Michigan State officially introduced J Batt as its next AD, and Batt covered a wide range of topics with media members, including the importance of learning MSU’s story and its importance in the NIL era: “It's incredibly important. My first job will be to listen and learn. I'll spend a lot of time asking questions and listening and learning. At the end of the day, college athletics is worth it, right? The endeavor that we have and that we take on is an opportunity, and so, it's changing at a rapid and dynamic pace. But that change provides opportunity, and it provides some things that are the same, and those things are worth it.” Batt also talked about NIL in broad terms: “We're going to be extremely successful and competitive in that space. We're going to be intentional about providing all of our coaches the resources to be successful at a championship level. I'll tell you, I believe as we head into the revenue-share of the post-House settlement, what that requires will change, and how we approach that space will change. But I can tell you we'll have a great plan. We'll be united in that plan. We'll be aligned in that plan from President Guskiewicz to our coaches, and to our board as we head into that era.” More. CollegeAD breaks down the financials of what Michigan State will pay to sign new AD J Batt: “While we've seen various buyout figures all over the internet, we were able to take a look at Batt's most recent contract at Georgia Tech - an extension that was effective as of December 2024. The deal paid Batt a base salary of $979K starting January 1, 2025, with his salary scheduled to increase by $100K annually. Over the course of the five-year term, Batt was set to earn a total of $5,895,000 in base pay. According to his contract: If he terminates this contract…he shall pay as liquidated damages to the Association, or cause liquidated damages to be paid to the Association, 30% of all remaining unpaid Base Salary and Supplemental Compensation amounts which would have been paid through December 31, 2029.” CollegeAD notes that “Batt was earning $271K annually in supplemental pay. Putting pen to paper, when you combine base pay and supplemental pay over the entire term, Batt would have earned $7.25M. Broken down monthly, Batt's pay would average out to $120,833. Now, having worked five months, Batt would have had $6,645,883.33 in remaining compensation had he remained at Georgia Tech. Taking 30% from that, Batt's buyout totals roughly $1,993,750, all due to Georgia Tech within 60 days. The Spartans also owed former AD Alan Haller a $1.237M buyout, per the terms of his contract.” (link)

Arkansas State officially introduced its new AD in Chris Pezman, who talked about the importance of ensuring the Red Wolves were prepared for the changes in college sports: “The challenge that we have right now with the employment status of athletes and the inability to have collective bargaining, those are things that have to get solved, because those are some of the things that I think are holding up some of the supplement issues, particularly around roster sizes. We just have to be very open-minded to embrace the change and accept it and figure out ways to be nimble enough to navigate it.” Pezman also emphasized the importance of the fan experience: “I can’t control what happens on the field. We’re going to have wins and losses, but we can control the experience the customer has, and the guest has, when they show up. If we can create value for them to show up and support us, that’s what our goal is.” To get started, Pezman said he’ll be “acclimating myself with the coaches, understanding what their needs are, wants are, then start prioritizing that. I want to get integrated with the staff so that they are able to effectively work and move forward and are not waiting on decisions from me to come down the pipe.” (link)

Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill joins the Big Mountain podcast and says: “We believe we’re doing college athletics the right way at our level. It's still about graduation, it’s still about the student-athlete experience. We’re going to play high-quality Division I college athletics at the highest level, and we’re going to try to win national titles, but it’s still finding that balance between ‘what are we trying to accomplish here?’ – and it's not about “how much can we pay a player?’ So that's the great thing about our level. I feel like we do it the right way and that's how we talk about that experience being elevated – it’s that balance between high-level athletics and academics that prepare you for success after you graduate.” Wistrcill also talks about the future of the Big Sky’s membership and notes that “we know who we are. People aren’t really trying to be something they’re never going to be. … I think that my job as commissioner is to make sure all our member institutions have their eyes wide open to any membership decision they might make. And I have a unique background because I worked at two Power 4 schools, I was a G5 AD for 6 years, now I'm an FCS commissioner. So I can share with them, ‘Here’s the good and the bad about trying to compete at the G5 level.’ And there's some great things about it, but there’s also some real challenges from a funding level [and] trying to make that work.” Full podcast. Hero Sports’ Sam Herder weighs in on Utah Valley’s move to the Big West: “While not directly football-related, the ripple effects here could lead to FCS realignment. With Utah Valley leaving the WAC in 2026, the conference will be down 5 members: Utah Tech, Southern Utah, Tarleton State, Abilene Christian, and UT Arlington. The first 4 sponsor football and play in the UAC, a football-only league partnering with the ASUN (Austin Peay, Central Arkansas, EKU, North Alabama, West Georgia). Can the WAC rebuild once again? Or is Utah Valley the first domino and others will also look to find a new home? The Big Sky doesn't sound interested in expansion. The Summit League/MVFC partnership could help in targeting new members, either the remaining Utah schools or Texas schools in the WAC. Tarleton and Abilene Christian, two 2024 FCS playoff teams, in the MVFC, anyone? Will the ASUN and WAC partnership hold strong, or will there be attempted poaching? We'll see, but Utah Valley was a domino waiting to fall for other movement to take place.” (link)

