College.town Founder & CEO Matt Roberts shares some thoughts on the company’s brand refresh: “While our name is changing, we’re not abandoning the objective. In fact, we’re doubling down on it – tripling, really, if you count the exponential complications of the present moment. Because one thing that hasn’t changed since the spring of 2013 is our True North. We have been guided by one clear mission: to serve decisionmakers in college athletics. That mission will never change. Furthermore, we remain resolute in our belief that college athletics, for all its challenges, remains a national treasure in its capacity as a vehicle for human development: Academic. Athletic. Social. Professional. We’ve witnessed firsthand the way college sports transforms not just lives, but generations. … You’ll still find the ticker. You’ll still find the dossiers. You’ll still find the latest job opportunities. But now you’ll find them in one place. A place with a main street and a sign that reads: Welcome to College.town. We hope you’ll stay a while.” (link)

Longtime UC San Diego AD Earl Edwards will transition to a new role as AD Emeritus and continue as Special Adviser to the Chancellor after a quarter-century leading the Tritons. Edwards: “It's been the honor of a lifetime to lead UC San Diego Athletics for the past 25 years. I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished together—our scholar-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters. As I step into my new role, I look forward to continuing to serve our scholar-athletes and coaches by raising the resources necessary to ensure that the next generation of Tritons has everything they need to thrive in our Division I era.” (link)

Howard promotes AD Kery Davis to VP of Athletics. SVP of Student Affairs Cynthia Evers: “Kery has been a phenomenal leader of our athletics department, and we are proud to have him leverage his business acumen and knowledge of the sports and entertainment industry to guide Howard University Athletics to even greater heights. Having built a culture where student-athletes are supported holistically — academically, personally, and professionally, it’s clear his impact goes far beyond the scoreboard. This elevation is a testament to Kery’s vision and the deep respect he has earned from our campus stakeholders.” (link)

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Chad Bishop highlights several potential targets of Georgia Tech’s AD search, including Clemson AD Graham Neff, George Mason AD Marvin Lewis, Yellow Jackets Executive Deputy AD/COO Jon Palumbo, Clemson Deputy AD Kevin White, Georgia State AD Charlie Cobb, Auburn Executive Deputy AD/former Georgia Southern AD Jared Benko, and a wild card: “Tech might look toward a similar area when it targeted Batt in 2022 – an administrator at a Power Four conference school with experience and success in fundraising and NIL initiatives. Ryan Alpert, the deputy athletics director and chief operating officer at Tennessee, would fit that description.” (link)

