Sources have indicated to MWC Connection’s Mike Wittmann the “Hawaii AD search should be wrapped up by early next week, if not sooner. Finalists were in person this week and were interviewed by the Governor, Mayor and other political leaders.” (link)

Southland Commissioner Chris Grant talks about the move to a nine-game football slate and explains that he expects the extension to a 12-game FCS schedule each year will be finalized “and that is good for our programs. It is another game for us to get revenue, and it has been hard for some of our teams to get games.” Therefore, adding another league game “keeps our regional rivalries going. This is a big thing for our schools. We hope it could help lead to getting two or three teams back in the postseason. Our schools have upgraded their schedules, but we haven’t seen the advantages of that yet.” McNeese State AD Heath Schroyer adds: “We were all in agreement about it. I think this is a great move by our league as we look to the future. Moving forward, it will be a lot easier for scheduling for all of us and will give us more shared revenue.” (link)

Toledo AD Bryan Blair talks more about hosting the Zac Brown Band at the Glass Bowl last month, telling SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “All of us in college athletics are looking for new revenue streams. We’re a campus that wants to get more people onto our campus to see how gorgeous it is. And when you’ve got a massive football stadium, but you only use it for six home games and a couple of ancillary events, you’re trying to figure out, ‘OK, we’re putting a lot of money for the facility, how do we use it more often?’ … All the positives [of a concert] – certainly for that money and revenue and exposure – but it amplifies your sponsorships. It amplifies your suite and premium sales. It gets more people onto your campus, but it also gets people thinking about your venue in a different way.” Blair, who estimates the school will bring in six figures from the show, goes on to tell Portnoy: “We’ve hosted a lot of concerts in our basketball arena, but never really done it in the football venue in the last 30-plus years. This was awakening that beast and saying, ‘OK, here’s what it looked like.’ In the future, we started talking for next year the possibility of a two-day event. You can mix up genres and music. You get different types of audiences for both, but your costs are sunk into the staging, the parking lot rentals and the floor covering for the turf. Once that cost is sunk, the next artist, you’re not incurring that cost any more than you did the first show. There’s a unique upside when you do a two-day event versus a one-day that I’m excited to explore.” (link)

James Madison AD Matt Roan and Football HC Bob Chesney weigh in on the role agents continue to play in college sports, and Chesney observes: “It seems like everybody has an agent now. Everybody has numbers that they're being told, whether they're true or not, whether those things actually come to fruition for them or not. … It almost seems like it's a fantasy world that we're living in at times. The percentage that they're taking away from these kids on top of it, it's really a shame. That's got to get fixed.” Chesney takes particular exception with the agents shopping players around without the players’ knowledge: “I think that's where those things got to get cleaned up just a little bit more. I try to have as little [to do] as I can with the agents, and I try to have as much [to do] as I can with that particular player. If we hit a sticking point with an agent, I'll make sure that I have a good conversation with that player.” Roan agrees with Chesney that a certification process for agents would be beneficial and says: “I think that, again, just that more regulation in that agency space, not because it necessarily makes it easier for us. I think my motivation would be, and I think Coach Chesney would agree, that regulation, hopefully, is serving the best interests of those student-athletes that those agents are actually purporting to represent.” (link)

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a statement of interest in Tennessee men’s basketball standout Zakai Zeigler's lawsuit against the NCAA, and Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich notes the DOJ is calling on the court to use "flexible" antitrust analysis that considers the "student" in "student-athlete.” Ehrlich notes the following passage “might as well have been written by NCAA counsel.” From the filing: “The ringers of the 19th century college teams underscore why some degree of collaboration between schools is necessary to maintain the connection between scholarship and athletics. If an opposing school does not impose academic obligations on its players, it stands to gain a significant advantage on the field from a team of effectively professional athletes able to devote all of their time and energy solely to athletics. Likewise, if a school does not limit the years of participation, it could field more experienced players and obtain advantages over rivals, which would discourage other teams from fielding younger players. The on-field rivalry therefore makes it difficult for any one school to impose academic requirements unilaterally without some assurance that competing teams have similar rules. Thus, from the early days of the NCAA, it has imposed a significant amount of ‘regulatory controls’ as a ‘justifiable means of fostering competition among amateur athletic teams.’” (link); Full brief. At least 15 former Indiana men's basketball student-athletes are alleging improper sexual conduct by a former team physician and saying Indiana officials, including former HC Bobby Knight, were aware of the behavior, according to ESPN’s Paula Lavigne, who adds: “Since two former Hoosiers sued the university last fall, five ex-athletes are now named in the lawsuit, and 10 additional men are also planning to pursue litigation against Indiana, their attorney, Michelle Simpson Tuegel, told ESPN. Even though their legal path grew more difficult with the death of Dr. Bradford Bomba last month and the release of an outside investigation that cleared him of sexual misconduct, the men say they are driven to share their stories, in part to protect others from such behavior.” Former student-athlete Haris Mujezinovic, who is one of the two original plaintiffs: "I have two sons who are the same age that I was when that happened to me. At the time I viewed myself as an adult, but now I realize, looking at my own kids, how young and powerless me and my teammates actually were. The adults within the basketball program who were entrusted with our care knew what was happening to us. They joked about it and let it continue." (link)