Ohio State Football HC Ryan Day believes the Big Ten deserves four College Football Playoff AQs, telling ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg: "We're in the Big Ten, and we have 18 teams and some of the best programs in the country. I feel like we deserve at least four automatic qualifiers." Day points out how the most recent Big Ten expansion added the top teams from the original Pac-12, including the only two – Oregon and Washington – that made the four-team CFP and played for national titles. "You would have had at least a team or two [in the CFP] from out there. So it only makes sense when you have 18 teams, especially the quality of teams that you would have [in] that many teams representing the Big Ten." Day adds: "If you don't have those automatic qualifiers, you're less likely to play a game like we're playing this year against Texas, because it just won't make sense. If we do, then you're more likely to do that, because we play nine conference games in the Big Ten. The SEC doesn't. So it's not equal." Day also sounds off on the shrinking of rosters from 120 to 105 despite an increasing number of games (OSU played 16 last season). "I'm concerned about 16 or 17 games with a 105-man roster. With 120, it's about maxed-out. You have to stay healthy, and all it takes are a couple injuries during that long of a run. But in the NFL, you can hire somebody off of waivers. In college football, you can't. I'm concerned about the length of the season with 105." (link)

Louisiana Tech unveils a renewed vision that emphasizes people, purpose, and progress to help chart the course for LA Tech Athletics. The vision is supported by five core “CHAMP Values” that will guide the department’s daily actions and long-term goals. They are: “Connection – Building trust and relationships; Charge – Impact and attack the moment; Character – Consistency of positive habits; Community – Past, present & future, together; and Competition – Be your best, expect our best.” Bulldogs AD Ryan Ivey: "Our vision is about more than athletics—it's about the people who make it all possible. By aligning our actions with purpose, we're creating a pathway that uplifts individuals and strengthens the impact of the Louisiana Tech brand from student-athletes to community partnerships, and broader strategic branding efforts. … This launch also marks the beginning of a continuous journey. We will implement regular opportunities for teams and departments to evaluate their alignment with CHAMP behaviors, reflect on performance, and revise standards as needed. This ongoing process of assessment, reflection, and accountability ensures that the vision stays active and responsive to the evolving needs of the department in a very transient and turbulent time in college athletics." The Middle Tennessee State Board of Trustees Finance and Personnel Committee voted May 20 to propose a $97.50 increase in mandatory student fees for the upcoming academic year, $64 of which would be allocated to MTSU athletics. The Student Government Association pushed back on the increase, writing: “We note that a large portion of this mandatory fee increase can be attributed to Athletics. This is a special concern to our students for at least two reasons. … It has been a longstanding practice at MTSU that departments proposing an increase to a mandatory student fee first bring the proposal to the SGA executive board.” Blue Raiders AD Chris Massaro said he regretted not taking it to the students before making the proposition, but did so because he was unaware of how much money athletics needed when SGA questioned different colleges. “At the time, I didn’t know what to ask for. I knew we would need some help with all the balls we had up in the air.” Massaro also noted the public comment period is still open until June 10. (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker tells the Boston Globe’s Michael Silverman that the House (settlement) “as envisioned does a few things that I think are pretty important. The first thing it does is it moves the center of NIL gravity away from third parties, who, for the most part, are not well known and not really accountable to anybody, they don’t have to register or report to anyone, and it creates a center of gravity that’s really around the school, and having the schools be the prime relationship around NIL, the athletic development piece, and the personal development piece all where it belongs.” Baker in a wide-ranging Q&A also explains what the NCAA is seeking from Congress: “One is to give us some kind of state preemption, because we have so many state laws now that are basically designed to create competitive advantages for the schools in their states. It’s not just an issue around a level playing field in NCAA conferences. There are maybe 40 states with different rules about all kinds of things. Money made from NIL isn’t taxable in some states, or you don’t have to comply with conference or NCAA rules. There’s some states where it’s more like an order that you not comply with conference or NCAA rules. I mean, it’s wild.” In regards to fighting efforts from student-athletes seeking additional years of eligibility, Baker notes: “In sort of an odd way, this has helped us with our conversation with people in Congress because we’ve had a number of folks we’ve talked to who have said, ‘That eligibility thing, I can see why you’re concerned about that one and why you might need some help from us to be able to set a standard around eligibility.’ … You start to chip away a lot of the rules and standards we have around academics, which I think makes everybody very nervous, for all kinds of pretty good reasons. So, it’s one where a lot of people in Washington, both members of Congress and their staffs, have said, ‘Yeah, OK, I understand why that’s a problem and why you would be here to talk to us about that.’” Full interview. Now that U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken has granted an extension of the House settlement deadline to June 27, CBS’ Shehan Jeyarajah, Brandon Marcello and Richard Johnson note that a lot of administrators remain in limbo. For instance, Texas A&M AD Trev Alberts says: "There's a lot of angst, man, and you guys can probably feel it. It's at the commissioner level, the president's level, the coaches' level." One source joked that if Wilken really wanted to mess with athletic administrators, she would “render her final decision during next week's NACDA conference, while many athletic department heads are in attendance in Orlando rather than working on their respective campuses. During a time that should be a relative respite for athletic administrators, the impending settlement has them stuck in purgatory.” As far as Wilken’s thought process, Jeyarajah, et al. cite a 2014 New York Times article in which former clerk Helen Moore says: "She's an intellectual. A lot of cases present interesting intellectual issues, and that really piques her interest. She wants to hear both sides, and she really thinks deeply about both sides. The attorneys on both sides will cite case law to support their arguments, and she gets her clerks hopping, researching all the case law being cited." Meanwhile, lawyers speculate that the extension is a positive sign, with the CBS crew noting: “If she approves the settlement, it won't be long until there are appeals. Writing airtight legal language is critical. If she were to deny the settlement, it's not appealable. There's less urgency to write a detailed decision.” However, in the event the settlement is rejected, one NIL agent says: “I'll be hitting every college up on August 1 demanding new contracts.” (link)