Northwestern AD Mark Jackson Q&As with The Daily Northwestern student newspaper about his first year on the job, updates to Ryan Field and more. On Ryan Field’s progress, Jackson notes that “no major curveballs as of yet to set us back. It will be a tight window leading into the 2026 season for sure, but we’re really excited. Anybody who’s driven by Central Street with the structural steel up, you can really start to see it take shape. The winter was bearable – it could have been worse – so that allowed us to stay on track. We started our initial sales process and launch, and that’s all been very optimistic. … We’re really trying to think through every element of the design and the fan experience to give us the best chance to win, but also to create that experience that you need to be there. … You’ve seen it happen in basketball at Welsh-Ryan Arena, and we need to build off of that and continue that momentum.” Regarding the temporary seating added to the lakefront’s Martin Stadium, Jackson says nothing has been finalized yet. “There’s certainly a lot of concepts out there. We know the way that it attracted a national media audience. We know there’s something special to showcase sports in that environment. We don’t want to take steps back from that. I think we’re just starting those conversations now. We’re going to keep it up through 2026, and it’ll allow us the opportunity to look at all those opportunities.” Post-House, Jackson says Northwestern is “not going to be built like a traditional athletic department. We’re really going to build it like a C-suite model, and we’ve done some of that already. So we hired a Chief Revenue Officer (Jesse Marks), we hired a Chief Communications and Branding Officer (Savanna Wood), we’ll have a chief operating officer and a chief administrative officer. Those positions are all uniquely designed to help navigate what’s coming at us. In a lot of ways, I’m more like a CEO than I am an athletic director. We can’t lose sight of the academic mission and all that goes into the student-athlete experience. But we’ve done countless models of the what-ifs around the House case.” Full interview. (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann unpacks the NCAA’s argument against Tennessee men’s basketball standout Zakai Zeigler as Zeigler seeks an additional year of eligibility. “Among the points raised in the NCAA’s brief is that Zeigler is not an NBA prospect and thus an additional season is unlikely to make him a candidate for the NBA. ‘All publicly available evidence indicates that Plaintiff, respectfully, has a difficult path to the NBA, at this juncture.’” McCann continues: “Zeigler is also depicted as selfish. As the NCAA spins it, Zeigler is asking a court to make him the first college athlete ‘in history’ to obtain a judicial decree to play a fifth season ‘as a matter of right.’ If Zeigler is granted that chance, there would be a loser: a roster spot for a graduating high school senior who would otherwise join the Volunteers would be ‘reapportioned’ to Zeigler. … The NCAA also contends that a core premise of Zeigler’s lawsuit, which argues that removing experienced college players harms the labor market, is erroneous. While Zeigler suggests NIL deals are most lucrative for seniors, the NCAA says ‘non-seniors, on average, have higher NIL valuations than seniors.’ The NCAA’s expert witness, Cal Berkeley economics professor Matthew Backus, provided a declaration referencing that individual NIL valuations for college basketball players shows that non-seniors’ have a higher average NIL valuation than seniors, $1.2M compared to $1.07M.” More analysis. Inside Carolina’s Greg Barnes reports North Carolina is providing an unprecedented amount of support to the men’s basketball team. Specifically, “multiple sources have confirmed that UNC has surpassed the $14M mark in its financial commitment to the 2025-26 roster, approximately triple what was spent on the roster a year ago. Men’s basketball executive director and general manager Jim Tanner’s $850K salary represents another bullet point in confirming the university’s support of its prized program.” Barnes goes on to point out that “there are 16 employees in the men’s basketball program, split between [Head Coach Hubert] Davis and his five assistant coaches and 10 support staffers. UNC paid out $4.2M in coach compensation and $1.6M in support staff compensation in 2023-24, according to data from the university’s most recent NCAA financial report. When adding Tanner’s salary to the budget line, UNC has increased its support staff compensation by 150% since NIL legislation took effect in 2021. Total staff compensation for the men’s basketball program will likely exceed $7M in 2025-26. Davis, who signed a two-year contract extension in December that runs through June 2030, will make $3.3M next season with an additional $1.25M in bonuses available.” (link)

Texas Southern AD Kevin Granger has been accused of sexual assaulting a staff member in a lawsuit filed this week. The staff member is being represented by attorney Tony Buzbee, whose office indicates in a statement that "the case alleges that on April 30, 2025, Athletic Director Granger invited [the alleged victim] to his office. While there, Granger repeatedly asked [the alleged victim] if she was ‘recording him’ or ‘wearing a wire’ while he proceeded to inappropriately pat her down. The lawsuit further alleges that Granger continued to question [the alleged victim] about her relationship history and if she had ever been romantically involved with a colleague. According to the suit, Granger's questions became increasingly vulgar and graphic. As set forth in the lawsuit, Granger ultimately propositioned [the alleged victim] seeking sex…and told [the alleged victim] if she would comply with his requests, he could 'help her career.'” A statement from TSU reads: "As of today, Texas Southern University is aware of allegations involving a senior member of our leadership team. Venable LLP Partner Philip Sheng recently noted that, according to U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken’s April 23 Scheduling Order, the parties in the House settlement had summary judgement and Daubert briefing due on June 6. In an update Sheng points out that the parties have moved for an extension of upcoming deadlines, which Wilken has granted. (link, link)

CBS’ Brandon Marcello on the House settlement: “Thinking among those close to House case: Judge taking extended time to write detailed order approving settlement so that it is as appeal-proof as possible. If she denied settlement (no appeal process), she would've done so quickly. Again, just thoughts shared with me today.” (link)

Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly also chimes in on the House settlement: “Many NCAA staff members thought it would have been last week. Some commissioners thought this week. I have been saying it will be during NACDA week, as Judge Wilken knows when major NCAA events are being conducted. Remember, she held the larger settlement hearing on the day of the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Game – for nearly 6.5 hours!” (link)

Georgia AD Josh Brooks talks more about the College Football Playoff format, explaining on SiriusXM that “if we were to go to 16, there’s arguments we made about four-four this and that, but then you look at and go 5 and 11, we’ve had a glut of teams in that 13 and 16 range. If we trust the committee to hold true, and historically you look at the top 16 over the last 10 years and say, ‘Man, we’d be averaging five or six a year, we’d be in good shape.’ But you would ask the committee that, okay, now that it’s 16 for ranking, don’t start having new criteria. … You want to hold true to that. But I think what we’ve got to fix first before we talk about nine games, eight games, or 4-4-3-2-1, whatever, we’ve got to get down to the root of the problem and really talk about how we’re going to decide whether it’s 12 teams, 14, teams, how are we deciding?” As far as the methodology for picking the CFP field, Brooks remarks: “It’s hard in football because there aren’t as many data points. That’s hard, but there are things like RPI and things we can look at, to really look at a combination of the metric score that we can bring to the committee and say, ‘These are the best teams. But can you do that from a conference room watching football games? Do you need to go to some games in person? Do you need people that live and breathe and see it every day? I don’t know what that right makeup is.” (link)

LSU Executive Deputy AD/COO Keli Zinn joins Connect's Kristen Eargle on the latest episode of The Career Hustle to reflect on her path to Baton Rouge, which has included being the first woman to lead the athletics department of West Virginia when she was named interim AD. Zinn also discusses some of the unique projects she's worked on, including securing the Amazon Prime series, "The Money Game,” and helping to provide support and infrastructure to LSU's women's gymnastics team, which celebrated its first national title. In reflecting on her career path, Zinn acknowledges she doesn’t know if she had the “foresight or even the strategy at the time, but I think a difference-maker for me was really finding myself in positions where I had people above me who both had the capability, but also the willingness to give me opportunity. I think we all have the pleasure of working for a lot of great folks, but maybe they don’t always have the authority to open up some of those doors or give you extra added duties, and I was fortunate to have both.” Check out the full Q&A on Connect. With viewership metrics now factoring into the ACC’s revenue distribution, The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel notes Virginia Tech’s football opener against South Carolina presents a potential “ratings windfall,” but the next two contests – Vanderbilt and Old Dominion – offer less promise due to their airing on the ACC Network. Hokies AD Whit Babcock: “We’re supposed to get weekly (ratings) updates, so yeah, that will be bizarre. Tell all Hokie fans to turn their TVs on before they leave for the game.” Babcock also tells Teel he’s evaluating every future non-conference series the Hokies have scheduled. “We will take some action on that this summer. It’s a new world and a new way of distributing revenue, and it’s sent us back to put a magnifying glass on the schedule. … When we perform well, we are one of the top-tier brands in the league from a viewership standpoint. The last three years, we’ve certainly come back to the middle of the pack, but the ACC needs Virginia Tech to be great again, and there’s nothing I want more than that.” The Hokies stand “ninth or 10th” in ACC viewership over the past four years, Babcock said, numbers that are already baked into the five-year, rolling average for 2025-26, “and that’s not good enough.” (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir believes that even in the NIL era, money is not the only animating factor for some student-athletes. “Some of the kids that came in, one of the things I asked them was, why did you leave your school? The interesting thing is that one of them told me that in this new era of NIL transfers, coaches are afraid to coach them hard. He felt that he could be pushed a little bit more; ‘I’m just a pretty good player, so I needed to find someone I was going to get pushed by, not based on what I was getting paid, instead help develop me.’ That was the theme I heard from our players: they are being developed in a different manner than at their previous school. So that was really cool.” (link)

