Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger with a Friday drop: “In a somewhat stunning move, ESPN is finalizing an agreement to extend its sublicense package with TNT Sports to include the CFP semifinal round, sources tell @YahooSports. The deal would grant TNT Sports broadcasting rights to one CFP semifinal annually in 2026, 2027 and 2028.” (link)

In other post-season football news, for the first time since 1945, the Ivy League will participate in the FCS Playoffs. Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer: “According to everybody in and around the league who spoke to Sports Illustrated in recent weeks about the decision, it was the fact that this effort was spearheaded by the athletes—and not just the football players who stood to benefit. A constant refrain was that it was not equitable that one sport was prevented from joining the NCAA’s postseason structure.” (link)

AAC Commissioner Tim Pernetti covers several topics with former multistop NFL HC Jon Gruden and suggests opening the football transfer window just one time in the spring, adding: “You’ve had spring practice, you’ve set their depth chart. If kids don’t like where they’re sitting, then maybe you let them move on. And maybe we let them have one for free, but the second or third time around, there’s got to be something – there’s got to be the year in waiting, there has to be some kind of consequence to multiple transfers. I think that at least calms the system and gives coaches the ability to build culture. … It’s a dangerous game in our business right now.” Pernetti also remarks that “I think fans have fatigue about what’s going on right now. I really do. I think they’re tired of it. I think they long for the romantic days of when everything was clear cut, and the rivalries were in place and things were understandable. And they actually could see the future. So, I think fans have fatigue. And the reality of what’s being discussed and should the playoff have automatic qualifiers, can we create new inventory, can we keep more teams in our league in the hunt longer in the year? You can argue some of that is better for fans, but just in general fans have fatigue about what’s going on.” More from Pernetti. (link)

UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk tells the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch and Jaweed Kaleem he plans to be involved in athletics “because I think athletics plays a very central role. It is, first, an avenue for recruiting very talented students. Secondly, it benefits the other students. It enriches the student experience of everyone. But let me tell you, when we talk about the contribution to society, part of the reason many universities have a deficit, it’s not because of football. Football actually has a positive cash flow for the university. What we do in the United States that no other country that I know of does, is that universities are the place where we train Olympians, Olympic competitors, competitors who go to the Olympic Games. That function – just like the research function – has been delegated to universities and we are investing in having Olympic athletes. … I acknowledge this costs money, but the money goes to be able to have all the other disciplines that do not generate money. The most direct way to do that would be to find other sources of funding. Right now, we use the revenue from football and that requires investments to fund the entire athletic operation. It is time to have a conversation and create a legal framework that doesn’t leave it to each institution or each state to find their own way in this. We’re part of an ecosystem. I think the move to the Big Ten has been very positive in that respect. And those are the conversations we are having. How do we generate other sources of revenue – mostly to be able not just to maintain the excellence of the sports that are widely followed by the public, but also all the other sports, including, very importantly, the Olympic sports, which are such a source of pride?” (link)

Florida AD Scott Stricklin joins the Another Dooley Noted Podcast and says the Gators asked everyone to cut 5% out of their budgets. “We didn’t care where it came from. We let the coaches make the decision. … The fact of the matter is when times are good and the revenue is flowing, you still have money constraints, but there’s something healthy about looking at a budget and seeing where we can be more efficient? So, [revenue-sharing] has caused us to have to do that. So that’s where we found some of the money, if you will, some of that cost-saving is helping pay for the $20.5M to go to rev-share to support our athletes. And it’s going to be $20.5M either in rev-share or new scholarship costs. So, we go from scholarship limits to roster limits. Any scholarship we give over the historical NCAA scholarship limits, the first $2.5M of those goes against that $20.5M, but it’s still money coming out of the budget.” Stricklin also addresses his comments about a committee perhaps being a suboptimal way to select the College Football Playoff field: “If the committee was such a great idea, every pro league would have a committee to determine who’s in their postseason. If the committee was such a great idea, we’d all wake up on Monday morning after the NFL regular season and wait for Roger Goodell to stand up and tell us what the committee decided who’s in the playoffs. But they don’t do that because it’s not the best way to do it. Because the best way to do it is to play representative schedules and look at your win-loss and how you did against teams in your division…and have an easy-to-understand format for people to follow. College football does not have that [at the national level]. … We use a committee because there’s not a great way to do it. The one thing that’s intriguing to me about the idea of the automatics is you are taking away the subjective nature of a committee and replacing it with the objective conference win-loss record, how you did against teams in your league.” Lots more from Stricklin. Kentucky led the charge against the SEC putting a cap on how much its teams could spend per sport, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who tells Kentucky Sports Radio founder Matt Jones: “You’re not going to be surprised by this, but Kentucky did not – and some others too – but Kentucky Basketball specifically was a pretty big voice in the room to make sure that those standards weren’t set as a policy because Kentucky, obviously, wants to spend more [in basketball].” Dellenger notes that other schools, such as South Carolina with women’s basketball, and Arkansas and LSU with baseball, raised similar concerns. “It wasn’t just Kentucky that wanted to spend more in basketball, so it raised concerns about the standards that the SEC was talking about setting. … There were plenty of programs that wanted to spend more than the sort of maximum standards that the SEC was talking about doing. And so they kind of bailed on it for now. And I’ve quoted [SEC Commissioner] Greg Sankey in a story or two about that, about how they could come back to that, and that’s still a discussion topic, so that everybody would be on more of an even playing field.” (link)

