7 wins over four simulated seasons, with a 79.6% chance of reaching 9-3 or better on average. … For the league's light heavyweights, however, things get trickier. Florida has a 43.7% chance of finishing 9-3 or better in 2025, but in a nine-SEC-games universe, that drops to 19.6%. Four others see their odds drop by at least 10%, and current long shots like Vanderbilt (10.2% chance of going 9-3 in 2025) see their odds almost completely vanish (0.1%). Overall, an average of 6.2 SEC teams are projected to go 9-3 or better in 2025. In a nine-game universe, that average shrinks to 4.7. With a 16-team field, you could say that the league would go from expecting around six teams in the field to having four or five teams safely in and campaigning for some 8-4 teams. Meanwhile, the league would also go from an average of 13.4 bowl-eligible teams to just 11.4.” More data. (link)

Puck’s John Ourand breaks down the issue with expanding March Madness after NCAA President Charlie Baker last week revealed talks were underway with CBS and TNT: “Any expansion would situate more games on the opening two days of the tournament – the first Tuesday and Wednesday – when CBS or TNT Sports are already carrying the play-in games. A significant increase in rights fees based on a handful of early-round games is fanciful, too: CBS and TNT Sports, which hold tournament rights through 2032, are not contractually obligated to increase their rights fee if the tournament expands. But…CBS and TNT Sports could agree to pay a higher fee if the NCAA modifies the way that they sell corporate sponsorships around the tournament, among other possible sweeteners. We’re still in the experimental, market-testing phase. This should all shake out in the next few months.” (link)

FIU AD Scott Carr joins the Inside College Athletics podcast to discuss how he’s always been a three-to-five-year strategic thinker,” but NIL has forced him to become “comfortable being uncomfortable. I’m a four-to-six-month thinker. We need to make a decision today. We’ve got to do this because we need to retain talent, we’ve got to recruit talent, whatever it may be so we need to do this today and I’ll figure out some of the implications of that four to six months from now. A lot of that’s financial. If you’re going to come up with some money for NIL that probably means you don’t have money for something else. That something else is a problem six months from now I’m going to figure that out over the next six months.” As an example of this pivot in mindset, Carr points out that he put a facility master plan “on the shelf. About 14 months ago I said, ‘There's a draft. We’re going to put it on the shelf because right now we need rosters before we need new facilities. And that’s a challenge because we need new facilities here. We need some renovations done and we’re going to still have to work on those. But if somebody comes up and says here’s a dollar, that dollar is going to NIL right now.” (link)

Sportico’s Daniel Libit observes that Deloitte has for years “maintained an extensive presence in both the athletics and higher education sectors; however, the prospect of one arm of the firm specifically advising athletic departments on NIL issues while another plays a role in evaluating or adjudicating athlete NIL deals at those same schools raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest.” A company spokesperson tells Libit that “Deloitte maintains a robust governance process and thoroughly vets all projects across a number of dimensions including potential conflicts. Regarding this project, the new entity that will be stood up by the defendant conferences’ settlement implementation committee (pending the final approval for the settlement), [which] will be responsible for the enforcement of its terms, including all decision-making pertaining to third-party NIL deals.” An official with one of the conferences tells Libit there will be “bright lines” separating the firm’s consulting work from its clearinghouse duties and those boundaries that will be clearly defined in Deloitte’s contract with the College Sports Commission. More, including news that Texas A&M previously engaged Deloitte for consulting work to the tune of $99K, as did East Carolina for $50K. (link)

Texas Men’s Basketball HC Sean Miller says the latest figures from the transfer portal essentially show "25% of the pie missing" in terms of quality veteran players because of the reduction of players with a COVID year left. "One thing that's definitely going to change, and I don't think it's talked a lot about in basketball, is the no COVID year. In our case, we had a number of players in my three years at Xavier that were exercising their fifth year. It's a year that doesn't exist right now." Miller believes that lack of supply will probably end up hurting the power conferences with the most to spend. "I think just that alone, taking that one layer of talent, where you can convince an All-SEC player to return for a fifth year, and now that that's not in play, I don't think our league will remain as old. So I think just with that alone, I don't know if 14 of 16 [bids], I hope, but I can certainly see the effect of that moving forward.” Florida HC Todd Golden takes a similar position, telling ESPN’s Pete Thamel: "I think the league will be very good again this coming year, I do. The teams have recruited well, and we're the premier basketball conference right now. I think it's pretty clear. So will it be as elite as it was this past year? I'm not sure…but I do think we have a chance to have another great year." (link)