Iowa State Senior Assoc. AD/SWA Calli Sanders has agreed to remain in her role rather than begin a phased retirement on July 1, according to Cyclones AD Jamie Pollard, who says: "I am very pleased that Calli has decided to postpone her retirement plans for at least another year and continue in her current role with the Cyclones. Calli has been an integral part of our administrative team for more than 20 years and having her stay will provide tremendous continuity within our department as we navigate these challenging times in intercollegiate athletics." Florida AD Scott Stricklin and Baseball HC Kevin O’Sullivan have released statements regarding O’Sullivan’s actions during last weekend’s NCAA Regional at Coastal Carolina. Stricklin: “This afternoon I met with Kevin O'Sullivan and told him that his actions prior to yesterday's NCAA Tournament game fell well short of expectations of how Gators treat people. One of our department's core values is respect, and Coach O'Sullivan's unacceptable actions failed to demonstrate that. On behalf of Florida Athletics, I want to personally apologize to everyone impacted - including NCAA representatives, Coastal Carolina and their staff, East Carolina and their team – as well as to Gator Nation.” O’Sullivan: “Prior to yesterday's NCAA Tournament game against East Carolina, I let my emotions get the best of me and channeled that energy in a way I should not have. I want to sincerely apologize for my actions and behavior to the entire NCAA Regional field of Coastal Carolina, East Carolina and Fairfield, the NCAA – including site representatives Rick French and Mark Scalf – as well as all of Gator Nation. I did not represent the University of Florida to the appropriate standard yesterday and take full responsibility for that, and promise to learn from this experience and be better moving forward. I appreciate all of the tireless efforts on behalf of host Coastal Carolina, their Tournament Director Bryan Stiles, and the NCAA over the course of NCAA Regionals, and am sorry for allowing this instance to get in the way of an otherwise great weekend of postseason baseball.” (link)

The Mountain West, WCC and WAC have all released their 2025 volleyball schedules, and Grand Canyon was listed on none of them, according to Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray, who notes: “That's important because Grand Canyon was a member of the WAC in 2024-25; was scheduled to be a member of the WCC in 2025-26; and will be a member of the MW in 2026-27. But where Grand Canyon will play next athletic season is unknown.” As for whether the Antelopes could possibly join the Mountain West early, Murray points out that there are only seven voting members in the league until July 1, 2026. “Those schools include Nevada, UNLV, Air Force, New Mexico, San Jose State, Wyoming and Hawaii. If those seven schools want to add Grand Canyon for the 2025-26 season, one year before UC Davis and UTEP join – as well as Northern Illinois in football only – they can vote to make that a reality regardless of the feelings of the five departing schools, who are required to play whatever conference schedule the MW offers them. … One additional complicating factor would be conference distribution in 2025-26, including media-right money. But there's a real chance the Antelopes would forgo its conference money for 2025-26 to simply have a home for next season before becoming a full-revenue member in 2026-27.” (link)

The New York Post’s Kirsten Fleming shares some stories from stakeholders about how NIL has changed college sports, and ESPN college hoops analyst Fran Frischilla says: “I had a referee recently text me. He said, ‘I did games this year where I could tell the coach was afraid to yell at the players because he was worried the kid might get mad and transfer.’ … There are teams that, when you watch games, you think, ‘How the hell are they losing with all that talent?’ And you find out one guy is jealous of another guy because he’s getting more money.” Fleming also points out there are several individuals dedicated to helping student-athletes manage their money wisely, and Scout Founder Michael Haddix Jr. tells Fleming: “I’ve heard examples where players were going through money and not paying their taxes and jumping into the transfer portal, asking the new coaches for an advance so they can clean up their financial mess.” Poneman & Naiditch Representation Co-Founder Daniel Poneman explains that his agency will be trying to forestall scenarios like this by hosting clients in Scottsdale for a two-week offseason training. “It’s like a boot camp, where we’re bringing in tax experts, financial advisors and spiritual teachers. We’re saying, ‘Look, the money you’re making is not for you to go crazy and buy bottle service on your college campus. This is to put in your Roth IRA and into a diversified portfolio. This is life-changing money if you allow it to change your life positively.” (link)