Utah Valley will move from the WAC to the Big West starting in 2026-27. Commissioner Dan Butterly: “UVU brings a tradition of competitive excellence and a rapidly growing athletic program that aligns perfectly with our membership and vision for the future. Their addition expands our geographic footprint into a vibrant and strategically significant region, while elevating the level of competition across the board. We look forward to the energy and excitement the Wolverines will bring to The Big West.” Of note: “Though the potential for adding a 12th conference member remains, the addition of Utah Valley and the previous addition of California Baptist University returns The Big West to an 11-team conference in the 2026-27 season.” (link)

As the Women’s College World Series title series starts later today, Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt tells Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich that the formula for building this year’s softball team includes generous NIL support as well as the selection of Gerry Glasco as its new HC. Christovich: “Glasco commanded respect across the industry during his tenure building the Louisiana Rajun Cajuns into a top-25 program. That translated immediately, Hocutt says: He proceeded to assemble the top transfer class according to Softball America. Glasco’s plan for success, Hocutt says, inspired donors to up their contributions to the program.” Hocutt adds that “it’s been no secret that John and Tracy Sellers have stepped forward in a transformational way for Texas Tech softball through the Matador Club. Their engagement there has given us, as an athletics department, the opportunity to believe in coach Glasco’s vision – and allow him to execute.” With the House settlement pending, Hocutt says the Red Raiders are approaching revenue-sharing distribution based on what percentage of overall revenue a program contributes to the athletic department budget. In softball, that would mean the team would have $200K in the war chest; however, Hocutt says the department will engage in an annual review to readjust the percentages. “The Texas Tech softball program is in a much different place than it was two years ago. … So I would anticipate to see that escalate to some degree.” (link)