UTSA reported $1.73M in total baseball operating expenses for FY24, according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who notes Texas, the team the Roadrunners beat twice en route to winning the Austin region, reported $6.35M, excluding an additional $5.2M paid out in coaching severance payments. Libit looks deeper and points out that “the disparity was stark across nearly every category. UTSA paid head coach Pat Hallmark $272,296, while assistants Ryan Aguayo and Zach Butler earned a combined $240,741. (The program added a third assistant, Michael Cavazos, last August.) Texas spent $1.8M on its former head coach David Pierce and another $1.22M on three full-time assistants. After firing Pierce last June, the Longhorns hired former Texas A&M coach Jim Schlossnagle, who reportedly earns $1M this season with a contract that rises to $2.68M by 2026–27. Recruiting budgets also underscored the resource gap: UTSA spent $28,001, while Texas allocated $147,739. UTSA reported $96,202 in equipment and uniform expenses—less than a third of Texas’s $317,227. Unlike Texas, UTSA had no support staff expenditures, because it had no support staff. That changed in October with the hiring of Luke Malone as director of player development and analytics. … The Roadrunners have already made a compelling case for at least one thing next season: a bigger budget. Then again, that would kind of defeat their point.” (link)

Florida Baseball HC Kevin O’Sullivan “was very upset with the schedule change for yesterday’s matchup against ECU, according to WNCT’s Brian Bailey, who reports: “He ripped into the NCAA staff here in Conway. He also reportedly had things to say to the Pirates as they crossed the field this morning.” (link); Meanwhile, Coastal Carolina Baseball HC Kevin Schnall had this to say: “I don’t know if I’m supposed to say this or not, but I believe in standing up for what’s right. And what transpired this morning on our field – another coach disrespected our associate AD, who works as hard as anybody in our entire program. He disrespected our field crew, who are the salt of the earth. These guys would do anything for our program. It’s not okay, and this needs to be brought up. Absolutely disrespectful. As a coach, it's our job to mentor young kids and the way he treated the two site reps, the way he treated our associate AD, the way he treated our field crew is absolutely unacceptable. That’s what I'm most disappointed about. He’s a national champion coach who thinks he can come in here and try to bully people around. Disappointed. Disappointed somebody that a lot of coaches look up to – for him to act that way, really disappointed. He disrespected a hall of fame coach who’s the site rep here.” (link)

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler reports San Diego State, Boise State, Utah State, Fresno State & Colorado State all officially notified the Mountain West of their intention to exit the league ahead of today’s deadline when exit fees doubled from $18M to $36M. Aztecs AD John David Wicker at a donor event last week: “I’m very pleased where we are from a Pac-12 standpoint. Obviously, we have to add another team. That will happen. I have a good idea of what our TV is going to look like with the Pac-12. Right now, we’re trying to wrap up various items around that. But we have a really good idea of what that will be, and we’re pleased with what that is going to be. It feels like the next four or five weeks, there’s a lot that’s going to happen that’s going to help dictate what we’re doing moving forward.” (link)

WSAZ Sports Director Keith Morehouse joins D1.ticker's Kristen Eargle to provide an inside look at Marshall's AD search and cites creativity in revenue generation as a key quality the committee should prioritize. Morehouse also identifies the biggest challenges facing the Herd, describes the relationship between the athletic department and main campus, how Marshall can differentiate itself within the Sun Belt and more. Morehouse heard directly from President Brad Smith about what the university is looking for in its next AD and says: “Specifically they’re looking for ‘one who possesses a strong business acumen, one who is innovative trailblazer, one who is skilled as a facilitative leader, strategic thinking, driving for results, building high-performance teams, innovating for impact and inspiring through action.’ Now a lot of that sounds like a lot of big words on a form, but I do think you do have to be creative in this day and time in athletics to fundraise and turn that money around and keep your programs not only afloat, but going well.” Morehouse notes it’s important than when “Marshall does hire its next athletic director, you’ve got to find somebody that wants to be at your school. Obviously there's movement, upwards movement in athletics, and a lot of people have desires to go up, but it's certainly something the committee will look at to try to make sure somebody wants to be in Huntington, West Virginia, with Marshall in the Sun Belt.” Full Q&A. For those looking for the edge in the interview process, the D1.dossier for the AD opening at Marshall is available. Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller: “The D1.dossier was extremely helpful for the interview process by identifying the key stakeholders and providing the current landscape at Coastal Carolina. It saved me a tremendous amount of time from having to research and gather it myself. I appreciate the service and highly recommend it to my counterparts around the country.” (link)