Legal Ledger…
+ A Michigan state court has granted Eastern Michigan football student-athlete Blake Bustard a temporary restraining order prohibiting the NCAA from enforcing its five-year eligibility clock. Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter: “It’s the same rule enjoined in the Jett Elad case. As with the Elad case, the ability to receive NIL compensation played a role in the court’s decision.” (link)
+ WRAL’s Brian Murphy reports Judge James Dever III of the Eastern District of North Carolina has denied a preliminary injunction in NC State football player Corey Coley Jr.'s case against the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility. (link)
+ Boise State assistant professor Sam Ehrlich reports another eligibility lawsuit has been filed against the NCAA by a former junior college player, this time by former Appalachian State and would-be UCLA wide receiver Kaedin Robinson. (link); Full complaint. (link); Also from Ehrlich: “One more eligibility lawsuit filed overnight. This one is from ex-Navy, now Colorado State DB Elias Larry. … Larry's case is similar to Zakai Zeigler's: he played four seasons in four years, and wants a fifth year so he can keep his scholarship to allow him to finish his degree (he is not set to graduate until the fall). He also cites $100,000-$500,000 in potential NIL money. Larry cites Navy's policy as a service academy to generally not redshirt players, since service academy students must graduate in four years barring extenuating circumstances. He also cites mental and emotional challenges in 2023 that led to his transfer.” (link)

+ Houston Men’s Basketball HC Kelvin Sampson will earn at least $23.5M over next four years under his new contract, according to the Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte, who reports Sampson’s base salary will be $5.5M in 2025-26 and 2026-27, $6M in 2027-28 and $6.5M in 2028-29. Sampson could receive an additional $1.5M to $2.5M in deferred compensation depending on how long he remains UH’s coach. Duarte: “Sampson will receive a $1.5M payout in deferred compensation if he retires between April 1, 2026 and April 1, 2027, and does not take another position at the school except to become an advisor on his son, head coach-in-waiting Kellen Sampson's, staff. As part of his contract signed in 2023, Kellen Sampson can hire Kelvin Sampson as a full-time advisor for a maximum five years at $300K per year. If Kelvin Sampson is still head coach after April 1, 2027, he will receive $500K in deferred compensation. Any retirement after April 1. 2027 will trigger a $2M deferred payment. … Sampson is also eligible for incentives based on academic and on-court success. That section was removed from his last contract. More, including performance incentives built into the deal. (link)
+ Georgia Softball HC Tony Baldwin received a three-year contract extension through 2029 and a raise to $325K annually before the 2025 season, according to the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer, who notes Baldwin's salary will increase by $25K each year of the contract, topping out at $425K in 2028. Central Arkansas is discontinuing its women’s tennis program. Bears AD Matt Whiting explains: "Decisions like this are incredibly difficult to make, and are not done without considerable thought and review. In this ever-changing landscape of college athletics, it is imperative that we constantly review and evaluate our sports portfolio to ensure that we are making the investments needed to position Central Arkansas Athletics for success now and in the future. Ultimately, this decision is in the best interest of the University and our athletics department at this time." (link)

