New Navy AD Michael Kelly was introduced in Annapolis yesterday: “It’s not lost on me that there have been three athletic directors at the Naval Academy since I’ve been on this earth. It doesn’t come open much because it’s a great job, one you never want to leave. It’s a great athletic director job, in and of itself, but obviously it gets involved in a bigger mission and everything the Naval Academy stands for in developing leaders. Being part of a bigger mission appeals to me and I know how special it is. I pinch myself realizing how fortunate I am. I look forward to making the academy proud. [...] I do think it’s important for the (College Football Playoff) expansion to happen mainly to make sure that Navy and all the American schools can maintain a reasonable access point to the College Football Playoff. Ideally, the date can be left alone for this national treasure that is Army-Navy. Certainly preserving the right time window so it’s exclusive so the nation can put its eyeballs on this game that is a great American tradition.” (link)

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould prefers the “at-large” College Football Playoff model rather than one that awards AQs and tells The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner she sees the Pac-12 on a tier between the Power 4 and Group of 5. “We are in a lane of our own, and the metrics support that. We’re closer to the ACC and Big 12 than to the other folks.” While Wilner notes that some may scoff at that assessment, he notes Gould’s position is “based on data exclusively from a narrow timeframe: the past four years, which coincide with the implementation of NIL and the transfer portal. Gould views performance data from the 2010s as completely outdated, akin to counting with an abacus.” Gould explains that the “marketplace has changed drastically. The longer historical metrics don’t make sense to me.” Using the aforementioned parameters, Wilner points out that “six of the seven teams in the rebuilt Pac-12 (86%) have been ranked in the AP poll, compared to 36% of the schools in the American and 33% in the restructured Mountain West. Five of the seven teams in the rebuilt Pac-12 (71%) have been ranked by the CFP selection committee, compared to 29% of the American schools and 22% of those in the Mountain West.” Whatever the format is, Gould says: “I don’t think the model changes our mindset in terms of what we’re looking for in future members. We’re looking for schools that are aligned, on a positive trajectory and willing to invest.” More. (link)

On the Canzano & Wilner podcast, Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill expands on his governance position, noting the Power 4 – and particularly the Big Ten and SEC – have essentially bilaterally decided the future of college sports. “I look at everything from the CFP piece to them sorting that out amongst themselves to this new College Sports Commission, the CSC, which is essentially like a coup happened. It’s like all of a sudden we were members of the NCAA and now we're members of the NCAA and we're going to be members of CSC, and the P4 has determined all the rules, regulations and costs inside the CSC, and none of us had any say in it at all. It’s just, ‘Okay, here's the rules you're going to follow.’ And we still don't know, as we tape this right here, what the costs are going to be. So, the whole decisionmaking process around Division I athletics is really cloudy, confusing and hard to explain as a commissioner. Our presidents and ADs are looking to me for some answers, and I feel like I have the cloudiest crystal ball in history.” Wistrcill also says the Big Sky is keeping a close eye on the mediation between the Mountain West and Pac-12. “It’s over two weeks now. One of the attorneys I talked to yesterday said it’s highly unusual to have it last this long. So, why is it lasting this long? Obviously, it’s got to be about money, right? And the implications for the decisions must be so dramatic one way or the other that I get the feeling that, like, today they’re just sitting there staring at each other. … A lot happens after that depending on what the outcome could be. … If the Mountain West loses a bunch of members, they’ve got to decide do they want to survive? And if they want to survive, they could come calling on some Big Sky schools, and that could have a dramatic impact on us.” (link)

As UCF continues establishing its men’s basketball program in the Big 12, Knights AD Terry Mohajir adds some perspective: “Men’s basketball is its best since I’ve been here. Remember, we’ve only been to five NCAA tournaments in the history of the school and our basketball program is better now than when I got here in February 2021. There’s no doubt in my mind. … We knew we had some work to do on men’s basketball. Not only is it the best basketball conference in the country, but our basketball team is more competitive than it’s ever been.” The Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel points out the average Big 12 basketball program spends approximately $11M on men’s hoops with Kansas spending more than $16M. UCF’s budget is more than $7M. Mohajir notes: “It’s comparable. Is it the best? No. Is it the worst? No. We have the resources now to be highly competitive in the Big 12. … This is a big year for [Men’s Basketball HC] Johnny [Dawkins] as well and I’m excited that he’s here. I talk to Johnny a lot about personnel issues, coaching issues, who he’s hired, rev-share, scholarships. I love basketball and basketball is a huge part of this conference, and it’s going to continue to get better. We need to resource it as much as we can.” Pressed about Dawkins’ future, Mohajir says: “Why don’t we just help him try to win as much as he possibly can? We’ll evaluate after the year. Everything’s year-to-year nowadays…so we’ll see.” (link)