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman joins Collegiate Sports Associates Founder Todd Turner on the latest episode of The Journey to discuss her career path, including the lessons she learned from former NBA Commissioner David Stern, as well as the changing dynamics of college athletics and the need to ensure academics remains a core piece of the equation. On the latter point, Ackerman explains that “where I think we have to get to, Todd, is some place where academics remain critical and the athletes are not just hired guns, but they’re students who are in good academic standing at their schools in pursuit of a degree. If we lose that, then ‘college sports’ is over. It’s something else. It’s not college sports. So I hope we can hold onto that.” Ackerman also emphasizes the need to hold onto March Madness “more or less in its current form. That may be down the list of things to worry about, but that’s one of the greatest events in sports as far as I’m concerned. … So, holding onto that and the magic of that and the Cinderella components of that I think is critically important.” Furthermore, Ackerman believes “we need a system where the NCAA has the ability to make some rules. It’s a national enterprise. It runs national competitions. Schools from around the country compete against each other, and we need some uniformity in the operation of that enterprise. And right now everything under the sun is prone to a legal challenge, and it’s no way to run a railroad. So we need some protection there and some protection in general against all these legal challenges.” Check out the full conversation on Collegiate Sports Connect. (link)

Iowa State AD Jamie Pollard with an update on the videoboard updates inside Jack Trice Stadium: “I saw the one on the south plane today from my office and it’s as clear as my television at home. It’s like anything, technology changes and so it was time to update the boards and we’ll all benefit from the technology because the pixels will be that much tighter and it’ll be a better picture on both ends of the stadium for fan experience.” As for the hire of a new university President in Ames: “Athletics is a big part of the university and the world we’re working in today makes that even more of an issue. So, whoever gets hired is going to have to be versed, or understand or quickly be brought up to speed on the landscape going forward.” (link)

South Carolina will retain Baseball HC Paul Mainieri and Gamecocks AD Jeremiah Donati explains the choice: “The decision was this. At this level, you don’t hire coaches on one-time tryouts. You make a commitment to the coach. You invest in the coach. And you’ve got to give them a little runway to prove that they can lead the program. Sometimes when you’re transitioning, there’s a lot of things that need to be changed within the program — whether it’s from the culture or the personnel. And so those just take time. … Obviously it was a disappointing season and we, as a program, expect more. We will get better. And it’s not one thing, it’s a lot of things. We need to coach better, we need to play better, we need to recruit better as a program. And so we’re committed to doing those things. We’ve got plans to do those things and have already started working through those plans. (link)

Arizona State Football HC Kenny Dillingham tells On3’s Pete Nakos that he has no plans of leaving because he envisions the Sun Devils becoming the blue blood of the 2020s: “You can build something very, very unique. Every 10 years, a team shows up on the map, and they’re a blue blood to the next generation. They’re not a blue blood to the people my age, but they’re a blue blood to the 10-year-olds, the 11-year-olds and the 12-year-olds who you’re eventually going to recruit. You have Clemson this last cycle, from 2010 to 2020. They just showed up. People think they’ve been around forever. You have Oregon from 2000 to 2010. You can go back in history and figure out which teams have shown up in which era. There hasn’t been a team in this era, in the 2020s. The lifestyle you have in Arizona, if we can create some staff consistency, and then we’re in a league where we can continually compete to win.” Dillingham adds: “Our method is we don’t recruit or acquire talent. We retain talent. We’re a talent retention organization, not a talent acquisition organization.” (link)

On Friday, Boise State held a ceremony to place the final beam atop an elevator shaft in the north end zone project at Albertsons Stadium, which is expected to be finished in time for the 2026 season. The approximately $65M project will add up to 1,600 seats and feature 12 field-level suites, 44 loge boxes (all of which are sold out ), 148 ledge seats and 882 club seats. Broncos AD Jeramiah Dickey notes that changes on the east side are next on the docket. (link)