The Southern Conference has developed a second assessment of the NCAA's proposed DI governance restructuring and submitted it to the NCAA working group following their request for feedback. Commissioner Michael Cross is sharing the document publicly to foster dialogue among conference leaders, athletic directors, and university presidents as the reform process moves forward. From the conference: “The SoCon's assessment highlights several positive elements in the proposal, including sport-specific oversight committees as favorable progress towards true decentralization. The assessment identifies critical concerns regarding assignment of committee seats based on success metrics and proposes abandoning committees voting to decide who receives a bid to the NCAA championships and instead adopting a selection process using solely results-based data as occurs in Division I hockey. Additional recommendations include the need for business expertise on sport committees and restoring single sport Division I eligibility.” Cross: “Governance reform requires the willingness to decentralize and narrow national authority to truly essential functions, while empowering conferences and institutions to govern themselves within their own philosophies and resources. … These recommendations suggest a path forward that builds upon the good work of the working group. By incorporating these recommendations, the working group can develop a governance model that is flexible, adaptable, defensible, accessible, and straightforward and can adapt to a complex legal and competitive landscape." LSU AD Scott Woodward remarks on the Navigating Sports Business podcast that athletic departments creating commercial arms such as Clemson Ventures and Kentucky’s Champions Blue LLC “ is nothing new. Florida has been operating this way for decades as a standalone 501(c)(3). We’ve been doing it in a halfway manner here. Tiger Athletic Foundation does all of our fundraising and most of our capital projects. So, there’s hybrids, there’s ways to do it, but, yeah, we’re going to be creative and be more nimble on what and how we can maximize and how we can leverage what we do at athletics instead of just doing it traditionally the way we’ve done it – leveraging it, working joint opportunities with public-private partnerships. There’s all kinds of ways to be creative to do it but knowing that you don’t have to give everything away. I would just caution anyone in the business: be careful to make sure that what you're getting is worth it and that you have a lot of eyeballs looking at it when you do joint ventures or you do things that are outside of the traditional methods.” Woodward also reiterates that he’s not going to “piss and moan” about the state of the industry but does acknowledge it can be frustrating. “The most exhausting thing is fighting your own team, whether it’s the NCAA or the SEC or people inside your university. You always have to have the same vision, and that’s why I have such a great relationship with Greg Sankey and my president and our board. It’s because we have to pull this train in the right direction because it’s hard enough beating Georgia, ‘Bama, Texas A&M. That's where my focus needs to be, not on worrying about stuff that really doesn’t matter when it comes to competing and giving our student-athletes a great experience. That’s where I try to keep the focus, but hell yeah I get frustrated. Hell yeah, I get mad. But so does everyone else. You have a job. Mine’s no different than anyone else’s.” Full podcast. (link)

Speculation is growing that consensus 2026 NHL Draft No. 1 pick Gavin McKenna will choose to play college hockey now that the NCAA has lifted its ban on CHL players, and Front Office Sports’ Meredith Turits is told by College Hockey Insider publisher Mike McMahon: “It’s an affirmation of the college development model. That’s what everybody involved in the NCAA has always believed was the benefit to college hockey. Those coaches would say, ‘Yes, this is, this is exactly what we’ve been talking about.’” Turits notes that “if McKenna starts the dominoes falling, it would also potentially weaken the CHL’s three leagues as NCAA programs siphon off skaters with the highest professional potential, especially at the U20 level.” To that point, McMahon says about 90% of American prospects opt for college, where it’s been a battle to sell the NCAA over the CHL to Canada’s top skaters; however, Canadian players are now open to earning more in college through NIL and/or rev-share. “It’s a big reason why CHL players are interested, too—they’re going to have the opportunity to come down and get paid.” McMahon says he’s heard some Big Ten schools have budgets of about $700K for revenue-sharing and NIL for their hockey players. “That’s obviously far less than what those schools are spending on football and basketball, but it’s also far more than what most of the other schools in college hockey are spending.” (link)

Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale comments on the possibility of the House settlement precluding student-athletes from signing true NIL deals because revenue-sharing is positioned as NIL rather than pay-for play. He tells NIL Daily’s Maddy Hudak: “Leave real NIL endorsement opportunities open to those athletes, should they have the value, to go command those deals. Instead of trying to disguise these deals in a way where you now own their rights to do endorsements or can block them from doing certain endorsements because those brands might conflict with the brand sponsors of your school. That's going to be a mess. There’s a real crux with how these contracts are being structured that will create a flurry of lawsuits.” (link)

The Oregon Senate has approved House Bill 3694, which would provide a legal foundation for college athletic departments to begin paying student-athletes directly. The bill as written has the backing of Oregon’s athletic department, with Deputy AD/COO Lisa Peterson testifying in support on April 30: “States around the country have amended or are in the process of amending their NIL laws to allow colleges and universities to pay student-athletes directly. Oregon must follow to remain competitive. ... Without similar action, Oregon will fall behind in the national recruiting landscape and lose players to other colleges and universities in other states that allow such payments.” The amended bill will now go back to the House. A bill has been introduced in the New Jersey Senate that would exempt up to $100K of annual income earned by college athletes from the state's gross income tax, specifically for compensation related to their NIL while attending a four-year school within the state, according to NIL attorney Daniel Greene.