January 10 will be an important date for college hockey programs next season because, as College Hockey Insider publisher Mike McMahon explains: “That’s the deadline for players to return to their CHL teams and still be eligible for the playoffs (think of it like the NHL trade deadline).” With CHL players now eligible to play in college, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman notes the “CHL is wondering if players will go, not find it to their liking, and then try to come back.” McMahon observes: “This would be less of a concern for NCAA programs if not for the roster caps. The majority of teams planning to carry 26 players informed me that their expected breakdown was 15 forwards, 8 defensemen, and 3 goalies. Teams dress 12 or 13 forwards and six or seven defensemen in each game. If even one player leaves at the semester break, it doesn’t leave programs a lot of wiggle room to account for injuries. And remember, if that player leaves on January 9 or 10, most programs will be pushed up against enrollment deadlines if they want to add a player for the second semester.” The extent of attrition will largely come down to roles, according to one agent, who tells McMahon: “If a player is happy in their role and development, they won’t look to leave. I don’t think [team] competitiveness matters as much as the player’s role, which leads to the player’s development. If the player feels supported, they aren’t likely to leave.” On that point, McMahon contends: “What a program’s arena looks like doesn’t matter. If universities want to see an on-ice return for their investment, then invest in the players and player development. I don’t think NIL or rev-share will matter much in hockey either. The high-end players who will demand the most money will still only go to a select few schools.” (link)

The Athletic’s Manny Navarro analyzes the correlation between recruiting rankings and NFL Draft picks and notes that “in the last five years, only seven players who were not ranked at all in the 247Sports Composite (4.3%) were among the 160 players taken in the first round of the draft. An overwhelming majority (80.1%) of the players drafted overall (not just in the first round) were ranked as three-stars or better. On average, there are roughly 32 five-star recruits and somewhere between 300 to 400 four-stars among the thousands of high school prospects per cycle. In the recent five-year draft window, 65% of the first-round picks (104 of 160) and 52% of the players taken in the first three rounds (267 of 514) were blue-chip recruits coming out of high school.” During that five-year window, Texas has produced the most draft picks (157) while Georgia has produced the most first-rounders (20). Broken down by time spent in college, 469 picks spent five years in college, 430 spent four and 249 spent three. Meanwhile, nearly 84% of the NFL Draft picks over the last five years played their last college game for a Power 4 school, including Notre Dame. By school, Georgia has the most overall picks over the five-year window (55) while Alabama has the most first-round selections (16). More. (link)

AD Jen Cohen: “This is such a highly competitive time in college athletics, and as we've been working to develop a road map for winning the new era, we're really prioritizing partnerships and being strategic about who we partner with across all areas. As we looked at the MMR space, Learfield's vision and leadership have so much natural alignment with ours.” (link)

More from Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill in the second of a two-part interview on The Big Mountain podcast, where he discusses DI governance changes and March Madness expansion. Wistrcill contends the Power 4 conferences are far more different than the other 28 DI conferences than the other 28 conferences are from one another. “What we do in the Big Sky is not that far different than when I was an AD in the MAC – money-wise, sports sponsorship, media rights. [There is] quite frankly not that much difference [between] the Mountain West and the Big Sky compared to the jump from all the rest of us to those four conferences. So now what you have is those four conferences kind of splitting as well. We have the P2 - the Big Ten and the SEC - wanting to drive their agenda and their feelings and their thoughts about where college athletics should go. … Most of what they're proposing I don't have a problem with. They want to have autonomy decisions about things that are really important to them.” Wistrcill notes that right now if the P4 wanted to have three spring football games, “they would need our vote to do that. Now, I don't really care if they want to do that. More power to them. We’re not going to do that. … If they want to employ 27 football coaches right now, they would have to legislate that through all of college football. And if they want to do that, go right ahead. I don't care. What I care about are things like championship access that’s meaningful to our institutions. I care about the money that flows from the NCAA into the member institutions. And then the last thing I care a lot about is the checks and balances that can keep us together under one tent. I think this governance structure goes a little bit too far, especially in that last area. What it would allow them to do if this passes is essentially make all decisions in whatever area they want to change without the membership checking them.” Wistrcill cites as an example the P4 telling the Big Sky they’ll keep their men’s basketball AQ, but it will be locked into the Tuesday of tourney week against, for instance, the Mountain West AQ. “That’s where I have a problem and that’s where I feel like I’ve got to stick up and fight for what I believe in.” On March Madness expansion, Wistrcill says he believes the votes are split 50/50. “I think we’re all open to the discussion.” More. Massachusetts AD Ryan Bamford tells the Daily Collegian’s Dean Wendel that when it comes to revenue-sharing, “we’re going to be in a really positive position as it relates to our [MAC] peers from an additional benefit, scholarship and NIL standpoint in our investment there. In a sport like basketball, we want to compete with the Big East schools, and we don’t just want to compete with the MAC schools. We want to compete for student-athletes: for acquiring them, recruiting them and then retaining them with those in the Big East and some of the [Power 4 schools].” According to Bamford, UMass plans to spend $5-6M in rev-share on student-athletes in 2025-26 with plans on increasing that figure to $8-10M the following year. “[Our finances give us] a pretty good head start and advantage. I think we [have] to spend those resources strategically and smartly. … We’re going to be in a position in two or three years where we may be spending more than potentially some of the high-end [Atlantic 10] schools and maybe even lower-end ‘Power 4’ schools in basketball.” To help reach those rev-share figures, Bamford explains that “some of the nutrition and dining programs, the academic support services, we’re in a really healthy spot in a number of areas that if we were to adjust, pare it back by 5%, it’s probably not going to change the operational posture. We’ve already talked to our coaches about [it], that if you could do away with five percent of something, what would it be? … It’s just going to get reinvested into something that probably, by measure, would impact winning a little bit more.” (link)