+ Arizona State Baseball HC Willie Bloomquist will return next season, according to Sun Devil Source’s Chris Karpman, who notes Bloomquist has one year remaining on his deal with a salary of $400K. “It’s unclear whether Bloomquist will get a contract extension but ASU is considering additional staffing, use of analytics, scheduling strategy adjustments, technology and facility improvements and more to accelerate the program in addition to 11.7 to 34 scholarships increase.” Sun Devils AD Graham Rossini on Bloomquist’s return after ASU set a single-season attendance record: “No one should be satisfied with making a Regional. The goal is always bigger and we are now making the investment it takes for Coach Bloomquist to operate the program at a high level. Our coaches will recruit nationally to attract high-end talent to Tempe to play winning baseball at one of the sport’s most decorated programs. It’s important to President Crow, it’s important to me, and should be for everyone associated with our baseball program to be a part of this important next step for Sun Devil Baseball.” (link, link)
+ Wake Forest AD John Currie and Baseball HC Tom Walter have released statements concerning Walter’s behavior during the Demon Deacons’ regional final against Tennessee. Currie: “I am both surprised and deeply disappointed in our head baseball coach Tom Walter for his outburst during last night's baseball game. I feel badly for those most hurt by such words. I spoke with Coach Walter immediately after the game and again this morning to address this incident, which is completely out of character for him and does not meet the standards of Wake Forest Athletics, Wake Forest University or the Atlantic Coast Conference." Walter: “I am very sorry for my outburst in frustration last night and I recognize the hurt and disappointment it has caused. I have seen the videos and while I do not remember the specific moment clearly, that language doesn't reflect my values or the standards of this program. Regardless, I own the consequences and I apologize to the University of Tennessee, to Wake Forest University, and the SEC & ACC." (link)
+ Front Office Sports’ Alex Schiffer takes a look at how Utah Men’s Basketball HC Alex Jensen worked simultaneously as the Utes’ HC and as an AC with the Dallas Mavericks. As for his daily routine, Schiffer explains: “In the morning, he would devote his time to Utah, taking calls for his staff and roster from his house before heading to the Mavericks’ facilities. Then he worked out Dallas players, watched film, scouted opponents, and attended meetings. After that, he would return to making calls for the Utes.” One obstacle for Jensen was learning the rules of college recruiting while keeping up with the transfer portal. He acknowledges the Utes missed out on multiple players due to his situation, but he insists the insight was valuable. “In the NBA, there’s a lot of analytics with production, and in college, it’s just a ton of money. I didn’t want to go after a kid where it’s a bidding war and that’s the reason he comes. You want to sell the kid on that we’re gonna do it the right way, and there was a specific kid we kind of targeted. I didn’t want to be in a rush.” Jensen also enlisted help from those around him in Dallas. For instance, Mavs AC God Shammgod, a New York City native, helped Jensen sign two players from the Bronx in Syracuse transfer Elijah Moore and Iowa’s Seydou Traore. (link)

The Trump administration wants to lower the maximum Pell Grant by $1,685 to $5,710 for the 2026–27 academic year as the program faces an estimated $2.7B shortfall, according to Inside Higher Ed’s Josh Moody and Katherine Knott, who note that, per administration officials, the “lower maximum will cover the average in-state tuition and fees for community college students; however, some students use Pell Grants to attend more expensive four-year institutions. Over the years, advocates for increasing or doubling the Pell Grant have said the maximum award covers less than a third of the costs of four-year colleges and universities.” (link)

College.town Founder & CEO Matt Roberts shares some thoughts on the company’s brand refresh: “While our name is changing, we’re not abandoning the objective. In fact, we’re doubling down on it – tripling, really, if you count the exponential complications of the present moment. Because one thing that hasn’t changed since the spring of 2013 is our True North. We have been guided by one clear mission: to serve decisionmakers in college athletics. That mission will never change. Furthermore, we remain resolute in our belief that college athletics, for all its challenges, remains a national treasure in its capacity as a vehicle for human development: Academic. Athletic. Social. Professional. We’ve witnessed firsthand the way college sports transforms not just lives, but generations. … You’ll still find the ticker. You’ll still find the dossiers. You’ll still find the latest job opportunities. But now you’ll find them in one place. A place with a main street and a sign that reads: Welcome to College.town. We hope you’ll stay a while.” (link)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chad Bishop highlights several potential targets of Georgia Tech’s AD search, including Clemson AD Graham Neff, George Mason AD Marvin Lewis, Yellow Jackets Executive Deputy AD/COO Jon Palumbo, Clemson Deputy AD Kevin White, Georgia State AD Charlie Cobb, Auburn Executive Deputy AD/former Georgia Southern AD Jared Benko, and a wild card: “Tech might look toward a similar area when it targeted Batt in 2022 – an administrator at a Power Four conference school with experience and success in fundraising and NIL initiatives. Ryan Alpert, the deputy athletics director and chief operating officer at Tennessee, would fit that description.” (link)