Old Dominion has broken ground on its new $24M baseball stadium. The complex, half of it funded by private donations, will be called the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex at Bud Metheny Ballpark. Scheduled to open in February, in time for the 2026 season, the project includes 2,500 chair-back seats, luxury suites, spacious offices, multipurpose meeting rooms and a sizable home locker room. Monarchs AD Wood Selig: “I think ODU baseball already operates at a very high level in a nationally competitive conference, the Sun Belt Conference. But I think this will help us keep pace with the arms race, if you will, in college athletics. I think it will give our coaches a chance to potentially recruit an even higher level and caliber of student-athlete.” Selig notes there was another reason to upgrade, explaining that when recruits would come, there were areas the Monarchs hid: “When you go out of your way not to showcase your home, it’s glaring that something is not right. … I would say, without a doubt, that we are dead last [in the Sun Belt] currently with what we provide here.” Now he believes ODU “will easily be in the top half, and that’s saying a lot. When you’re in the upper-half of the Sun Belt baseball facility comparison, you’re in a really impressive group.” (link, link)

Dan Furman, president of the Louisville-focused 502Circle, tells the Courier-Journal’s Payton Titus the collective will transition to a marketing agency to support UofL student-athletes. Furman explains the group will use relationships with agencies like CAA, Klutch Sports Group and Excel Sports Management to continue assisting Cardinals coaches with roster construction and lean into its creative content arm, Floyd Street Media, as well as local business partnerships to help athletes grow their brands and maximize earning potential outside of revenue-sharing. “I still think the functionalities are gonna be pretty similar. It’s just gonna have more layers to it.” Furman adds that the Deloitte clearinghouse “won't necessarily impact how we spend. It's gonna impact how we operate. So we'll just have to be more diligent with the reporting process. We'll have to be more diligent with the deal structure. Like, make sure that what the athlete is doing for the money is more elaborate.” (link)

New Navy AD Michael Kelly was introduced in Annapolis yesterday: “It’s not lost on me that there have been three athletic directors at the Naval Academy since I’ve been on this earth. It doesn’t come open much because it’s a great job, one you never want to leave. It’s a great athletic director job, in and of itself, but obviously it gets involved in a bigger mission and everything the Naval Academy stands for in developing leaders. Being part of a bigger mission appeals to me and I know how special it is. I pinch myself realizing how fortunate I am. I look forward to making the academy proud. [...] I do think it’s important for the (College Football Playoff) expansion to happen mainly to make sure that Navy and all the American schools can maintain a reasonable access point to the College Football Playoff. Ideally, the date can be left alone for this national treasure that is Army-Navy. Certainly preserving the right time window so it’s exclusive so the nation can put its eyeballs on this game that is a great American tradition.” (link)

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould prefers the “at-large” College Football Playoff model rather than one that awards AQs and tells The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner she sees the Pac-12 on a tier between the Power 4 and Group of 5. “We are in a lane of our own, and the metrics support that. We’re closer to the ACC and Big 12 than to the other folks.” While Wilner notes that some may scoff at that assessment, he notes Gould’s position is “based on data exclusively from a narrow timeframe: the past four years, which coincide with the implementation of NIL and the transfer portal. Gould views performance data from the 2010s as completely outdated, akin to counting with an abacus.” Gould explains that the “marketplace has changed drastically. The longer historical metrics don’t make sense to me.” Using the aforementioned parameters, Wilner points out that “six of the seven teams in the rebuilt Pac-12 (86%) have been ranked in the AP poll, compared to 36% of the schools in the American and 33% in the restructured Mountain West. Five of the seven teams in the rebuilt Pac-12 (71%) have been ranked by the CFP selection committee, compared to 29% of the American schools and 22% of those in the Mountain West.” Whatever the format is, Gould says: “I don’t think the model changes our mindset in terms of what we’re looking for in future members. We’re looking for schools that are aligned, on a positive trajectory and willing to invest.” More. (link)

On the Canzano & Wilner podcast, Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill expands on his governance position, noting the Power 4 – and particularly the Big Ten and SEC – have essentially bilaterally decided the future of college sports. “I look at everything from the CFP piece to them sorting that out amongst themselves to this new College Sports Commission, the CSC, which is essentially like a coup happened. It’s like all of a sudden we were members of the NCAA and now we're members of the NCAA and we're going to be members of CSC, and the P4 has determined all the rules, regulations and costs inside the CSC, and none of us had any say in it at all. It’s just, ‘Okay, here's the rules you're going to follow.’ And we still don't know, as we tape this right here, what the costs are going to be. So, the whole decisionmaking process around Division I athletics is really cloudy, confusing and hard to explain as a commissioner. Our presidents and ADs are looking to me for some answers, and I feel like I have the cloudiest crystal ball in history.” Wistrcill also says the Big Sky is keeping a close eye on the mediation between the Mountain West and Pac-12. “It’s over two weeks now. One of the attorneys I talked to yesterday said it’s highly unusual to have it last this long. So, why is it lasting this long? Obviously, it’s got to be about money, right? And the implications for the decisions must be so dramatic one way or the other that I get the feeling that, like, today they’re just sitting there staring at each other. … A lot happens after that depending on what the outcome could be. … If the Mountain West loses a bunch of members, they’ve got to decide do they want to survive? And if they want to survive, they could come calling on some Big Sky schools, and that could have a dramatic impact on us.” (link)