With the Women’s College World Series championship set to continue tonight, ESPN’s Dave Wilson profiles Texas Tech Softball HC Gerry Glasco, who tells him: “Nothing about softball is scary to me.” For context, Wilson points out that “Glasco has lived a colorful life and has taken a winding path to becoming one of the best coaches in college softball at 66, making a run at a national title in his first season at Texas Tech. But he also has the kind of perspective that comes from immense tragedy. In 2019, his youngest daughter Geri Ann died in a car accident when she was a volunteer coach for him at Louisiana.” Glasco explains: "Once you realize that you don't have fear of failure to keep you from doing things, you realize there's things you can't understand. You go for it." Prior to coaching softball as a career, Glasco was a hunting and fishing guide, “taking businessmen and wealthy hunters quail and duck hunting in Mexico … But beginning in 2007, his trips across the border started becoming more treacherous. He was later informed that disputes between rival drug cartels made it too dangerous to continue operating as usual; additionally, the DEA told him his clients were too high-profile and would become kidnapping targets if their travel arrangements or hunting permits were leaked. With his primary source of income now unavailable, he turned full-time to softball, eventually landing a job on Georgia’s staff. Bulldogs HC Lu Harris Champer says she was always drawn to how hard Glasco's players played for him, because he was funny, charming and they knew he cared for them. “Whether things are going in the right direction or the wrong direction, doesn't matter. The energy is there, the passion is there. The belief is there and the figure-it-out mindset is there." Lots more. (link)

ECU Baseball HC Cliff Godwin writes on X that “Our system is so BROKEN! We have coaches at P4 schools texting our players directly who are not in portal! And we have proof!" On3’s Thomas Goldkamp: “Cliff Godwin didn’t provide proof immediately, though his original tweet was still very fresh at the time of this writing. So it’ll be interesting to see if he opts to lay everything bare on social media at some point.” (link)

Meanwhile, Dan Furman, president of the Louisville-focused 502Circle, says Cardinals Baseball HC Dan McDonnell truly bought into NIL for the first time last offseason after a hesitant embrace the year prior. While Furman declined to provide precise dollar amounts, he tells the Courier-Journal’s Payton Titus the 502Circle ramped up spending for the 2025 roster to retain talented players including (outfielder) Zion Rose, (righthanded pitcher) Patrick Forbes and (righthanded pitcher) Tucker Biven. More Furman: “I would be hard-pressed to find seven teams that spent more in the ACC. And the ACC was the most competitive baseball league in the country this year.” Since FY19, UL’s baseball spending has increased from $4.572M (3.02% of the budget) to $5.59M (3.39%). (link)

Villanova will join the Patriot League as an associate member in football beginning in 2026. Wildcats AD Eric Roedl: “We have great respect for the institutions that make up a very competitive FCS conference and we share in their strong academic missions. The geographic footprint of the Patriot League is a perfect fit for Villanova, and as we get ready to embark on a new chapter for our football program, we remain committed to competing at the highest levels of the FCS and continuing to add to our accomplished history on the gridiron.” (link)

Heitner Legal Founder Darren Heitner notes the pending Texas bill relating to the compensation and professional representation of prospective college athletes has been signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott. “The biggest change? Texas removed the ban on paying PROSPECTIVE college athletes for their NIL. Previously, high school recruits couldn't earn NIL money until they were enrolled. This opens the door for legitimate recruiting incentives through NIL deals. But the law prohibits NIL arrangements with prospective student athletes under 17 (unless already enrolled in college).” (link); Full bill. (link)

Sexual assault survivor and activist Brenda Tracy has filed a lawsuit against the Michigan State Board of Trustees, alleging that MSU mishandled her 2022 sexual harassment complaint against former Football HC Mel Tucker and that trustees leaked her name to the media and public at large, which caused threats and harassment, as well as damage to her reputation and business as a sexual assault awareness activist. The suit seeks unspecified damages for seven counts, including gross negligence and violation of due process rights. Tracy also alleges that the university should have done a better job of screening Tucker before hiring him in 2020. She says she experienced psychological and emotional distress that also caused medical and therapy bills. A Michigan State spokesperson said the university does not have a comment on the lawsuit. A defamation lawsuit Tracy previously filed against Tucker is set for trial in June 2026. (link)