Northwestern AD Mark Jackson Q&As with The Daily Northwestern student newspaper about his first year on the job, updates to Ryan Field and more. On Ryan Field’s progress, Jackson notes that “no major curveballs as of yet to set us back. It will be a tight window leading into the 2026 season for sure, but we’re really excited. Anybody who’s driven by Central Street with the structural steel up, you can really start to see it take shape. The winter was bearable – it could have been worse – so that allowed us to stay on track. We started our initial sales process and launch, and that’s all been very optimistic. … We’re really trying to think through every element of the design and the fan experience to give us the best chance to win, but also to create that experience that you need to be there. … You’ve seen it happen in basketball at Welsh-Ryan Arena, and we need to build off of that and continue that momentum.” Regarding the temporary seating added to the lakefront’s Martin Stadium, Jackson says nothing has been finalized yet. “There’s certainly a lot of concepts out there. We know the way that it attracted a national media audience. We know there’s something special to showcase sports in that environment. We don’t want to take steps back from that. I think we’re just starting those conversations now. We’re going to keep it up through 2026, and it’ll allow us the opportunity to look at all those opportunities.” Post-House, Jackson says Northwestern is “not going to be built like a traditional athletic department. We’re really going to build it like a C-suite model, and we’ve done some of that already. So we hired a Chief Revenue Officer (Jesse Marks), we hired a Chief Communications and Branding Officer (Savanna Wood), we’ll have a chief operating officer and a chief administrative officer. Those positions are all uniquely designed to help navigate what’s coming at us. In a lot of ways, I’m more like a CEO than I am an athletic director. We can’t lose sight of the academic mission and all that goes into the student-athlete experience. But we’ve done countless models of the what-ifs around the House case.” Full interview. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann unpacks the NCAA’s argument against Tennessee men’s basketball standout Zakai Zeigler as Zeigler seeks an additional year of eligibility. “Among the points raised in the NCAA’s brief is that Zeigler is not an NBA prospect and thus an additional season is unlikely to make him a candidate for the NBA. ‘All publicly available evidence indicates that Plaintiff, respectfully, has a difficult path to the NBA, at this juncture.’” McCann continues: “Zeigler is also depicted as selfish. As the NCAA spins it, Zeigler is asking a court to make him the first college athlete ‘in history’ to obtain a judicial decree to play a fifth season ‘as a matter of right.’ If Zeigler is granted that chance, there would be a loser: a roster spot for a graduating high school senior who would otherwise join the Volunteers would be ‘reapportioned’ to Zeigler. … The NCAA also contends that a core premise of Zeigler’s lawsuit, which argues that removing experienced college players harms the labor market, is erroneous. While Zeigler suggests NIL deals are most lucrative for seniors, the NCAA says ‘non-seniors, on average, have higher NIL valuations than seniors.’ The NCAA’s expert witness, Cal Berkeley economics professor Matthew Backus, provided a declaration referencing that individual NIL valuations for college basketball players shows that non-seniors’ have a higher average NIL valuation than seniors, $1.2M compared to $1.07M.” More analysis. Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes reports North Carolina is providing an unprecedented amount of support to the men’s basketball team. Specifically, “multiple sources have confirmed that UNC has surpassed the $14M mark in its financial commitment to the 2025-26 roster, approximately triple what was spent on the roster a year ago. Men’s basketball executive director and general manager Jim Tanner’s $850K salary represents another bullet point in confirming the university’s support of its prized program.” Barnes goes on to point out that “there are 16 employees in the men’s basketball program, split between [Head Coach Hubert] Davis and his five assistant coaches and 10 support staffers. UNC paid out $4.2M in coach compensation and $1.6M in support staff compensation in 2023-24, according to data from the university’s most recent NCAA financial report. When adding Tanner’s salary to the budget line, UNC has increased its support staff compensation by 150% since NIL legislation took effect in 2021. Total staff compensation for the men’s basketball program will likely exceed $7M in 2025-26. Davis, who signed a two-year contract extension in December that runs through June 2030, will make $3.3M next season with an additional $1.25M in bonuses available.” (link)

The staff member is being represented by attorney Tony Buzbee, whose office indicates in a statement that "the case alleges that on April 30, 2025, Athletic Director Granger invited [the alleged victim] to his office. While there, Granger repeatedly asked [the alleged victim] if she was ‘recording him’ or ‘wearing a wire’ while he proceeded to inappropriately pat her down.