As UCF continues establishing its men’s basketball program in the Big 12, Knights AD Terry Mohajir adds some perspective: “Men’s basketball is its best since I’ve been here. Remember, we’ve only been to five NCAA tournaments in the history of the school and our basketball program is better now than when I got here in February 2021. There’s no doubt in my mind. … We knew we had some work to do on men’s basketball. Not only is it the best basketball conference in the country, but our basketball team is more competitive than it’s ever been.” The Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel points out the average Big 12 basketball program spends approximately $11M on men’s hoops with Kansas spending more than $16M. UCF’s budget is more than $7M. Mohajir notes: “It’s comparable. Is it the best? No. Is it the worst? No. We have the resources now to be highly competitive in the Big 12. … This is a big year for [Men’s Basketball HC] Johnny [Dawkins] as well and I’m excited that he’s here. I talk to Johnny a lot about personnel issues, coaching issues, who he’s hired, rev-share, scholarships. I love basketball and basketball is a huge part of this conference, and it’s going to continue to get better. We need to resource it as much as we can.” Pressed about Dawkins’ future, Mohajir says: “Why don’t we just help him try to win as much as he possibly can? We’ll evaluate after the year. Everything’s year-to-year nowadays…so we’ll see.” (link)

January 10 will be an important date for college hockey programs next season because, as College Hockey Insider publisher Mike McMahon explains: “That’s the deadline for players to return to their CHL teams and still be eligible for the playoffs (think of it like the NHL trade deadline).” With CHL players now eligible to play in college, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman notes the “CHL is wondering if players will go, not find it to their liking, and then try to come back.” McMahon observes: “This would be less of a concern for NCAA programs if not for the roster caps. The majority of teams planning to carry 26 players informed me that their expected breakdown was 15 forwards, 8 defensemen, and 3 goalies. Teams dress 12 or 13 forwards and six or seven defensemen in each game. If even one player leaves at the semester break, it doesn’t leave programs a lot of wiggle room to account for injuries. And remember, if that player leaves on January 9 or 10, most programs will be pushed up against enrollment deadlines if they want to add a player for the second semester.” The extent of attrition will largely come down to roles, according to one agent, who tells McMahon: “If a player is happy in their role and development, they won’t look to leave. I don’t think [team] competitiveness matters as much as the player’s role, which leads to the player’s development. If the player feels supported, they aren’t likely to leave.” On that point, McMahon contends: “What a program’s arena looks like doesn’t matter. If universities want to see an on-ice return for their investment, then invest in the players and player development. I don’t think NIL or rev-share will matter much in hockey either. The high-end players who will demand the most money will still only go to a select few schools.” (link)

The Athletic’s Manny Navarro analyzes the correlation between recruiting rankings and NFL Draft picks and notes that “in the last five years, only seven players who were not ranked at all in the 247Sports Composite (4.3%) were among the 160 players taken in the first round of the draft. An overwhelming majority (80.1%) of the players drafted overall (not just in the first round) were ranked as three-stars or better. On average, there are roughly 32 five-star recruits and somewhere between 300 to 400 four-stars among the thousands of high school prospects per cycle. In the recent five-year draft window, 65% of the first-round picks (104 of 160) and 52% of the players taken in the first three rounds (267 of 514) were blue-chip recruits coming out of high school.” During that five-year window, Texas has produced the most draft picks (157) while Georgia has produced the most first-rounders (20). Broken down by time spent in college, 469 picks spent five years in college, 430 spent four and 249 spent three. Meanwhile, nearly 84% of the NFL Draft picks over the last five years played their last college game for a Power 4 school, including Notre Dame. By school, Georgia has the most overall picks over the five-year window (55) while Alabama has the most first-round selections (16). More. (link)