Athletics Admin consultant KC Smurthwaite’s latest offering for Hero Sports examines the process USC Upstate used to refresh its brand and logo and notes: “A central driver of the rebrand was the need for a Spartan symbol that stood out in a crowded collegiate landscape. The former Spartan head logo, particularly when depicted on green, was often confused with those of other universities—most notably Michigan State.” Smurthwaite explains that “through focus group discussions and design iterations with Zilligen Design Studio, the university identified key themes to guide the new mark: strength, leadership, pride, and a deeper connection to South Carolina. The result is a crafted emblem packed with symbolic meaning. The helmet’s profile mirrors the outline of the state of South Carolina, integrating the university’s regional identity directly into the facial structure. The white fastener on the helmet doubles as the iconic crescent moon from the South Carolina state flag, positioned in the same upper-left quadrant where Spartanburg is located on the map.” Spartans Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Lenny Mathis: “Overall, we wanted South Carolina to be part of the DNA of the logo, both from a state standpoint and the flag—both are represented well. We often got questions like ‘Who is Upstate?’ or ‘Where is Upstate?’ This new mark helps tell that story.” (link)

The Athletic’s Joe Rexrode examines the “Quarterback Dad” phenomenon and notes that Jay Underwood, “the father of Michigan super freshman Bryce Underwood, is one of the good ones. There are good ones despite the constant barrage of headlines about Quarterback Dads gone wild — Carl Williams (Caleb’s dad) torching his son’s employer publicly, Nic Iamaleava (Nico’s dad) bungling a good situation at Tennessee, Deion Sanders (Shedeur’s dad) doing whatever he did to contribute to a fringe NFL first-round talent going in the fifth round, and so on.” However, Quarterback University Founder Donovan Dooley, who has worked with the Underwoods for years, noted in the book Quarterback Dads: Wild Tales from the Field, which he co-wrote with Teddy Greenstein, that Jay had previously been “the classic Quarterback Dad, in every maddening sense.” Rexrode explains that it “all changed when Jay, with Dooley’s help, realized how strained his relationship with his son was getting. To save it, he needed to revert to being just a dad and take the pressure off his son.” Dooley: “Total turnaround. Now, Jay stays in the background a lot. Hell, I don’t even know if some of the staff at Michigan know him. It’s usually not that way when your son is a prime guy like this, but he sits back and lets Bryce do his thing.” Dooley explains the book came out in the early days of NIL and the transfer portal, which “heightened the anxiety around everything.” Dooley has since become a source for coaches seeking information about Quarterback Dads, and he tells Rexrode: “I’m never going to say anything too negative. My code word is, ‘Yeah, that dad is wired a little different.’ That’s my polite way of saying, ‘S—, be ready for everything you don’t want.’” Lots more, including the different types of QB Dads, as outlined in the book. ESPN SVP of Production Meg Aronowitz Director of Programming & Acquisitions Mallory Kenny and VP of Production Technology and Innovation Phil Orlins discuss how coverage of baseball and softball has evolved in their time at ESPN and what they are most looking forward to at this year’s Women’s and Men’s College World Series. Aronowitz describes how the on-site coverage has changed: “My first year overseeing softball we had one truck up on the side of a hill that leaned and there was a crew of maybe 20 people. We were tape delayed for the early round games. There was a time with college baseball where we did the entirety of Omaha and handed off the finals to CBS. Think of the volume of what we have in the regular season, plus every pitch of the postseason, which all leads up to the showcase that we put on in both Oklahoma City and Omaha. It’s an event that not everybody can do.” This is Aronowitz’s first baseball season, and she says: “It’s probably the thing I’m proudest of in my career – to help cultivate the growth of [softball] and I hope to continue to do that with the team on college baseball as well.” On executing the broadcasts themselves, Kenny notes that both “are huge puzzles beginning with our regional coverage. It’s a programmer’s dream to get to place those pieces and I’m excited to see how it plays out as the tournament continues. During regional rounds, our 7 Innings Live and Squeeze Play coverage is unmatched, and having a consistent home for both postseason tournaments in Oklahoma City and Omaha really adds to the specialness.” Lots more.
